4 out of 5 stars VERY N!CE.......2006-08-26

First off, production wise the album is on point. Most songs have ill beats by shuko or other underground producers but then there are a couple tracks with horrible production. Lyricwise every song is amazing. If this album was more like torture papers or like visions of gandhi it would be an instant success. So, i'm looking forward to their third album.
Best songs are:

Fire and Ice

Top Shelf

Chapter of Thunder

4 out of 5 stars Excellent first release.......2006-04-30

Outerspace can rap, there is no question about this. Their first album is pure heat. It has some extremely hot lyrics combined with very dope beats. The guest appearances are all off the hook. I would recommend tracks 8, 12 and 14 to anyone who loves rap. Planet and Crypt spit straight fire on those tracks. They've evolved over the years and can rightfully be considered two of the dopest MC's in the underground. If there next album has some beats produced by Stoupe it will likely be worthy of five stars.

5 out of 5 stars What hip hop should be.......2006-04-02

This album builds on a momentum of raw rhymes, ridiculously catchy hooks, thumping beats and a huge amount of energy to keep things going to the very last track -- like a few of the other reviews noted, there is not a weak song on here.

Crypt and Planetary complement each other perfectly as they go back and forth destroying every beat. The rhymes are thuggish and witty, both violent and aggressive without resorting to the cliches of mainstream hip hop. On "Gods and Generals": "You could stick Planetary in a circle of thieves, Imma still have the same $#!& I came with when I leave." On "Fire and Fire" Crypt describes his hunger: "I need one mic, one chance and one glance / one fight, one dance to become champ." The Jedi Mind influence is apparent -- on "Cutthroats," Planetary warns over a Spanish guitar beat: "To harm me exact, you're gonna need an army attack / then I'll wash away your soldiers like the laundry in fact / I'm raunchy on wax, you don't really want me to snap." Every guest appearance is on point, especially Celph Titled and Immortal Technique, who come through with blazing verses.

Even though I love Jedi Mind Tricks, to me this album is like a better version of JMT: the same energy and a similar rhyme style over beats that are almost as good as Stoupe's, without the frustrating repetition of Vinny Paz-style lyrical content. This is a case of proteges who have become just as good or better than their mentor, and that's a good surprise. If you like raw underground hip hop, the chances are very good you will like this album.

5 out of 5 stars Why are more people not into this?!.......2005-07-27

OK, this album is GREAT...esp. tracks 8 and 9...all star guest appearances -- 7 w/Sadat X...King Syze...Immortal Technique and 7L&Esoteric..and the track produced by and featuring Celph-Titled (seriously, does anyone have a better sense of humor in rap than Celph-Titled? Every track he's on, it's like a Joe Pesci in Goodfellas-worthy supporting performance, Eric Gagne closing out the 9th in his Cy Young season, you get the idea... If you like Celph, get Apathy's "It's the Bootleg..." ASAP and be amazed by how his presence on the mic has progressed dramatically over time. Love Celph.)
Anyway, if you like high energy rap...the kind of stuff that makes you want to chug a Red Bull and run 5 miles (or maybe that's just me), get this now. If you like the "feel" of Jedi Mind Tricks but also feel Vinnie Paz's verses are starting to sound a bit repetetive, this is absolutely for you.
...Can't wait for the Demigodz album, whenever it comes it...

4 out of 5 stars really a 4.5, they make me proud to say im from philadel.......2005-06-08

both of these rappers; Crypt the war child, and Planetary, are some of philly's best underground MCs right now. They both prove it on this cd "blood and ashes" you need to cop this cd if you think you are a real hip hop dude, this cd needs to find its way in your cd player some how, because this is raw, just listen to songs like "angels of death" and "blades of glory" also"the revolution" and many more. Take my word for it you need this album.

