4 out of 5 stars (3.5 Stars) This Dynamic Duo Still Manages To Deliver!.......2007-06-26

With over 13 years of being in the rap game, 8Ball and MJG have seen the ups and downs of the industry through first-hand experience. They also know that the landscape of Hip-Hop has changed about a dozen times since their 1993 debut album Comin' Out Hard. With modest success from being on various independent labels (most notable being Suave House), the crew was signed to Bad Boy by Diddy and released their major label debut Living Legends in 2004. Still getting much of the same buzz as they did when they were on top of the underground scene, they did sell in excess of 750,000 copies (more than Diddy was able to do with Press Play in 2006). So with the release of Ridin High, the duo are hoping to at least match that success, but actually take a step backwards in the end. The album starts off pretty good with songs like the radio-friendly "Cruzin" featuring Project Pat and Slim of 112, the grimy anthem "Relax And Take Notes" featuring Notorious B.I.G. (per Diddy's request I'm sure), and the energetic, bass-heavy "Turn Up The Bump." Pimp C rolls through to rep for Houston on "Watchu Gonna Do," Killer Mike resurfaces for the entertaining track "Running Out Of Bud," Yung Joc makes a so-so appearance for the thumping "Clap On," and Jazza Pha and Juvenile bring all of their talents on board for "Pimpin Don't Fail Me Now" (a play on the chorus to Missy Elliott's "Pussycat"). Unfortunately there are huge missteps with a couple of tracks on this album. Diddy obnoxious presence in the background of the over-produced title track and his vocals on "30 Rocks" bring down the album tremendously. "Hickory Dickory Dock" (yes, you read that right) is just bad all around, and "Alcohol, Pu$$y, and Weed" is another bad attempt at making a Pop-sounding Dirty South track. "Get Low" is poorly produced and lyrically dormant, while "Take It Off" featuring Poo Bear is a futile attempt at recreating the feel of their former hit "Space Age Pimpin." This will probably spell the end of their mainstream run, but 8Ball & MJG obviously have the potential to be chart-topping superstars. But when you have a label that doesn't have much experience with producing and promoting albums from the Dirty South, it usually spells disaster for all.

3 out of 5 stars Blame it on Puffy and Bad Boy South.......2007-06-02

I agree with the reviewer who wrote that Puffy and Bad Boy are to blame for this album. Man, long gone are the days when Eightball and MJG had their own style, both lyrically and musically. Ever since they signed with Bad Boy all that changed. Diddy pushed them into a much more comercial direction, so that the album sound pretty much like most other albums coming out of the Dirty South. And it wasn't like that back then! Listen to their first 5 albums, and you could see that Ball and G were doing their own thing! And they even sold much more back then (let's face it, Diddy does nothing to promote this album, and that's why it hasn't sold well). They weren't able to do that on this album (at least on most songs). It's like they took a few steps BACK. "Livin' Legends" was much better. For example, the first single "Relax and take notes" is a deccent track, and that's it - how it was chosen to be a single is beyond my understanding.
Anyway, the album itself is nice, but overall most of it doesn't stand up. There are about 5 great songs, and the rest range between avarege and weak (Especially that "Hickery Dickery Dock". What the hell was the label thinking?? You KNOW that Ball and G would've never make a song like that!). The whole album sound too much like a Lil' Jon/TI/Young Jeezy album. Too much sreaming, too much of that crunk sound, too much screaming by MJG (remember how smooth he used to be? Not those game are gone_... The good songs are those who sound different. But the album overall isn't as melodic and soulful like their previous albums. Lyrically the album is also the weakest they've ever done. It's not as personal and deep like their previous albums, and it's obvious it's all Bad Boy's directions... Anyway, the bottom line is that it's an OK album, nothing special, but Ball and G are still living legends, and with their talent they are able to save the album and make it an enjoyable listen.

