Even the most high-minded hip-hop connoisseur will have a hard time fronting on the booty-bounce directive, "Shake Ya Ass," surely one of 2000's most memorable songs. The lead single off Mystikal's fourth album encapsulates his whole approach: guttural, grunted directives and sexist boasts over some seriously funky production (courtesy Outkast, the Neptunes, and the Medicine Men). Check the tropical backdrop and Nivea-blessed chorus of "Danger" and the wah-wah guitar/808 combo of "Big Truck Boys" for the funk; check nearly every song for that vulgar braggin' and boastin'. The raw bass and slinky rhythm of "Smoked Out" is a nice Southern take on G-funk, and it's a welcome reprieve from the thick "come hither" machismo which dominates much of the other songs. When he's not stroking his ego, though, Mystikal does a good job getting serious too. Uncovering the bad side of the bling, tracks such as "Ain't Gonna See Tomorrow" and "Murderer III" impressively display a more socially aware and mature Mystikal. --Hua Hsu

4 out of 5 stars Rock Solid........2006-01-06

Mystikal developed a totally new style and attitude with this release. Having strayed away from the tank was the beginning of the end however but there were no signs of that on this LP. Great production and great flow make this album a southern must-have.

Notable Tracks:

Danger
Shake Ya Ass
Mystikal Fever
Ain't Gonna See Tomorrow
Neck Uv Da Woods

2 out of 5 stars Lacking.......2005-07-25

Life after No Limit wasn't very kind to Mystikal, and even with the Neptunes production this album isn't very good. The singles, "Shake Ya A*s" and "Danger" are fine, good rap songs, but as a whole the album isn't great. He doesn't have as much to say as he used to, and he spends most of his time bragging about nothing or yelling at nobody in particular for no apparent reason. This was entertaining for a few albums, but it's gotten old and without the No Limit squad, Mystikal has proven pretty one dimensional. A lot of the songs are pretty much the same, and only a few guest appearances lighten up the album. Da Brat and Petey Pablo lend an OK rhyme on "Come and see about me" and the best track is obviously "Neck Uv Da Woodz", where OutKast pretty much does the entire song. Without C-Murder and Master P and the rest of no limit, Mystikal isn't much, even though this was his most commercial success. People wanting to own some Mystikal ought to buy "Mind of Mystikal" or one of his No Limit releases.

3 out of 5 stars Its alright.......2004-12-09

Nothing special, but its OK. Not as good as his previous efforts. The radio hits are OK, [Shake Ya Ass & Danger], but they is only really one song that is "outstanding", being Neck Uv Da Woods (w/ Outkast). There are many songs that are still tight, such as I Rock, I Roll, U Would If U Could, Mystikal Fever, and Ready To Rumble, but not "outstanding". This is not a bad album at all, in fact it duznt have many "bad" tracks, but Mystikal just hasn't put enough into it. Better than latter releases though. A good listen, so still pick this cd up even if you are just a rap fan, but don't expect too much from it.

2 out of 5 stars I have 2 words for this CD.......2004-09-29

And that's broken record! The last CD Mystikal did before dis (Ghetto Fabulous)was off tha chains! This one ain't! For instance, the first track is pretty much like the 7th one except it's like a clean remix. He doesn't yell as much which he's known for. If it was produced from no limit then maybe it would rise a lil higher to impressive. Now he has his greatest hits oot while serving time.

4 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM IS THA SHIZNIT.......2004-09-12

This album is awesome i've had this album for like over a year n a half now and i still listen to it like every day this alum would definitely be in the top 30 out of all my albums. the best songs are "shake ya a**", "ready to rumble", "jump", "danger", "i rock, i roll" & my fave "mystikal fever".