Product Description

"The War That Plagues The Lands is an incredible concept album that ranks right up there with some of the best bands in the genre... The guitars are brought forward much more on this disc and the keyboards, while still a vital part, are pushed back in the mix allowing for a much more extreme sound. Vocally, Shamgar has improved greatly with some horrifying blackish shrieks. It seems like the biggest improvement is that he's upped the aggression factor in his vocals. Also present are some occasional death growls, eerie chanting and some beautifully haunting female vocals. All of the different vocals are placed perfectly in every instance and never sound forced. Musically, the band never settles for one sound as the songs range from blistering, to mid-paced, to slow and somber; all fitting nicely and creating an extremely dark atmosphere with a very cohesive feel. My favorite tunes on this CD are "A Dragon's Children", "And Thus It Burns" and "Of Slumber and Death". But really, there is not a downer on the whole album. If all this wasn't enough, the production, packaging and artwork are top notch. When classic black metal releases are mentioned in the future, this disc will stand tall right alongside masterpieces like Horde's Hellig Usvart and Antestor's The Return of the Black Death." -The Whipping Post

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album by my favorite band.......2005-12-18

Simply put I love this album. This band is heavy, powerful and extreme black metal. Unfortunately they don't get the respect they deserve in the black metal community for one reason...they are Christians. Speaking as a fan of Emperor and Dissection this is head and shoulders above them all. When I got out of the black metal scene and wanted to find Christian alternatives, Slechtvalk was one of the first I found. I realized I had found a band that was the equal (and superior) of Emperor. This is a must-have for any black metal collection.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme Excellent Black Metal.......2005-10-26

It's sad that because the lyrics are positive this band may not get much notice. When it comes to black metal this band is awesome. Not really breaking new ground but excelling in the genre none the less. I don't always agree with the "professional" reviews Amazon has, but this reviewer nailed it. If you like extreme metal at all this band deserves a listen.

Product Description

This is the second release from the fantastic band from Ukraine which interleaves Celtic folk influences with the speed riffing and technicality of death and black metal. Originally released only in Ukraine, Bombworks Records has made this incredible CD available for the rest of the world to hear. This release features more Celtic influences and more melody than the first release, with a heavier emphasis on integrating the flute with the heavy guitars. It is also an enhanced CD, including as a bonus the video recorded for the incredible song "The Spring".

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Folk Metal!.......2006-05-27

Several years ago while surfing the Web I found a strange band by the name of Holy Blood. I downloaded one of their songs and was simply amazed at their style. This is an extremely talented Ukrainian folk metal band.

The songs on this album include:

1. Intro (instrumental)
2. To Heaven
3. The Spring
4. Jerusalem
5. I Flow Towards the Fate
6. Baptising of the Rus (instrumental)
7. In the Last Battle
8. Fair
9. Waves are Dancing
10. Outro (instrumental)

I like every single one of these songs. Each song is well crafted, and they aren't repetetive.

There are probably tons of bands out there that play folk metal now. I haven't heard that many folk metal bands so I can't really say if this is the cream of the crop. I have heard of an interesting German folk metal band called "Schandmaul" and I would recommend that band, although these two bands are completely different. They both play folk metal but that's the only comparison that can be made. On this album Holy Blood plays a mix of symphonic black death folk metal, whereas Schandmaul plays "just" folk rock metal.

Note: if you are thinking on purchasing the "The Wanderer" album by this band you need to know that it isn't the same style. It's a more brutal style of metal but it isn't folk metal at all. It's still good, but it's not the same and I don't want anyone to get disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2006-11-11

