The Shads' shoot for greatness...and succeed!.......2007-07-23
There probably won't be an album released in 2007 that is more highly anticipated, closely inspected, and strictly critiqued than Shadows Fall's new one, "Threads of Life." After selling over 300,000 copies of their last full-length (2004's "War Within"), this Massachusetts-based quintet followed in the tracks of Lamb of God and Mastodon by (finally!) jumping to a major label (this is their first release under Atlantic Records). Subsequently, the band teamed-up with a well-known producer (Nick Raskulinecz) who has worked with such pop groups as Velvet Revolver and the Foo Fighters. These things considered, this could have been just the thing that haters were waiting to scream "sell out" at.
So what are we to make of the new album? Well, here's the thing: It sounds slick. Extremely slick, in fact. Atlantic's big budget and production definitely shine through here, as evidenced by the muted rhythm guitars, crisp lead guitars, punchy drums, big choruses, and multi-tracked vocals that are as smooth as a baby's bottom. Thus, a lot of fans will be immediately turned off that it isn't as raw, intense, or edgy as, say, 1997's debut, "Somber Eyes To The Sky." But there are a couple of advantages of this huge production, including a thicker guitar tone, and hooks that are just spectacular. Thus, your first listen to "Threads of Life" will probably spent dwelling on how glossy it sounds, but after giving it a little time to digest, the album will soon reveal itself as the extremely contagious listen that it really is.
Every band member is at the top of his game here, and they turn out some of their best and most professional, phenomenal, and technical music to date. Paul Romanko is a solidified bassist, and he lays down some of his meatiest and most audible bass lines on this record, and Jason Bittner's drumming is as quick and forceful as ever. But there are really three star performers who take up most of the spotlight. The first of which is longtime frontman Brian Fair -- who proves he is much more than just a "vocalist" - he is an actual, honest-to-goodness singer! And a darn good one, too! Sure, he can still growl when he wants to, but he never sounds remotely one-dimensional or overly angry, because most of the time he opts to for a full-throated singing voice which shows off his warm, powerful pipes. The two other stars are Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand, who are doubtlessly one of modern metal's leading guitar duos. Their riffs are deliciously crunchy, their leads are deft and usually blazing fast (but never out of control), and their solos have gotten more technical and ripping, and now even occasionally border on being melodic.
The songwriting is superb as well. Shads released a great C.D. in 2002 named "The Art of Balance," but that title could have just as well applied to this album, too, because there is variety aplenty here. The result is a superbly exciting, meticulous, contagious, diverse, mature, rich, and well-textured sound. Plus, Brian Fair also chipped in by coming up with some of his smartest and most passionate and personal lyrics. "Threads of Life" has many terrifically memorable songs, and even if some are more so than others, there isn't a single stinker or filler to be found from front to back. In other words, heavy music doesn't get much more consistent, listenable, easy to digest, or flawless than this nowadays.
The propulsive "Redemption" hits the ground running with excellent, bullying guitar leads, a huge, wonderfully harmonic and infectious chorus that will have everybody in the crowd waving their lighters. "Burning The Lives" works similarly, with a forceful, streamlined chainsaw guitar attack opening the song before giving way to a "Dimebag" Darrell-worthy solo and an open, cleanly sung chorus. "Storm Winds" is the album's first semi-ballad, but not to worry: the fine singing, well-placed bits of guitar crunch, and terrific solo present here make this song another keeper. "Failure Of The Devout" begins with an acoustic intro that evokes Testament before rocketing into a river of blistering, chunked-up guitar shred.
Then, however, things start to get a little more experimental. Three of the next tracks, the hooky "Venomous," "Final Call" (which is highlighted by a grumbling bass line and one of Donais' best solos to date), and the especially hefty and chunky "Dead Uprising," are all muscular yet mid-tempo chug churners which slow down the record's pace significantly. You'll probably grow more and more uncertain as you make your way through surprising tracks like the ultra-melodic "Another Hero Lost," which will instinctively be thought of as a blatant stab at getting radio play. However, after dreamy, ambient acoustic strums, two cool guitar solos (one melodic, the other blazing), and Brian Fair's mindblowing singing voice and touching lyrics (inspired by Fair's cousin, who died while stationed in Iraq), are added to the mix, then "Another Hero Lost" turns out to be a great power ballad which any Eighties thrash band would be glad to call their own. Then comes "The Great Collapse," a gorgeous, piano-based interlude.
