This is a breathtaking debut recording by a consummate song stylist. Val Ryder has the uncanny ability to make familiar standards sound like songs you've never heard before and can't wait to hear again. His delicious jazz inflections are in evidence throughout but no more so than in the uncanny pairing of "It Don't Mean a Thing....." and "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Louis Prima with a jungle beat that just might set your house afire. The hauntingly lyrical "Love Who You Love" accompanied by the Broadway composer Stephen Flaherty seems destined to become an anthem for alternative love of all sorts thanks to Val's deeply moving rendition. Barry Levitt is clearly a virtuoso jazz pianist and the whole band sounds honed to perfection. Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach, Johnny Mercer,..... all come alive in completely unexpected ways. Kander and Ebb's "But the World Goes Round" paired with the Merry-Go-Round song takes on a devastating new depth characteristic of Val's profoundly personal take on everything he sings.
