5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack to one of the best & most important video games in video game history, but could of been much better!!!.......2007-03-28

this soundtrack is with out a doubt one of the best musical scores i own hands down. theres just that it about it. very relaxing, very happy, very dramatic, & very whoa...thats creepy & just gave me goose bumps. all 82 are classics in my opinion. with that said there are some annoyances & drawbacks. one is that alot of these tracks are just to short plain & simple. a coulple more loops per tracks would do these tracks more justice(I.E. ice cavern & fire temple with an average of 40-45 sec.?????). speaking of the fire temple, there was supposedly some sort of anger some muslims had reguarding the messages(fire temple chanting), there was a protest by them, & nintendo(in the muslims favor)respectivly removed the chanting(as found in the 1.0 & 1.1 versions of the n64 game)& instead replaced it with a new reworked version(as heard in the 1.2 n64 version & all gamecube versions). i like both versions but i like the reworked version a little better(it just has that creepy goose bump feeling about it). it reminds me alot of the shadow temple with those weird deep voices(organ like). i just basically call the new version shadow temple part 2. now with that said...the fire temple theme on this cd is only 42 sec. long. they could of indeed used the new reworked 1.2 version with the organ like voices to make it better & more complete. no istead they just strip most of it & all you end up with is just the fire temple intro. pretty dumb on nintendo's part to do this. bottom line...this should of been a 2 cd set to really let the tracks have their time to shine, & the reworked fire temple theme should of made it to this set(with about a 2 min average)instead of this short track thats on this set. i still recommend this great piece of history along with the the majora's mask 2-cd soundtrack, majora's mask orchestrations, the ocarina of time hyrule symphony, ocarina of time re-arranged, the wind waker 2-cd soundtrack, zelda the music soundtrack, & the zelda sound collection soundtrack. there are other zelda soundtracks floating around that have'nt made it to their official pressings yet(the minish cap, the legend of zelda, the adventure of link, a link to the past, link's awakening, oracle of ages, oracle of seasons, a link to the past: four swords, four swords adventures, phantom hourglass, & twilight princess). all this great music just sitting there in the nintendo vaults just rotting away. when it could in fact be made into the ultimate zelda anthology cd set. 21 cd's worth of essential zelda greatness. i wish nintendo would stop letting their music go to waste & just do something with it like turn them into big box sets. anyway i recommed this OOT soundtrack to all.

When people think of Legend of Zelda, they don't just see Link with his Master Sword and shield; they hear his music, too! As a Zelda fan, this CD is a very good reflection of the sense of pride I can feel when I play the game. =D

However, you shouldn't pay $50 for it. If you go to a Japanese import site, like CDJapan, you can find it new for only $20! Amazon just can't compare. Just search for "zelda" and you should find it. ^_^

JUST BUY IT!!!!!!! and get a master sword too. there both found here on amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2006-09-29

I've always been impressed with Koji Kondo's compositions for the Zelda and Mario series, and this is no exception -- most styles of music are represented here, and all of them have fantastic melodies. The instrumentals (all simulated, of course) are just right. Purchase this immediately if you're a fan of the video game, or just good music.

5 out of 5 stars Best stuff ever--period........2006-08-31

Okay, I don't usually listen to orchestras and stuff. I listen to Heavy Metal, like Trivium and Slipknot. This CD is a LONG way from that. I love it. I played the game 1 year ago. I still remember, picture perfect, what I was doing when that song played. Shooting arrows at the sun, fighting Ganondorf, fighting Ganon, everything. This CD is just awesome. If you have played Zelda: OOT, you better buy this CD. It kicks butt.

