Released as a tribute to the fact that Coldcut's legendary Ninja Tune imprint had been releasing records for a decade, this collection showcases the label's rich array of artists. Though assembled in the same spirit as the seminal Ninja Cuts series, comprising a mixture of back catalog and material exclusive to the compilation, a crafty alteration of the title acts as a nod to the 10 years since Bogus Order's "Zen Brakes" first fought its way onto a turntable. From the Steinski intro, the track listing of the first of two compact discs has a distinct hip-hop leaning. It slinks through lyrical activity from the likes of the Dynamic Syncopation before flipping a skit from Roots Manuva over Amon Tobin's "Saboteur" and dropping down to the sultry vocals of Sarah Jones, which parallel the Gil Scott-Heron standard in their declaration that the "revolution will not be between these thighs." Flip to the second disc for a demonstration of Ninja's recent foray into cinematic funk, whether through the raging percussion of Chris Bowden or breathtaking orchestration of Clifford Gilberto's "Restless," the resultant experience is nothing if not widescreen. Settle down and reset your ears for two hours of cross-dressing, genre-bending bliss from one of the U.K.'s most innovative record labels. --Kingsley Marshall

If you're going to get your feet wet, you may as well swim........2004-02-29
Lets rate the label not the tracks. The label, as it stands, is on the up and up, introducing the best aritsts that jazz-core and hip hop (REAL HIP HOP, NOT LUDACRIS) have to offer. The problem, is that this compilation only lets you get your feet wet in the ocean that this label has to offer. Tracks by Amon Tobin, Saul Williams, Kid Koala KILL the rest of the cd. I would honestly reccommend this compilation to those who are ready to dive into some deeper music, it's the perfect introduction into the world of electrojazz and tru hip hop heads. Heavy and hard, this one carries. Just know that this compilation is mearly a cliff note in the world of the tunes of the ninja. Ninja tune reprazent.
Xen Superstar.......2003-07-12
Xen Cuts is basically a compilation of music from different musicians from the Big Dada and Ninjatune label. It's a great showcase of all the labels have to offer and is almost like like gourmet dish of different foods to sample before you decide to buy them on your own. The tracks range from trip hop to hard acid jazz (I love Clifford Gilberto's tracks) and some lyrically sound hip hop tracks. With as many musicians as they have, a lot of the tracks are well done. Granted, I would be hard pressed to find all the tracks appealing, the ones that are give birth to a sense of style that each of the musicians have thoroughly developed through the years and deserve the recognition that they get for their respective genres.
The hip hop tracks are nicely done, the Big Dada Sound track is a highlight just because it features some big name (well, relatively speaking) that all collaborate on one track. It's the perfect high-bass track for any bloke rolling out on the town one evening. The acid jazz tracks are spectacular, especially the clifford gilberto. The tracks leave you drenched in saturation, and push you towards the epiphany of "This is *real* acid jazz". The drum n bass tracks are alright, besides Amon Tobin, it's not really a genre that the labels are known for producing, but some of the d n b tracks are enjoyable. Overall, there are some tracks that pale, while others that embody their respective genre in full. But for the price, it's all good.
Must have.......2002-08-16
Live kid Koala cuts! Rare 'Revelution won't happen bwt these thighs' track and many others. Dude, get it. You gotta.
Oustanding, Breathtaking, Spectacular, (adjective please!!!).......2002-02-09
Wow, Wow, Wow. My brother brought his copy of this CD when he came to visit us. I rummaged through his things (sorry), found it, and it was love at first hearing. I had never even heard of Ninja Tunes before then. This 3-disc compilation features a variety of artists and their myriad sounds, all coming together for one large party (for clarifications, see the track listing posted on this website).
Disc One: Mostly hip-hop oriented. Funky, deep beats with better than average raps, sassy feminists, and an oriental flavor (Kid Koala).
Disc Two: Mostly for jazz buffs. The weakest of the set. Highlights: Gilberto,Clifford; Arc; Up, Bustle & Out; Amon Tobin
Disc Three: Overlooked tracks. Most tracks are excellent. Pay special attention to the Saul Williams track (and watch "Slam"), Funki Porcini, Kid Koala (" I wonder what kind of bear his wife thinks he is"), Roots Manuva, and the Zen Cuts bonus track. It's awesome.
Looking forward to another such compilation by Ninja Tunes
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Disappointing to be perfectly honest.......2001-12-05
Yeah i know, (the price) for 3 cds (just under 50 songs) is great, the packaging is real nice and the names performing are top notch.
The problem is that i was expecting something really mindblowing and there where some great touches but overall i wasn't that impressed. Maybe its because i had most of the best songs because i had at least 10 of the artists individual albums.
Cd 1 is strictly for the hip-hop headz. Roots Manuva kills it of on track 2 while the Herbaliser and Latryrx show just why i think they are the most gifted writers in the scene on track 5. Roots Manuva strikes again on Tobins brilliant Saboteur (track 9), and Quannum MC (track 15) is real hot. This is probably the best cd in this collection with Mr Scruff and Kid Koala making decent apperances. Track 7 is my least favourite (by Neotropic?).
Cd 2 is probably the worst cd. Clifford Gilberto saves it from the dustbin with the amazing Restless and the 10th victim.
Funki Porcini and Arc are above par with decent tracks as is Amon Tobin. Dj Food has the worst song on this whole album with 'The Ageing Young Rebel' (tRACK 10).
Cd 3 is decent with Eastflatbush project (Track 11) and my main man Roots Manuva on (track 10). Funki Porcini gets it right again with (track 2), Porcini's 'Ultimately empty million dollars lp' was real poor so this shows he is decent. Finally (track 12) by DJ Food is brilliant. CD3 has many decent but uninspiring songs on aswell as the ones mentioned.
In conclusion, the is a must get purchase for any Ninja Tune fans and since i purchased a cd recorder i have made a one disc compilation which is great, i advise you to do the same.
(...) To be honest when i started this review i gave it 3 stars but it deserves 4.
DJ Krush vs Coldcut, Funkungfusion and DK and DJ Food compilations are also banging but Funkjazztical Tricknology should be avoided. Laters

