I grew up watching Mr. Rogers and only until recently, I didn't realize he had written so many songs. Sung by a mixed genre of superb vocalists (Roberta Flack, Amy Grant, BJ Thomas, Donna Summer, etc.), these songs are as meaningful today as when first written. Unlike so many of today's "children's" songs (and I use that term loosely), these still speak wholesome messages, while also being as hip as anything else currently on the market. My nieces (ages 5 & 8) loved it. My friends' children (ages 3 thru 9) loved it. It's sad to see that some of these reviewers aren't in touch with their childhood (or don't want to be). No, it's not Fred Rogers singing them.
Or hip-hop/rap "artists" (once again, I use the term loosely)...thank goodness, but if Mrs. Fred Rogers gives it a thumbs-up, then I applaud what this album stands for.

I highly recommend this album for children, as well as adults who want to take a walk down memory lane. And I congratulate Dennis Scott (Producer) on his Grammy-award winning project!

Fresh, Fun & Fabulous!.......2006-04-15

It takes careful thought and good musical taste to "update" songs such as these classic tunes from the Mr. Rogers songbook.
It's no wonder that "Songs from the Neighborhood" is this years Grammy- winning children's album;though this album is definitely not just for children. The songs are well-produced, very original in their concepts, and of course performed so flawlessly by some of today's best vocalists. The accompanying DVD is well worth a look also... it's very informative as well as entertaining!

Beautiful Album.......2006-04-08

I love this CD. I am transported back to my childhood and watching Mr. Rogers in our den with my little brother. His songs are so simple and pure, and make you want to be a better person. The recordings of his songs are brilliant. The various stars singing add to the magic of this awesome CD. I love to listen to it in the car. I highly recommend it to any child or adult!

Much more than what you might think!.......2006-04-06

You might think this was a children's album. Well it is, but it's a lot more. You'd never imagine that Fred Rogers was such a good songwriter... but you can tell immediately when his songs are done by singers like Bobby Caldwell and Maureen McGovern that he was gifted in more ways then one. This is a CD that the whole family can really enjoy... it's sophisticated, yet fun. This is a most unique collection of artists, songs, arrangements and talent.

i would rate meatloaf albums in this order=bat out of hell one and two are the best followed by bat three,than welcome to the neighborhood,than chsib.his eighties albums did not do much for me at all.i think this is a great album and liked every song.unlike another reviewer i thought his voice is excellent.if you are a meatloaf fan you will love this album.where angels sing is a beautiful song ranking up with heaven can wait.

Great album by a great singer!Most songs are grade A!Meats voice is amazing.These songs are more ballads and rock songs than opera.if stienmans name was slapped on the album this would have been even more popular.

This is great album.Of course not better than Bat I and II. But it belongs to the group of his best records. Even it was able to enter top 20 in the USA( I think 17th place and was platinum for almost million sold coppies)and it is not so usual.And for the rest of the world it was big success( in the UK reached 2nd place).The song I'd lie for you is amazing and Original sin too. Meat is really able to make a great album without Jim Steinman( wrote only two songs).

I really recomend this album.

Great music, Ok album.......2006-10-02

The title to this review says it all. The music is great. All the composers involved try to stay in the signature Steinman sound, yet they all have their individual differences. The problem with this album does not lie with the producers, composers or instrumentalists, it lies with Meat himself. It almost sounds painful to hear him try and sing. His voice is not what it used to be. His age shows especially as you listen to songs, such as Martha and Where Angels Sing, as he gasps for air and can barely squeak out many of the higher parts. Operatic, thunderous voice, not here folks. If you want a newer album of his that is good, buy Couldn't Have Said it Better. Totally different voice.

REVISION

The above review, written several months ago, is a perfect example of the type of review I don't like, as it is not really a review at all but more an opinion. I was guilty of writing the above opinion in September 2006 purley on implulse, but now I realize that it was not fair of me to write it without explaining -- as this is what a review is.