Pairing DJ Krush, known throughout the beat underground for his subdued, trippy soundscapes, with Japanese avant trumpeter Toshinori Kondo may seem an odd pairing. This record, however, is instantly knowable and intuitively easy to grasp. Krush's beats, while certainly up-front, don't come at the price of the composition, nor do they blast Kondo's trumpet out of the tune. DJ Krush is not only able to drive the direction and tempo, but he's also quite adept at creating mood--often mixing up somber, downtempo collages that glide with an underwater grace. His uptempo work is direct, solidly propelled by someone who knows how to handle bass and breaks. Thankfully, the canvasses Krush mixes up are large enough to include Kondo's color work. The trumpeter (who's worked with the likes of Herbie Hancock and John Zorn) takes full advantage of the opportunity. Kondo is a breathy, richly toned player, and his meshings add to the dreamy, psychedelic feel of the recording. He's effective whether he's drifting beside Krush's swirling dub coiled in a haze of effects or punctuating beats with pure blasts of horn fire. A hip-bop classic. --S. Duda

3 out of 5 stars Jazziz Magazine is right on the money (scroll up).......2007-01-09

The trumpet throughout most of this album is unhelpful enough to make me wish it wasn't there at all on some songs. There are brief moments when Kondo's playing illuminates and enhances Krush's moody, earthy beats, but throughout much of the album the horn playing is uninspired and unfocused enough to become distracting and actually diminish the effect of the beats. In places, it kind of sounds as if Kenny G. wandered into a Tokyo ghetto and couldn't find his way out. Those familiar with Krush's other collaborations with edgier, more bombastic Jazz horns (e.g. Edge of Blue) will recall how well they worked out. The album isn't all bad, though. Krush's signature soundscapes make Ki-Oku a satisfying listen when they're being complimented by Kondo, and still listenable when they're not. Recommended for background music more so than for attentive listening.

5 out of 5 stars great album for relaxation with quality music.......2006-01-29

As a trumpet player, I was looking for an album featuring a trumpet with a jazz/free form style and interesting production and beats. This album is exactly what I was looking for, and I'm hoping to do something in this style myself.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Good Stuff.......2005-07-21

dj krush rarely does much for me as a solo act, but when i noticed he had teamed up with a trumpeter, toshinori kondo, my interest peaked. the collaborators turn out a simple album. dj krush lays down the beats and toshinori kondo plays the trumpet over them. krush and kondo switch between upbeat and slower numbers, most of which don't deviate much from what you would probably expect from krush. on a personal level, i find that the more ambient tracks work better. the beats tend to be more spatial, thus allowing kondo the drivers seat and giving him more room to explore. kondo plays mostly muted melodic notes in a cool jazz fashion, and occasionally he'll play the electronic trumpet - which usually sounds like multiple trumpet parts. the more upbeat tracks have a monotonous beat underneath that just grind my nerves after a while, although they may be a nice spin for you dj folk. for comparison sake, focus somewhere between miles davis 'doo-bop' release and graham haynes 'music for the 21st century.'

5 out of 5 stars One of the most Consistent fusions of Jazz/Trip-Hop.....(Miles Davis would be Proud!!!).......2005-07-05

Dj Krush has been a premier figure in the art of stylished, beat arrangements, for some 12 years now, and he's produced a level of albums that have remained remarkably consistent. veering from hard-edged, hypnotic beats, to Slow cerebral laid-back grooves, as well as ominous and brooding soundscapes, and defining nocturnal and slightly detached tempos. Dj Krush has relatively explored the vast majority of avenues that a DJ/Producer can reasonably expect, encompassing: 'Trip-Hop, Breakbeat, Electronica, Acid-Jazz, Hip-Hop, Ambient'. And he is also remarkable for not only having collaborated with a great many artists, but seemingly able to generally always get the best, out of whomever he decides to collaborate with. Probably one of the more unexpected collaborations, was with celebrated Japanese trumpeter "Toshinori Kondo", who is able to manipulate the trumpet to perform in a sort of lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, that at times is refined, confident and mannered, but then also able to remain inventive with his performances and change the dynamic with a reflective, detached and atmospheric arrangement. Dj's taking Jazz instrumentation and implementing it within the confines of Trip-Hop/Hip-Hop isn't anything new, but instead of making a fairly uptempo Jazz/Hip-Hop record, Krush scales back on the BPM, and produces something far more cerebral and in tune with the relaxed feel, or something like 'Miles Davis'' seminal "Kind of Blue".

