This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.

I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

I bought the Cornelius Bros.& Sister Rose first album on vinyl back in 1972. It was one of the few albums produced that didn't have a bad cut on it. The majority of the songs on this CD were on that album, but it just makes me miss the first album all the more. Why hasn't Rhino or someone else picked up on this group and re-released the first album on CD?

Album Description

Sister Machine Gun was started in 1990 by Chris Randall. He made one record for Wax Trax!, three for Wax Trax!/TVT, and one for himself. They're all pretty good, if you like that sort of thing. All of his records would certainly go under the heading of "critically acclaimed", but other than that, it's hard to pin a style on the music, which sounds like a strange cross between The The, Nine Inch Nails, and the Rockit-era Herbie Hancock. We prefer to call it "neo-industrial-dada-funk", but you're free to call it whatever you like. Sister Machine Gun's fifth album, [R]evolution, is independent recording at it's finest - everything a band can be when it has full control over it's own destiny. Recorded over most of 1998, the record was released to the SMG fan club in April of 1999, and to the general public in May of 1999.

Sister Machine Gun has been making quality music for a while now, and has teetered in different directions while accomplishing a balanced set of albums. The refinement of their sound can be seen in the first three works; with Sins of the Flesh kicking out a great first effort, The Torture Technique taking the band to some great heights, and then Burn getting quite a bit of acclaim. Along the way the sound changed a bit, refining into a techno-blender of vocals, blues, and beats, and I have to say I liked it. Torture Technique and Burn had just about everything one could want, and they hooked me and made me a SMG fan for life. The fourth album, Metropolis, was good but didn't continue the upward trend I had gotten accustomed to, but I thought that [R]evolution fixed that trend.

On [R]evolution, Sister Machine Gun had quite a few songs worth mentioning herein but they hit a reviewing wall because they stepped back from some of the techno-elements they're known for. They still kept the electronics, sure, but this seemed to stray more into electronic-jazz than the former releases did. Randall has always provided that anyhow, but this era of SMG strayed more and more into jazz and blues - as the side-project Micronaut showcased.

Transient One (nice, slow beat with solid - somewhat muffled vocals), Got To Be (slow, with an angry heartbeat), Closer Than Me (heavily showcasing a LOT of Jazz elements), Strange (saxaphone!), and Wrong (piano and symbol driven) are all a lot slower than previous works have been leading up to, and that's good stuff. A lot of Randall's strongest work is when he does something with regard to hurting or wanting, and these songs showcase that art. I'm really fond of Wrong because it has a cold sense in such a nice looking wrapper, with proclamations of "I've known you all along" oozing out of the lyrics. I'm also fond of "Got to Be" because I like the way Randall sounds when he does songs of that nature, almost blueprints for his vocals, and I love the sound of Transient One for the same reasons. Still, all these songs take a backseat to Vibrator. If Randall does slower themes well, then he does sensual even better and this song is probably the best of the album with regard to that. Its sexy and somewhat sultry, proclaiming that he "wants you tonight."

On the other side of the spectrum, Smash Your Radio! is one of around three "driven" songs on the album, giving the angst it has freely while spitting the may of mainstream music. The message was entertaining too, and shows how Randall really didn't like his moments in the spotlight. "It's a revolution, brothers and sisters." It just wasn't the revolution a lot of people were expecting.

Chris Randell began to explore new and exciting sounds with the album BURN which was the first he produced on his own. With the next release he created a modern masterwork of pure rock and industrial dance grooves.

He has gone further into that groove on (R)Evolution. There are the standard rock heavy tunes like SMASH YOUR RADIO and CARBON COPY, but soon there after his interest in blues, jazz and even a little funk creep in and really begin to influence the music, and for the better I might add.

If you want music that stays in one very particular corner, never venturering to break its reigns then go elsewhere. But if you brave, soulful industrial rock, then SISTER MACHINE GUN is your ticket to ride.

Starts out exceptionally strong and slowly loses steam. After half the album you want to skip the rest. Certainly not as good as their previous CD Burn. Only worth the effort for the first 4 songs. "Carbon Copy Man" is a strong radio friendly hit and that is the only thing that will save this album from sale bins everywhere.

A good collection of music from SMG. Mostly groovy stuff, but a bit tame for dancing. Sort of easy listening for techno fans. Metropolis and Burn are better, IMHO.