As the No Limit tank rolls ever onward, the burden of excellence increasingly falls upon Mystikal to provide compelling reason to listen to the label's output. While the other soldiers have let complacency stagnate their skills, Mystikal (along with Mia X) pushes on. Ghetto Fabulous picks up where Unpredictable left off: Mystikal spends his time embarrassing his No Limit peers (even Snoop!) and regaling the listener with even more well-constructed street sagas--all delivered with that unharnessed flow that is his trademark. Most appropriately, he pairs up with New York sound-alike Busta Rhymes for "Whacha Want, Whacha Need," a sonic gumbo laced with Caribbean spice. --Jon Caramanica

4 out of 5 stars Pretty dope album.......2006-11-18

The south don't have the best lyricist for me. But damn can they come up with some of the illest beats. This album got some dope beats. Mystical is one of my favorites though. You can feel his mic presence like he's right next to you. There is a few standout tracks. My favorties are Smell smoke and Ghetto fabulous. Lets go do it would be the best one to me. But Silk ruined that whole track for me. His flow was just too idiotic and he sounded like a second rate amatuer next to Snoop and Mystical. Still dope album.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2006-07-01

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Althusserian Obsequies.......2006-04-14

With this groundbreaking album, Mystikal's move from a structuralist account in which capital is understood to structure social relations in relatively homologous ways to a view of hegemony in which power relations are subject to repetition, convergence, and rearticulation brought the question of temporality into the thinking of structure, and marked a shift from a form of Althusserian theory that takes structural totalities as theoretical objects to one in which the insights into the contingent possibility of structure inaugurate a renewed conception of hegemony as bound up with the contingent sites and strategies of the rearticulation of power

4 out of 5 stars Something worth riding to.......2005-11-29

Mystikal delivers fantastic songs with this one. You have just got to love his vocals and lyrics he brings to the table. The album starts off well with it's intro and from there on out you stay hooked on it.

The only problem I had with it was, it can give you a headache. But be sure when your mad, just pop this in a walkmen and be on your way. :)

Don't mistake the rollicking, cantankerous, belligerent, and scattershot verbal delivery of Mystikal as a marker of ignorance. Behind those layers of verbal masking lies some of the most insightful and capable lyricism coming out of the entire No Limit camp. Not that that's a high bar to cross, but Mystikal is apt to fall into the cracks, too easily dismissed as a vocal novelty. On Unpredictable, supported by the requisite Beats by the Pound production team, he dances with the usual themes, though his lyrics and presence are a notch above the rest. Most absorbing are "Murder 2" and "Shine," both tracks written for his murdered sister. The latter is an ode, and the former a harrowing fantasy of revenge against her killer, both delivered with an additional, pained twinge of vocal expressivity. --Jon Caramanica

5 out of 5 stars Unpredictably his best album.......2007-06-24

Mystikal was doing his thing with Jive before No Limit. Mind Of Mystikal was great and I didnt think was going to top that one until I heard this one. The first track Born 2 Be A Soldier was slammin(even though they could have kept Silkk away from that song). Murder 2 picks up where Murderer on the first album left off as Mystikal lets off some steam at his sister's killer. Unpredictable, 13 Years, U Cant Handle This, The Man Right Chea is Mystikal at his best. As usual Mystikal always has his smoke record on each album and Still Smokin' is the best one out of all of them. D*** On The Track and It Yearns(which samples T La Rock's Its Yours) are Mystikal flexing his lyrical muscles and he does a good job too. Even though this album is tight it does have its flaws. Silkk The Shocker should have never been on Aint No Limit and Born 2 Be A Soldier. Sleeping With Me is kind of bland and Gangstas(features Snoop and Master P) was soso. The album ends with a nice tribute to his sister which is called Shine. Bottom Line: Mystikal was at his best on Unpredictable which is his best album to date. He was hungrier here than he sounds now and the production was great. This unquestionably one of the best No Limit releases. Standout Tracks: BORN 2 BE A SOLDIER, MURDER 2, 13 YEARS, UNPREDICTABLE, GHETTO CHILD, HERE WE GO, STILL SMOKIN, U CANT HANDLE THIS, THE MAN RIGHT CHEA, D*** ON THE TRACK and IT YEARNS.