4 out of 5 stars I ALSO BLAME PUFFY.......2007-05-01

I ALSO BLAME PUFFY. HE TALKING AON ALL TRACKS. BUT BESIDES HIM, THE ALBUM IS PRETTY SOLID. I SAY HE COULDNT HAD MORE PRODUCERS LIKE JAZZY PHA, PHARELL, OR SOME EVEN FROM THE SOUTH, BUT YOU KNOW PUFFY WANTS IT ALL INHOUSE. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, I LIKE RELAX & TAKE NOTES, MEPHIS, RUN TO THE CORNER STORE, 30 ROCKS IS MY JAM MINUS PUFFY'S CORNY AZZ

1 out of 5 stars BAD not in a good way!.......2007-04-10

3 out of 5 stars It's not "Living Legends", but "Ridin' High" is still worth checking out.......2007-04-03

I have no problem admitting that I was a late bloomer to 8Ball & MJG. I knew about their earlier CDs like "On The Outside Looking In", "Comin' Out Hard", and "On Top Of The World", but I never decided to purchase any of them. What finally made me come around was a cut that 8Ball had on his solo CD "Lost" with Master P, Silkk The Shocker, Mystikal, and Psycho Drama entitled "Pure Uncut". I purchased "Lost" and I enjoyed cuts such as "Coffee Shoppe" w/Redman, "Backyard Mississippi" w/Goodie Mob, "Put Tha House On It" and "Ball & Bun" w/ Bun B of UGK. A year later, 8Ball & MJG dropped "In Our Lifetime" and that ended up being the 1st CD that I purchased from them. My favorite tracks ended up being "We Started This", "Paid Dues" w/Cee-Lo, "Throw Your Hands Up" w/Outkast and "Don't Flex". In the year 2000, 8Ball & MJG came back with "Space Age 4 Eva" which featured the infamous "Pimp Hard" and "Buck Bounce" which featured DJ Quik. Once this CD was released and ran its course I didn't hear too much from them as a group but they were always known to get down on a collaboration. Later I heard that they had signed with Bad Boy, of all places and that they would be releasing a CD soon. The CD got pushed back numerous times but finally in May of 2004, "Living Legends" was released. Since I wasn't familiar with their first 3 CDs, "Living Legends" instantly became my favorite CD from them with tracks like "You Don't Want Drama", "Don't Make", "Forever" w/Lloyd, "Look At The Grillz" w/TI & Twista, "Straight Cadillac Pimpin'" and "Memphis City Blues". "Living Legends" remained in the CD player for a long time.

Now at the top of 2007, 8Ball & MJG are back with their 2nd release on Bad Boy entitled "Ridin' High". Things get off to an excellent start with their 1st single "Relax & Take Notes" which features the late, great Notorious BIG, with a sample from "Dead Wrong" and Project Pat, who dropped his "Crook By Da Book: The Fed Story" in the last quarter of 2006. This is clearly the best track on "Ridin' High" in my opinion. The title track caught me by surprise and the song actually took awhile to grow on me. The reason why I like the track is because it doesn't sound like something that 8Ball & MJG would normally do and sometimes you have to dare to be different. Now it may have been an idea from Puffy to get them some commercial exposure but the track is still a good song in my opinion and definitely a track for the clubs. Another one of my favorite tracks is produced by Timbaland's right hand man, Danja, in "Turn Up The Bump". Their is nothing complex about the track it's just classic Ball & G with MJG proclaiming that he is a pimp for life and that he doesn't have any love for certain types of the opposite sex. I was a little skeptical about "Cruzin'" at first too. You figure if you have 8Ball & MJG and Three 6 Mafia on the same track that you're going to get the same magic that was created on "Stay Fly" which also featured Young Buck. However, Slim from 112 joins the track and it ends up being a track for the ladies. After a couple of listens the track should grow on you. However, I can think of the Mobb Deep and 112 track "Anything" that I never ended up liking at all...lol Pimp C joins 8Ball & MJG on "Whatchu Gonna Do". 8Ball & MJG were featured on Pimp C's "Bobby & Whitney" from his "Pimpalation" CD so I was sure that Pimp C would show up somewhere on "Ridin' High". The track is one of the better songs on "Ridin' High" with Pimp C doing the hook and the last verse of the track. "30 Rocks" would actually be a decent track if they would have left Puffy off of it especially with the tight track and the Ball & G lyrics on it. However, this isn't the first or last song that Puffy has been on that will be messed up by him. Even Young Joc gives a decent performance on "Clap On". I have nothing to compare the track to since I wasn't ever going to listen to Young Joc's CD, but "Clap On" ends up being a decent combination between the artists. "Pimpin' Don't Fail Me Now" is a laid, back smooth track that most people will have mixed feelings on. Jazze Pha produces the track and does the hook and Juvenile shows up to do a guest verse as well. DJ Toomp provides some energy with the track "Worldwide" and Bangladesh, who produced alot more songs on "Living Legends" shows up to produce "Get Low". The track would be better if it didn't sound like "Don't Make" Part 2, but you will still like the track, in my opinion. Al Capone shows up to pay tribute to "Memphis" once again and Killer Mike shows up on the obvious track about their favorite drug of choice on "Runnin' Out Of Bud".