Customer Reviews:
If you like this sort of music...BUY THIS!.......2006-11-10
The first 10 minutes of either CD is enough to 'sell' you on how good this album is. Very dark, serious music, and very well done. I have listened to the CD's dozens of times since I purchased this album (2 CD's) and it is just not getting old.
Not only is it a wonderful value (hi-quality double CD album, total of 125 minutes), but the music is great.
Only downside is SOME of the tracks are a little 'meh', but not in a way that would impact my recommendation of this album.
Cold Krush Cuts...........2004-08-31
Dj Krush is simply the best triphop mixer out there, and this is one of his top 2 mixes... He flawlessley delves into the deepest recesses of the Ninja Tunes catalouge and produces on of the most briliant mixes ever put on CD....
Best best DJ / electronica mix I've ever heard.......2004-07-13
There are a few other reviews so I'll keep this brief: I'm not a big fan of much electronic music, but I do like some DJ type stuff, a little trance, dub, etc. and I have some of Ninja Tune's catalogue, and this is bar none the best collection of its kind I've heard.
Ninja Tune has covered a lot of ground, and DJ Krush and Coldcut give you an excellent overview in these two discs. On disc one, DJ Krush covers the downtempo, abstract jazz and more hip-hop inflected stuff from Ninja Tune. I personally prefer Disc 2 by Coldcut, where they get into some of the more frenetic abstract jazz and jungle that first attracted me to the label.
Whatever side of that argument you fall on, these two DJs seemlessly lead the listener through a musical odyssey that covers significant ground, always stays interesting, and carries you from Point A to a very unpredictable and welcome destination. If you at all like the Ninja catalogue (Amon Tobin, Funki Porcini, etc.) this is can't miss -- easily the best Ninja comp yet.
Tight Mix.......2004-02-25
Very chill. It does what few mix cds manage to do, which is to create something more meaningful than only cool songs that bleed into each other. Any fans of any music should check this out, especially if you like coldcut/ninja tune to begin with.
Cd 1 Superb ( Hip-Hop Breakbeat) / Cd 2 (Downtempo) bliss.......2004-02-14
This 2 Cd mix album has the mixing duties divided up between Disc 1 "Coldcut & DJ Food", remixing the artists of the "Ninja Tune" label, with anything as good as their solo albums....with mixes of tracks by Ninja Tune label-mates "Luke Vibert, Funki Porcini, Up Bustle & Out, DJ Vadim, the Herbaliser and Drome", for a dance-Orientated and eclectic mix, hand picking some of the most recognised tracks from the respected artists. "DJ Krush" on Disc 2 is given the same template to work to, yet he chooses far more laid back and intelligent course for his mixes which is in keeping with Krush's `Blunted' grooves manifesto, which is no quick run through, this stands with his own solo work, and as such is ideally suited for late night listening. And through the use of Stoned grooves, is very Reminiscent of these Kings of the Stoner Album sound "Kruder & Dorfmeister".....because this album captures the best of both world and is designed around either a more upbeat "Dance" cd (Coldcut & DJ Food's Cd) and the more restrained "Downtempo" (DJ Krush) and most surprisingly of all, this album could even appeal to people that aren't usually listeners of Hip-hop/Breakbeat.