I am an avid supporter of Christian artists, and I am a huge metal fan. I have to say, however, that this album was a complete disappointment. It's unfortunate that the audio clips on Amazon are low quality, otherwise I would have been able to discern that the drummer uses an electronic drum set. The drumming is very poor- not just the poor quality of the electronic set, but at many times he is off tempo and doesn't play with the instruments. The vocals are laughable (I actually laughed while listening in the car). Don't get me wrong- I love both high-pitched and gutteral screams for vocals, but this was absolutely horrible. The high-pitched vocals sounded like a Smurf talking quickly, and the low-pitched vocals sounded like a Smurf trying to sound manly. The lyrical content is not all that uplifting, either. It seems as though they are trying to trick their intended audience of typical black-metal fans into thinking they're a traditional "Hail Satan"-style band, but then throwing in a few "gotchas" to indicate they indeed are Christians. From the other three reviews posted on Amazon, I can tell that Frost Like Ashes does have a following, so perhaps you may enjoy this CD afterall. If you're a typical fan of melodic metal, though, I doubt you will be interested in this offering.

5 out of 5 stars will crush you.......2006-06-02

Wow. The perfect mix of very technical death/black metal and with a few moments sounding like something off Ride The Lightning, you can't go wrong here. The music will punish with its speed as the lyrics call Christians to arms. I love it. This is as quality as any demonic drenched music and has a message of hope. For all fans of EXTREMELY heavy music. After having a hard time getting this album out here's hoping their next album goes more smoothly for them.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful..........2006-04-04

After waiting for a very long time for this cd to come out, I am very pleased at the content. They have advanced musically and the sound is wonderful on this release. The lyrics are very Christian, denouncing Satan and uplifting other Christians. If you like heavy, fast, brutal Unblack metal, this is a great release. God bless!

5 out of 5 stars ... from the dead ..........2006-02-10

After being announced something like two years ago this album has finally been released. It was originally set to be released on Sounds of the Dead records [who released their "Pure as the Blood Covered Snow" EP] but the founder of that label vanished from the face of the earth and the future of "Tophet" looked bleak ... it was put on the back burner and a new demo / EP was announced, but then came the great and mighty hero Psychoacoustix Records to rescue "Tophet" ... well unfortunately that didnt work out so well either as the release date was pushed back several times [eventually turning into something like 7 months] and then the head of the label died and the entire label suspended operation. The label did actually get some copies made at the tail end and that is why the Psychoacoustix logo is on the back cover ... but this was NOT released by that label, rather it was released by the band itself.

All of that means nothing to the actual music, but I find it interesting. The music here is much like that on "Pure As ..." only more technical, more advanced, heavier, faster, more intense ... you name it, it's more that way. The production is MUCH better, everything has a fuller, richer sound while still staying away from that 'over produced black metal' sound ... yes, keyboards play a much more prominent roll on this album than they did on the earlier EP, but rather than creating the music [leaving the guitars buzzing around somewhere in the background] they enhance the music, giving everything more atmosphere ... I am not a big fan of keyboard heavy black metal, and I like them on this album, so that says something I think.

All in all I have to say that this cd has gotten a LOT of play time since I received it a couple weeks ago, the mixture of black and death metal with just a touch of thrash here and there is pretty much perfect. I highly recommend this album, especially to those who liked "Pure As The Blood Covered Snow" ... if you liked that one this one will blow you away.

Blood Coven! of Akron, Ohio. This is a Very great Black/death Metal album. If you like Haunting Atmosphereic Keyboards and great riffing melodys this is your album. The vocals are a mix of brutal growls and black metal screams. The music is great. They dont over use the keyboards or anything else. This band keeps things mixed very well. If you want an excellent Black/Death metal album that has Vampyric atmospheres buy this album now! This band is like a cool mixture of Ancient/Marduk/Morbid Angel/ Older Mayhem. When I first seen this band live in Lorain-ohio, They were the opening act for Emperor!! This band amazed me. Definitly not your average noisy Black/Death act. You can reconize this bands music from all the others.