2 out of 5 stars Good album --- What are you listening to??.......2005-08-10

The best album ever, PLEASE, this album is not even close to being good. Of the 17 songs on here, 2 are good, about 6 are ok, and the rest are just plain bad. My least favorite No Limit cd of the 15 or so I have (clkose with Snoop's "Da Game Is to Be Sold..." album). Not even the No Limit guests (which oddly there aren't nearly as many as any other release) can bring this up to even an ok album. Yeah Mr. Puzzleface can rap fast but that don't make him good. His flow is way off beat and he can't rap either, and the sad part is this is his best cd. Production is decent, but not as good as Beats by the Pound crew usually is (the wack rapper on the mic is probably the main reason). Craig B does 6 songs, KLC does 5, O'Dell does 2, and Rick Rock, DJ Darryl, Studio Ton, and Legendary Traxster all do 1. So when he asks -- Did I Do It? I answer yes, you made a horrible cd. Unless for some odd reason you're one of the bunch of idiots who like him or comemrcial down south music save you money and ear drums on this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever.......2003-01-07

This album speaks for itself. There is no cd ever came out that was better than this on.(If you can find one than e-mail me). Mystikal, I Think, on this album comes with his best raps ever. The first song on the album tells you how hard he is coming. He is the best rapper to ever live. So the only think I can say about this album is, There is not another better and if you don't have it you need to go and get as fast as you can. Because you know this {will} sell like some hotcakes.

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece.......2002-02-16

Man, I've never been so delighted with a South hip-hop album like I am with this one! I always thought the dirty south didn't deliver good hip hop untill I heard 'bout Mystikal! I loved his voice right away when I heard it! I went out and searched for all his CD's but the first 3 aren't available here so I went to England and picked them up there... And I got to say it is worth it, these CD [are good]! His ruff voice and superfast flow can't be compaired to any other rapper, you could say Mystikal is one of a kind! And them ol' dirty south beats on this joint are just smokin' , it is an allmost flawless album! I like every track, from the first to the last! But if I have to give the best tracks I would have to say... Damn, I can't choose, the whole CD's great!! Really, you have to believe me, it doesn't matter if you like east, west, north or south, you'll like this, no matter what! This is defenitly No Limit at it's best! Just buy it and find out!

Whoa now, Heard this back when it first came out and I still bump it from time to time nowadays. Free Mystikal

5 out of 5 stars Mystikal first rapper i got into.......2005-04-03

Im from Westbank New Orleans (Harvey) so this album was pretty big around there. This is by far Mystikal's best album. His flow is fast, slow, loud, and soft...he keeps it fresh, changing up his flow throughout the song. The beats are so shyve, much better than P's stuff when he went to No Limit. From the dark beats of Murderer and Mind of Mystikal to the flava of Yall aint ready yet and Here I go, Mystikal never ceases to impress me. This album was made when he was on the top of his game, and his album shows it. 10/10.

5 out of 5 stars At His Best.......2005-03-31

Mystikal is definitely at his best on this album nowadays Kal ain't all that and of course with his rape charges i guess he put out the greatest hits to get some kind of an appeal goin(haha) yea thats kinda wrong but hey its the truth i guess but this album along with "Unpredictable" and "Ghetto Fabulous" are his absolute best works I have all 3 and still bump every one of them definitely worth your money Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars MYSTIKAL'S BEST ALBUM.......2005-01-19

This album is awesome! The best songs are "Ya'll Ain't Ready Yet", "Beware", "Mr. Hood Critic", "I'm", "Out That Boot Camp Clicc", "Here I Go" & "Ya'll Ain't Ready Yet (Remix)". This album is definately worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Best Mystikal album EVER!!!.......2005-01-09

This mystikal album ain't nuthin' like the rest of his albums. In this album, he doesn't scream as much and he he raps decently fast. His flows are more layed back in this one. Like, in the song, "murderer" he starts off real layed back and slow with "muthaf**kin' murderah, shot my f**kin' brotha." Then loud and mad soundin' with "BUT WHEN I FIND HIM I'M A GET THAT MUTHAF**KA!!!" This is by far the best mystikal album ever. I haven't found it in any stores lately, though so you might want to get it soon.