Two final songs round out the set, the first of which is one of the biggest highpoints on hand here. In addition to a guitar solo which will induce vertigo in some listeners, "Just Another Nightmare" boasts an awesome chorus composed of irresistibly sweet, sometimes almost even (dare I say it?) emo-ish crooning that stays in the listener's head for several days. Finally back on familiar ground, "Threads Of Life" ends the same way it began, with "Forevermore," which is an all-out onslaught of scorching riffage.
"Threads of Life" will surely be too mainstream for some fans (especially longtime followers), but fair-minded listeners will find absolutely nothing to dislike here. This is an epic, unquestionably excellent and completely satisfying album which is a frontrunning candidate for album of the year, and is one of the top thrash releases of the new millennium. It even has the potential to go down as of the genre's all time classics, and to say that Shadows Fall are now firing on all cylinders would be a gross understatement. Some would argue that The Shads' came close to but did not quite fully achieve true greatness with their first six full-length releases, but their should be little debate over that now, because "TOL" is the kind of stuff that legends are made of.
Shadows Fall - Threads of Life .......2007-07-17
After hearing some buzz about Shadows Fall, I decided to check them out. Their most recent album "Threads of Life" is the latest release from the band, so my review will lack the critical analysis that could be used to compare any progression or change they have had from albums in their past discography.
Songs I liked: Redemption is the opening track and is heavy and powerful, with a mix of thrash and repetitive style rock riffs in places. The songwriting is good and I liked the vocal efforts on this song, as well as most songs on the album. The track "Failure of the Devout" has some good changeups within the overall structure of the guitar parts. The track "Another Hero Lost" is one of my favorites and has some catchy riffs as well as definitive melodic guitars throughout. The drifting ballad "Final Call" is a nice change to throw into the mix of hard edged thrash and rock based tunes. The fact they do this shows a little bit of diversity and showcases the bands ability to at least do something different than spit out repeated riffs and angst style vocals, which is a habit many bands of this genre fall into. The track "Forevermore" is fast and furious with high speed guitars and vocals that hit home. The percussion on this song is a little more prevalent and does not take a back seat to any of the other instruments used.
Bottom Line: Normally I don't like to use other bands when comparing music or writing a review, however at times it can be very necessary because it is a better way of conveying a sound or style of music than trying to describe the sounds I hear and feel on the album. If you are looking for a more progressive or math metal style of music, these guys are probably not for you. If you like some of the thrash metal bands from the 1980s then you may find these guys to your liking. They are not Pantera or old Metallica, but the album itself is pretty tight, and although at times I felt there was a lot of repetition within the songs as a collective whole, there is enough strength here to grow, with room to improve. If you like to listen to anything from Disturbed to Dragonforce, you may find room for this album in your collection. This genre of music is heavily saturated right now with bands trying to make their mark, and I think Shadows Fall may have enough shredding and decent songwriting within them to carry on into the next decade. I realize they formed over ten years ago, and do have a strong overall fan base. Vocalist Brian Fair is particularly impressive here and with that said; I look forward to going back and listening to more music by this band.
LOVE IT.......2007-07-06
This Album is just awesome! Plain and simple. Riffs are awesome, solos are insane, and Brian Fair's vocals keep getting better. It's nice to hear a band that grows and stays true to themselves too.
Thrash and terror!.......2007-07-05
I am so glad to see that there are stil thrash bands in circulation. I like all of that norweigian black/deathy stuff...but thrash is my idea of great metal music. And here they are, a modern band doing an old thing with all of the much needed ingreidients to keep it original and personal. Shadows Fall is further proof that thrash is not just another metal trend, it's the timeless form of metal that will always come back to bite you just when you thought it was dead. I recommend this fine album to fans of Slayer, Exodus, and Burst.

Great and Mighty.......2007-06-27
I believe the title sums it all up. Loved 'Great and Mighty', best track on there by far, followed by 'Celebrate'.
Sing it Smokie!!!!!.......2007-06-13
Off the bat, this brother can sing, he is in full control of his vocals, sometimes smooth and sometime soaring, but he can deliver nonetheless, the awesome standout track "Ummm Good" is a fine praise & worship experience, that will leave you wanting to praise more. The cd opener is the upbeat "Celebrate" another great praise song. Great & Mighty a mid-tempo cut has an slight island feel to it with a bop your head ,tap your feet vibe. Smokie shines on 2 other tracks "In time" & More than anything, nice background arrangements as well. Another gem, the Whitney Houston remake "Run to you" is mesmerizing and definitely a far better renditon by Smokie, not only is it from a male point of view, but it's about the Lord, it doesn't get any better than that! The only low points on this cd is that there are mostly slow tempo songs, but if that's whatcha like, this is the cd for you...I enjoyed it as well.

