Sly & The Family Stone might have psychedelicized soul music, but Marvin Gaye personalized it. Although the powers-that-were Motown didn't even want to release the record, the unexpected success of What's Going On, issued in 1971, inspired Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and just about every other black artist on the planet to take greater responsibility for their music and its meaning. Gaye co-wrote the songs and produced the album, flavoring it with layer upon layer of his own multi-tracked vocals, oceans of hand percussion, strings, flutes, and jazzy horn solos. Spacey and loose as a spliff-fueled Sunday afternoon jam in the park, the nine songs all played like a hit single. The title track--inspired by his brother's return from the Vietnam War--and the obvious social commentary of "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" and "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" actually were hit singles. Two other tracks ("Wholly Holy" and "Save the Children") would inspire hit covers by Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, respectively. Nevertheless, What's Going On sounds as fresh today as it did the week that it came out. Recommended reading: Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye by David Ritz (McGraw-Hill, 1985). --Don Waller

5 out of 5 stars gifted singer.......2007-07-23

Our world lost so much when we lost Marvin Gaye. Such a beautiful voice. His songs touched your heart and mean as much today as they did years ago. He will truly be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless ,elegant, Soulful.......2007-07-08

You must own this album. It changed music. It chronicles a era.It never sound old or dated .It was elegant, sexy ,topical & remains that way after all these years.
Its one of the greatest albums ever made !

5 out of 5 stars A Top Ten.......2007-06-10

With the release of "What's Going On" in 1971, Marvin Gaye ignited the social consciousness movement in music. With a senseless war in Vietnam, and racism still prominent in America. Pollution of our water and the air we breath. And Black unemployment levels continuously rising, Marvin hit a spot that had been sorely lacking in music, with the exception of maybe Curtis Mayfield. But he did it with a spiritual solution, "God Is Love" Wholy Holy".

It was America's time to stop and finally ask the question, what is going on? And now with another war raging in the Middle East, the question is still relevant. And still Marvin's spiritual answers remain the only hope for this world. A thought provoking operatic flow resulting in Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, and most redeeming effort.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever in any genre........2007-04-02

Always in the upper echelons of the greatest LP's of all time lists, and deservedly so.

One of the few benefits of getting old(er) is the historical perspective that comes with the privilege. For instance, it is one thing to read that this record was, in its time, unique - that it was the very first of its time - a full length soul album dealing with social issues. Curtis had, if I recall correctly, released a couple of great singles. But there was no album. However, when What's Going on was released it was a revelation and a revolution, and to think that Marvin had to fight Motown in order to get it done! Over the last forty-seven year there are many special moments that I recall as special. Obviously the first time I heard the Beatles stands out. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Clapton, Jimi, the electrified Dylan on Like a Rolling Stone, Pet Sounds, Pepper, Kind of Blue, Led Zeppelin, In Utero and Thriller - milestones all. What's Going on belongs with these as a moment of great importance in the history of popular music. Remember, this was 1971. Less than a decade earlier popular R&B consisted of Stubborn Kind of Fellow and I'll be Doggone. Fabulous songs but miles away from the brilliant relevance of the title track, Mercy Mercy me, Inner City Blues, Right on or Flying High. What's Going on constitutes a 90 degree turn for Marvin and for popular urban black music. If you are reading this you do not need me to describe the music! Two years later Marvin released Let's Get it on. That's another story.

4 out of 5 stars It's Gone on For Way Too Long.......2007-03-07

In my opinion this ranks as one of the most overrated recordings in the history of popular music. Sure, it's plenty good...and made a big impact at the time of its release. But, there are several weak songs, and it has not aged particularly well. I can think of a dozen soul records that deserve greater accolades: Prince's "Sign of the Times," The Isley Brothers' "Brother, Brother, Brother," three records by Stevie Wonder, a few by James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin...and others. Keep an open mind and look beyond what is "pushed upon you on the street" Right on!