On Mystikal's last effort, Let's Get Ready, his rapid-fire flows and throaty vocal delivery created two chart-busting singles, "Shake Ya Ass" and "Danger," that became a part of the hip-hop canon for 2000. On Tarantula, Mystikal attempts to duplicate those same sounds and energies with mixed results. "Bouncin' Back (Bumpin' Me Against the Wall)" comes off sounding like a "Shake Ya Ass, Part 2" with much less bite, despite the lyrical potshots hurled at Osama bin Laden and the Pharrell Williams hook. Likewise, "If It Ain't Live, It Ain't Me" reads like a subpar dance-floor equivalent to "Danger." A large bulk of the tracks here are forgettable because of Mystikal's lyrical and thematic limitations. How many different ways can one rap about chasing skirts and boast about sexual prowess? The oversexed rapper juvenalia on "P***y Crook's" or "That's the S**t" come off sounding lame. The collaborations with Redman and Method Man ("Get It Started") and Juvenile ("Settle the Score")--with the latter track soundly squashing any alleged beefs between the two New Orleans-based MCs' former camps--Master P's old No Limit empire, and Cash Money Millionaires save this release from making a fast entry into the bargain bins. Unlike Let's Get Ready, Tarantula carries all bark and little bite. --Dalton Higgins

4 out of 5 stars This tarantula bites (3 and 1/2 stars).......2007-02-05

I've been listening to Mystikal since Mind Of Mystikal up to now and I can say that Let's Get Ready and Ghetto Fabulous was garbage, Tarantula is alright. Standout Tracks: BOUNCIN BACK, TARANTULA, IF IT AINT LIVE IT AINT ME, SETTLE THE SCORE(Juvenile floored him), P**** CROOK(comical), OOOOH YEAH(straight even though the hook is lame), SMOKE ONE and I GET IT STARTED(I like Redman and Method Man's verse). Filler: Go Head(boring chick song),Big Truck Driver, Paper Stack(Im glad his crew never came out because they suck and this song is proof), The Return, That's That S***(original version off the foolish soundtrack was way better). Bottom Line: Tarantula is better than his two previous stinkers Lets Get Ready and Ghetto Fabulous. The production for the most part is nice and Mystikal sounds a lot more clearer than usual. Keep your head up Mystikal. Even though what you did to land in jail was really dumb all is forgiven.

4 out of 5 stars terrificantula.......2005-03-25

mystikal's album "tarantula" is great. this album is classic album that should've sold as much as his previous "let's get ready" album. starting off with the hit single "bouncin back", the hot neptunes produced track, kinda jazzy sounding, is a great intro to the album. following that is "if it ain't live", the song that should've bounced the album to platinum status. it's a hot track maan check it out. "settle the score" is history: it features the first ever collabo with a no limit soldier and a cash money boy. juvenile does a great job on the beat here. after that "p%$^y crook" and the next song are very forgettable, not worth being on the album. scott storch drops in for a beat on "alright", the "storching" hot track with mystikal providing good raps. "i get it started", the next track that features meth tical and funk docta spot (red and meth), contains freestyle verses by all parties and a notably hot beat by the infamous rockwilder. check this one out maan. the ensuing track called "paper stack" features a trumpet player in the beat and typical southern drum patterns while sporting mystikal's up and coming rappers from his clique. it's very catchy and has some good raps. finally the album closes with "the return" which is a guitar lick filled number in which mystikal states that he's not through. to wrap things up, this album was pretty darn good and deserved platinum status, but of course the z100 tools determine if it's a good album or not, which they decided that it wasn't. they loved "let's get ready" but paid no mind to this. however, who cares what they think this is a cool album with party clubbin styled beats so cop it whoadie!