What DJ Krush actually contributes himself, is a level of slow burning production, that pays full respect to the trumpeter, providing the programming and beats and more importantly in giving the music a subtly shifting quality, and beautifully coupling the laid-back grooves and low-slung beats with the lushly passionate arrangements, that work perfectly with the tonal and structurally harmonic orchestrated trumpet. Toshinori Kondo himself centres himself perfectly around the widely sensual, atmospheric textures, and languid, mid-tempo break-beats that Krush is able to provide, and rather than remain completely reliant on one form of trumpet, the various tracks across this remarkable album feature him using acoustic and electric trumpet. With some of the tracks that feature electric trumpet owing a sizable influence and debt to Miles Davis's late-period electric albums.

If you've become accustomed to the more uptempo, and breakbeat/Trip-Hop albums, that DJ Krush has become famous for, so long as your aware that no Vocal collaborations with Rappers or singers exists on this record, or that there is nothing here, that largely resembles the blunted, smoked-out beats of other albums, most will find this to be a supremely well-produced and surprisingly soothing album. Think more like an album that has more in common with steamy, soundtrack-type music, with the emphasis on slow beats, scratching, and mellow horns, and intimate grooves layered on top of other grooves. It has the sort of introspective and reminiscing quality of 'Miles Davis's' electric trumpet, fusion of jazz/electronic masterpiece: "In a silent way", but with a heavy emphasis towards beats fused with cool trumpet. Krush fans shouldn't hold back in any hesitation in purchasing this, as it really does fit within the brilliantly consistant run of albums that Krush has produced, and is arguably some of his most melodic and breathtakingly gorgeous work. And such is the elegantly stylish nature of this album, that places a firm emphasis on cerebral intimate harmony, that it has the accessibility & sheer brilliance to grab DJ Krush a whole new set of fans......unquestionably reccommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz for blade runners.......2005-06-18

I'm forever in search of the perfect jazz/electronica hybrid, but 99.99% of the albums that are classified that way are just jive dance music with badly-played trumpets or tablas or some damn thing thrown into the mix. Some of Nils Petter Molvaer's music, particularly an obscure remix CD called "Recoloured," comes close; Erik Truffaz's "The Mask" tried to come close, but was too simple and pallid; but Ki-Oku is THE stuff -- the music that Miles Davis would be playing now if he was still alive and awake. Using trumpets and turntables only, two Japanese guys invent vast, brooding sonic landscapes that sound like what Deckerd of "Blade Runner" would be listening to if he had really good taste in jazz. The first track, "Toh Sui," was obviously at attempt to make a "dance-friendly" opener, but after that, the album dives deep into echoey, lonely spaces that are perfect for 3am stoned listening. I gave a copy to one of the guys who helped create "The Matrix" and he said, "This album makes me hallucinate."

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2006-01-15

Well this cd had some dissapointments, One was the tacky Techno songs. Yes I know this cd was arranged this way, but some just go too far with it. The "Shop" song though is a good take on it. Changing it into a neat jazzy song. Last Battle, and Zeldas Theme arn't too bad either. Anyway to make a long story short, If you arn't a big fan of techno (like myself), but want to own this, go ahead. Just a warning you might be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Expands on underappreciated tunes. In a great way........2004-10-29

I bought this CD about a year ago, and I still enjoy listening to it. I especially recommend to anybody who likes techno music - you probably should like Zelda, too. I'll give my impressions for each track below.

1 - Title theme - takes a sleepy, kinda boring music (that I always skipped in the game, anyway) and gives it a beat. It makes it much more interesting than it was. 8 out of 10.

2 - Battle - an interesting choice for sure. Usually, the battle theme, while ever-present, isn't something you'd pay attention to. It's more of a warning about nearby enemies than a full-fledged music track - or at least it seems that way in the game. Here it's greatly expanded (again with the techno beat treatment) and becomes a tune you might expect to hear in, say, a sub-boss fight. Another 8.

3 - Lost Woods - while this tune can be hyper-annoying in the game (especially if you happen to forget the way in the Lost Woods and end up spending hours there...like me...), in non-repeating doses it's quite good. In fact, this would be an excellent track if not for the annoying yelping noise (what IS that?) towards the end of the track, when it repeats the beginning - only with yelps. 7 out of 10.