This big rock candy mountain of an album justifies some if by no means all of the poses and pretentious statements made by Manchester's natural-born rock & roll deities. A dramatic attempt to rekindle the flames of the original British Invasion, Morning Glory rolls 30 years of Britpop tradition into one irresistible (if achingly self-conscious) whole. "Wonderwall" can be read as a Beatles tribute, "Don't Look Back in Anger" feels like a Mott The Hoople anthem and "She's Electric" and "Morning Glory" are chewy pop confections. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Oasis best.......2007-07-19

In my opinion this is one of the best albums of the mid 90's. Songs such as wonderwall, don't look back in anger, and she's eletric are some of the coolest songs on this album. Highly reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars A classic album with a lot of great tracks on it.......2007-06-27

Definitely as good as it ever got with Oasis. Wonderwall is still a radio standard and this album has plenty of songs that come close to that kind of greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2007-06-02

Oasis is a superb band, and while they did enjoy moderate success in the United States with "Wonderwall" and a few other tunes, their popularity in the UK is immensely greater (in fact, this album itself is the number two selling album of all time in the UK, second only to The Beatles). And it is truly unfortunate that they never reached this level of success in America. Oasis could have been much more, and if time hadn't been wasted brawling and drinking, I believe these Brits could have even surpassed Nirvana in popularity in the States. A bold statement, I know, but just give this immaculate album a listen. (What's The Story) Morning Glory? is definitely one of the best albums of the nineties and possibly one of the best of all time.

It is apparent that the lads of Oasis have put alot into every track. There is not one weak song on the album. Albeit it really isn't the most original stuff out there (the songs of The Beatles, T. Rex, etc. all come to mind when listening), but it is by far some of the most satisfying and enjoyable Britpop out there. The UK has always been a haven for excellent rock bands...Pink Floyd, Led Zep, The Who, The Clash...and with this album, Oasis can now be listed among those. Leading the wave of British rockers in the 90's, now looking back it is apparent that these guys were a blessing, the complete opposite of the grunge and lame pop dominating the airwaves in those days.

On to the songs themselves, "Wonderwall", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Cast No Shadow", and "Champagne Supernova" are all instantly recognizable as some of the most popular hits found on here. However, throughout there are many more gems. "Hello", which leads us off, is by far one of the rougher songs on this overall softer (for Oasis, at least) CD, more reminiscent of Definitely Maybe, and is a great way to lead things off. In the same vein as "Hello" lies "Morning Glory", a fantastic song with an incredibly catchy guitar riff. One of the most underrated songs on here, with clever lyrics and a unique rhythm is "She's Electric". Everything on here deserves a listen, as everything is just as good as the next.

Overall, a must-have for those who wish to return to the good old days of rock and roll. This album is certainly a piece of the progression of Oasis, but musically it harks back to the days when an the entire album was true music, no filler included. A superb CD.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, gut-wrenching, awful.......2007-06-02

Good god, if there is the worst, pointless band ever, it would be Oasis.

Oasis's music is boring, unoriginal, and pointless. After listening to the totally deritave, ________ rock, it's a wonder why Lame Gallagher and his _________ brother Noel think they are the best band ever. NOt even close, not even close. Hey Now! Is a ___________ attempt at a ballad, and with Lame's shreiking, piercing, whiny voice on the top is like listening to the sounds of a fire over a screaming person trapped in the fire.

Speaking of __________ singing, Lame Gallagher's annoying voice shoots down ANY chance of making Morning Glory?. IT's bad enough that his attitude is laughable, but his ridicolous image on stage only covers up how much of a __________ singer he is. It's an insult to Johnny Rotten when he described his voice of being a mix between a Beatles member and the legendary Sex Pistols singer. His lyrics aren't original, so the chance he has of becoming a good singer shoots himself down.

And finally, the atnics of Lame and Noel makes Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst seem like a saint. The brothers attack George Harrison, Phil Collins, yet those singers do their own things and don't suck. The fighting and ridicolous atnics that are nothing but laughable, immature, _____ to rational people.

Don't believe the hype. There is nothing redeeming about Oasis. Try the Beatles instead (no __________ duh!)

5 out of 5 stars They're perfect. Just don't get to know them!.......2007-05-16

There's a hackneyed saying, "Time will tell." But cliches are often cliches for a reason. There's truth to them. Case in point, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" I just listened to it for the first time in ten years, and, well, I love it, all over again. How many albums can you say that about? Certainly not Born in the USA.

