Middle of the road wedding music.......2007-01-20

I bought this cd because I had everything in my wedding planned to the last tiny detail except the ceremony music. All the songs on the cd are nice traditional wedding songs. I did not use any of the music from the cd, but I am glad I bought it because it helped me realize that traditional wedding music was not what I wanted. All and all a nice classical music cd but not for brides who really want a personal ceremony. BTW I went with Enya and Lorena McKennitt.

We wanted traditional wedding music and found it in this CD. I'm no music expert, but the arrangements and performances seemed fine. I would definitely recommend this CD for any bride looking for a concise collection of traditional wedding pieces.

Most Chosen Selections.......2006-03-13

As a wedding officiant, my wife and I are often asked to assist the couple with other services for their ceremony, such as music. For this, we have a very large selection in our music library to choose from. We have put together a catalog of cd's that we loan out to the couple for their review, and most often, their selections come from BRIDE'S GUIDE TO WEDDING MUSIC.

If you're planning a traditional or formal wedding on a budget, this cd has it all. There are even two selections of Wagner's "Wedding March" to choose from. Only two of the selections have vocals, the rest are all extraordinary instrumental selections.

Often, even around the house or in my car, I find myself listening to this cd. The music is soothing, refreshing, uplifting and most enjoyable. I recommend this cd over all other wedding music cd's.

Another Great Reference CD.......2006-01-09

This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume 2, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs; just about everything on here is standard fare for weddings. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over potential music selections with an organist, a string quartet, etc. Like my review for Volume 2, I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner. BTW: beware of reviewers who don't use their names, especially "A music fan." This is most likely the producer of the "Wedding Traditions" CD and he slanders other CDs so his will look better. You'd think that in the wedding music business people would have better ethics, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. The best advice I can give, as a classical musician myself, if to take time to listen to the sound clips, and if possible, try to find them on iTunes where they might sound higher quality. This is the only real way of knowing whether the CD is right for you.

One word--LIFESAVER.......2005-10-04

I live in a very noisy dormatory and often have trouble falling asleep. I've found that this disc, with its relaxing pieces, is able to calm me enough that I can get a decent amount of rest each night.

I'm not saying the songs on here are boring, though. They are well-performed. Many of them were familiar to me before I first played this disc, others were not. I am very diverse in my musical tastes and appreciate this music. However, the relaxation value one gets from a CD like this one is much more than one could expect from a band like Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, The Police, or Crash Test Dummies to name a few.

Even if you don't live in a noisy dorm this is a good CD to relax to. It's also good dinner music and is perfect for when that special sweetie is in your car with you en route to a five star restaraunt. (Hopefully it comes on cassette so I can play it in my car, too!)

Richard Clayderman also has put out numerous other albums. One that I have been unable to find in CD but have on LP record is "A Romantic Christmas", which includes many great piano arrangments of popular Christmas songs including arguably the best version of "Silver Bells" I've ever heard, including all the ones with vocals that have passed through my ears over my lifetime.

Richard Clayderman first came to my attention in the early 1970's when I used to spend a lot of time in Europe on business. He has a very distinctive piano style when playing either classical or popular. His backup band for popular music, including excellent drums, tuba, violins and more, is very good.

This particular album, if you like classical music played with a flair, is excellent; so good, in fact, that I am buying additional copies for special people.

And, yes, I am well over the age of 13.

Not THAT bad,but..........2005-05-23

Let's just say that even if I really dislike Clayderman,I have never underated his pianistic talents.I borrowed this CD from a friend and was surprised that the pianist famous with performances of mundane pop songs is able to fit into the demands of some really serious classical masterpieces such as the Tchai 1 or the Rach 2.However,JUST AS I PREDICTED,Clayderman would not play these masterpieces in their entirety.For a serious classical music fan,excerpts would never be of much value.It would be really stupid to compare Clayderman's performance of the great concertos with the other 'greats' such as Cliburn,Zimerman or Argerich,but some passages in Clayderman's performance really seem cheesy to me.This is an album which might be an option for beginners of classical music.But a 'professional' classical music fan really needs much more than any performance of a work.

