After two albums as Bobby Digital, RZA finally releases an album as… RZA. Although those hoping to hear his signature Wu-Tang soul style may come away disappointed, the man's mastery over dissonance continues. Tracks like "The Whistle" and "The Grunge" scrape fingernails on the chalkboard, but make it sound funky. Guest producers like Tru Masta and Choco help shoulder the load with some beats that sound like vintage RZA (such as Tru Masta's "Fast Cars") and others that take him in new directions. Lyrically, RZA gets even grittier than he did in his Bobby D days, spitting rusty-nail rhymes about his thug past, blasting shotguns, and swinging his Shaolin sword. As he twists your mind on the mellowing "A Day to God Is 1000 Years" and masters his lyrical martial arts on "Chi Kung," RZA reminds us that he's not just the Wu's scientist of sound, but he's also one of the crew's forgotten MC talents. --Oliver Wang

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse of the much anticipated "The Cure" album.......2006-09-22

Rza returns (for half the album) to his bobby steels / rzarector persona on this album and it is about time. Rza takes the listener through a semi autobiographical journey. The album starts out with a young bobby partying and selling drugs without much care for the future or wisdom. Eventually his drug dealer gets him to read a book (not sure what book this is, anyone know?) and bobby changes his outlook on life and becomes spiritual. He changes his name to Prince Rakeem (his first alias). The second half of the album is filled with conscious bangers and is a glimpse into his self hyped masterpiece "The Cure". Rza constantly drops science in the last few tracks and if those songs are a preview to the cure (as I read in an interview with RZA) I am very excited. There are plenty of weak songs to bring down the overall album, half is great and half is mediocre.

2 out of 5 stars WORST RZA CD EVER!!!.......2006-09-11

THIS IS NOT A GREAT CD FROM THE RZA WHO USUALLY IS ON POINT WITH THE LYRICS AND PRODUCTION MOST OF THE SONGS SOUNDS TO MAINSTREAM AND ALOT OF WACKASS GUEST APPEARANCES GRITS WUZ THE GREATEST SONG ON THE CD RZA SOUNDS A WHOLE LOT BETTER ON THE WU CD'S I DONT THINK HES A GREAT SOLO ARTIST BUT DIGITAL BULLETS IS THE ONLY SOLO I LIKE FROM HIM, ANYWAYS THIS CD GAVE ME A HEADACHE AND MAJORITY OF IT IS GARBAGE TO ME SO DONT WASTE UR MONEY ON THIS.

5 out of 5 stars This is The Return of a Prince aka Prince Rakeem aka The RZA aka The Rzarecter.......2006-01-15

For those who thought this was finally gonna be the long delyaed often mythically lp that RZA has spoke on since Bobby Digital implication in '99 was "The Cure" was truely disappointed out the gate. This trilogy or saga that RZA has emancipated to us is his transition from thugged out b-boy to the rza and this album that we have and know as the "Birth Of A Prince" is the bridge in that gap. While i've heard various ammouts of interviews about RZA & The Cure album is nothing will prolly eclipse the syntax that RZA pieces together for a sonic masterpiece. others may be disappointed but the beats are half bobby digital and half prince rakeem/rza seeing how the next lp will be all rza. the albums cybernetic sound which has been done previously on "In Stereo" and "Digital Bullet" has seen a primary upgrade in the first serveal tracks and then by the time you're on track 11, "Wherever I Go" is where you begin to see RZA come out as a this knowledgable emcee that knows how to rock. Even the Bobby-like track "Cherry Range" and Kung Fu inspired "Koto Chotan" makes most Wu fans reminsce back in the day when the clan was prominent. As the album sets to close on the tearful, lyrical exodus "The Birth" and "See The Joy" you get the feeling that even earlier tracks like "Grits" & "You'll Never Know" (which wasn't allowed to use the Beetles sample) forshadowed his arrival and it's a well worth journey sonically through the mind of The RZA. Do not let others discourage you from buying this allow your heart to open.

5 out of 5 stars RZA - The Birth Of A Prince.......2005-12-26

After releasing "Digital Bullet" the RZA comes back hard with another album just 2 years later in 2003. Well, people were kind of like what the f*ck when this album came out. Well let me tell you, he didnt have "NONE" of that Bobby Digital stuff in this album. Its a totally brand new RZA. So notice that. Let me break down the facts for you.

Lyrics, some of the tracks on here aint the hottest RZA material, but he still drops mad knowledge. Some of the tracks are insane at how good he put the lyrics together and what he spit about. He are some stand out lyrical tracks. "Koto Chotan", "A Day To God Is 1000 Years", "The Birth(Great lyrics)", "See The Joy(No other rapper would EVER rap bout this, great song)" and "Chi Kung". Those are awesome tracks. This cd stands out lyrically big time. Some of the other tracks have decent to good lyrics. This album is definately different than his other two albums. But one of my favorites because all of the songs are good and his lyrics are such on point on this album. The lyrics though are definately worth reading. The album comes with lyrics in the cd book, but some are off, so go to [...] to get them. RZA is definately on point lyric wise.

Production wise, this is where its good. I love the production RZA did on this album. Seems a lot more complete and like he took some good time into this album. People thought the beats sucked, but definately not, they are REALLY good and deep. Ill admit, SOME of the beats are decent, but the rest are great. Some good beats "The Whistle", "We Pop", "Bob N I (Which he sampled a small part in the beggining from a "Big Daddy Kane" joint)". "Wherever I Go" a good beat also. And the rest of the 5 tracks on the album have classic beats. Production wise, this album is NOT garbage AT ALL, not even close. Its just people who liked the more grimey Wu-Tang sound arent getting the real grimey sh** here. I love the grimey stuff RZA used to put out, but this is 2003 and this is what hes giving and its hott.

Overall, this is great stuff. One of the best RZA albums for sure. Definatly pick this up.

3 out of 5 stars Half of it is horrible.. half of it is amazing.........2005-11-06

This is a funny CD. Because if you put it in and listen to just the first few tracks, and you're an old Wu fan, you're gonna want to eject it and throw it out the window. I must say, half of the songs on this release are really awful. RZA must be on that blow or something cuz I don't know how he coulda left some of these songs on there. Now WITH THAT SAID.. the rest of these songs are REALLY GOOD. I dunno what RZA was doing with this one. It's random as hell. If you're a big RZA/Wu fan, go ahead and get this one and listen to it a few times so you know which ones to skip, the rest of the CD is really great though.