4 - Shop - here's where this CD shines. It takes a simple tune and repeats it about 4 times, using different instruments. A simple recipe for success - this song is entirely fun to listen to, and the tune is deep enough that it doesn't get boring. My favorite is the part that sounds like an electric organ - and of course the end part repeats the opening, only somehow better. More climactic. This song is pure fun. 10 out of 10.

5 - Epona's Song - Hm, Amazon missed this one in their track listing. The music isn't anything to write home about - just the sleepy ranch music that sounds much like the game's. What makes this song really interesting is that it's actually sung - with lyrics, which the games have never done (the most speechlike thing I've heard in a Zelda game was "Oy!" in the Wind Waker). And it's good! Probably best if you can understand the Japanese lyrics, but another reviewer did us all the favor of posting a translation. It suits the game, and sounds great overall - especially that part towards the end where - what are those, bagpipes or something? - join in with the aforementioned "ranch" music. At least an 8 out of 10, though I may be underranking this one.

6 - Zelda's theme - I wasn't going to say much about this track, but I just listened to it again, and it's better than I remember. The main part sounds exactly like the game's ocarina, and the outstanding backup makes this an ultimate version of the game's most important theme music. 9 out of 10. Doesn't make 10 because it doesn't do anything really unique with the music - just does it really well.

7 - Middle Boss battle - I wish the regular boss battle had been remixed, too, but I'll make do. That being said, this is excellent, and keeps up the pattern of taking rather forgettable music excellent. I'll give it an 8, because 9's and 10's have to be special. Still good, though.

8 - Temple of Time - the background vocals are great, but the main one (to the actual tune of the Song of Time - you know, C-Down, A, C-Up, repeat) doesn't do it for me - it sounds too much like the game's...that is, it doesn't sound like real people. You can tell by the change from note to note (though when the notes are held, they sound convincing). Ignore that, and it's fine - did I mention the background vocals are fantastic? 6 out of 10.

9 - Kotake and Koume's theme - good overall, but this track commits the almost criminal offense of not including the original's opening music - the one that accompanies the two witches laughing. How could they miss that!? Still, the rest of the rendition is excellent and blah blah blah, but without that opener, I'd have preferred something like the Gerudo theme instead. 7 out of 10.

10 - Hyrule Field - wonderful. Simply wonderful. The original was good, but not all that memorable (I remember people lamenting the lack of the usual Zelda overworld theme), but this changes all that. Takes the original and makes it spectacular. The violins, the saxophone at the end (don't quote me on that, I know squat about music) - beautiful. 10, no question. Also gets my vote for "Best on CD".

11 - Great Fairy's Fountain - it's all right, but I can't think of anything to really recommend it with. It's hardly any different from the game's, to be honest. And despite being classic Zelda, it's kind of boring at this length. I would've preferred a more ambitious attempt on a different track, like say the Forest Temple music (with lots of drums) or maybe a long version of the Bolero of Fire (personal favorites of mine). 5 out of 10 - I usually skip this one.

12 - Last Battle - I won't be as generous as some with this one, but I can't deny that it's an excellent rendition. Would've been perfect for the game itself - it's climactic, epic, and tense, just like a final battle should be. The only reason I don't score it higher is because, for a actual standalone music track, it's really long and doesn't really go anywhere - it remains fairly constant, without especially building up to anything. It's best as background music when you're doing something else (maybe fighting off evil sorceror beasts). 8 out of 10.

Overall, on my personal scale (not an average), I'll give this CD a 9 out of 10. The Hyrule Field and Shop tunes make everything worthwhile, and despite my saying that, it's not like they're really compensating for anything bad to start with. Some tracks are very similar to the originals, others less so, but they're excellent, all in all. Highly recommended for Zelda fans, especially those that appreciate techno/dance music, since they're more likely to share my tastes.

2 out of 5 stars A few great tracks, but most of them...aren't.......2003-12-02

There are a couple of gems on this cd, but I don't like most of the songs. The majority of them are low-mid quality techno arrangements of songs that sounded just fine the way they were.

