There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion.
Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley

Sweet.......2007-07-13
Josh Groban and Charolette Church! Yum. This is a very good album and a must buy!
superb.......2007-07-05
What a voice, what an artist, what a man.
Underestimated in Europe. His concert on 21 May 2007 in Amsterdam was superb!
Oh my Gosh, Josh!.......2007-07-03
I love Josh Groban's music! It is romantic, mellow and beautiful :)
This CD has two songs on it that are very unusual. I believe both are from Cirque de Soleil, and draw you into the music--warning-- While driving, do not close your eyes!
a true star.......2007-06-24
First saw and heard Josh on the Tv and was blown away by his talent! it was about a year later that I found out who he was and bought the first album and can honestly say that I have never tired of his work. Every song is magical and he is truely wonderful. Have since purchased all his work and have also had the priviledge of seeing him live in concert in Glasgow/Scotland and was amazed. such a talented young man with a truely magical voice
Floodgates of the Heart.......2007-06-05
This CD played almost constantly in my wife's car for several years. Josh Groban's voice is so gentle and can go from gentleness to anthematic, almost operatic, textures. He sings in Italian effortlessly. The orchestration on "Cinema Paradiso" is enthralling with its emotional reach, powerful even with lyrics beyond my understanding. "To Where You Are" is one of the most gorgeous songs. Knowing how it moved my wife in the years before breast cancer proved stronger than her body, it touches me now, "Fly me up to where you are beyond the distant star I wish upon tonight to see you smile, if only for awhile to know you're there; a breath a ways to where you are." The song opens the floodgates of my heart. The Corrs were on Groban's 143 label when this release came out in 2001 and join him on the upbeat "Canto Alla Vita." Groban makes an interesting selection with Don McLean's "Vincent," polishing the melody to a fine sheen in ways that surpassed the original. Listening to Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is like being in a sonic cathedral with Groban's voice matching the grandeur of the music. With Charlotte Church on "The Prayer," Groban concludes the set with the Carole Bayer Sager/David Foster composition that makes one contemplate the eternal, "Lead us to a place, find us with your grace, give us faith so we'll be safe." Groban's first CD enhances with repeated listening by virtue of the depth of musicianship and performance. I listen to it now hearing the music that moved the one I love to tears. It does the same for me. I hope it touches you too. Bravo!

A few good songs.......2007-03-30
I like this style of music. But as far as this album goes... It's just "OK". It's one of those albums that is nice to have if you want to listen to that genre, but not necessarily something that you'd listen to every day. The stuff gets quite stale after a little bit. :(
Anthony Hamilton - Comin' From Where I'm From.......2007-03-05
Chilling in the late night now listening to Anthony Hamilton's sophomore album "Comin' From Where I'm From" (2003). Listening to this release is a pleasure, Anthony Hamilton laces this record with soulful vocals, taking his audience through an enjoyable journey. I became familiar with Hamilton a few years ago, when he made a memorable guest appearance on Jadakiss single "Why". North Carolina's Anthony Hamilton opens this release up with a heartfelt tribute to his mother on "Mama Knew Love". My favourite track on this release is the sensational single "Charlene", Anthony Hamilton shines on this joint about losing one's loved one. I especially like the chorus to this memorable joint. On the follow up track "I'm A Mess", Hamilton mourns the women who walked out of his life without an explanation. Another single on this release and highlight is the title track "Comin From Where I'm From", Anthony Hamilton recalls how life can be away around his way, while singing about more heartbreak on "Lucille". Latoya Williams and Anthony Hamilton provide a duet with "My First Love". I appreciate the passion/realness Anthony Hamilton puts into his music, the end result is substantial music, that will stand the test of time. I recommend "Comin' From Where I'm From" for the collection.
4.5 stars: Gritty, Smoky, Neo Blues...........................2007-01-14
Superb song writing and well sung songs. Anthony Hamilton hits the nail on the head with such hits as Mama Knew Love, Comin where I'm From, Charlene, Float, Lucille and Better Days. His voice is a mix of Charlie Wilson and Bill Withers.
A Great One.......2007-01-12
I read that he was simuilar to Bill Withers and Bobby Womack and he really is. He is so real and the music very down home.If you like the style of Bill Withers and Bobby Womack you will come to be a big fan of Anthony Hamilton.
My first AH album!.......2006-08-28
This was my first album by Anthony Hamilton and I fell in love with all of the tunes except Chyna Black - I had to listen to it a few times before I could get into it.
Otherwise, I like his music because he is so very real and down to earth. His words tend to talk about reality and not just what the mainstream wants to hear. Basically, it is down home storytelling.
I hope he keeps writing and singing in his own style and never change.