The problems with "Ridin' High" are easy to notice. It seems that on some tracks that 8Ball & MJG take the easy way out and they make tracks that add no value to the CD whatsoever. "Hickory Dickory Dock" is just awful. They should have just stuck with the track "Outfit" that Lil Jon produced that was supposed to come after the Interlude on Track 8. The same can be said for "Alcohol P**** and W***". Anytime I see Mario Winans name on a rap track, I should already have known how that would sound. Mario, please stick to r&b and making another CD. I don't need to see your name on production credits for a Ball & G CD. "Take It Off" doesn't make U want to listen to it more than twice either.

Overall, I am still an 8Ball & MJG fan. I just feel personally that if they leave their career in the hands of Puff Daddy, they won't be able to carry the powerful 8Ball & MJG name the way that it should be carried. After "Living Legends" I atleast expected their next CD to be just as good or even better, but with "Ridin' High" those expectations aren't reached. If you are an 8Ball & MJG fan you'll still find some songs that are worth listening to, you may just not be satisfied with the overall product. I still rate this CD between 3 and 3 and a half stars.

WHAT MORE CAN I SAY. THIS IS A CLASSIC ALBUM. THE UNDERGROUND KINGZ ARE REALLY KINGZ OF THA UNDERGROUND

4 out of 5 stars Heavy grooves and gangsta drawls...pure Texas funk.......2007-05-23

U.G.K.'s 1996 album "Ridin' Dirty" is a great showcase of Texas hip hop that would prove very influential. Rappers Pimp C and Bun B were already two albums deep when they dropped this one, and in my opinion it's the best album they've ever released. "Ridin' Dirty" is an album that's centered around simple yet very appealing production. The laidback grooves are bass-heavy and funky, but without the synths, horns, and extra instrumentation you might see on a g-funk album of this era. They're rolling beats meant for top-down cruising and chilling, and nine of the album's thirteen tracks are five minutes or longer. Most songs are pretty hooky, and the choruses are either rapped or delivered by a female singer, this can add or take away from the given song on "Ridin' Dirty." Former Rap-A-Lot in-house producer N.O. Joe is very involved here, and he's one of the South's finest producers ever. I don't think anyone would ever call Pimp C and Bun B lyrical geniuses, but for the most part what they lack in pure lyricism they make up for in style and character. Their tales of crime, violence, and women or their talk of cars and materialism are not out of the ordinary for a gangsta rap record at all. However, they both have very distinctive deliveries and unique drawls and accents that could not be mistaken for anyone but Texas natives. They have good flows and chemistry, working very well together. "Ridin' Dirty" has a few truly classic cuts, and the rest of the songs are pretty good, there's only a very few that I don't really like, so it's actually a pretty consistent work. I don't believe it's a classic on the level of some of Scarface or Geto Boys' work, but it's one of the finest albums to come from the hot Houston scene of the mid-90s. I highly recommend "Ridin' Dirty" to fans of southern or even west coast rap, it's a great album for the car and the summertime and it's very entertaining.

After the intro comes one of my two favorite songs on the album, "One Day." Using a classic Isley Brothers sample and the album's greatest rolling, bass-heavy beat, Pimp C and Bun B deliver some of their best rhymes in a laidback manner. The depressing subject matter and perfect production make this song a true southern classic. "Murder" is tough and upbeat but still has the heavy riding quality of the slower songs on this album. "Pinky Ring" is fast and funky, it's not my favorite because the flossy lyrics don't really go anywhere and I don't like the hook. "Diamonds and Wood" is a showcase of the excellent slow and funky production at its best, it's great to just let it roll for over five minutes. "3 in the Mornin'" comes next, a solid track but not one of the best, the production is simple and the hook isn't great. The 3-2 collaboration "Touched" is very good, it's got some mid-tempo, catchy funk to make your head nod, and this is the song with the infamous "Now once upon a time not too long ago, a n...a like myself had to strong-arm a h.." verse. "F... My Car" is about deceptive women, some basic gangsta rap. The N.O. Joe aided "That's Why I Carry" is nice, and I also like "Hi-Life," a profile of the crime-ridden life of a successful hustler. The nice but not too memorable "Good Stuff" comes before the absolutely classic title track. I totally love this song, it's one of the most laidback, chilled-out rap songs ever. The production is just awesome, and the lyrics and hook do it perfect justice. The outro is almost ten minutes long and not worth listening to more than once even though it has a nice beat, because it's just spoken shout-outs.