Ninja Tune is one of the few labels that still appreciate the meaning of the scratch and the funk: mixing things up with vehemence and style. That's not to say that the label's music hasn't grown increasingly loungy, as evidenced on this uniformly fine, if slightly anonymous, 30-track, 2-CD compilation. Or it could merely mean that the language of hip-hop no longer causes psychic confusion so much as nostalgic memories. Certainly the sound of a typewriter in Kid Koala & Money Mark's "Carpal Tunnel" is as antiquated as a Run-DMC album. Tracks from recent signings Dynamique and Roots Manuva, among others, are brand new and, for the moment, exclusive, while many (including "Body Lockers," Chocolate Weasel's Jaco Pastorius imitation) can be found elsewhere, so research before spending. --D. Strauss
Customer Reviews:
the arrangements are killer.......2005-05-25
this is a cool and obscure collection that is great fun. it has techno grooves that are pretty tight, the heaviest being on disc one. disc two is milder, but no less good. If you dig techno electronica stuff that isn't cheesy, and you want to round out your collection with a few obscure works, than this is the perfect fit. If you want an eclectic cd collection, this will definitely fit the bill. It is terrific and evocative music that rules all the time. I hope more people stumble across it somehow.
oh sweet heaven...........2001-08-22
With a cd like this, you'll soon forget friends and family. Amon tobins "melody infringement" has got me in the knees, on the floor, lost forever.
THIS CD IS AN EARGASM.......2000-11-17
I love this compilation. It is so rich in jazzy horn lines and mind boggling rhythms for beat-lovers. There isn't as much hip-hop on this compilation as Ninja Tune really has to offer, but there great jazz and trip-hop is masterfully compiled on this album with great artists like Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, Luke Vibert, Up, Bustle and Out, and many others. Anyone who wants to expand into an advanced realm of beats, supplied by the talents of Luke Vibert and others and dark Jazzy horn riffs, supplied by Amon Tobin, J. Swinscoe and others, you're in for a tasty treat. However, be warned. If you are into the trance scene, or into house beats, this might be a gap you may want to refrain from bridging, but otherwise, go for it. buy this CD now, and I'll guarantee that the snares will be crisp and the symbols will ring.
.....and I thought electronica was all about dancing!.......2000-04-17
If you want to hear full quality, intelligent electronica, this is the label to turn to. The 'Ninjatune' label has a lot of good music to offer. I really did not appreciate this album on first listen, but as i kept listening, it became interesting, and fun to listen to: especially if you like jazz music. This is trippy jazz, though! I would also recommend (highly over this one) "Cold Krush Cuts". That one is a good album, but this has a better variety of the Ninja. You might not get it if you are into dance, trance, or whatever, and are not willing to try something new! ....so be warned!
A great overview of the Ninja Tune label.......2000-03-25
A must-own if you're a fan of the Ninja Tune sound! You'd be better-off getting the full albums from some of the featured artists (Clifford Gilberto, Mr. Scruff, Roots Manuva). However, for many (ie Up Bustle and Out) this compilation represents the only good songs from their albums - so you save some cash by getting the meat and cutting out the fat. Overall, an excellent sampling of the talent Ninja Tune has to offer.
(And no, you're not going to get brainless trance music. If you want to dance, look elsewhere - but if you want quality electronica, Ninja Tune has it in spades.)