As the other reviews put this album in it's place Chris Randall has created a great mix of Dance/techno, hard-industrial and 1 word TALENT with minimal cash outlay and a small independent label. Positron records I predict will have continued success. As this records indicates the labels potential.

From James Brown is dead and working with many Mainstay industrial groups (KMFDM/PIG) SMG/Chris Randall has refined all his previous work and created a great CD that does not fit into any one Genre of Music type. 23 previous reviews and nothing under 4 stars should tell you, if you made it to here, you'll like this cd purchase. This guy has to be the most underrated musician to come out of Chicago and of course his band mates are complete talents as well. Great vocals and great funk-rock with jazz undertones await your ears.

This album is sick! awesome stuff, i dont see why people said this was an average album?!?! This in my opinon is the best S.M.G release since the wax trax! days, and the reason is....it almost feels wax trax-ish. A very good album using a few trippy samples, somewhat like " the torture technique " album, with the smooth/harsh appeal of "burn". Also at the same time flooding the album with its own originality. A very VERY underrated album. If you like the old S.M.G stuff mixed with the new vibes then you should definately look into 6.0 stand out tracks "Machine (no!)" "Down on Me" "Loser" "End"

I've been a Sister Machine Gun fan since Burn. I have all their albums now, Torture Technique, Sins of The Flesh, Burn, Metropolis, [r]evolution, and now 6.0. After Burn SMG took a definite turn away from the electronic and began exploring the more organic and funky organ, sax, and guitar which was present at such memorable moments on Burn as the first track, Red. This all culminated with [r]evolution, a funky, techno-organic, jazz/dance album full of catchy grooves and simply excellent instrumentation. 6.0 can't help but fall short for me because its such a left turn in what seemed like a natural progression for the band. I say "band" but its actually just Chris Randall because he seems to have dropped them on this album in favor of Miguel Turanzas only. 6.0 isn't the worst album in thw world but it doesn't have the same life and energy that previous efforst did. In the end the album seems shallow and a few brilliant beats here and there don't really get me going. I like SMG (and other bands) because they take me places where I haven't been before musically. 6.0 feels like familiar territory where I was hoping for an undiscovered country.

      This is the last on my list of Groove Merchant re-issues to get and it is now my favorite (save the best for last- who knew?) This album reminds me of Donald Byrd's "Ethiopian Knight's" because it has the perfect blend of jazz & funk. The real goodies are: "First Come, First Serve", "Sweet Sister Funk", "Sweat" and "Lord Sideways". The import price is up there, but if you are into jazz/funk or soul-jazz from 1967-1974 then I would say this is not only essential, but a great rare find. Grab it while you can!! Ya Dig?

        Interesting collection of songs from two famous groups that dominated the dance disco era by producer Nile Rodgers, and many selections are to be had including one very difficult to find premiere disco song by Sister Sledge, "Mama Never Told Me" that I had originally on well known by inside disc jockeys vinyl album called DISCO-TREK. Some dance hits may be condensed since there are additional multi remixes of various songs which total close to thirty in all. In that case it would be wise to check out the highly rated album greatest hits by Chic, or other collections for Sister Sledge. Nice selection of dance cuts, but that very early song by Sister Sledge noted here is my biggest interest for this particular collection. By the way, "Mama Never Told Me" is not to be mistaken with Three Dog Night song with similar like title. Sister Sledge song refers to underlying qualities of the social "quieter man" and is full of shoo-du-waps!

          Volume 2 has at least 2 entries that are not in their extended (12" or LP) versions, though most are:

          Trammps-Disco Inferno (hey, the liner notes to Vol. 1 said this was on Vol. 3) (10:51)
          Ashford & Simpson-Found a Cure (3:46)(this is the 7" version; still excellent but most would prefer the 7+ minute version)
          Evelyn "Champagne" King-I'm In Love (3:53) (another short version) (Actually, Evelyn wasn't using the "Champagne" nickname when this hit in 1981. I am so proud to be a font of useless music trivia...thank you Amazon, for providing me this outlet)

          I think I'm not giving these discs five stars because the song choices on each volume seem so random. A song from 1975 may follow one from 1982, and there is no reason why any particular group of songs are on any volume. ("Club Floor Classics-The 70's" and Hip-O's "Dance 54" collections work better, to me, because they are more cohesive.) And when you think about it, can each of eleven volumes of this really be THE "best in the universe?"