What makes this album so great? Simple. Every song is good. Some, like the micro epic closer, Champagne Supernova, are classic. I just wish the jamming guitar solo would go on for another 10 minutes, but that's okay. And if maybe some of the other songs took off in that balls-to-the-wall sort of way. No? That's okay, too.

The only song I'd skip is one of their most popular, Wonderwall. I don't know. It just feels droany and whiny. But it's still good. That's what this album is all about (even that song that's just a clip of a jam is worth it). It's like they could do nothing wrong. If only they stayed that way. Oh well.

Just a warning. Don't ever, I mean ever, listen to an interview with them. Promise? Seriously. It's like if you were into Lenny Kravitz and all of a sudden heard him say that he enjoys clubbing Harp Seals and strangling kittens. That's why I try not to read tell-all biographies. If someone's an artist, just let their art speak for them. Not their misguided words.

Most of all, sit back and enjoy the Brit invasion album in 30 years. And no, they're not better than the Beatles. Just a little different. And a lot more obnoxious.

Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels great and small argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults--a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady." Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter-egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively; the stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters; and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks.

Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that many of the rarities here have already been repurposed by shrewd mixers, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form. A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mm-hmm! I can smell that funky music!.......2007-06-18

Rare indeed; I can't imagine where you would find original 45s or even LPs containing all of these songs. That would be one lifetime task. The good folks at Rhino Records with their remarkable and creative tastes took out all of that hassle for us and now offers a rather unique set of rare funky music from the vaults of Atlantic/Atco and Warner/Reprise dating 1967-1977 with 91 tracks spanning across 4 filled-to-the-brim discs. Any soul music fan will no doubt want to explore this area of the R&B category (funk and I mean pure funk), but at times the flow of the music could seem a bit too much to handle. Some of the cuts go more than 3 1/2 minutes and sound like they might not end any time soon. The other case would be some tracks sound bizarre or unusual in terms of sound due to instrumentation, arrangements, etc. Such "bizarre" tracks are the sitar-laced rendition of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Steppin' Stones" with a crazed flautist leading the way on a very blazing and dizzy-sounding track. The good outweigh the not-so-good remarkably, though. So get ready to hear punchy horns, infectious, simplistic and driving drumbeats, super funky bass lines, crunchy guitars, oozing organs and ultra-soulful vocals. On disc one, some noteworthy tracks are "Spreadin' Honey", "Get Otta My Life Woman", "Snatchin' It Back", "Sexy Coffee Pot" and "Help Me Make Up My Mind" (an answer to "Can I Chane My Mind"). Be sure to check out "Sookie Sookie", "Feelin' Alright" (done by Lulu (To Sir With Love)!), and "Engine Number Nine" on disc two, "Face It" (love the female backup singers on this), "Wah Wah Man", an alternate extended mix of "Rock Steady", "Suavecito", and "Nuki Suki" (from Little Richard) on disc three as well as "Moon Shadow", "Kissing My Love", "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky", "Chug Chug-A-Lug", "Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away", and "Chicken Heads" on disc four. Those were just some of my favorite tracks, so I may have missed some. Many are instrumentals, but there are a handful with vocalists singing about love, dancing, partying, social concerns, etc. Bottom line: worth checking out and worth the discovery. You definitely won't hear this stuff on commercial radio. Only about three or four songs you'll recognize; the rest is like a surprise. If you're into R&B and want to explore the funk side of it, you can't find a better pick, and about 90% of these songs aren't available (some or many) together anyplace else. The real deal of funk; that is "what it is!"

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IT IS ?.....NOTHING BUT A NON STOP PARTY! .......2007-02-10

This set right here could very well be the holy grail of rare and hard to find grooves. This box set is funkier than a high school locker room! Every track on here is certified stank(aka funky). The most amazing thing about these tracks is that they capture the spirit of the times better than a lot of their more popular comtemporaries(at least in my opinion). "What it is" feels like an audio documentary of underdogs making the funkiest music and having a great time doing it. If you listen to how these tracks are sequenced, you'll feel like a story is being told - rather than just listening to another compliamation of vintage r&b music.