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1.......2002-11-16

I am --------, and I have played Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. An expressive work which requires great passions, Clayderman has often been too loud, breaking the melodious balance between the orchestra and the piano. I was tuned off already by the first few chords, which were struck too loudly. There also lacks a element of surprise and Russian animosity in this recording, which Jorge Bolet and Evgeny Kissin both capture in their recordings with Dutoit and Karajan, respectively.

The Peak Of Romantic Classics.......2002-01-11

While Richard Clayderman is not well known in the USA, his work is commonplace in South Africa and Europe. I enjoyed the original LP version of this CD as a 8 year old and through the wonders of e-commerce have been able to track the CD down. I loved his rendition of Beethoven's work so much that I used the music for the bridal march at my wedding.Definately worth the ten bucks if you're a Romantic Classic nut.

E-40's Quintessential Masterpiece - A Bay Area CLASSIC!.......2007-07-11

E-40 was a long-time veteran in the rap game when his seminal album "In a Major Way" was released in 1995. It's really the album that got E-40 noticed by a mainstream audience, and pushed Jive to ultimately stuff more money into his forthcoming albums (the next being "Hall Of Game" [1996]). This album rides the line between independent and mainstream lines ridiculously well. As far as rapping goes, E-40 is at the very top of his game, boasting his slang-filled flow with a cunning wit, that is arguably in peak form. Most notably, some of the best west coast rappers came to support Forty's untouchable style - 2Pac, Mac Mall & Spice 1 - who all perform flawlessly on the classic posse track "Dusted 'n' Disgusted".

"Da Bumble" kicks off the album right after a solid intro. From this point on, we catch a glimpse of what the production will sound like throughout, although minimal, it bangs nicely. The production is mainly kept in-house, and is handled by Mike Mosley, Studio Ton & Funk Daddy among others. There are some stellar tracks here! "Sideways" featuring The Click's B-Legit & Mac Shawn is probably my favorite. The beat is tight, and is one of my favorite appearances from B-Legit. "Spittin'" is also one of my favorites. The album's front half burns brightly with bangers like these...it almost feels front-loaded with the goods, but truly boasts quality through and through. Then comes perhaps E-40's greatest single - "Sprinkle Me". The Click's Suga-T performs immaculately alongside Forty Water. The beat is tight and the lyrics are true to form. Other standouts are the aforementioned "Dusted 'n' Disgusted", and the breakthrough single "1-Luv". The quality of album tracks in the mix leaves the album free of filler.

Consistent quality has always been part of E-40's repertoire. Consistently enjoyable full albums are another thing. "In a Major Way" is definitely his most consistent effort to date. Although the beat-makers will prove to hit harder on later albums, there has never been a set of beats/collaborators that E-40 has worked better with. This is one of the albums that defines the Bay Area in the rap world.

Major League.......2007-01-25

The third solo release, In A Major Way, from the self-proclaimed "Ambassator of the Bay" delivers a complete project with mainstream success. E-40 speaks over "Intro" as he gives the ingredients contained in this album that ties with "Da Bumble" both produced by Sam Bostic & Mike Mosley with speed variences. The objective is definately arranged for the trunk as 40 Water flows without any hooks, chorus or breaks, but his original multi-styled flow with charisma and energy as quoted "...he say / she say / b*tch, that away..." "Sideways" featuring B-Legit & Mac Shon is for the riders hitting the strip or the block as E and B share verses highlighted by the catchy hook. "...big timer, timer / 40 water..." "Sprinkle Me" featuring Suga T had all the perfect elements with a memerable hook, perfect delivery and production makes this a highlight with a mainstream feel. Taking it to the streets with all star support from 2Pac, Mac Mall & Spice 1 on "Dusted 'N' Disgusted" as each shined with their signature flow. Performed as a letter to a friend in jail "1-Luv" featuring Leviti poses the reality of simply living and E-40 did not miss a beat. Relating to getting high and getting drunk for serious smokers and drinkers, "Smoke 'N' Drank", was written with just that in mind. "Dey Ain't No" is dark with an incessant deep bass enriched by a piano silhouette to give this LP a more street feel. Speaking about the street games, E-40 spits on how to invest into businesses for a legal hustle on "Fed" featuring Suga T. Sharing verses with B-Legit & Celly Cel representing the "H.I. Double L." side of Vallejo, California on how they live. "It's All Bad" is about life in the ghetto and changing times comparing it to excerpts found in the Bible. This song was enlighened at the conclusion with a surprise guest by E-40's son with a solid performance. The "Outro" only left the listener craving another dosage of this sixteen track album.