I generally dislike reviews that say stupid things like: get this cause I like it. Or get that cause my husband likes it. Even if those statements are positive, they still are opinoins and not reviews. Then there are those who write really long opinoins diguised as reviews. That should not be done either; and Amazon should reject those kinds of things ideally.

Now I'd like to take the time to explain why I gave this album one star. I came across this album quite by mistake. I purchased it from the now-extinct Tower records for about $7 (full price)thinking it was an early meatloaf album [possibly cause of the cover]. When I opened the CD and actually discovered that it really was released in 1995, I was a bit taken aback, but decided to keep it anyway and see what it was about.

When I first played it, it sounded alright. I even discovered that it had a song I recognized: "I'd Lie for you and that's the Truth". On first impression, none of the songs were that bad. Only one thing got me pissed at Meatloaf instantly upon my first listen of this album, which I will discuss later. But for now I'd like to continue what I was saying before. Anyway, I listened to this album again. Then again. Then a few more times. After that I stopped. It just went stale on me. Even now it sits in my house; I never touch it. I don't know why I still keep it.

Why did it go stale, you ask? Because I just grew tired of hearing it after several listens. Because after several listens, I could smell the gimikry of this album a mile away--no foolin'! Firstly, this album is really just a collection of generic tunes created to appear like Meatloaf was really trying to do something serious. It has a very 80's retro sound to it, yet without any intrinsic quality, as if the songs where written as imitations of good 80's songs that where good enough sung originally. "Where the Rubber Meets the Road" may have some good imagery in the lyrics, but that one sounds like Meatloaf was copying his previous release. "Original Sin"--just listen to various early-eighties metal albums to hear many songs that sound like this. Ozzy Ozbourne's early solo albums have many songs that can sound like "Original Sin". "Left in the Dark" can easily be compared with many 80's new wave songs (the Motels come to mind for some reason).

I got one comment that "Not a Dry Eye in the House" is a good song. Well just compare that one to several songs on Meatloaf's own "Dead Ringer" album. The last two on the WTTN album can be placed that way as well. Then what about "Amnesty is Granted"? Well, lyricwise, it is an okay song, but musically...it's completely generic. Just compare it with anything Sammy Hagar sung before and you'll have a much more authentic experience.

Now getting to the subject of what instantly peeved me about this album on my first listen. It's simple! What does the album cover show? A 1940's female in fright on some stairs. What does this make one think of? 1940's detective stories and such, of course. When we open the jewel case, we even see Mr Meatloaf himself dressed as a 1940's private-eye. When we look through the sleeve, we see a listing of the album-tracks with an illustration to go with each track, all related to 1940's detective genre imagery. Yet no song on the album has ANYTHING to do with 1940's detective storytelling in any way. No song on this album even makes you thik of the 1940's in any respect! Except maybe for the above-mentioned "Not a Dry Eye", and that one more because of its lyrics. Then maybe that short Spansih-sounding instrumental montage that falls somewhere between tracks 5 and seven or something.

Why couldn't Meatloaf, if he's gonna use 1940's imagery, put some of that into the music and make it interesting. He could have utilized swing elements; he could have put some jazzy sounds into it; maybe some big-band sounds here and there and mixed it with the modern hard rock sound. Instead, the tracks on this album are just straight-forward modern hard rock. If anything, they make you think of the 80's more than the 40's. What was Mr Aday really trying to do, imitate early Rick Springfield? That's exactly what Rick Springrield did in his Comic Book Heroes album--the exact same thing! He used comic-book images and tried to associate them with the song titles, yet only one or two songs on the album really had anything to do with comic books or heroes all together!

Ultimately, my reason for giving this album one star, is not as much in criticism of the album itself, but more to critisize the ARTIST, who in my belief did not and still does not make much effort to try harder.

Walsh's quintessential '80s album.......2007-03-31

If you want to know whether or not peering into Walsh's later-day output would be worth your while, this album is the wisest place to start. After the (first) dissolution of the Eagles, Walsh returned to his solo career, but in a different, lighter, more pop-influenced direction.