I'm only 25 years old. Every time I play this set, I feel like I'm at a 70's block party, chillin' in a long black cadillac fleetwood and scoping out some foxy mamas with hot pants and thigh high leather boots
(that's how good the music sounds). With 20 plus tracks each per disc, you can't help but be amazed with the consistent quality of the music.

All I gotta say is buy this set and let the funk be your guide to love, happiness, and your rites of passage to throw it on down and dance your
a-- off!!! If you ain't diggin on this, you're diggin a hole for yourself!

Long live the funk baby!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Mind blowing. Worth every penny. And so on........2007-02-04

This is the real deal folks. Music with grit and soul and feeling, before the shining distraction of drum machines, computers, samplers, bling, and "MTV's Cribs". I saw an ad for this and went to several book and record stores such as Borders, and to my local hip indie CD store (headquarters to the local music scene circle-jerk), trying to describe it to various clerks. Which was about like trying to teach a card trick to a basset hound. Save yourself the agony of trying to interest a white twenty-something body-piercing pincushion in ordering this set for you, and just get it here. You'll be glad you did. The sheer quantity of great music on this is staggering. I love the mix of instruments with vocal tracks, and the mix of "name" artists like Aretha or The Meters with many very obscure ones. Whoever compiled this did a great job in selecting the track order, so it makes it perfect for a long party. Everyone will be getting up and shaking their groove thang. This is priceless music from a lost era, so grab it before it disappears again.

4 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment.......2007-01-28

I am a funk fan who is still by all means learning...With the passing of James Brown recently, I have tried to speed up this process a little and take as much in as possible. I think this collection of "underground" funk is phenomenal, 4 discs and never a dull moment.

4 out of 5 stars Soul-tastic... All Hail Rhino! Nobody knows box like Rhino knows box.......2007-01-14

I stumbled over this set just a few days ago, and I have to say that it's easily one of the top 10 best random-artist compilations I've ever heard in my life, and I own hundreds of them.

I won't say there's no filler--by filler I mean the cover tunes--and I'm confused as to why "What So Never The Dance" is credited to the Houseguests when this is a longtime Bootsy Collins track? What, is Bootsy in trouble with Warner Brothers and can't re-release his own stuff under his own name anymore?

But disc one is an absolute gem--you can't make your own mix better than they've done it here. If you're a fan of James Brown, Parliament, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, the aforementioned Bootsy, Tower Of Power, Prince, early Stevie Wonder, Motown, Isaac Hayes, then you shouldn't be without this set.

Absolutely worth buying.

From Amazon.co.uk

Hot on the heels of their shock UK No. 1 single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not confirms Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys as the UK underground's most proselytizing young preachers of the DIY gospel. Marrying nervy, caffeine-and-cigarettes indie clatter to conversational, pretense-free lyrics and the occasional burst of off-the-cuff eloquence ("No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets," proffers "Dancefloor"), it's an instant, pulse-racing hit.

No question, the Monkeys are more sinners than saints. The opening "The View from the Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van," a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station wagon. Look beyond the Arctics' bristly, laddish exterior, however, because it's actually affairs of the heart that comprise this album's secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes," bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum"--a tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs ("I've seen your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun"), is tinted with sweet affection. --Louis Pattison

Album Description

Musically, there are bits of The Stone Roses, "What's The Story Morning Glory", and "Nevermind". As catchy as those reference points are, it's the songwriting that has won the band a fiercely dedicated following; a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and "Ghost Town" era Specials. Two #1 UK singles. Press already lined up with Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and Interview, to name a few. Three more US/Canadian tours planned for this year, including headlining Domino's label showcase at SXSW.

3 out of 5 stars Perfectly decent........2007-07-17

Not a bad record, but nothing compared to slur-punk contemporaries, The Libertines. I find it funny how often people cite their lyrics as the selling point of the band, so "fresh", "witty" and "insightful." Frankly, I didn't hear anything the Velvet Underground hadn't already said. Let's hope Alex Turner takes up heroin; he might end up half the musician Pete Doherty is.