Its not Black Waterpark, but very good.......2007-07-23
I don't know if it is possible to crank out another BWP, but this album is still worthy of 5 stars. This is right in line with Opeth's other dark albums. This band is one of the most talented bands out there, when speaking with regards to instrument playing; would rather see them stop the demonic screaming and just focus on the singing.
Another enthralling work of art........2007-07-13
Still Life, like basically any other Opeth album, is a testament to this band's brilliance. This was their fourth album, and marked a few noticeable changes in Opeth's sound. First, Mikael's growl deepened considerably on this release, and it sounds more proggy than the releases prior to this one. It's also their first album with bassist Martin Mendez. This is also the first Opeth album to feature songs that cross the 10-minute mark and beyond since Morningrise.
Still Life, as most people know by now, is about a man sent away from his village. 15 years later, he returns to find his lover, Melinda. He watches her from afar, afraid of being seen by the other villagers, fearing for Melinda's saftey and his own. Eventually, he meets her, and tries to convince her to come with him. But the Council of the Cross, the people who banned him from his village, as well as the people who are in charge of it, slit Melinda's throat. In his rage, he slaughters the people who took part in murdering her, until he is burned at the cross, and sees Melinda waiting for him in the next life, with open arms. Even though this story is ficticious, I could really see it as something that probably happened a lot in the midevil days. There is more to the store than that, but that's the just of it.
In constrast to My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life is softer, and contains more acoustic passages. Like I said before, it also marks the point where they veered from being a spacey, atmospheric band to a more stable, progressive oriented band (not that there's anything wrong with either style). The style of the album still follows the Opeth formula: long, atmospheric inquisitions that makes transitions between brutal (yet still proggy) death metal and quiet, acoustic folk/prog music. But this is the style that we've all come to love and expect from Opeth, so no criticism is called for here! Mikael has awesome guitar solos here with extreme complexity (without sounding too indulgent). Peter provides great rythm guitar riffs that give Opeth their amazing atmospheres. Martin Lopez makes great transitions between maniacal double-bass pounding and soft tapping of the drums. Martin Mendez, as always, is buried behind the rest of the band for the majority of the time, unfortunately. So I can't say much about him, other than the fact that he sounds great whenever he's audible.
My favorites off Still Life are: The opening track, The Moor. This song is about when he returns to his village, expressing his hatred for everyone in his former village except Melinda. Mike's clean voice sounds very haunting on this song, and I get chills everytime I hear it. Godhead's Lament. It's one of the heaviest off the album. GL is when the man is marveling at Melinda from a hiding place, seeing that she's been taken in and brainwashed by the Council of the Cross. He also decides to stay in an attempt to get her back ("What woould they care if I did stay. No one would know, oh-ho"... I love that part!). Great melodies are present on this song, and Mike has a great solo. And finally, Moonlapse Vertigo, which is possibly my favorite track here. Mike sounds like a stray puppy on this song, especially during the part where he sings "I would persih at the given signal at the slightest touch from my soul tainted prophet in flesh for all the plagued and lost." In this song, the outcast reminds himself that he'd be killed if the Council saw him. This is also the point where he decides to meet Melinda and take her with him.
Unfortunately, this album was neglected in the States, because awful trends like Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys were polluting the airwaves. No one wanted to dig beneath the surface and find the artworks that Opeth have made and are still making. And while they have gained more recognition in the U.S. (and everywhere, really), they still haven't gotten the success that so rightfully deserve. Metal is a highly discriminated genre. A shame too, since there are many talented metal bands out there with immense sophsitication, such as Opeth.
I don't think Morningrise will ever be kicked out of my spot for "favorite Opeth album," but I've come to love this album so much that it has dethroned Orchid as my 2nd favorite Opeth CD. Although, in all truth, I listen to the entire Opeth catalogue and find each album to be a classic, at the risk of sounding like a fanboy. But Still Life, like all of this amazing band's albums, is a spellbinding masterpiece that deserves multiple listens by everyone on the planet, if only people would give it a chance. But hey, maybe all that popularity would corrupt Opeth ;).
Artistic, Thought Provoking, Inspirational.......2007-06-17
I can't say enough about this great band. Still Life is a wonderful concept album that grabs you from the beginning and never lets go. Proggers, go out of your way to hear this band. This band is a must for all progressive fans. Absolute brilliance!
Still Life is a must for anybody who likes Opeth.......2007-05-07
One thing I have noticed over the years is that Opeth always makes great music, and Still Life is a perfect example of that. It is definitely one of my favorite albums. If you are new to listening to metal, Still Life is an excellent start. This album proves just how talented Opeth is compared to a lot of other metal bands.