There are a few songs of noteworthy concern. The Lon-Lon Ranch has Japanese vocals in it, providing an interesting experience. I didn't really like it, but some people might. The Temple of Time is completely vocal(no words, just sounds and wordless chanting), but you can tell that it is just a bunch of recorded sounds edited together rather than people singing, and it ends up sounding very tacky.

The Great Fairy's Fountain is ok, but sounds very similar to the original track.

There are only three songs that I like on this cd, and I consider them to be excellent pieces. The Hyrule Main Theme captures the adventurous and upbeat spirit of the original and successfuly takes it in a new direction, adding some light jazz, percussion, and string instruments. Very fun to listen to. Zelda's Theme(track 6) is a slow, beautiful arrangement of the Song of Time, played by an actual ocarina and backed up by soft chimes and violins. The Last Battle theme is unarguably the best song on here, capturing the intensity and tension of the last battle with Ganon while at the same time expanding on the original theme.

If you can buy a used copy on here or ebay, those 3 songs are worth it. But don't pay full price for this cd. It isn't worth it.

5 out of 5 stars BEST GAME MUSIC CD EVER.......2003-10-28

I have both Ocarina of Time soundtracks: the original game soundtrack, and this new rearrranged music. After hearing this CD, I have a new respect for video game music. Best game music EVER!

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss out on this awesome CD!!.......2001-05-13

The very first thing I wish to note about this CD is that it is NOT the original soundtrack to Ocarina of Time. It consists of certain tracks taken from the original soundtrack which have been remixed by an artist known as MOKA. That being said, here's my review:

I can hardly describe just how well MOKA's variations compliment Kondo's fantastic compositions, while still managing to stay surprisingly true to the originals. At first the music is slightly alienating because it initially seems so different from the original music, but the more you listen to it, the better and better it sounds! These remixes are unforgettable and will quickly end up among your favorites. Listen with headphones and it's like hearing it for the first time all over again. Reeeeally nice....

The lyrics to Epona's Song are printed (in Japanese) in the enclosed booklet. Here is the elaborated English translation:

Epona, Epona (Epona, Epona)
Come close (Sobanioide)
Together the two of us (Futari de ireba)
Won't be sad (Kanashi ku nankanai)
So I say (Dakara)
Epona (Epona)
Come here, come to me (Koko ni ite)
You are the one (Omae dakeba)
I will protect (Mama deageru)

This is the way I remember it (Koshite iru to omoidasu)
That day's dawn (Ano hino yoake)
The moon was going down (Tsuki ga shizu mi)
The sun was coming up (Taiyou to)
And then you were born (Omae ga umaneta)

Epona, Epona (Epona, Epona)
Come close (Sobanioide)
Together the two of us (Futari de ireba)
Won't be sad (Kanashikunankanai)
So I say (Dakara)
Epona (Epona)
Come here (Koko ni ite)
My song (Watashi no uta wa)
Listen to it (Kiiteite ne)

This is how I remember it (Koushiteiruto omoidasu)
Back in the day (Ano kudano koto)
I think that for your sake my mother (Omae no tameni kaasan ga)
Made this song (Yukuta kono uta)

Tu lu lu, tu lu lu
Tu lu lu lu lu
Together the two of us (Futari de ireba)
Won't be sad (Kanashi ku nankanai)

Tu lu lu, tu lu lu
Tu lu lu lu lu
Don't forget (Wasurenaidene)
This song (Kono uta)
This song (Kono uta)

The only downfall I can think of to this album is that Malon sounds a little too old--but certainly nothing that'd cause it to lose any stars. I highly, highly recommend adding this CD to your collection. You'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars better than the sum.......2004-06-20

This is an excellent live piece from eraldo bernocchi and bill laswell, with all the people listed above. This has way more of a jamming dub feel to it than the studio cut. The recording is really nice but not as nice as the tabla beat science live piece but better than the nicky scopelitis ecstacis live. The last song also has gnawa musicians of morroco. This is the best guitar ive ever heard from bernocchi. 5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, near ambient solo electronic trumpet........2005-03-31

Toshinori Kondo is not a name that I was familiar with before picking us this recording, but the Tzadik website description sounded intriguing, and given that most Tzadik releases are of extraordinarily high quality, I thought I'd give "Fukyo" a try. One of the better ideas I've had certainly.