5 out of 5 stars A great fresh sound!.......2007-07-05

They are not that popular in the US yet, but are huge over in Europe. If you listen to 2 of their songs you will be hooked. Its a new kind of sound and a breath of fresh air from a lot of the crap music now-a-days. I would recommend this CD to anyone who like music!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-26

This is an excellent catchy CD that rock and rolls pretty well. My favorite tracks are "Red light indicates doors are secure" and "marty bum" Also check out "The Redwalls" first CD "Universal Blues" if you liked this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy.......2007-06-09

If you like big names from the UK, no one's bigger. It doesn't live up to the hype completely, but it's catchy and entertaining. I find myself singing along with it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Liked it.......2007-06-08

For once, a band that got a lot of hype actually is worthy of the praise.

Album Description

Depending on who's counting, there are anywhere from 100 to n-frigging-thousand subgenres of rock music a band can slide into for easy categorization. And depending on where you drop the laser on Fair to Midland's debut album, Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True, at least half of those subgenres are being reinvented at once. But to call this Dallas quintet merely eclectic is to sell them way short. No, Fair to Midland are masters of fusing those subgenres into something that's cohesive, intensely focused, and in a bold new category all its own.

Recorded with art-rock super-producer David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, Peter Gabriel), Fables From a Mayfly finds Fair to Midland stretching out even further into the aggression and atmospherics at their core while taking their inherent gift for melody to new levels. Tracks such as "Kyla Cries Cologne," "April Fools and Eggmen," and the gripping first single, "Dance of the Manatee", showcase Fair to Midland's flair for combining progged-out virtuosity with lead-heavy riffs, dynamic tidal waves, and frontman Darroh Sudderth's operatic vocals. Even when the volume lets up--as in the softer, spacier folds of "The Wife, The Kids, and the White Picket Fence" and "Say When"--Fair to Midland create sonic tidal waves big enough to level arenas.

With Fables From a Mayfly, Fair to Midland have truly delivered, capturing the kinetic energy of their live show while harnessing the array of influences that make them impossible to pigeonhole. "For the most part, our musical tastes are completely different," says Sudderth, who rounds out the band with guitarist Cliff Campbell, drummer Brett Stowers, bassist Jon Dicken, and keyboardist/electronics manipulator Matt Langley. "We've just gotten better at listening to each other over the years. All of our songs are just us trying to find a happy medium between what everyone in the band listens to--and I think that actually being able to do that is what makes us so different from a lot of other `rock' bands today."

5 out of 5 stars Another Tomorrow Fills Up My Front Window.......2007-07-21

Every so often a band comes along that just completely blows your mind. Fair to Midland is one of those bands. Every song on Fables From a Mayfly is simply amazing. The lyrics are no less than pure poetry. The combination of lead vocalist Darroh Sudderth's throaty growling and amazing singing, along with the talents of each of the other band members (Cliff, John, Matt, and Brett) form what I can only describe as a work of art. The band revisit some of the songs from they're second album, inter.funda.stifle, and while they are the same, they are also different. Each of them sounds more refined and filled-out. "Dance of the Manatee," which is probably they're most well-known track, has been transformed into a pulverizing, yet strangely brilliant tune. The biggest surprise (and my favorite track) comes from the bands first album, The Carbon Copy Silver Lining. "A Wolf Descends Upon the Spanish Sahara" is fan-freakin-tastic. Every time I hear this song it sends chills up my spine. My recommendation: BUY THIS ALBUM. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Fair to Midland's Dance of the Manatee ...........2007-07-19

Fair to Midland - Dance of the Manatee is a excellently crafted song. Singer Darroh Sudderth's voice is very powerful through out the song. His singing style is very unique and very catchy to anyones ear.
The whole album proves to be a wonderious treat to try. The lyrics and the music provides endless minutes of listening pleasure and the artwork on the album is strangly beautiful and reminds me of old circus style drawings and pictures.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Beakout.......2007-07-15

I heard these guys on the radio not long before the album came out and I immediately loved it. I listen to a variety of rock, classic rock, metal, prog etc. and found it to be refreshing. It's one of those cds where you can listen to it all the whole way through. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars repetitive.......2007-07-14

I saw them live when they opened for As I Lay Dying at the Chameleon in Lancaster. Everyone in the pit stopped moshing and held up the thumbs down singn so they could see it. All the vocals sound the same, and when he does his hardcore voice i can't help but laugh at his miserable attempts. Every chorus, verse, breakdown, and stupid keyboard thing sounds the same. Dance of the Manatee is their only good song, and even that song is pretty weak. They're awful live, and the producer of the album must have done so much tuning to their recordings to even get them to the unimpressive point they are at now. Don't buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Fair to Midland Proves they are the Best Up-and-coming Band this Year.......2007-07-06

Here's the quickie: Fair to Midland's "Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True" is a wonderful display of eclectic songs styles, haunting vocals and clever lyrics. You'll find it has a hard time leaving your CD player.