4 out of 5 stars Watch for this band in the future.......2006-06-30

FLA is one of the most talented bands out there. I love the way they combine elements of Black metal (their primary focus) and Death metal. Sebat is an excellent guitarist and Azahel can belt out the most beautiful yet disturbing vocals at whim. The best track on here is Adorers of Blood, although A Cruel Verse comes pretty close. Adonijah is also one of the best drummers out there as well. Hopefully, the upcoming release (Tophet) will live up to this excellent debut. As far as the band goes, I give them 5 stars. I gave the album 4 stars because the production wasn't great. The drums were loud in some songs and soft in some songs providing the inconsistent production. But the band is definitely a 5-star band. Pick this album up.

4 out of 5 stars An unbiased review.......2005-05-01

Christian Metal is an often over looked musical genre. Many talented bands are ignored for the simple fact they don't uphold the status quo Satanic stance that is all too prevalent in Metal today. This leaves only Christians to review these releases which, unfortunatly, is an obvious conflict of interest. So, for the intents and purposes of this review I will attempt to put aside all convictions, ill or otherwise, and judge solely on the musical talent displayed by the band.

Frost Like Ashes is a band that excels at the fusion of death and black metal combined with the testosterone driven riffs that characterize the early American thrash movement. The vocals range from a deeper kvlt black metal roar to a sort of Dani Filth-esque screech. The riffs encompass influences from Testament and Metallica to Darkthrone and Bathory to Death and Entombed. Rythm section is precise and hard hitting. Lyrically, it shows that they are christian though its nothing too prominent. The lyrics are fairly unintelligle and you definetely don't have to pay attention if you don't want.

Overall, this isn't one of the best albums I've ever heard but it's far from the worst. If you're inclined toward black metal, or unblack metal, whatever you choose to call it, you'll probably enjoy this release.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing heavy metal.......2005-04-02

The entire band is amazing. The icy guitar melodies are blistering and beautiful. The usage of double bass druming is incredible. The one that stands out most, however, is the vocalist. The vocals are brutal. He was known as Nyk with Possession but changed his name to Azahel for the new band. There is a reason for this. He sounds like a completly different vocalist. He does not do the same voices he did with Possession. The screaming falsettos are not there anymore. This was perhaps the biggest dissapointment for me, having been a long time fan of Possession prior to hearing this album. Nevertheless, on this album he does some amazing things with his voice that I have never heard anyone come close to doing. The black metal vocals he does are unmatched. Carcass influences can be heard at times, but for the most part, Azahel creates his own techniques. Despite the lack of falsettos, he sings two of the highest notes I have ever heard him sing in the song "A Cruel Verse". One of them is similar to a wolf howl, and the other he holds for about 20 seconds and then does this bizzarre cricket sound with it.
This album is a feat of heavy metal. I would highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Un-black.......2004-10-18

Just wow. Definatly a 5 star Christian un-black metal band. Very fast, very talented, awesome vocals. The only problem with this EP is that whoever did the mixing, was a moron. At times the drums are too loud and the guitars are too bassy, but that is because whoever mixed it is a dumbass. Other than that, definatly buy this one. I can't wait until they come out with their first full length cd, maybe they will find a better recording studio by then.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Metal is reborn!.......2004-01-19

This isn't blackmetal and this isn't deathmetal, it is darkmetal. Yes it is Christian but it is easily the best darkmetal CD ever made. BUY IT!!!

This album is simply amazing. Sadly, Royal Anguish hasn't (and may not) produce more albums like this. It's hard for me to describe what this album sounds like so I'll take the description from their site since it's apt: "Some call it hybrid metal - some call it operatic black metal - some call it a variant of death metal - but most everyone seems to call it original." Amen.

This album is packed full of different styles and this band is obviously versatile and quite talented. I love every song on this album, which, as I'm sure you know, is a rare occurence these days.

Or white metal, or cross metal....etc. I cant by the forces of nature call this black metal. If I were to say it, I have no doubt that I would burst into flames, or atleast have a bowel explosion (maybe both). I find it very funny that Antestor is playing a style of music thats very foundation is based upon the death of Christianity. Oh well, you wont see Gorgoroth supporting this band anytime soon.