It's tough to evaluate Kondo in sort of atypical terms of a trumpet player, as he buries his sound below electronics-- there's at least some mild processing on the horn usually, and he uses echoes and loop pretty readily. Note this record is a solo trumpet performance, typically a loop is set up providing a rhythm track and Kondo solos on top of that. The results are startling. While its tough to hear his tone (though it sounds rather breathy, almost like Tom Harrell can get), his technique is superb-- he's clearly exhausting a range of sounds out of his horn, from scratch sounds to clear tones, I can't fault his technique at all.

Perhaps more interesting is that for what it says it is, a solo electronic trumpet record, its really quite engaging. Without a rhythm section, its quite easy to meander, to make this into a shriek-fest, or to cause a loss of interest, but with a relative lack of notes (Kondo appears very patient in his playing and lets ideas come to him-- one of my complaints often with horn players typically considered in the avant-garde is that many rush phrases/notes out far too fast), this album is almost ambient in its quality and full of breathtaking moments and beautiful songs.

This is a record worth taking a chance on, maybe not if you're looking for firey playing, but if you enjoy atmospheric and ambient performance, its superb. I know I was pleasantly surprised with how good this one was.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Wait to Get it! Asking for Christmas!.......2006-09-03

I am definetly asking for this for christmas, and as for the eurodance lover, in a way, I can kind of understand not liking the music. I really like Majora's Mask Music, and the zelda music i dont like is from Ocarina of time, such as the "Shop" music, and "Lost Woods". So, I would probably say something similar to the Ocarina of Time Soundtrack. Though some Zelda music so far we have found "annoying", I cant wait to hear if Twilight Princess Music will be "annoying" as well.

5 out of 5 stars The soundtracks of The legend of Zelda keep on comin' !!!!.......2006-03-19

I love this soundtrack! It has every single song from the freakn' game! Some only run through once, some run through twice. 2 great discs of Majora's mask music! GO LINK^^

4 out of 5 stars Be warned: the marketplace sellers sell pirated CDs.......2004-09-22

Think $20 for the full Majora's Mask soundtrack is too great? It is. The marketplace sellers are selling illegit Taiwanese pirated soundtracks. The authentic Japanese release is unfortunately a rarity, and highly priced. If you look at the pirated product and the featured Amazon picture of the original album closely, you'll see that there are differences, like the catalogue number at the upper left corner. The same soundtrack has also received an official Nintendo promotional release in the US, with different packaging and English track listing, but all the same music.

What is here is kind of a mixed back. Majora's Mask contains a lot of Ocarina of Time's music, but the new material improves upon Ocarina's score, crammed onto one CD. Majora's Mask consists of captivating ambient tracks, heart-pounding battle compositions and some really atmospheric songs like the ethereal, hypnotic Last Day. Zelda fans are also in for a treat, as the Zora band's rearrangements of the classic Zelda compositions from the series' earlier iterations have been included on the album. Tracks like the original Zelda's dungeon theme still prove their strength in the arrangements.

There is still the sense of cramming too much into too little space, with many great tracks being too short. Also, all the little jingles and sound effects really disrupt the listening experience. I am slightly torn on whether to award the soundtrack 3 or 4 stars: the short track lengths and the constant jingles are really bad enough to make me consider dropping that fourth star. Altogether, I think that the good outweighs the bad, and Majora's stirring compositions have enough credence to keep the fourth star. After all, you can leave the jingles out from your playlist, and what is left is of high quality. Nevertheless, be wary: the authentic Japanese release will not come cheap. With Nintendo's official US release you might have luck finding it used, though.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry to say this but I don't like it AT ALL !!!.......2003-08-01