Now for the more in depth review. This release is the band's first major label debut. What does that mean for the sound? Well, you won't need to guess, when you can compare, since six of the tracks are re-released from their previous independent "Inter.Funda.Stifle." With a bigger budget, the band comes across as more polished and definitive.

They handle the heavy tracks like "Dance of the Manatee" with a practiced flurry, and lead us into slower-paced yet just as hauntingly powerful tunes, like "Say When", with an ease that is due in no small way to the vocalist, Darroh Sudderth, who shows with every syllable sung just how amazing of a range he has. The song that showcases his voice like no other would be "The Wolf Descends upon the Spanish Sahara," with his melodic wail sounding the best that it ever has.

Finally, too, is there a member of the band whose duties are labeled as "keys", and who is actually one the most integral parts of the band itself! Matt Langley's skilled sounds help give this band what so many others are missing. Cliff Cambell's guitar is nice and varied, and balanced well with Jon Dicken's bass lines that never get boring. Brett Stower's definitely shows off what drums can do for the music, as heard in "Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes." Also, the band has done well to add little bits of extra layers in between the songs that makes multiple play-throughs interesting!

The improved quality and the updated songs show us not only how far Fair to Midland has come, but their potential for future growth. The new songs on this album are as good as any they've done thus far. One would be hard pressed to find a definitive genre for this band; finally, an upcoming band with a sound all its own. "Fable's From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True" is the best album of the year so far, and well worth the purchase.

Very good quality reproduction, and enjoyable to listen to the full length movie soundtrack again.

4 out of 5 stars MacRae and Jones head a superb and O.K. adaptation.......2007-03-16

The film adaptation of Oklahoma heralded a technological breakthrough in widescreen cinema just as the original stage musical ushered in the integrated book musical. As such this film adaptation was treated as a special occasion, well-supervised by the creators themselves. The soundtrack, featured here, boasts sterling performances from MacRae and Jones making the most of their portrayals of Curly and Laurey, backed by a charismatic cast and superb orchestrations. And of course let's not forget the enveloping stereo sound that holds up well even today.

Despite being a Hollywood star, Gordon MacRae performs the part of Curly as if he was born to play it even on the stage. He shines vocally in his renditions of Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin' and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones as a fresh and pert Laurey, lending her beautiful voice to the part. Although we don't hear much of her on this soundtrack, her partnering MacRae in People Will Say We're in Love exudes a masterful chemistry, as if they were setting sparks off at each other in their rendition of the song. Gene Nelson makes a dashing Will Parker and is equally well-matched by Gloria Grahame as Ado Annie. Grahame renders I Cain't Say No splendidly and partners Nelson in All er Nothin'. The supporting cast is filled out by Charlotte Greenwood's suitably caustic Aunt Eller and Rod Steiger's Jud. It's a pity that the film cut the song Lonely Room, otherwise Steiger would have better demonstrated the dark hues of the character of Jud. Yet it all adds up to a wonderful renditionh of this classic musical, enough to elicit a spontaneous YEOW! during this year of the Oklahoma centenary.

This EMI-Angel reissue offers one the advantage of the dance music and the main titles. This means that the listener gets the Kansas City and Farmer and the Cowman dance sequences, as well as the extended Dream Ballet. The only downside is the extraneous sound effects lifted from a DVD copy of the movie. Yes I share many of your sentiments that these sound effects tend to grate, and long for Didier Deutsch to have used the original untainted studio vault versions. However, let's at least be thankful that the CD producers have offered us a more comprehensive version of the Oklahoma soundtrack that we could only have dreamt of in the past.