Mr. Fonzarelli's finest Work.......2006-09-14

This is one of the best albums evermade regardless of region. The source misspoke and caused a major injustice when this album was only given 3.5 mics upon its release. In a Major Way is the rarified classic where you literally dont have to skip a single track. It has 12 songs and every single one exemplifies pure fire. The best tracks, if you want to single out any are The Bumble, Sideways, Sprinkle Me, Dusted n Disgusted(featuring 2pac at his finest), Fed, H-I-Double L Side, 1 Luv, and Bootsie. If you dont own this, get it now, you've been sleeping on a west coast classic for all to enjoy.

4.5 stars, Great Westcoast Album.......2006-04-20

E-40, Forty Water, whatever you want to call him is a bit of an aquired taste, even though I heard his music years ago, it took me until this year to finally check out 1 of his albums. I first heard him on Aint Hard To Find off 2Pac's All Eyez On Me, and I was thinking who the f*ck is this guy? His goofy voice and rapid fire flow took me quite a while to get used to, but after bumping Dusted & Disgusted for a long time I decided to pick up In A Major Way.

I had to order this from Amazon as there are literally no copies of this album in England, you just can't get hold of stuff like this, and I was surprised by how great it was. E-40 has long been known as an innovator (something hiphop is sorely lacking), both in terms of his unique flow, and his vast slang vocabulary which so many others have bitten over the years. This album according to most people is when he was at his peak in both, though I can't comment as this is the only album of his I own (I do intend to buy more though). My favourite track is still Dusted & Disgusted ft Spice 1, 2Pac & Mac Mall, which is a westcoast classic, but other classics include 1 Luv and the amazing Smoke N Drank. Pretty much every other track is tight, the only reason i don't quite give it 5 stars is because of a couple of filler tracks (Dey Aint No & Bootsee, which is terrible). Production is top notch throughout, some classic westcoast beats that really bump.

Recommended to any hiphop fans, especially westcoast, if you can get past his wierd voice & flow you will see that some of his lyrics are actually pretty clever. He raps about the same things most westcoast rappers do, but he does it creatively, if you can't follow him just get a lyrics sheet and listen up, very good album 4.5 stars, another case for half stars at Amazon.

man, this is cd is FIRE, man fo reel. this is his best work in my opinion. u can pop this in and play it thru, E-Fo Day drops heat on this one. id give it 10 stars if i could. go buy this NOW, goddammit. the best songs are: ALL OF 'EM

The nature of Alexander's Feast is perhaps better summed up by its other title, The Power of Music. It is a celebratory ode for St. Cecilia's Day, written by Dryden in 1697 for the traditional celebration of the patron saint of music and set in celebratory style by Handel in 1736. At its first performance that year, he incorporated two delightful concertos, one for harp and one for organ, and these are included on this recording. Winner of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritic prize.

This performance of Alexander's Feast is, in my opinion, exactly right for the work; beautiful, clear voices singing the solos with good diction, a lovely balance in the small chorus, and superb playing of appropriate instruments for the piece and for the period. The notes on the flyer are also excellent, presenting the background and intention of the work.

I just attended a live performance of Alexander's Feast and I saw many people who probably never heard anything else than Messiah, suddenly finding out that there is more to Handel than Hallelujah chorus. This music is exciting and original, you may know several arias like "War he said is toil and trouble" or "Revenge!" but it is great as a complete work. It was written for St. Cecilia's Day celebration, then re-written several times, but it remains as a beautiful example of Handel's mastery in choral composition and writing showcase arias. The soloists are great, especially Ian Partridge, and the chorus is outstanding. This is a wonderful performance of one of Handel's great works.

