If you've read any of the speculation surrounding Awfully Deep, you'll be aware that this is the down album from beleaguered Brit-Jamaican rapper Roots Manuva, a troubled work where he battles with the twin demons of depression and mental illness. Luckily, hard times can't entirely keep a good man like Rodney Smith down: barely two minutes into the bashed-up dub-hop of "Mind 2 Motion," he's already exhorting his audience to "Swing your pants!/ Swing your skirt!/ Shake away the hurt!" in an effort to keep the black dog from his door.
And truly, this is a long dark night of the soul: on the excellent "Colossal Insight," Smith turns to God to save his sanity; on pitch-black soul number "The Falling," he's lost in an apocalyptic reverie, fantasizing about smuggling hand-grenades onto an airplane. But luckily, Smith is agreeably incapable of presenting his predicament without moments of dark levity: see the title track, which recalls a stint at a mental hospital populated by "crooked doctors and kinky nurses." A man who dispatches the Reaper with a nudge and a wink, Roots Manuva remains one of British hip-hop's most potent forces. --Louis Pattison
Album Description
Limited to 10,000, includes a bonus mix CD of career highlights and rare tracks.
The triumphant return of Roots Manuva, the trailblazer in what has become a steady flow of UK hip-hop to charm the world over. Delivering 51 minutes of self-produced, dub-wise ingenuity, Awfully Deep is his most realized lyrical record to date, with rousing rhythms, and a barrage of bass. On tour with M.I.A. of Arular fame.

Your pants will thank you.......2006-04-24
This is the only Music I have heard by this fine gentleman other than that which appears on the Gorillaz Demon Days. It is brilliantly produced with mostly catchy beats which fluctuate from contemporary dancehall reaggae style to massive attack sounding brit-hop. The smart lyrics reflect a political and social awareness that is often lacking in much of today's music. Some songs are more for the lyricists, so pay close attention to his words. All in all, this bouncy album will make your booty appreciate your ears.

Album Description
"Midnight Landing," is 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's second release on ROIR. Their first, entitled "Hillside Airstrip", was uniformly hailed by the music press. "Midnight Landing," at it's heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts, Motown and Stax) where a song was potentially written, learned, and recorded in one session, with the band playing live on one track and then being voiced on the second track, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos, some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation ("Chanting Nyabinghi", inspired by the African drumming style, is a creative departure and one of the best tracks they've ever cut) and you begin to get the picture.

Customer Reviews:
Good. Reggae. Album........2007-03-25
A very palatable combination of instrumental, rock-steady, roots, and dub reggae with a somewhat Euro feel to it (think early Steel Pulse perhaps). One star deducted for some spotty production values (a bit of harshness to the mix, with some distortion that might even be intentional, i don't know).
Midnight Landing.......2005-03-06
Absolutely no originality to this album. I purchased "No Bed of Roses" along with this album and it's much better (no wonder with Reggae ace Style Scott leading the project). The whole tiime I was listening to Midnight Landing I thought that perhaps there will be one song anyway that made the purchase worthwhile, and I had to wait until the very last song to think "yeah, maybe that one." There was no compeling instrumentals on this album either and I really wish they would quite trying to imitate Augustus Pablo with that melodica. I won't blame previous reviewers who liked the album because I already had it before reading my first review, but sorry you people should try listening to Isreal Vibration or Misty In Roots if you really want roots music. I hope I like John Brown's Body better because I was actually looking for their Spirits All Around album when I found this one. (not an internet purchase this time). Too bad I can't return this one.
Amazing.......2004-02-27
I was surprised that I had never heard of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's music because this album is quite good. Draws quite a close resemblance to South African Reggae. My favorite song is "Let the music hit"
Not as good as hillside airstrip.......2004-02-11
This new release is a let down compaired to their first album. The vocals are different and not as powerful. Althought they still have that strong and melodic rythem. I am still a huge fan but a little dissappointed
GOOD, BUT NOT HILLSIDE AIRSTRIP.......2004-01-16
For the second outing, the Plant came with a solid effort. They had nice riddims, but the grooves were deeper on the first album. It took a few listens this time for me to get into them, yet in the end they won me over. Still worthwhile.

