5 out of 5 stars Definitely an Early 90's Banger From Cold N KMG.......2007-05-16

1992, Above The Law records an album that would help change the game on the west coast for the better; they definitely had a huge hand in the wildfire spread of G-Funk on the west and also, the south because many producers down south drew upon G-Funk's influence and popularized their own deep fried beats with deep groove funk too. But as for Black Mafia Life, Cold 187 um definitely gave up the funk with those P-Funk samples. Lyrically, the album is dope with killa flows from 187 and KMG. "V.S.O.P." slaps with sophisticated funk using a beat pattern similar to One Way's Cutie Pie, and a horn that reminds me of Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love," but 187 definitely gave it his own spin; this is my favorite joint here; these cats trade relentless spits over that sick beat! Get ya drank On to this one! 2Pac and Money B from the biggady bay trade verses with ATL over a P-Funk style beat on "Call It What U Want," perfect for one of those house parties. Eazy-E and Kokane come to kick it on "Game Wreck-Oniz-Iz Game" with the tripped out space alien, cosmic boogie funk beat. "Process Of Elimination..." is definitely on the gangster tip. ATL kicks in the door with some relentless venomous flows. ATL battles their egos and blames them for some of tehir problems on "Mee Vs. My Ego" with some tripped out funk with a crazy rasta verse towards the end of the song. This album should have been given more props for helping start the G-Funk craze of the early and mid 90's.

5 out of 5 stars Their best in my opinion.......2007-05-10

It's a shame how ATL aren't anything more than local celeberties. Popularity doesn't matter mainstream music sucks anyway but the average rap fan knows who NWA, Eazy-E, etc. and don't know slept on legends like ATL, Spice 1, CMW & any other slept on West Coast legends I didn't mention. This album is classic, DJ Quik was really the pioneer of G-Funk w/ his slept on debut Quik Is The Name. But this is up there w/ other G-Funk classics like Chronic & Doggystyle. I haven't finished listening to Uncle Sam's Curse but what I've heard from both I think this their best. You can make a case that Black Superman is their best song ever but Black Mafia's hit singles match up pretty good w/ that song like Call It What U Want (my personal favorite by them) & VSOP. Then has classics that aren't even hit singles like Game Wreckz-Oniz-Iz Game w/ Eazy-E, Why Must I Feel Like Dat, Never Missin' A Beat and it goes on. This album is consistent as u can get especially w/ the production. U can cop this album for a reasonable price while Uncle Sam's Curse is unattainable to get unless u download it off limewire or something which u can do but this in my opinion is a must need for your ATL & rap collection.

My Favorite's

1. Call It What U Want
2. Game Wreckz-Oniz-Iz Game
3. Never Missin' A Beat
4. Why Must I Feel Like Dat
5. VSOP & Process Of Elimination

5 out of 5 stars Yo, my Inland Empire homies be bangin' a 199Tres classicc joint!.......2006-03-27

After 3 years Above The Law is bacc with my 2nd favorite joint of their group albums next to "Uncle Sams Curse" which they won't let you sample any of the songs. It only has 12 songs, but they're worth it. 1 is a classicc joint, 1 I skip cuz its the intro, 4 are ok and the other 6 are good or tight joints. Guests are on 4 songs like Kokane who's also featured on over 3/4's of "Uncle Sam's Curse" album, so you get a good amount of lyrics from my locs Cold 187um & KMG, and the guests are all tight, listen to the song Never Missin' A Beat which is a hard 'n heavy G-funk joint by Cold 187um & KMG, which has a perfect funk to it, the classicc joint Call It What U Want featuring Makaveli & Money B is the joint that put Black Mafia Life on the billboards, Makaveli's rhymes kill on the first verse, Game Wreck-Oniz-Iz Game featuring Eazy-E & Kokane which is another funky joint done with my loc Eazy & funk pimp Kokane, also has an earie beat, and V.S.O.P. also a bangin' joint about drinking cognac, its also a funky joint fool.

The Black Mafia are reppin' Pomona, CA on this joint, just listen to songs 1, *2, 3, 4, 5, *6(featuring Makaveli & Money B), 7, *8(featuring Eazy-E & Kokane), *10, 11(featuring MC Ren), 12(featuring Eazy-E), 13(featuring Kokane), 14 & 15.

4 out of 5 stars Neglected album from neglected group.......2006-03-13

Black Mafia Life is another one of those albums that has been pretty much unknown by most of today's Hip Hop listeners. In fact, the same could almost be said about Above the Law's entire catalog. The third entry, (yes third, they released an E.P. between Livin' Like Hustlers and this album), while not quite as good as their debut, continues in the same vein as their first release.