No, you are not dreaming. Yes, you have read properly. This is a 1-star rating, and it's written "Sorry to say this but I don't like it AT ALL !!!" : this tells EVERYTHING. Please don't think that everyone in the world likes that music, this is NOT true : there is ONE person in the world who doesn't like that at all. Even more than this, I CAN'T STAND that [PLEASE READ THIS : I don't want to put down Zelda games. I like them and I think they are nice, but the music is something that I hate]. I wonder something : does everyone really like it ? Maybe yes, but there is something I think : some of them like it JUST because it comes from Zelda games, I'm sure about this. And sorry to say this, but I hate it EVEN if I like the games, I'm not like some of the others.
IMPORTANT : Don't let this review make you hesitate to buy this CD or not, this is NOT what I want to do. You have the right to like this music and to buy this CD. The only thing I want is to make everyone understand that I really hate this, because some people think that everyone like this and anyone who says he doesn't like that is not telling the truth, and this is false. There can be some people (like me, and I'm sure I'm one of those rare people :-/) who really doesn't like this.
I hope you have understood this. Now you can do something else if you want.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars fascinating.......2005-06-02

The idea of this album is fascinating. The music is both interesting and relaxing at the same time, Kondo and Laswell shaping their ambient dub style music brilliantly around His Holliness' words. The only reason I would really give it only 4 stars is that at times it is very difficult to understand His Holliness. I had to listen to the disc a few times through very closely to get some of the finer nuances of his speech. Still the disc is interesting and definitly worth a listen, especially if you have interest in life, space, death, or Bill Laswell.

4 out of 5 stars Dalai Lama Speaks.......2001-11-18

I didn't know anything about this album when I bought it. I was hoping that this was an album of Dalai Lama chanting, but it is in fact a series of short talks on Life, Space, and Death.

I still like the album, though. If you have heard Bill Laswell's treatment of William Burroughs (on Material's The Road to the Western Lands, for example) then you will be quite familiar with the style of this disc. It includes spoken word layered over a background of Laswell's guitar and keyboard and Tochinori Kondo's trumpet and electronics.

This album is produced by meta productions found at metastation.com. The cd is about 35 minutes long.

      Album Description

Hagoromo is a one-act opera based on Zeami's (1363-1443) classical Japanese Noh play, which in turn is based upon a much earlier myth.

      The plot is:

a Fisherman finds (hanging from a tree-branch) the Hagoromo (the magical feather-mantle) of a female Tennin (Angel). The Angel demands the return of the Hagoromo, for without it, she can not fly back to heaven The Fisherman at first refuses to return the mantle, but agrees to do so if the Angel will dance for him, as he has never seen dance. She agrees, and with the return of the mantle, dances as she is flying to heaven, disappearing like a mountain slowly being hidden in the mist. Kondo's setting was written in 1994. In this version the Fisherman is sung by a Mezzo-Soprano. In addition, there is a Narratress (female Speaker), and a Solo Flute is on-stage throughout (almost as if one of the actors). The stage version includes a Silent Dancer, as the Angel. The work is scored for a small orchestra of Flute, Oboe, 2 Clarinets, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion (1 Player on Marimba and Vibraphone), Piano, and Strings, plus a small Female Chorus which! sits in the orchestra. Robert Wilson was the stage director of the premiere.

The libretto, prepared by the composer, consists of only the core parts of Zeami's original text. In Kondo's setting, the visual and aural are separated, and despite the mezzo, narrator and dancer each having a specific visual appearance, their aural aspect does not always coincide with their visual appearance, and therefore the mezzo-soprano and narrator each perform double aural roles. Thus, the mezzo-soprano (who is visually the fisherman) sings both the fisherman's text, as well as that of the angel. The narrator declaims the spoken parts of both the angel and the fisherman, while the silent dancer (visually the angel) neither sings or speaks.

      3 out of 5 stars Kondo rocking.......2005-11-05

While not as powerful as "Brain War" that was to follow some time later in 1991 , this is still a good album that reveals Kondo's personal style in playing trumpet and accentuates on the strong punk-jazz idiom that will culminate later .Three and a half star material , actually.