In my opinion, "Ridin' Dirty" is the best album U.G.K. ever put together, and it's a really fun listen. It's not perfect by any means, but it's certainly worth owning for any hip hop fan. The deep grooves, rough styles, and southern drawls will have most listeners coming back for more I'm sure. If you like this album, I might also recommend U.G.K.'s first two albums Too Hard to Swallow and Super Tight..., as well as Scarface's The Diary and E.S.G.'s Sailin' da South.

5 out of 5 stars UGK.......2007-03-21

One of, if not, the greatest albums put out by Bun B and Pimp C, better known by their collective name UnderGround Kings (UGK). Not to take away from Too Hard To Swallow or Supertight. Every track comes with hard tracks backed with southern hip-hop beats. Probably the album that really put them on the map far as larger fan bases that PA and Houston area. Track 5 Diamonds and Woods became an instant classis and still goes hard today.

5 out of 5 stars STILL CLASSIC.......2007-01-19

ONE DAY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVORITE OF MINE FROM UGK. I HAD TO REPLACE THIS CD IN MY COLLECTION.

5 out of 5 stars Southern classic........2006-10-25

Long before Chamillionaire was "Ridin' Dirty"(which was questionably changed to simply "Ridin'" when it made radio waves) on the charts, the Underground Kingz were ridin' dirtier than anyone else in the game; and to this day, this is still one of the grimiest records to come from the Dirty South. This is arguably UGK's greatest album(although Dirty Money is also a classic album), and was quite a few years before UGK were first exposed to the mainstream with Hova's "Big Pimpin'."

Some people new to the game probably think that Bun B, who makes a guest appearance on seemingly every Southern rapper's album, is some new cat who's trying to make waves in the underground. While I can see why they'd think this(Bun B is always hungry when he raps, leading one to believe he's trying to make an impact on the industry - despite the fact he already has made a significant one), Bun B has been in the biz for well over a decade, alongside his partner in rhyme(although, 'in crime' maybe more appropriate for Pimp C than it is for most), Pimp C. Together, they're the Underground Kingz, who identify themselves by the acronym of UGK. When they first came into the game, the South was obscure; now that it's blown up(especially their native land of Texas), one would think that UGK would get better publicity. Unfortunately the Kingz' publicity still doesn't compare to their skills, and only true heads have been able to check out their undeniably dope music.

Hailing from Port Author, they may not be Houstonians, but they still possess the love of flossin', and grindin', as well as slow hypnotic beats, and equally entrancing flows. On Ridin' Dirty, UGK provide one of the most revered music to ever come from the South; and for good reason. While one may criticise them for their admittedly limited subject matter(whips, drips, chips, tips, and tricks), they deliver their raps with so much finesse, and style that you can't help but overlook these issues. No matter how much these things are rapped about, UGK always provide an interesting take on them, complete with captivating rhymes, and superb flows. Their production? Just as somber, yet hypnotic as their flows.

Highlights? I'd say this album has gems, but in all honesty, it's a complete gold mine. Every single track on this album is a five-star cut, and even the outro has a dope enough beat to warrant it that label, despite the fact it's all shout-outs. Whether it's the smoothed out, Isley-sampled "One Day," the gritty "Murder," the Southern anthem "Diamonds & Wood," or the impressive showing of wordplay on "Touched"(which Jay-Z lifted a verse from on "99 Problems"), this album has something for every hip-hop head. If you're a fan of Southern rap, then you need this album; if you're a detractor of Southern rap, you also need to this album to show you just how great it is. If you're a head who isn't prejudices to coasts or regions, this album will have constant rotation, and you too will be able to appreciate the dopeness that is UGK.

ROIR is proud to release Martin Rev's self-titled solo debut album, originally released in 1979 on Charles Ball's Lust/Unlust label, now with 5 bonus tracks (3 unreleased & exclusive). Rev is best known for his confrontational work with Alan Vega as Suicide; considered one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years. This record, somewhere between the harsh sound of Rev's early work with Suicide and his more melodic, solo material ("See Me Ridin'"), is concrete evidence of how influential Rev's dirty American-motorik music really was.
All songs written & performed by Martin Rev. All compositions produced by Charles Ball & Martin Rev. Tracks 1-6 originally appeared on vinyl (Lust/Unlust Records 1980). Liner Notes by Steve Barker (The Wire UK).