Oh, and as for the cover, drawn by the most talented album cover artist of all time, Necrolord, its shockingly funny that he decided to rehash Storm of the Lights Bane/Where Dead Angels Lie considering that Dissection's ex-leader Jon Nodveit was a member of the MLO (Misanthropic Luciferian Order). Maybe ol' Necrolord found it funny in an ironic sort of way.

Oh, and as for the music, its nothing but standard faux-Darkthrone bogged down with alot of keyboards and synths.

On a final note, anyone who calls this black metal should be ground up into hamburger and fed to Varg Vikernes while he rots in jail. Maybe it will entice him to make another Filosofem.

      5 out of 5 stars Antestor - The Forsaken.......2007-05-04

When the topic of black metal arises in normal conversation, Christianity usually does not coincide with the subject. Many fans of black metal still have not heard of Antestor, but the band has made an interesting impact in the genre. Hailing from Norway, Antestor originally formed in the early 1990's and recorded their debut album titled `Martyrium' in 1994. Currently, the band has two members that includes vocalist Ronny Hansen and guitarist Lars Stokstod. One of the main reasons why I was interested in checking out this release is because Jan Axel Blomberg, known to the black metal legions as `Hellhammer' performed session drums. For Mr. Blomberg to perform drums for a Christian black metal band speaks volumes of him as a person. Christian black metal? Yes, it sounds strange, but this is true to the genre, including great production.

The opening song, `Rites of Death' starts beautifully with haunting female vocals, but it only takes a short amount of time for the heavy music to commence fire. Harsh black metal shrieks are accompanied by brutal drumming and crisp but hellish riffs. The leads are great and one knows that Emperor was one of Antestor's influences. `Raade' is a beautiful symphonic interlude that is common in symphonic black metal. `The Crown I Carry' starts with very heavy riffs and contains memorable leads throughout. `Mitt Hjerte' is another heavenly symphonic instrumental that has a flute lead. The song is very melancholy but adds to the majestic beauty of the album.

Antestor's `The Forsaken' is truly one of the finest symphonic black metal albums ever released and the bands positive message makes this a rare occurrence in the genre of black metal. It is obvious that the members have been influenced by traditional symphonic black metal and it is remarkable that they brought in Hellhammer to perform the drum duties. This release soars high and I sought fit to give it Black Metal Album of the Year in 2005. It also made my top list of nominees for 2005 Album of the Year. Antestor are masters at their craft and this is great modern symphonic black metal. May Christ be glorified through a genre that usually blasphemes his Name. Antestor are not ashamed to call themselves Christians and they should continue to impact extreme metal in a positive way in the future.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best!.......2006-07-21

This cd is grotesque! Awesome screams, very good drums, great guitar playing and much synthesizers and violins and keys, but not too much! It all blends perfectly well!
I love every song... From the soft instrumental 'raade' 'til the epic-sounding 'as I die'... At times the atmosphere is either lightened or darkened by some female opera-vocals...
Antestor is one the best black-metal bands I've heard so far... Every second of this album has my full attention...

5 out of 5 stars Epic Metal from the Sorrow Metal Masters.......2005-10-13

All I can say is wow. When I first purchased this cd I didn't know what to expect but was hearing that they were a great band. There style is really close to black metal but with a progressive spin, but at times but varies through a few melodic parts and even some symphonic interludes. The black metal part can get prett heavy and brutal, and the drumming is amazing(this is because Hellhammer was the drummer for the album). The vocals are Black Metal overall but he uses some deeper more Death Metal vocals at times, and there are also a few parts where he wispers or talks quietly. There isn't one track that isn't enjoyable. The album flows extremely well and can be best listened to all the way through. But my favorite tracks would have to be: Rites of Death, Old Times Cruelty, The Crown I Carry, and Mitt Hjerte. For any one who loves Black Metal or want to try something new.