There are, however, some very large differences. The first is the obvious lack of in person guidance from Dre. While Dre was involved more from a supervisory position on Living Like Hustlers, he had completely left the Ruthless camp and had already released his classic first Chronic album when this Black Mafia Life was released. Dre has, for lack of a better description, some of the best "ears" in the industry, meaning that he can make something sound better just with his input and natural talent. And while Dre's influence is clearly heard on Black Mafia Life, it is obvious from the mixing and overall sound quality that the good Doctor did not help in delivery of this baby.

With that slight in mind, this album is a little harder and a lot darker sounding than Livin Like Hustlers. That is not necessarily a bad thing. When it works, it works extremely well. The MC Ren featured "Process Of Elimination", the 2pac and Money B featured "Call It What You Want", and the unofficial sequel to LLH's "Another Execution" entitled "Commin' Up" all reflect the effectiveness of this sound. The brilliance of looping the original sample for "Another Execution" on "Commin' Up" must fall on deaf ears of the many reviewers below who are unfamiliar with LLH.

That is not to say Black Mafia Life is completely free of the pimped out funk of LLH. On the contrary, "Never Missin' A Beat", the classic lead single "VSOP", and the funky as hell "Game Wreck-Oniz-Iz Game" still satisfy the less hardcore minded. On the latter, guest appearances by the underrated Kokane and an unusually inspired post NWA appearance by the late Eazy-E are true treasures. After listening to E's performance, most will likely be scratching their heads going "where'd this come from" and "I wonder who ghost-wrote or coached that?". This comment is not meant as a slight to Eazy, rather to pay homage to how great this verse is and how truly amazing Eazy could sometimes be. This track, in my opinion, is worth the price of admission alone.

So why not a 5 star rating as others have suggested. Well, having this album since it came out 13 years ago, I've had time to reflect on it. Some of the tracks on here are remarkably skippable after a few listens (ie. "Harda U R Tha Doppa U Faal" and "Pimp Clinic". The overall production quality is not as "clean" as it should be, (reflecting a possible problem with the final mastering).

And last, but certainly not least, there was something left to be desired from the overall lyrics and choruses. Before anybody jumps down my throat, let me first praise the coninued chemistry between Cold 187um and KMG. I think these two together are one of those classic combinations of certain duos in Hip Hop like Erick Sermon and Parish Smith or DJ Run and D.M.C. They sound good together but...They just don't really have a lot to say on this album. The ideas here, for the most part, had already begun being worn into the ground by their many gangsta rap competitors. Tracks with extremly funky beats like "G's And Macaronies" and "G-Rupies Best Friend" seem wasted on rather mundane and formulaic lyrics and concepts.

Ultimately, innovative releases from both Dre and Ice Cube left a pretty big shadow looming over Ruthless records and their camp and the West Coast in general. While this album would be a classic by 1990 standards, the game had been stepped up by it's release in 1993. It had moved a little ahead of ATL when they weren't looking.

My advice would still be to buy this disc. It is a very good album with some required skips and fast forwards but has held up pretty well over the course of time, (hence the 4 star rating). Any 2Pac or Eazy-E fan should scoop this up right away for rare performances by both.

5 out of 5 stars Total Classic.......2005-10-24

This CD is a Killer, Its totally awesome, i bought the CD because i really liked Livin Like Hustlas, however i soon realised that Black Mafia Life was better with songs such as VSOP and Game Wreck On Iz Iz Game featuring Eazy E and also the track with Tupac is cool as well. Buy the album before you regret it. Also if you can get Uncle Sams Curse, i used to have it until it got stolen, ATL definately one of the Pioneers in RAP and also Pioneer in their own style of Rap.

4 out of 5 stars Bill you did it again!.......2000-05-08

This CD is pretty good. The whole Black Mafia family did there thing for this album. I really didn't listen to Billy Bavgate's/ Steady Mobb'n music until I saw the Life in the Streets Documentary. The Documentary then turned me on to the sound track, the soundtrack has alot of versatile rappers such as Dirty White, Gator Man, Buck Haven, Nephew and Ghost Ridah just to name a few from the the Black Mafia family. Then you have the No Limit Soldiers (Bavgate, Crooked Ey'z, Snoop & others) which made it all better. Personal favorites are 3,4,8,9,11,13,*16( you gotta listen to this one.) ~ Also #7 has a catchy little hook to it as well, from hearing that song in the Documentary it made me want to get the soundtrack to see who it was. All the guest appearences, Mack Dash, C.U.Z, J.T the bigga figga, Krypto- Platinum Playaz, Juce and many more are all workin it, for this soundtrack. The over all out look on this CD is Billy Bavgate the Boy Wonder has "twerked" it again, if you don't have this CD at least purchase the "Life In The Streets" Documentary movie Beacause it is Raw and Uncut FOR REAL. Hope to see more from Black Mafia films/ records & SHODAWG THE COMEDIAN (He's the funniest man in the world.") Bill you did that, Luv U 2 Def!
