IBWC Is In Full Effect (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars).......2007-03-26
A couple of years ago I never heard of Yo-Yo, until I hear her go off on Ice Cube's "It's A Man's World" from the "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" LP. Later on that year I saw the music video for "You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo". Both showed that she was very impressive behind the mic. Her third album "You Better Ask Somebody" is an excellent album.
This album came out in '93, and it being from the L.A. area, was where Gangsta Rap was in full effect. Yo-Yo's rhyme was different from females that I am used to hearing, especially today. Possibly because a lot of women nowadays rhyme about things that make absolutely no sense. Thats what I like about her, because she actually had rhyme skills. The album's starter "IBWin With My Crewin" is a very good song. A lot of these songs have a lot of talk about gangsta material (guns, weed, etc.). One of her best solo songs from this album is "They **** Don't Stink" because of her excellent word play. "Letter To The Pen" is a song for her man who is in jail. Martin Lawrence appears on that track as well.
The production is good as well. Most of it reminds me of Ice Cube's "The Preditor" album. Most of it is produced by Ice Cube and Q.D. III. "Pass It On" has a laid back beat, and is a song about passing blunts, features a group of females (Nick Nack, Lady T, Sukii, Chann, and Dawn). Thats actually one of the best songs on the album. Another neck snapping beat is "The Bonnie & Clyde Theme" produced by Pockets, and featues Ice Cube. In fact, Cube is on a lot of the tracks on this album, mostly just doing ad-libs.
Only a few flaws are on this album. "Westside Story" and the title track "You Better Ask Somebody" are the only two tracks that fall under skip material for me. But the overall album is excellent in my opinion. It's good to hear a female rhyming, who actually had skills behind the mic. I thought Yo-Yo dissapeard, but I was out in L.A. not too long ago and heard her on one of the radio stations. And she recently made an awkward appearance in a Brook Valentine music video, so shes still around. She definately needs to come back, because hip-hop needs a dope rhyming female again. As for this album, it's a great release from 1993. Especially if you're a fan of Gangsta Rap, you'll like this album.

YES, THIS ONE WAS A GOOD ONE.......2007-02-14
man, as i sit here and surf this website, i am seeing albums that i forgot about. i remember listening to this one back when it first came out. i had the tape. i hate that i had to hock it because this was one of her best ones. i love IBWIN' WITH MY CREWIN, PASS IT ON, and WESTSIDE STORY. i believe yo yo is doing radio now, but i would like to see a new album from her as well as bahamadia for that matter.
Girl gangstas rule.......2002-07-05
Back in the day when girl rappers were inevitably pop, YoYo flipped the script and became the first real female gangsta rapper. Her beats were funky and lyrics hardcore. You better Ask Somebody is the perfect blend of funk and aggression. "IBWin' Wit my Crewin' " is an unapolegetic warning that female gangs can be just as dangerous as guys. "Letter to the pen" speaks to the world of the girlfriend of the inmate. And then there's "the girl got a gun. " I think that's self explanitory.
But aside from the honesty of thuglife for girls on the album, what makes it good is the beats. Not one song fails to make you bob your head. And a few contain samples from such legendary artists as Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, and Public Enemy.
Then there is Ice Cube. His influence and vocals are all over this album. This type of record has not been replicated by any other female rapper, including Yo Yo herself, ever.
It's truly an original,.

Yo-Yo Is One Of The Best!.......2001-06-04
I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE THIS ALBUM, BUT IT IS TIGHT. MY FAVORITE SONGS ARE MACKSTRESS, 20 SACK, AND PASS IT ON. THE SONG WITH ICE CUBE IS TIGHT, TOO. YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE LYRICS. I'VE BEEN A FAN OF YO-YO FROM THE FISRT SONG "YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH MY YO-YO"! IT'S GOOD. GO COP IT!