Have I Told You Lately..........2007-03-16
I love this band. Everything Opeth puts out into this world is original and great. They are awesome in concert, too.
Kind reader of this review: If you buy only one CD by Opeth, let it be Still Life. Every song is a chapter in a story. Imagine, a story being told to you in a voice which you find dually lulling and frightening. Imagine music playing--music harsh and gentle. You see a woman, there, up ahead. She's standing at the edge of a dark forest. The first things you notice about her is a pale face, black hair, and you take notice that she's dressed in old time garb (maybe gothic wear?). She stands as a woman saddened by something which is unknown to you--a pain which you'll never understand. Can you save her? Would you put your life down for her salvation? Would you dare to love Melinda?

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21
Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.
A classic compilation.......2006-10-07
This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)
This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)
A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)
For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.
A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01
Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.
The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.
This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.
This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.
Unique .......2004-10-19
I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.
Great set.......2001-10-16
I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.
I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!
I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.
Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

Playwright Tony Kushner adapted his sprawling meditation on the AIDS epidemic of the 80's into an equally epic, Mike Nichols-directed HBO miniseries. But while Thomas Newman's score spans that dramatic landscape with rich stylistic diversity, the young champion of the daunting Newman family musical tradition (his father was Fox legend Alfred; his brother fellow film scorer David; his cousin songwriter/composer Randy) never lets musical bombast get in the way of compelling emotional introspection. Anchored by a delicate wind and string-driven main theme that's as mature as it is bittersweet, Newman proceeds to explore some of the same adventurous, rhythmically restless soundscapes that characterized his work on Erin Brockovich and American Beauty. But that typically moody experimentalism is leavened elsewhere by moments of neo-baroque choral exultation, smokey 30's jazz (courtesy of George Lewis and his Ragtime Band and Duke Ellington) and even flashes of gospel and orchestral post-modernism, all of it served up with a masterful sense of irony-free restraint that's become one of the composer's most refreshing hallmarks. It's easily one of Newman's -- and 2003's -- most accomplished and satisfying film scores. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Some of his best work.......2007-06-12
Most of us know Thomas Newman for his work on his more famous films like American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, Scent of a Woman and Meet Joe Black, but this soundtrack to the HBO film is right up there with his best pieces of work. The whole album goes through various feelings, shades and emotions, the best tracks for me being Mauve Antarctica and Tropopause. If you're a Thomas Newman fan then you need this in your collection.
Angels in America - Always Great!.......2007-01-03
Love the film, the play and the soundtrack. If you find the topics of Angels in America interesting, thought-provoking and warm to your heart, you will LOVE this. As a man battling HIV, I find it outstanding. Thanks Amazon, for offering all the Angels in America products.
GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-01
There are not enough stars on the selection for me to say how good this CD is! It is so beautiful and like classical music. I listen to it all the time!
The Celestial Xpression of Thomas Newman.......2005-08-31
...well, to only write a review is not enough to describe the impressive sound in this record. it is necessary to listen to it. Thomas do not scrimp in efforts to assemble this wonderful musical work. in fact, each one of the melodys, agreed, and instruments (mainly those of wind and strings) even are perfectly connected and performed in litle some more of 70 minutes of music. Transitions from the quietness of a melody to the loudest human chorus, may be hear is this soundtrack (tipically from the original Serie, that I have too in DVD). But everything is not perfect. Must be had included the Henry Mancini song: "Moon River" contained in one of the most sentimental scenes in the film/serie (that i think at least). In a plus, if you are an lover of this kind of productions, it does not have to lack in its collection the "Angels in America Soundtrack". Buy and enjoy it..!
Amazing work.......2004-11-28
After working in film scoring for the past decade, Thomas Newman has finally achieved his masterwork with the soundtrack to "Angels in America." It is a culmination of the different techniques and themes he has worked on in the past, along with a completely new orchestral sound that perfectly underlies the depth and scope of the film. It is a very rare score in that it conveys all the happiness, pain, pessimism and hope that Kushner's work is all about, simply through the nuanced way Newman has written and arranged it. It is an incredibly entertaining score that stands well on its own. A must for any fans of Newman or the film.

`Winans', `Hawkins' and `Crouch' are like brand names.......2006-10-12
`Winans', `Hawkins' and `Crouch' are like brand names - with gospel heritage and guaranteed quality attached to whatever they produce. And Vickie Winans is as seasoned a singer and minister as the more popular Winans or BeBe and CeCe. W2WSoL is a double CD (1½ studio, ½ live) appearing to be aimed at a wide Christian audience; the artwork oozes class with Mrs Winans in a Cinderella frock unsuitable for rush-hour commuting! More importantly there's a range of music styles so there's something for everyone, so to speak.