Horace Andy "Passionate Singer",.......2004-02-19
When the album says "16 Massive cuts" from the 70's they really mean "MAH-SSIVE MON"! I've been a devoted reggae music listener since childhood and this album is one of my all time favorites. Although, reggae music has changed dramatically over the years, the best reggae music to me is from the dub sounds of the 70's era. If you are interested in listening to some original reggae sound artists then I suggest for you to start with Horace Andy. For those who know of him will agree that he has maintained and will always be remembered as a popular reggae singer of all time. The album's 16 colossal cuts have been mastered to perfection. Most of his songs are about love and life. He has perfected the sounds of reggae through rock steady/early reggae, lovers rock even early sounds of dancehall. This album is gem without a doubt. So buy this album. Jah Bless to all and One Love, Coco Pe Benito (Washington, DC

Jah Bless to all and One Love, Coco Pe Benito (Washington, DC).
The Sweetness of Horace Andy.......2001-08-04
No matter what genre of music is being discussed, if the title for most distinctive voice was doing the rounds heatedly at your dinner table, the incomparable voice of Horace Andy would weigh up quite strongly against most any contender. Hailing from Jamaica and honing his skills at the now legendary Studio One den, this collection is a must-have for fans and interested persons of this gifted artist alike. The key to Horace's genius comes down to two things: the most prominant simply being his beautiful vibrato-rich tenor. The other, his extremely subtle shift in vocal tone, bending slightly off-kilter to provide those moments when you get that rush in your heart knowing you are listening to a divinely soulful interpretor of music. This album is ripe of such moments. The album kicks straight into one of his most beloved (and self-penned) tunes 'Skylarking', a tale warning youths of the inevitable consequences of their choices in the rough and rugged streets of the Jamaican ghettoes, which serves relevant anywhere in the world where the dog-eat-dog poverty sits thick. Horace has a sensitive ear and a thoughtful mind which he applied to all his songs, and other stand-outs include the pro-black Rasta groove of 'Zions Gate', and his dub classic 'Money Money' who's refrain '...money, money, money is the root of evil' remains a pretty relevent mantra for us all to remember and keep in mind in these heavily consumeristic times. But don't be fooled. Social consciousness is displayed, and alongside that sits the lover in Horace. The sweet charm of 'Just Say Who', the superbly (bass) crafted 'My Guiding Star', and the melancholy, fragile gem of 'Rain From the Sky' (which I prefer over Delroy Wilson's original) would make anyone's eyes lower in the company of their beloved. This collection pointedly shows why Massive Attack commissioned Horace to perform on all three of there lps. A beautiful showcase of a special soul to many, and deservedly so.
Nice Choice for Horace Andy fans.......2000-03-20
This is a nice Cd for anyone who wants to get to know about some classic 70's reggae. Horace Andy has a sweet falseto that was often imitated. This collection has 16 tracks that makes a good value. A good amount of these songs are remake covers of other reggae artists. So this may not be a great choice for those looking for original Horace Andy songs. Other CD's to check out are "In the Light" and"Good Vibes".

One of the few cds..........2005-06-25
that when they say CLASSIC, it's really a CLASSIC!
Everyone throw on your BVD's, Lee jeans and your Kango hats. This cd takes you back when 'HIP HOP' started and how it progressed.
I remember breakdancing to 2)"looking for the perfect beat, getting my groove on with 10) "tender love" and chilling in my Escalade with 16) "superthug"
KLASSIC!!!.......2003-05-28
Nothing but fun listening - that is what this disc is all about.
Taking you back to a day when hip/hop and rap where in an infancy stage, these cuts remind you how revolutionary the sound of early hip hop truly was.
There is no filler on this disc - you know every one of these songs, and they sound as fresh and as good as they did 20 years ago.
"Planet Rock" with its thick grooves and "Don't Stop" chorus has to take you back to the day - "Ladies First", with not only the choice vocals of Latifah, but the added joy of the rapid fire delivery of the long-missing Monie Love - "Humpty Dance" with the Digital Underground having fun "gettin' busy in the Burger King restroom" and a killer dance groove - "Me Myself and I", with the only rappers that could rival the Fat Boys for entertainment value in a rap - "Jump Around" - still an anthem to this day, and still sounding as fresh as ever - Naughty By Nature's one-two punch of "OPP" and "Hip Hop Hooray"...and that's only half the cuts on this disc.
You'll sing, you'll dance, you'll be reminded of how much fun you had in the clubs. There isn't more fun to be had for under $... on any disc that wil come out this year.

Great blend of classic house, disco & electronic sounds..........2000-07-31
Really dig this CD. It's one of my favorites on my changer while stuck in traffic. It is the perfect blend of various styles of dance music that is on the edge. It holds the beats to liven any party, and for the hard core party goer it takes you down a very good memory lane.