The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Linda Eder - Great Voice.......2007-07-06
This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.
Not a voice.......an instrument.......2007-02-17
Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap
and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her
one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her
friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far.
the best female singer of the great american standards........2006-07-24
i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway
musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.
i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER
The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder.......2006-02-23
A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it.

Wow! Linda Eder has an outstanding voice. She sells Broadway in the styles of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. After hearing this you will want more.

Following up on the release of his debut CD, The Voice, Russell Watson is back with Encore, another mix of opera favorites and popular songs. By now Watson has become virtually a household name--he sells out large concert venues and remains on the top-seller charts. On Encore, we find Puccini and Verdi sharing the billing with Lulu and Lionel Ritchie on the CD's 16 tracks, which range from the much-loved Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" to "Where My Heart Will Take Me," the theme for Enterprise (the latest Star Trek TV series). Indeed, a more fitting title might have been The Voices, since Watson explores opera, sacred works, film, television themes, and pop songs. The orchestral arrangements on tracks such as "Va, Pensiero" may not win him any fans from the opera contingency, but Watson reveals a captivating sound on pop ballads, including "You Are So Beautiful" and "Somewhere." If you enjoyed The Voice, you're certain to want an encore. --Rebecca Agnew

awsome CD.......2007-06-09
This CD is overall a wonderful sellection of music. I bought it for the one song and have enjoyed all of the songs on the CD.
Versatile Singer.......2007-03-30
Russell Watson has an incredible voice range & a very versatile singer. He even made me appreciate opera!
il divo ancora music.......2006-11-10
The book is wonderful. I love playing their music, its so great. Worth the money, no doubt.
Amazing..........2006-05-05
Russell Watson is amazing. It is truly a delight to hear him sing both the pop and the arias, for he performs both equally well. His rendition of Volare is very fun, and when he sings Somewhere, it's simply breathtaking. His duet with Lionel Richie was also splendid. They really did sound fantastic together. The two low points for me were The Prayer, because I couldn't stand Russell's duet partner, Lulu, and Don't Know How I Got By, because the song just didn't seem to suit Russell's voice. However, the other tracks more than make up for those few inferior selections. Russell Watson truly is a talented man, and I highly recommend this album.
His wrost CD.......2005-01-12
I have all 4 of Russell's Cd's and this is by far his wrose.
The Classical stuff is great but The pop stuff is some of the wrose pop stuff he has even done.

Country music reclaimed its traditional soul with the chart-topping triumph of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. This concert sequel, recorded (and filmed) at Nashville's venerable Ryman Auditorium, reunites Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and other O Brother standouts. With little duplication, the selection extends the movie's revival of acoustic spirituals and Appalachian balladry, though the performances and pacing of the concert aren't quite as consistently compelling as the studio soundtrack. Among the highlights are a pair of originals by Welch and David Rawlings, the bluesy "Dear Someone" and the Everlyesque "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll." Where O Brother interspersed archival recordings among the contemporary artistry, the concert finds Nashville gospel's Fairfield Four harmonizing on the chain-gang chant of "Po' Lazarus," while the late John Hartford (in one of his final performances) renews the deadpan whimsy of "Big Rock Candy Mountain." --Don McLeese

Good music.......2007-05-15
Good music but not as good as "Oh Brother Where are Thou".
Worth the money.
reasonable good CD.......2006-07-26
This CD was ok. I enjoyed the actual "Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack better. If you are really into these particular artists, you should enjoy this.
I'm a Dapper Dan Man! .......2006-05-01
I can't express how much I love this movie, soundtrack and documentary. It's a classic in every sense of the word. The movie is hilarious, the music superb and it makes me reminesse (pardon my spelling)about all those times my parents forced me to watch Hee Haw as a child. It's just the PERFECT movie.
Check this out .........2004-01-29
This is a cool movie no doubt.
I would have rated it higher -- had I not known that some artists in the movie have never been paid for their performance in it -- hundred of thousands of copies sold -- but zilch has been paid to at least one artist that I personally know.
THey were giving this away on PBS -- to those making a donation --he (artist I know of)is ALL over this movie -- but he has yet to be compensated or recognized by the movie producers.
Just try it, it is addicting........2003-10-09
I never thought I was a fan of this kind of music till the "Oh Brother" movie, but this "Down from the Mountain" performance has added to my new love. The DVD or VCR of this is also a must see, where it was good to get to visit John Hartford one more time. I really enjoyed the backstage, inside glimpse at the performers on the DVD. Every single song on the CD is a good addition to the over-all pleasant experience, and I suggest you buy this CD if you are a true lover of good music, no matter what type of music you prefer.