Admittedly, it's lightweight stuff, especially compared to his James Gang/Barnstorm era output, though a comparison could be drawn between this album and the eclectic pop of The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get. This release essentially marked the transition from blues-based hard rock with a wry sense of humor to a general sort of silliness with an accompanying lightness to the music. The exception hre is "Life of Illusion", a 10-year old demo he finally fleshed out; the grainy sound, mostly-acoustic guitars (save for a nice slide solo in the middle) and drunken mariachi trumpets (courtesy of Kenny Passarelli) give the song a sound like "the Beatles meet Santo and Johnny," as one critic put it.

The rest of the album is an amiable blend of generally upbeat of pop-rock, with good-natured humor like the wordplay throughout "Things" and the silly hoedown-rock of "Down on the Farm". The more serious tracks, like "Made Your Mind Up", "Rivers", and "You Never Know" are not unlike some of his older, harder-edged tunes, if they were toned down a bit and given a shine rather than layers of heavy distorted guitars. It suits them fairly well, making for a surprisingly nimble balance between his roots and the current environment. Unfortunately, even if you like this album, his output goes downhill hereafter; some of it's not bad, but he hasn't been as good since.

Overall, the four stars are because I've got a soft spot for this album, as it's the first Joe Walsh album--and the album that got me into the guy--when I was rustling through my parents' collection of old vinyls. Subtract a star and a half if lightweight goofiness and pop-rock isn't your thing, but on its own terms, it's a pretty good album and it shows Walsh making the transition to the '80s rather well; a shame he couldn't keep it up.

Great music... Don't listen to Macho Man!.......2004-12-22

Joe Walsh is a spectacular musician with talent that makes other musical artists look pathetic. Too bad Macho Man is too busy being gay to realize it. Whether with the James Gang, Eagles, or Solo, Joe Walsh rules. Anyone who gives this release less than four stars doesn't know what good music is. Macho Man, shut the hell up and get a life outside bashing the (very good) reviews of Mr. Reardon. I am the Reaper, and I'll be seeing you in hell very soon.

Down on the Farm.......2004-07-12

I give this album 4 stars because of Life of Illusion and Down on the Farm. These are two great songs. Life of illusion is a serious song with excellent guitar work. Down on the farm is a comical song that also has some cool guitar in it. Mabey this album isn't his best or anywhere near it, but there are at least two good songs on it.

This is a great album... not at the level of his previous works maybe, but still great music. My fave track is "Life Of Illusion".

What a brainless review of Mr. MUSICFAN from Boston Mass.
Joe Walsh recorded more albums without the Eagles than with them. He's an established name already even before the Eagles, so who cares who's the brains behind that band, right?? :-S I love the Eagles but that's not the point here.
Surely it was not Joe Walsh's band and I don't think he was interested either in being a main character in it. He just participated, period. Gave the band some great songs. Just listen to "Pretty Maids All In A Row" & "In The City", but that's it. It was never the focus of his career.
Again, he already was enjoying of a sucessful solo career. So that shows your ingnorance man ;-)

GOOD LISTENING.......2003-10-12

There are some great hooks on this under-appreciated opus and some fine guitar riffs, as well. "Rivers (of the Hidden Funk)" is probably the best cut, but "A Life of Illusion" and "Things" are also right up there. This album was originally released in 1981 on Elektra and, as a rule, they don't put out junk. You can rip this one and combine its tracks with the ones you like from SMOKER, and you'll have a good listening experience that might make the commute to and from work a tad joyful, if that's possible.

Quiet Brilliance.......2006-06-04

Many of my favorite artists are in the midst of re-releasing remastered discs -- Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, etc. The results certainly improve the record, but so far it has not awakened anything new for me in the work.

This has changed with the release of the Innocence Mission's "Birds of my Neighborhood". The original release was the first without the band's drummer, and took on a far more acoustic and intimate sound than their earlier recordings. However, the remastering done here brings it to a new level. The guitars and vocal are clean and crisp, sounding as if the trio is playing in your living room. You can hear clearly the sounds of a home-made recording, which draws the listener in even further than the initial release.