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 STARS.......2005-01-26

This album is pretty good, but not as good as Mystikal's other albums. My favourite track is definitely "Tarantula" Featuring Butch Cassidy. Most of the other tracks aren't anything special though. If you're a big Mystikal fan it's probably worth getting, but don't expect it to be as good as his other albums.

I am a long time Mystikal fan and this cd is only average. I was looking for his old style of flow but this is more dance music than vintage Mystikal. Still a aight cd though. If you are an fan of mystikal like I am then you should purchase this.

5 out of 5 stars His greatest hits.......2007-04-30

As a greatest hits cd , Prince of the South does Mystikal justice. It has all the classics like Here I Go, The Man Right Chea, Y'all Aint Ready Yet, Murder 2, Thats the N**** etc. It also has two unreleased joints which are Hypno and P**** Pop. Hypno is a tight club record but P**** Pop is alright. All in all it gives all the jams from Mystikal before he got locked up.

4 out of 5 stars Here Come A New Man and A.............2004-08-04

After not hearing from this artist in so long since(Tarantula), I decided that this cd should be holding more anticipation than any before. Mystikal, has been though some hard time as in a magazine I read that had Mystikal gone to prison for a reason I don't know. My title explains that Mystikal has become a new person, but still has the same flow. Thanks for reading my REVIEW of this particular subject. -- Unknown

MYSTIKAL IS THE BEST HE'S CAME A LONG WAY AND I'M SO GLAD HE LEFT MASTER STUPID P.MASTER P I DON'T LIKE YOU (YOUR WACK)MYSTIKAL IS FINE WHERE HE IS BEFORE I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT MYSTIKAL WAS TALKING ABOUT.BEFORE HE WAS LIKE BLAH BLAH BLAH AND NOW HE SAYS HE'S WORDS CLEAR AND THAT MAKES HIM THE BEST RAPPER OUT THERE.JAY-Z IS OKAY BUT MYSTIKAL COMES FIRST AND I LOVE YOU MYSTIKAL YOU GO BOY.

4 out of 5 stars Mystikal Best Work To Date.......2000-10-30

What makes this album so good is quite simply that you pay for a album by Mystikal and thats exaactly what you get unlike his last two efforts where almost every song contained guest rappers. Which is fine if your style is of rapping is straight foward but with Mystikal he is at his best when he has the whole track to himself and he is allowed to do his natural flow a perfect example of this is in the tracks Jump and Aint Gonna See Tomorrow where he shows the listners why he deserves much more limelight than he has received in the past .What also makes this album so good is that the beats come for a variety of producers so unlike his No Limit albums there is a real difference between the songs he even teams up with his producer from his first album Presice for a track .So without a doubt if you are a Mystikal fan this is a must have what makes this even more sweet is that by the end of the album you are left with the feeling that as a rapper he is still to reach his full potential and yet even if this album is not as good as he one day will do it still buries 90percent of the albums in the market these days

    5 out of 5 stars Mystikal's Best.......2000-09-28

Mystikal has proven to us on this CD that he is No Limits Finest. His Up Tempo Beats, Ear Catchin Lyrics and Wild Style are just some of the things you will notice on his album. On this CD, Mystikal goes all out like on the Hot Summer Jam " Shake Ya A** " which is one of my favorite tracks on the Cd along with Danger(Been So Long), Jump, I Rock I Roll,Ain't Gonna See Tomorrow, Murderer III and Family. You Will Also notice that this album doesn't feature as many other artist as any of his past CD's. On This CD there's the song "Danger" which features Nivea and the song "Come See About Me" which feature Da Brat and Petey Pablo. As I said before this is Mystikal's best CD and if you buy it you will get more than your moneys worth.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Jazz CD in 2006.......2006-06-20

I saw this review in All About Jazz and thought it appropriate for the CD. This CD is a must for anyone interested in good music. Better than any of the other jazz and jazz/fusion CDs this year. It's gotta be - he's the one they are listening to for their inspiration. (the untold secret) A reviewer after seeing Roney's performance at the 2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said that he didn't want to hear any more Chris Botti - after Roney. I agree.