In short, this is a wonderful and valuable addition to the R&H discography, and is an equally celebrated rendition of the score like the original Broadway cast recording. Warmly recommended to those who seek even their first version of Oklahoma.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway in a movie setting at it's very best!.......2007-03-06

I have the original Broadway version, but prefer this movie selection.
The CD is flawless and, in my opinion, there's nothing better than a Rodgers
and Hammerstein musical for music, lyrics and pure joy! This is the best!

Album Description

Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.

Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.

"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."

Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."

With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08

This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.

4 out of 5 stars Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08

Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!

4 out of 5 stars Very soothing.......2007-05-14

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13

the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.

4 out of 5 stars Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20

Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

Great CD, as expected! Product arrived within a few days and in mint condition. Excellent service with the added convenience of having it delivered to my door! :)

5 out of 5 stars DMB fans will love.......2007-05-28

This is a great set of DMB music for avid fans, or the ocassional listener.
It includes hits like the sexy Say Goodbye, to more "top 40's" radio-played hits like where are you going.
I love Dave, and his sexy voice, the instrumentals....so if you're new to Dave it's a good place to start. It's a mix of live and studio performances, so if you don't listen to any other cd's you'll miss out on some other good live tracks, but live or in the studio- he's still a magician!

4 out of 5 stars Love the live songs........2007-04-06

Only really listen to the live disk. Everything else is repetitive. Maybe another live album would have made more sense.

2 out of 5 stars Misrepresented.......2007-02-21

First of all I would like to make it clear that I am an avid DMB listener and fan. Secondly I should let you know also that I do not own a studio album from the band. Every album I have is live. The title of this compilation is a misrepresentation of it's objective. This album is not a "best of" album, but more of a "greatest hits" album. It compiles the majority of the band's most successful radio hits even though the majority of the songs that did not make the radio consistantly are much better. Personally, I think that "I Did It" is one of the worst songs that Dave ever did along with "Where are you Going." I would say that if a real dave fan were to put this together replacing some of the songs currently present, I would say that The Best of Whats Around, Rhyme and Reason, Lie in Our Graves, Proudest Monkey, Say Goodbye, Rapunzel, The Dreaming Tree, Last Stop, The Stone, If I had It all and Bartender would and should be on this album as a BEST OF album. But reality is is that this is a Greatest Hits album. Maybe a best of tour album will be released, but between Central Park, Fenway, Listner Supported and Red Rocks (the old one) you already have that. Do yourself a favor and avoid this album.

5 out of 5 stars Best girl singer out there.......2007-04-12

Haven't found a genre she can't sing. What'll I Do is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2007-03-01

Linda has a smooth, soothing, sweet and rich voice that matches well with these numbers. A natural for this genre of good old sentimental jazz numbers! She draws you in and wraps you up in the warmth of her voice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer-Great Orchestra.......2007-02-26

Riddle and Ronstadt recorded these albums at a time when Nelson Riddle was nearing the end of his life. Linda knew it based upon the feeling that she puts forth in these standards. Riddle's arrangements are impeccable. He arranged beautifully for the string section but used some outstanding soloists in Bob Cooper (tenor), Plas Johnson,(tenor) Warren Luehning (trumpet) and Chancey Welch.(trombone) to embrace Linda's solos. Welch's solos are tastefully played with a smooth, mellow tone. He represents the epitome of an artist playing the trombone. This is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Goes to Standards.......2007-02-08

I am just now purchasing the combined CD's, which Amazon is offering as a special. I am so happy that it is out in CD, because I have the record and let's face it who listens to records anymore? I remember when it first came out. It was the first time Linda Ronstadt sang standards. It is such a wonderful marriage of talents Linda Ronstadt and the Nelson Riddle's Ochestra. I think she is so talented and can do anything from Country to Rock to Opera. At that time I think she was not given the credit or recognition. People thought the record would not be accepted. Well wow, it was a fantastic hit and she went on to make a couple of standard albums. Soooo, I can't wait to get the cd's and listen on my Ipod. I guess this is a first, reviewing the cd before I got it.

5 out of 5 stars What's New - Linda Ronstadt & the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.......2006-11-07

I have known Linda Ronstadt from a CD of Mexican Music and the present CD is entirely up to expectations.