This album is a joy to listen to, and it gives me hope that earlier Innocence Mission albums will see the same treatment and return to market. Do not let this release go by!

A wonderful stand out album........2006-04-13

One of the innocence mission's strongest albums. There are so many great songs on this CD. And it does sound wonderful in this re-issued, remastered version. A must have for fans of the melancholy- in that it also delivers hope.

The Neighborhood continues Los Lobos' gift for melding American musics--R&B, conjunto, C&W, rock, and the rest--into a sound that's entirely its own. The longing swing of "Emily" is kick-started by driving fiddle, the delicate "Little John of God" features the Arkansas drawl of Levon Helm, and "Jenny's Got a Pony" sounds like a house partyin' blend of Mitch Ryder and Gary Bonds. The best of the bunch, "Down by the Riverbed," employs striking imagery ("A monster cloud like a big black hand") to propel a narrative about the fear of commitment. There's Something Missing.......2005-08-03

These guys are good musicians. They know their craft. That's why it seems like something is missing. Their skill is evident on this album but there is no excitement. That is a fatal flaw in a recording.

the good songs are REAL good, but overall its not consistent.......2005-04-12

I think this album is kind of a mixed bag, because you have good songs like the title track, "Angel Dance," and "Down on the Riverbed." But then you have pretty weak songs, such as "little john of god" (I don't know why, but I really hate this song) and "be still." If you are a completist who is getting most of the albums, you need this one. BUt if you are looking for only their best stuff, get Just ANother Band from East LA: A collection, which has the best songs from this cd on it (though I wish they included "Emily," I happen to like that song a lot). If you get the 2cd set, I don't recommend this cd. I would recommend getting Kiko no matter what, because that is their best cd to have no matter what Los Lobos hit collection you assemble.

GOOD!.......2004-09-05

"Emily" and "Little John of God" are wonderful tunes, the best on the CD. I also like "Georgia Slop"..it's pure fun and a good dancing tune at my wedding ten years ago. Oh to see Roy and Cynthia dance to that one! Thanks to Bill for suggesting the music.
This is a VERY talented band that can handle the fast and the slow, the wild and the gentle music with extreme grace.

JUST ANOTHER GREAT RELEASE.......2004-02-28

Wonderful stuff. This one starts out with a kind of folkish
rocker on DOWN ON THE RIVER BED,and continues with a touch of
country on EMILY. I WALK ALONE is a good rocker, followed by the
sensitive ANGEL DANCE and LITTLE JOHN OF GOD.{'he can't run, he
can't play, he does things in a different way. little john,
little john of god'}. DEEP DARK HOLE is another folkish tinged
rocker, while GEORGIA SLOP has a rock-a-billy feel to it. I
CANT UNDERSTAND is straight ahead rock with a bluesy feel, while
THE GIVING TREE is an accordion driven number. TAKE MY HAND is
highlighted by acoustic guitar and soft, heart felt lyrics.
JENNY'S GOT A PONY is a fun rocker. BE STILL, whether by design
or happenstance, sounds like a vinyl recording with a bad
scratch on it, and is the song that kept this c.d., in my ears,
from earning a fifth star. Then it's on to the highlight of this
release, a lively rocker with a catchy beat and great lyrics,
THE NEIGHBORHOOD. This is a great c.d. for LOS LOBOS fans,and
lovers of good rock in general.

a real alternative.......2003-12-20

this is one of those recordings that when you listen to it the first time it must be listened to again and again. then, after a few turns, you buy something new and los lobos- the neighborhood gets filed. sometime later it's back in the cd player and one wonders why it was ever removed.
this recording rocks, swings, grinds, and proves that all other alternive country, rock and country-rock muscians have a standard to hold to. true musicians all; los lobos is great. the neighborhood isn't their only wonderful recording, will the wolf..., kiko, collosal head, naming others i currently have, are just as exciting. i don't know about you but, i must have more los lobos!

