Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A little Too Short, but hot!!!!!!!.......2006-09-04

I agree with Todd. G from Oakland.. it is a tad bit Too Short, but in my opinion, I'd rather it be a little Too Short than a little too long. Lets look at some of todays albums that have like 5 interludes and 3 filler songs, or dumb remixes, etc. I have respect for the fact that Short wanted this album to be alone, as opposed to adding it to another album, like Short Dog's in the House. Dope Fiend Beat was later "redone" by Bun B with Short Dog in Who need a B, but this album has five stars written all over it.

3 out of 5 stars Good Songs but not a full album to me........2006-03-21

Maybe i would appreciate this album more if i heard it when it actually was released in 1989. I also know this album has a lot of history in it but I cant give it a good review for the fact it isn't a full CD. Good songs are dope fiend beat. Those are the only good songs to me. Mack attack and little girls are good. I understand that this album went platinum but as a true too short fan I find this to be one of his weaker albums as a whole. It has 2 good classic hits which is why it gets 3/5. For every Too Short review check out my other reviews

4 out of 5 stars Short put the Bay on the map!.......2005-11-29

There are very few rap songs that just change the game entirely. For me, "Dope Fiend Beat" just kicked the door down! When I heard this track, I was still in elementary school and at my friend's birthday party. It was the sickest ish I'd ever heard! I loved everything about it, from Short's doubled-over vocals to the booming baseline (of course, the profanity was especially entertaining for a youngster). I bought the entire album when it first came out and heard "Freaky Tales" for the first time: WHOA. When it comes to X-rated rhymes, noone comes close (not even Luke). Now, the rest of the album - eh. It's pretty much all filler (Universal Mix?! weak scratches over a weak drum beat) BUT this album is a MUST simply for those two songs: FREAKY TALES and DOPE FIEND BEAT (still an untouchable classic after all these years).

5 out of 5 stars good sh*t.......2005-10-26

this cd was good cuz every one was rappin about sellin drugs and gangbangin and $hort came out and talked about pimpin so it was cool.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning!!!.......2005-07-17

Many of y'all might think that "Born To Mack" which was released in the late 80's is hella old, and Too $hort's start at this rap sh*#. Well, you couldn't be more wrong. Too Short started rapping and releasing records EVEN EARLIER(!) - in the earlier 80's!! He's over 20 years in the game! Anyway, in the mid/late 80's, since he was big in Oakland and the whole Bay Area, Jive Records signed Too $hort to a big contract, which made Too Short HUGE, and also added quite a few millions to his bank account throughout the years. "Born To Mack" was Too $hort's first album on Jive, it was released nationwide, and quickly became gold. Too $hort presented to the rap world something that they hadn't seen before - the pimp game. Too $hort was the first one to rap about pimpin', mackin', the first one to come out with nasty-a## rhymes about those ho*s, one of the first playas. All those sucker wanna-be a** pimps (like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, etc.) act like they are some big-time pimps, but Too $hort was (and still is) the real thing. Coming from Oakland (home of "The Mack"), Short Dog is first a pimp, then a rapper. In many ways, this music was innovative musically - some of the beats (like on Dopefiend beat) sounded VERY futuristic at that time, and defined the Bay Area sound, so popular today. Too $hort is hella young on this album, and you can see. Yet, his flow is on point (like it always is), his lyrics captivating and his storytelling skills undeniable. Add to this formula charisma , a huge ego and a great sense of humor, and you get the total package. You know the classic off this album (Mack Attack, Freak tales and Dopefiend beat) but the rest of it is extra dope too. This album symbolizes the beginning of an era. Too $hort is the one who started this pimp/playa sh**, and he is together with NWA and Ice T one of the first rappers to put the West Coast on the map. A true pioneer in this rap game. This album is a must-have to any rap fan's collection, it's the beginning. Listen to this album and see where it all started.