Positives; CD1 carries the product. `Madly In Love', `God Of Comfort', `Watch The Wind' stand out. The best track is `Dance With Me' - stick it on repeat and eat motorway miles (or freeway kilometers) with a smile.
Negatives; two tributes to mom on one CD! Great for mom but not for us. I don't think that `Go Go Praise' goes with the flow of the album. Also there's no real need to hear another rendition of `Joyful Joyful' or `Jesus Loves Me'.
Double albums face the challenge of maintaining a high level of quality and cohesion for twice as many tracks. I'm not sure W2WSoL does so; the songs do not sit well together as it aims to satisfy seasoned gospel heads and contemporary Christian followers together. W2WSoL is a bit of a pick'n'mix - fine as a whole but most will find themselves pressing the `skip' button to head for their favourite tracks.
Welcome Back, Lady!!.......2006-08-24
Vickie Winans has returned to the forefront in a marvelous way! A double cd packed with soulful, jazzy, heartfelt tunes that makes a listener want to pull the car to the side of the road, as I did to thank the Lord for blessing me throughout my life. I can already envision many in the traditional gospel community being conflicted about this project because there is little that would lead you to an overall churchy feel. And while I can appreciate that sentiment, I am certainly not disappointed in Vickie's effort right about now in the least. Mario's tribute to his mom with 30 reasons, literally had me in tears. I can only hope that my son can see the same in me! The only thing that left me with a question of "why" was her photo collage insert. Vickie is by no doubt a beautiful sister, as is her mother but I didn't quite understand the necessity of such.
You Go Vickie.......2006-08-21
I just picked up this one mainly because I love "It's Alright". I didnt much like the video though when I saw it. It featured a marching band which I understood the concept since the song has a very heavy drum/bassline to it. But I did wonder where the direction towards God was. If you listen to the song...God is there, dont know why she left Him out of the video though. But, then again it seems like a lot of Gospel artists are doing this in their videos. Overall, I loved the album. It was 100 times better than her last effort. I had a problem with that one since it was about 50 remixes of about 5 songs. This one is a double CD and has something for everyone. It has upbeat tempos for those who love the R&B sound, some with Jazzy tempos (which I loved), some with slower more churchy like feels. I believe it is a very good CD. I was quite frankly surprised that I would like it this much...especially after the last one. Glad I stepped out on faith and got it.

didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22
I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.
Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20
If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.
Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.
It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22
My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.
"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.
All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!
a lost gem.......2004-10-14
i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.
Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19
BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

CD's A Classic.......2007-03-23
And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. People weren't prepared for this street gem from the Bad Boy camp and expected something a little more mainstream from the Puffster. Instead Rob and camp hit folks over the head with some real tough music. The 4 1/2 mics in the source got my attention then, and looking back it's deserved. One of the best storytellers ever and most underrated, this CD is a gem from Bacardi Rob and the Bad Boy camp.
Black Rob threw Bad Boy on his back like WHOA!.......2006-09-23
Rob came with that old school vibe on this with remarkable storytelling skills reminiscent of Biggie and Slick Rick. After Mase retired and the Lox bounced to go to the then red hot Ruff Ryders, Puff, BR, and the Hitmen came through with this classic. Standout cuts are Can I Live(with the Lox), WHOA( of course), I love you baby, PD World Tour, Espacio and Jasmine.
Whoa!!!!.......2005-11-28
Dont buy this get the single the only other hot song to me is already on Puffs CD. I mean its not garbage but its a little boring? Maybe its just I cant get into his music.
IT'S " i " IGHT NOT REALLY ALL THAT, JUST CANT GET IN TO THIS MC!!.......2005-11-22
3 STARS TO ME IS FAIR ENUFF.
Good solo for B.R........2005-10-23
Black Rob delivers a solid 15 song solo debut. About equal with his long awaited 2nd album, maybe slightly better. Of the 15 songs on here, 2 are classics, 1 is a near classic, 2 I skip, 2 are ok, the rest are good. Guests are on about half of the songs but BR still gets his chance to shine on the mic. Production is pretty good as well, from many different producers. Nysheim Myrick, Yogi Graham, Mario Winans, D-Dot all do 2 songs, Younglord, Buckwild, Joe Hooker, Puff Daddy, Charlemagne, Amen Ra and Carlos Braody all do 1 song. For fans of Black this is a nice album to have.