There Goes the Neighborhood, like much of Roomful's oeuvre, is a fairly standard set of blues offerings with more than a hint of rock, dripping with horns and studded with blistering guitar and piano solos. There's an appropriate mix of mid-tempo tunes (Backseat Blues, Blue, Blue World, the title track), up-tempo rockers (Just Like Dynamite, She's Mine), and slower, moodier pieces (Lost Mind, I Smell Trouble, The Comeback), though all the material is focused on light-heartedness and entertainment. If there's not much innovation here, that's not exactly a problem; Roomful hums along like a well-oiled machine, every part in place and never missing a beat. --Genevieve Williams

Give this one a listen----it rocks........1999-02-16

I have long been a fan of Roomful of Blues and have some of their other cds. I will admit that when Sugar Ray left , I did not think I would still like them with a new singer. Was I wrong! I like them even better now. The main reason I like it so much is the amazing voice of Mac Odom. Where has he been hiding I want to know! I predict he will be a big name some day. He wrote Back Street Blues and it is a good tune. I like every song on the cd. I bought it and have listened to it so many times I'll probably wear it out. The band is great too of course. Tight horn section, good guitar....and that VOICE.He has such a vocal range--fromm deep and smooth and sexy to high notes. Makes for one rockin' cd and I love the slow tunes too. But you cannot listen to this cd and not feel like dancing!I recently saw the band in concert and they played a lot of these new songs. Catch them Live if you can. And buy this cd!!!

The Neighborhood Just Got Better!.......1998-09-20

"Roomful is" at it again, finally! Their long time motto is "Aim the Beat at Their Feet." This is a band that blends traditional "Big band jazz" with the Blues. The band has changed (evolved) direction with this new release featuring the Blues more than the big band sound. Chris Vachon's smokin' guitar, Mac Odom's soulful voice and holy moley, a "Horn section to die for." When do you get to hear a "trombone or a bari sax" take the lead. Only when Roomful lets it loose. They are the best kept secret in the business, 28 years in the business. It is a crime that they aren't on Letterman or Leno to showcase the Power that a band like this offers. They can come to my "Neighborhood" any time. Don't plan to sit when this CD starts! Their earlier albums are superb: Live at Lupo's will knock you out!

There Goes The Neighborhood? Here's the new neighborhood!!!.......1998-09-05

Roomful's "There Goes The Neighborhood" takes the boys from Providence in a whole new direction. If you're expecting the same sound as "Dance All Night" and "Under One Roof", you might be a bit disappointed as I was originally. After listening to Mac Odom's soulful stylings a second time, I was hooked. Seemlessly switching from songs as diverse as Doyle Bramhall and Duke Ellington, Mac just might be the best of all of the Roomful frontmen. With a voice that sounds like the second coming of Percy Mayfield, the boys open with Mac's own "Backseat Blues". Followed up with the title cut and Chris Vachon's "Just Like Dynamite". After hearing Percy Mayfield's "Lost Mind", I'm sure he's looking down and smiling. Don't forget, the band lost almost half of it's ranks at Christmas, but the additions have proven to be more than worthy. John Wolf and Kevin May keep the horn section as strong as ever, Marty Ballou brings a strong bass in and why oh why Albert Weisman and his B-3 haven't been with the band before is beyond me. If evolution is the survival of the fittest then Roomful has evolved (again) into the strength of the nation's R&B bands.

If these guys swing into your town, grab your girl and take her out dancing and make some big points. You will become a follower in their music. They do it right!!!!!

Dog, this album of Lil' Rob is amazing, it's the first I bought of him and I love it. I haven't too much to say, but this is one of his best at his whole career, with platinum success and high promotion. Lil' Rob has became one of my fav rappers and he has earned all my respeto.

This Lil Rob cd is tight, this cd allows you see the growth of Lil Rob, and his lyrics. I kinda have over looked Lil Rob lately because he hasn't put out a cd that was good, but then I got this one and it made all the doubt that I had about him go away. If you're a Lil Rob fan or chicano rap fan, or westcoast music fan, then you'll like this cd.