    Album Description

    5 out of 5 stars Lust Unlust.......2005-05-03

Half of this release consists of extra tracks; tracks one through six comprise Rev's solo debut on Charles Ball's Lust/Unlust label. The rest were recorded quite some time afterward - - after his second solo release, CLOUDS OF GLORY, in fact. Guess you could say this is really Rev's first and third album. As these extra tracks were recorded with Ball, this is really a compilation of Rev's work with him. Not surprisingly, much of it sounds a lot like Suicide; the one vocal track reveals Rev to be a huskier version of his partner Alan Vega. But there's a lot of variety here - - from the melodic toybox of the opener, 'Mari', to the clanking soundscape of 'Nineteen 86' and pretty much everything between. 'Coal Train' matches 'Mari' in its subversive, dark catchiness while the doowop-tinged 'Daydreams' (think particularly The Clovers, 'Devil Or Angel') echoes some of Rev's Suicide work. And the lenghty 'Marvel' is waves on waves of synthetic melody washes that would not be out of place on a Krautrock sampler. Great, startling stuff.

1 out of 5 stars The Thieving "Artiste".......2003-02-23

I produced this album; all the selections from 1979 and 1991.
I am proud of my substantial contributions, but must insist you pass this edition by -- it is truly an inferior creation relying on unfinished cassette work tapes (not even early mixes, nor virtually finished takes of which there are many!)
I have not been paid for these (inferior) sessions and will probably never be. Rev has had ample opportunity to be honorable and has shown he is not. Forget this release and go buy yourself some Kraftwerk or such. Believe me, Martin Rev is such an egomaniac he has no compunctions ripping you, the customer, off. Truly a disgraceful performance and product!

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Cuts.......2003-01-13

Martin Rev(Suicide) is one of America's original electronic producers. This album is a re-issue of his debut solo album from 1980....if you can beleive that. This guy has influenced a wide range of artists like Cabaret Voltaire, the Orb, Depeche Mode, New Order, Colorform, etc. The difference between this album and other early electronic releases is that this album holds up to todays standards....in fact better than most new albums. The bonus cuts are excellent...especially Coal Train.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Ridin On E (2 and 1/2 stars).......2007-06-07

What happens when you let the queen of pop(Puffy)gain full control of your album? You get a commercialized monstrosity called Ridin High. As long as I have been listening to 8-Ball & MJG I've never known them to make a bad album. Until now! The Good: Relax And Take Notes and Turn Up The Bump reminds us of the old school Ball & G that everybody is fond of. Cruisin (featuring Slim of 112 and Three 6 Mafia)grew on me and so did Pimpin Dont Fail Me Now(featuring Juvenile). Get Low and Stand Up are also slammin highlights. One last note: MJG floored 8-Ball on Turn Up The Bump and Get Low(not that 8-Ball's rhymes were bad its just that MJG's caught your attention). The Bad: Take It Off sounds like a forced song for the ladies, Killer Mike had the only notable verse in Runnin Out Of Bud, Pimp C had the only verse worth talking about on Whatchu Gonna Do(another song with a dumb hook) and Worldwide is the most obvious rush job track on the album. The Ugly: Ridin High is one the worst songs on here and to put southern giants like Ball & G over a clubby beat that would suit Ciara just fine is insulting to a fault. 30 Rocks is the worst song on here period! The sissy beat, the bland rhymes from Ball & G, the nonsensical hook and is Diddy that delusional that he doesnt realize how much he sucks as a rapper? Hickory Dickory Dock and Alcohol, P**** And Weed(Wow! What a title) are two wack tracks with dumb hooks and Clap On(featuring Yung Joc) should have been disposed of quickly. Memphis is halfhearted tribute to their hometown over a campy beat. Bottom Line: Ridin High is 8-Ball and MJG's worst album. They sound like they rushed a lot of the songs, the production was weak and 8-Ball and MJG sound like they're bored on most of the tracks. To 8-Ball & MJG: We forgive you for Ridin High. Just break camp from Bad Boy Records and that acne-faced freak of nature and we will pretend like this album never happened. PEACE!