Handel's Great "Feast" in an Impeccable Rendition.......2005-08-22

"Alexander's Feast," Handel's 1736 setting of Dryden's ode in honor of St. Cecilia's Day (patron saint of music) is a masterpiece and a delight, but its odd length - too long for a mixed program, too short for a full evening - gave Handel trouble and apparently still presents a problem: this is at present the only recording of this inspired work in the catalogue, though some good ones have come and gone. Fortunately, this reissue of the Sixteen's 1990 version is first-rate, in fact the best I ever recall hearing, with chorus, orchestra, soloists and conductor all in top form. Furthermore, music director Harry Christophers has wisely chosen to include the two concerti - one for harp, the other for organ - that Handel inserted in his original performances. Not only do they lengthen the piece to a satisfactory 115', they serve a satisfactory dramatic purpose by representing respectively the power of music in its pagan form - the bard Timotheus's lyre represented by the harp - and Christian - Cecilia's (apocryphal) organ. Both receive sparkling interpretations here.
If you enjoy such Handel works as "L'Allegro..." and "Acis and Galatea," you will certainly enjoy "Alexander's Feast," which finds the composer in peak form, responding with eagerness to the high quality of the English verse before him. And it's hard to imagine a better way to get to know it than this wonderful performance.

I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.

Masterful!.......2005-06-15

This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07

I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Of the many accounts of Britten's Ceremony of Carols in the catalog, this one is the best. This was the first work Britten wrote for boys' voices, and with his keen ear and extraordinary imagination, he achieved many wondrous and memorable effects. At the heart of this 1986 performance are the boys of the Westminster Cathedral Choir, obviously a well-trained group. With their outstanding intonation and hearty sound, these London boys outclass all the competition. Their singing is free and expressive, yet very disciplined, even in the triple canon of "This Little Babe," which has a way of bringing all but the most skillful groups to grief. The playing of harpist Sioned Williams is especially accomplished--she delivers a superb realization of the solo interlude based on "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel"--and David Hill's direction is right on the mark. The recording, made in Westminster Cathedral, is spacious and extremely appealing, right down to the comings-and-goings of the procession and recession, both of which work beautifully. A fine sampling of Britten's other choral music, including the beautiful Missa Brevis in D, rounds out the disc. --Ted Libbey

I just purchased this CD, and the performance of Ceremony of Carols is absolutely ravishing.

I have to agree with other reviewers that this is the best version of "A Ceremony of Carols" available. The piercing purity of the treble solo voice on "Balulalow" brings tears to my eyes nearly every time I listen to it, and the quality of the rest of the album matches that performance.

These are exceedingly well-trained children; I often get a little concerned when a choir approaches "This Little Babe," but this choir tosses off the difficult challenge with an ease that lets me forget the notes and instead be shaken by the poetry of young boys singing a fierce war-cry about the hero Christ-child who, in his naked, infinitely vulnerable infancy, is humanity's shield against all hell.

This is not "pretty" music - yes, it's just boys and a harp - but it's powerful, lulling, agressive, disarming. I can't stop talking about this recording to my friends and family.

The best version of this piece!.......2000-09-23

This is the best version of the Ceremony of Carols available. It is sung completely by trebles and is accompanied only by harp, which is how it was written. Trebles = boys. I thought it was out of print and I am very happy to see that it is not. The only problem with this version is that it is very quiet, and needs to be turned up to double the usual volume, but it isn't a major problem. In case you're not familiar with this piece, it is a very beautiful set of carols written in old English (even though it was written in the 20th century). The songs are very complex, especially my favorite "This Little Babe" which has 3 sections of the choir singing the same lyrics a beat apart... very difficult, and very exciting. There is also the beautifully dissident "That Yonge Child", and practically everyone's favorite "Balulalow". The harp interlude is also very popular. I highly recommend this CD.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.