When it's all said and done nobody i've heard can deliver the slick styling vocal and downright solid productions and grooves like RM can. "Alternatly Deep" is a wicked collection of tracks that spins through many thick grooves and beats driveing ahead with fantastic poems and choruses commentating the London mindset .A truly original entity in Hip Hop. Total Quality and innovation. Thanks Rodney!!!!!
alternately manuvadelic.......2006-03-25
roots is back again with his 2nd album in less than i year. this time he reveales to us his secret vault of unreleased mixes & alternate songs for the first time. #1 no love is a song from the too cold single album, sounding more like neo brand new second hand type of motion. i have now 5 different versions of seat yourself #2including the live from the forum version, the miami mix is probably the best version just bringin out more of the sounds. double draft #3 is a song that in 2004 roots put on his website for a download only track costing about 4 american dollars & was said to never be released, but good thing that changed cause in my opinoin is his best song ever, bringin a fearse funk beat to hip hop & soul, manuva tackticz. nobody's dancing #4 is the closest sound i think that roots manuva has gotten to sounding like similar to the gorillaz, but manuvadelic, just has the kinda 80's electro britpop sound to it. things we do #5 is the rarest of the singles songs only available on the rarest version of the colossal insight single, but this is a steller track very upbeat anthem style. check it remix #6 is also another song with several versions available, this version is more dub oriented, like pole though. get u high #7 is curently on the roots main page to hear right when you get on, its a new song from the awfully deep sessions, very classic roots sound & style. the 1 i wont even concider a remix is the Colossal Insight Jammer Mix #8, which is not really colossal insight because their is no same lyrics & beat, not even the usual chorus. mean st. #9 is another alternate from awfully deep, a very electronic autechre-ish beat mixed with eastern sounds from india (sitar & saranghi), 1 of the best ever. pep my game #10 is a roots flavored gangsta influinced # that will have all dem pepin ya, step ya game up (also alterately from awfully deep). this world is mine (plan b studio) was originally on the noodle pack for awfully deep, this version is all on its own making it almost brand new & completelly better. grown man is more a less a cool cat song, like goin on the town, bit a jazzy hip hop. i love awfully deep, but right now im alternating my levels of deep. so if you like any of roots albums this one will not dissapoint. also get the new coldcut album with true skool with roots mamuva. & check out rodney p's album the future, very similar to roots. cheers
Alternately Manuva.......2006-03-24
I have been an avid fan of Roots Manuva since I first heard him on Groove Armada's remix of his 'Next Type of Motion.' Loved his take on hip hop and proved on his prior albums that his style was original and equally enjoyable.
This album is no different. Roots brings his unique ability to combine sharp lyrics with well crafted beats which sometimes come off as quirky but always appropriate.
It's no wonder many producers and DJ's are collaborating with this man, as he continually proves to add something needed in today's over-hyped and over-played pop-hip hop scene. Be sure to check out his appearance on Coldcut's new album as well.
My personal fav's from this album are 'Nobody's Dancing' and 'Grown Man,' (Can't get enough of that sax!)

REAL country music, at last!.......2006-07-22
Texana has hit the nail on the head with this one. The songs are well written, the sound is superb, and it is real country music which has been lacking in the industry for a long time! Also, my children can listen to it when we are driving in the car, because they are good, clean songs.

Product Description
Catfish is back with a brand new disc, his tenth, right here at home on Fish Tail Records. This is one of his most fully-realized recordings to date. Tracks were laid down pure and live and nearly naked on three hot summer nights this August. Catfish sings, stomps, and plays seven different guitars; two acoustics and five new Nationals, including his two baritones and his exciting first appearance with the 12-string tricone. This album features Keith solo, and powerful duos with the "big bottom" stand-up bass of Marty Christensen on half the cuts. Songs come from deep down in the treasure trove, and include originals as well as songs re-invented from Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Leadbelly, Cannon's Jug Stompers, The Otis Brothers, Dock Boggs, Blind Willie Johnson, Skip James and much more.

Sorry Sizzla, this one is really weak.......2006-06-04
Mr. Kalonji must have run out of creative juices for this one. Actually, some songs are different, but there are not many that are good. The best song (they only great one?) is Be Strong. Buy it by itself and leave the rest. If you want a KILLER Sizzla album, get Da Real Thing or Black Woman and Child.
Magical music.......2006-05-04
For years sizzla has shown the world that he is a phenomenal artist and song writer. when i listened soul deep for the first time i couldnt sleep the whole night. i was so amazed at his lyrical genius. his thoughtful writing and melodic delivery is mind blowing, how does he do it?
Good to know(track 7 ) is the ultimate love song. i have listened that song more than one thousand times already. i urge all you sizzla fans to get this album. you are misssing a lot of great music if u dont have this cd. go get it. see for yourself. i am almost lost for words to explain the brilliance of the dada. peace out.
The best Sizzla album ever.......2006-04-23
I am a big Sizzla fan, and I have been diggin both Black Woman & Child and Da Real Thing for years. My problem with Sizzla has always been that most of his albums have too many songs, and there is little album feeling at all. With Soul Deep it feels like Sizzla has made a real album, it flows good, the songs have the same feeling, and it is so positive! Songs like Show Me, Good Morning and Girl Come See Me are some of the best songs he has ever made. Please make more album like this!!!!
Not Good.......2006-03-24
I love Sizzla, but this album has only a few hot ones. Not a good album......Far from Sizzla quality.
amazing albulm.......2006-01-25
this is a change from the normal revolutioniary political sizzla more of a r&bish type albulm but still an amzing effort from i'd say the best reggae artist alive

Polygram's "Funk Essentials" series told the history band by band: a two-CD set by Parliament, single-CD sets by Kool & the Gang, Cameo, the Bar-Kays and Con Funk Shun, plus an extra CD of odds and ends. Rhino's five-volume In Yo' Face: The History of Funk, by contrast, tells the story chronologically, from James Brown's 1970 "Sex Machine" to Zapp's 1980 "More Ounce to the Bounce." The Polygram approach gives you a more in-depth look at such key acts as Parliament and Kool & the Gang, but the Rhino strategy allows a broader overview. Rhino allows for the broadest possible definition of funk, including such questionable acts as Natalie Cole, George Duke, George McCrae, and the Dramatics. On the other hand, the series showcases such founding fathers as James Brown, Sly Stone, and the Isley Brothers, plus a dozen assorted P-Funk tracks. --Geoffrey Himes