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The bleakest heartbreak abounds on Joseph Arthur's Come to Where I'm From, where this Ohio-born singer-songwriter picks up a guitar and strums out some gravelly, angst-ridden black magic. From the darkest depth of "Invisible Hands" where he sings "Your photograph sits like a scar against my wall" to the raspy groove of "History," this album is affecting therapy for the self-destructive, proving that it's better to play a sad song and smoke a cigarette than to extinguish it on your arm. --Beth Massa
Amazon.com
The music of singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur owes a lot to both country folk-rock outsider Joe Henry and the late Jeff Buckley. Combining the whimsical studio experimentation of the former and the blistering emotion of the latter, Arthur's Come to Where I'm From may confuse on first listen but engrosses with each successive spin. He is able to stretch out his voice into moody, ominous tones, or let it soar out over indigenously tinged oceans of sound ("Invisible Hands" and "Ashes Everywhere" demonstrate his two extremes). The strongest cut, "Tattoo," is the most telling; in the hands of someone with a penchant for high melodrama, this gorgeous gem easily could have fallen like a lead balloon. Arthur instead weaves his voice around the churning acoustic guitar and waltzing bass line to achieve a slice of transcendent bliss. --Jason Josephes
Customer Reviews:
Best Album from One of the Best Singer-Songwriters Around.......2007-07-02
This is my favorite joseph Arthur CD. Maybe its because it is the first I owned - but I like all of his CD's and you can't go wrong with any of them.
This is the kind of album you can listen to many times and gradually, overtime, you will find more things to like about it. It grows on you with different songs emerging gradually - giving it tremendous depth and long, satisfying, listen-ability. Stylistically he is so diverse that there will surely be something for everyone of this album.
Very good early album.......2006-10-03
This is the latest cd of his that I have bought since becoming a fan. It is very good, although I can't say I find it more enjoyable than his newer ones. But it's still pretty adicting. There is a good mixture of different types of music in here but it's not as extreme as redemptions son. HIs voice is more rough and grough sounding here also than on any other cd, but most of the time is sounds very good. In my opinion the first song "in the sun" makes this cd worth the price of admission alone, it's definitly a classic. But anyways, rather than rank each song one by one I would rather say that I pretty much can split these songs up into three categories. Fun/pop, slow/dark/seious, and signature Joe Arthur sound (being mostly him and his guitar singing about previous relationships that usually make for his most popular songs. Here is how I split them up:
Fun pop songs) Chemical, history, cockroach, exhausted and tattoo.
Slow/dark/serious) Invisible hands, eyes on my back, and The real you.
Signature Joseph) In the sun, ashes everywhere and speed of light
*Creation or a stain is in a class all it's own where he sort of raps, or sings fast. Think of subturanean homesick blues updated.
Well know you know what to expect at least, it's an enjpyable album, but doesn't stick with you like others. At least it didn't with me.
A Soundtrack More or Less..........2005-08-18
The songs on this album were the first I heard of Joseph Arthur and I was immediately mesmerized. A few were on the soundtrack for "Hell's Kitchen" with Angelina Jolie and Rosanna Arquette and when I heard them I had to know who it was. Joseph Arthur is haunting, for lack of better words. I've noticed lately, he's going a little more mainstream, which is slightly disappointing. But I think he's incredibly talented and I would definitely recommend this album.
Joseph Arthur is awesome!!.......2005-08-12
I recently have just gotten into Joseph Arthur this summer, so when I wanted to get some of his older cd's so I thought where else but Amazon.com. This album is deep and it had wonderful lyrics that express sadness, love, lust, etc. I really enjoyed it. If you like Joseph's newer stuff you will definitely enjoy "Come to Where I'm From.
Decent.......2005-07-28
There's nothing really spectacular about this album. If you are looking for some background music while your sipping coffee in the wee early morning hours....then I recommend this. I would only suggest buying one of Joseph Arthur's albums since most songs follow the same song structure. Was it worth my money? For ten bucks it was, but a penny more I would've felt robbed. There are a ton more artists that have this sound but can provoke much more creative music with it. If you are one of those sad people that buy "non-mainstream" albums so that you can feel more "underground"...then buy this album, otherwise I would pass.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).