We all love Lil Rob he was the first chicano rapper out there to really speak of the street life as he's seen it and people would speak it in the way they lived. Lil Rob went beond all those other rappers. Just as we thought hell ya!!! this cd (The Album) is tight!!! cant get no better then this!!! Then it comes (Naborhood Music) although different then the rest of his musica. The beats were still bad a** his flow was still good but his lyrics not to hardcore not like the rest of his albums. It's like he lost some of what he had his mind couldent think of much else that was true hardcore gangsta rymes. As writin in his interview Lil Rob even admits that trying to make this album he just dident have it anymore no longer able to come up with that hardcore gangsta material infact he trulys admires (The Album) he had said it was his favorite album that he has done but dispite his changes Lil Rob clearly stated that he still wants to rap for the chicano community even though he's changed but as long as they still want him that is. He also stated that he was upset that rappers like (jay Z, 50 Cent, Lil Flip) could be played on the radio and have musica videos as well, as for the chicanos they cant!!! Lil Rob still wants to put it down for the brown because he believes he's still got many fans that love him dispite his changes in his rap style and lyrics. Lil Rob has spoke his opinion about these other rappers like (Lil Bandit, Mr Knightowl, Mr Lil Ones, Mr Sancho, Mr Shadow) and all the other chicano rappers that want to be put on the radio as well as having there own musica videos. Lil Rob Said that if he had to be that chicano rapper to do it he would. He knows what he's doing however I cant agree with the changes in his style it's not like the old way he raped but in the way he views it he's got a different prospective on the sintuation he feels that trying to go radio play will get them to start playing these chicano rappers on the radio maybe even get there musica videos on MTV, to also prove a point that chicano rappers can rap just as good as all the other rappers can. As for this album I don't see him being at his best like I did with (The Album) but firme just the same with his hit songs (Naborhood Music) witch talks about all the chicanos and the way they speak of there life in the streets (Can We Ride) just a good song for people to bump in there carro (It's My Life) basicly saying it's my life whats it to other people, I do what I want, in a way whats other peoples lives to you. Thats just some of his hits theres also songs like (I Know How It Feels, What Can I Do, I'm Still Riding Like That) these songs were just others on the cd not really his hit singles but have become hits as people begun to play his cd even asking them to be played on the radio. Well the question was is he still puttin it down for the brown??? I believe so Cause he comming second time around with that firme chicano sound. Lil rob always be down for the brown better or for worse he still hanging around look how far he's come now!!! Twelve Eighteen gotta check it out for now homiez I'm out!!!

I think Lil Rob is and will remain one of the best chicano rappers out there. There is a few that will remain above him, just the ones that came out before him. I just wanna know how come they won't show SPM, Lil Rob, Frost or any other chicano rapper's videos on BET or MTV, but BET known for showing rap and r&b videos will show Gwen Stefani who is as white as they come before they will show the Summer Nights video or Put In Work by Frost.

This cd (just like any other of lil rob)is great he really proves to people that mexicans can make it big too.Lil Rob is way better than 50cent & any rapper that is out right now.So mexicanos represent & buy his music!

Another stunning piece of work from Stephen Schwartz.......2005-07-15

How has the, in my opinion, often underrated Stephen Shwartz followed up his massive success of 'Wicked'? Another big budget Broadway blockbuster? Another high-profile movie? No. Instead he has given us a truly beguiling score for a small-scale family musical with a young cast.

The quality of his writing (and, indeed, the performances on this cast recording) is of just as high a quality as 'Wicked', 'Children of Eden' and the neglected gem that is 'The Baker's Wife' (check it out if only to hear the absolutely magical 'Meadowlark').

There are elements of his previous work in 'Captain Louie' (even going back to 'Godspell'), so it is guaranteed that if you like his writing in any way, you will get a huge buzz from this new show.

By the way, don't think that, because this is a cast of young people, the complexity of his writing is in any way compromised - these young people are challenged and more than rise to that challenge!
