L.A.'s underground rap movement has never really gotten the credit it deserves despite spawning a number of incredibly innovative artists. Thanks to two strong major-label releases, Dilated is on the cusp of the mainstream acceptance they deserve, yet they haven't felt the need to water down their sound for scans a la Black Eyed Peas. On their third album, as always, their beats are on point, from the Alchemist-infused "World on Wheels" to "This Way," produced and vocally accessorized by rap's latest "it" guy Kanye West. Certainly DJ Babu's ability to slice and dice well-produced soul numbers adds a great sonic dimension to most of the cuts. As for the rhymes? Well, Iriscience makes a strong case as to why Dilated might be better off with more of his rhyme contributions. On "Big Business" he plays the "rap Michael Moore," skillfully weighing in on topics of war and surveillance as chopper sounds are blended in to great effect. On the other hand, Evidence hasn't quite stepped up his MC game, so most of his verses don't add much to the overall product value. Neighborhood is your typical Dilated Peoples release: good but not great, and consistent nearly to a fault. One would have hoped that a cut like "Poisonous," a respectable collabo with Devin the Dude, might have put this one over, but it doesn't quite do the trick. It's a solid even listen for sure, but not the "next level" album for which we were all secretly hoping. --Dalton Higgins

Dilated Peoples - Neighborhood Watch.......2005-11-14

This album came out directly after Expansion Team. I don't think this album is better than E.T but its definately a banger.

The style is still the same, different production but the same type of lyrics, they kept it real on this album, lyrically for sure. The production on this album is dope. I also didn't find any weak beats on this album. They have a unique style, definately in the production.

If you liked the other DP albums then there is no reason you shouldn't like this album, real hiphop heads pick this up!!!

Great Album.......2005-07-20

Good and full album by DP. I liked every track on this album, I havent heard much from there other albums, but I really liked this album. Someone recommended this hiphop album so I went and bought it and liked it alot. Good beats and really good lyrics. Buy this now

Solid, but there is something missing..........2005-07-05

When I finally finished listening the whole way through Neighborhood Watch, I felt a little disappointed. They come hard on every track, and the production is sharp (though for the most part not outstanding). The main problem is, no songs live up to the hit single "This Way." And I don't even normally like Kanye... Anyway, while solid on the mic, Dilated Peoples deliver a little less than expected. For fans of the group (I am admittedly pretty unfamiliar with their material), I would guess that this CD would be enjoyable. Otherwise, it's a toss-up.

the album is just lame, and i wouldnt listen to it again. if you like commerical rap with an intellectual twist, check out kanye west.

Not as good as their first two albums, but still good.......2004-10-01

Judging by the reviews, it's clear that most people think that Neighborhood Watch isn't as good as The Platform or Expansion Team. That's true, but that doesn't mean this album is bad, either. Another thing I noticed is that a lot of people say that Rakaa (Iriscience) is a better rapper that Evidence. I think that's also true, but it's not that Evidence can't rap; it's just that his rapping is decent while Rakaa's rapping is GREAT.

Anyway, there are several gems to find on this album. Many of the songs are still politically conscious, like "Tryin' to Breathe", "Big Business" and the title track. And "World On Wheels" has good lyrics and a nice beat provided by Alchemist, which leads me to another point. Production is unsurprisingly solid on here. It's mostly overseen by Babu, as usual (check out "DJ Babu In Deep Concentration"), but when other producers like Kanye West ("This Way") come aboard, things are still impressive.

Some fans may worry when they find that some of the other songs aren't so politically conscious, but they still impress. "Closed Session" has Planet Asia, Defari and Phil Da Agony joining the group for a nice posse cut that shows they haven't lost their underground roots. The aforementioned "This Way" is ridiculously catchy, and the made-for-radio song "Who's Who" is better than I thought it would be.

While I can do without the filler track "Poisonous", this is still a solid album from Dilated Peoples. And we all know that rap records as a whole have been disappointing for a while now, so if you want to hear some good rap, add this to your collection.

I got this CD because I liked the song "This Way" on the radio; I got the CLEAN vrsn because I didn't want to hear the "F"-bomb every 5 seconds. Remarkably however, there is a very sparse amount of bad language on this album. On the CLEAN vrsn the bad words get muted for a split second while the background music still plays, so the quality of the track isn't detracted from much at all! If you like Underground Hip Hop and Underground L.A. grooves, then get this CD -- clean or explicit!

Looking for an album that surpasses all others in terms of music and lyrical flow? An album which deals with real issues to which anyone can relate? An album which shows a dope variety of DJ skills? An album which, once listened to, leaves you thinking 'Hell yeah!' Then look no further, Neighbourhood Watch by the one and only Dilated peoples matches all this criteria!! The lyrical and Dj ability on this album is phenomenal! I strongly recommend that everyone should pick it up!! If you haven't then what are you waiting for!!