Trumpeter Wallace Roney has been working in jazz for over thirty years. He made his recording debut at age fourteen and played in the bands of Tony Williams, Art Blakey, David Murray and Herbie Hancock--just to name a few. A bandleader on his own for many years, Roney has dazzling chops and has composed some classic songs. He's never led a bad group, and when I saw him at Chicago's Green Mill in late August, the band was dazzling--powerful but supple, densely layered but capable of immediate transition.

Roney's most famous mentor was, of course, Miles Davis. It can't be denied that Davis' work and example still color Roney's music. His mentoring has also been as much curse as blessing, having forced Roney to endure years of facile, simplistic comparisons to Miles. None of this should obscure the fact that Roney has a fine body of recorded work as a leader. In recent years--to some extent under the radar--he's produced a run of especially superlative recordings. 1996's Village was the end of his long assocition with Warner Bros., but his 2000 album No Room For Argument (Stretch Records) was, to these ears, his finest album to date; 2004's Prototype and the new Mystikal (both on HighNote Records) have continued Roney's streak of great CDs.

We're all the sum of our experiences. Few can say that their lives haven't been influenced in some way by the views or work of others. So when people latch onto the effect that Miles Davis had on trumpeter Wallace Roney, it's fair to ask, "so what?"

Roney hung with Miles during his formative years, and the impact of the experience on his development is something he makes no attempt to cover up. But anyone who has listened to Roney's voice--most notably beginning with `97's Village, where he began to assimilate African rhythms and more electric orchestration, and continuing through last year's fine HighNote debut Prototype--will realize that in some ways Roney is no different than anyone else. His approach may be filtered through myriad influences from Coltrane to Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi group and early Weather Report, but at the end of the day he sounds like nobody but himself.

Mystikal continues Roney's progression. With the same core group as on Prototype--pianist/keyboardist Geri Allen, reed player Antoine Roney, keyboardist Adam Holzman, bassist Matt Garrison, and drummer Eric Allen--it's not just about the evolution of the leader's approach, this time it's also about the evolution of a collective sound.

Roney's approach is becoming increasingly all-inclusive. Two common threads tie together these original pieces, ranging from the rhythmically complex, all-acoustic title track to the more propulsive and electric "Stargaze" and "NiceTown." The thematic conception focuses on breaking down bar lines and creating longer form melodies that float ethereally above the rhythm section; and an open collective approach allows these structured pieces to breathe.

A diverse set of covers mingle with original compositions. The acoustic quartet reading of Kenny Dorham's "Poetic" demonstrates that Roney hasn't completely left his post bop roots behind--as does Bud Powell's ballad "I'll Keep Loving You," a gorgeous duet with Allen that closes the album. Looking to more contemporary sources, a joyously danceable version of rapper Slick Rick's reggae tune "Hey Young World" feels faithful until the end of each phrase, where an ambiguous chord hangs and breaks things up. The Temptations ballad "Just My Imagination" is equally carefree, exposing Roney at his most tender.

Most revealing is the opening track. "Atlantis" retains composer Wayne Shorter's harmonic complexity, but it opens up expansively for Roney's probing solo, which is spare, lyrical, and emotionally to-the-point, without a note wasted. Over the course of Wallace's last four records, brother Antoine has proved his association is all about the playing and has nothing to do with nepotism. The Shorter influence is clear but, as with Wallace, it would be unfairly dismissive to leave it at that. Allen, of course, has her own career; but when she plays with husband Wallace Roney, there's a simpatico that comes from shared life experiences beyond the musical. Garrison is one of today's best young bassists--lithe and virtuosic, yet always keeping his ears open.

As Roney's concept becomes more eclectic, it paradoxically becomes more focused. Mystikal continues his path towards combining past and present--with, most importantly, a clear eye on the future.
