    4 out of 5 stars What's not to like?.......2007-07-06

I remember hearing the Scatman song when this album came out and paying no attention to it. It was cute and catchy, but I soon forgot about it. Well, here I am 10+ years later writing a review. I got the album recently, and I'm sorry I didn't get it sooner. This is pop music in the best sense of the word. The whole album is catchy, upbeat, and fun to listen to. I get the feeling the whole scat/dance beat combination was probably expected to yield only a novelty hit when Scatman John first recorded, but to his credit his talents proved appealing and the man sold millions worldwide. The album comes in at 48 minutes or so, and you'll enjoy listening to every single one.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent epitaph.......2003-01-05

I was in Japan when I heard of the death from cancer of Scatman John (Larkin). Sad news, as I felt he was about to be a big star.

I hope he was pleased with the finished album, as "Scatman's World" is very intoxicating, full of scat and very tuneful. The two singles, "Scatman" and "Scatman's World", are brilliant, but "Quiet Desperation", "Song Of Scotland", "Time" and "Only You", to name four, are just as good.

A mix of disco and jazz-influences, it's really pleasing to the ears and just a whole lot of fun.

    Good one Scat!

    5 out of 5 stars Another Smash.......2001-01-23

Re-released time and time again due to it's popularity. This album holds the world record for being sold in more countries than any other in 1995 and 1996. Five stars and kudos to the Scatman.

    4 out of 5 stars Scat Attack!!.......2000-12-07

Now scat may not be everyone's cup of tea (Heaven knows, I've spent many a wasted hour trying to persuade my friends to give it a go...), but in the Scatman, it seems, we find an easily approachable introduction.

Indeed, John's music incorporates elements of many popular genres: from the trusty disco beat, to dabblings with rap. Styles are blended expertly as the Scatman pushes forward and leaves others who have tried similar techniques barely touching cloth.

Equally, there are elements of more traditional jazz motifs inherent in the music. Even so, it is unlikely that you would ever see John's face on the front of any Jazz magazines you might find in your local newsagent (or indeed in any of the more specialised publications).

That the collectors' press has rarely made an attempt to truly log John's work may not be suprising. While it does creep away from the (often unwelcoming) scatological circles, the direction is undeniably Popwards, and this is where, I'm sure most will agree, Scatman finds most success.

If you liked the chart triumphs, 'Scatworld' and '(I'm a) Scatman', just wait until the Scatmeister really lets rip.

Be warned... this is a full on scat-fest that will hit you right between the eyes. And leave you gasping for more.

3 out of 5 stars Depends on your political attitude.......2005-02-05

John Larkin aka Scatman John suffered from stutter all his life. The way some people treated him, as well as general feeling of insecurity and uncertainty resulting from this condition were fundamental in shaping his songs. As a musician John had average to sub-average talents. Most of the songs, except the short, tuneful scattings, are a cross of rap and techno beat. Some 70% of the songs he just >talks <. That's not pretty original, if you ask me. The only real melody comes from the scatting thrills, wich had a great development potential, yet remain quite limited. Scatman songs aren't intended for pure musical entertainment. According to himself, his songs are all about politics. Simply put, he's got a message to tell - a message about oppression, prejudice, mockery, racism, ignorance and despair. The message was imbued with pop music as to easier reach the youth. Scatman targeted this way especially youths who suffered from low self esteem, rejection and hopelesness. "If Scatman can do it so can you", "if someone wins means somebody loose" and "Black man, white man, brown and yellow man - tell me about the colour of your soul" were the key examples of his views. It is here we find the real originality of Scatman. As long as you try getting the whole picture, a mixture of melody, lyrics and John's very own persona, then you'll understand what the whole thing really is about. Scatman was also original because his hits weren't about what some 90% of the songs really are - love, sex, sex and more sex. It's hard to make pop music without "love" thing in it. He's was all about politics. It's a nice and rare alternative to Britney's and Aguilera's "boob show". It makes you think. About life, about other people. Personally, I do not agree with some of Scatman's views, while still finding "Scatman's world" as something listeanble from time to time. Politically speaking.

    4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2003-04-10

I understand why som people think its [bad]... In my opinion it deserves a better reputation.

About half of the album is very good. The hit singles of course, but also the calm tunes like "Quiet desperation", "Live for the moment" & "Song of scatland" are superb. The "scat" is something absolutely unique and makes the album stand out in the crowd.
Truly there are some misteps. "Only you" is monotone, "Hello luie" is a trowaway track and "Mumbo Jambo" is completely unlistenable. "Game over jazz" starts out promising with a uptempo jazz beat that swings like hell but when this is replaced by the usual techno beat it all falls flat to the ground.

The good part of the album is still that good to make it worth listening forever, and it is both relaxing and makes you happy at one time.

Well. I never really knew Scatman but he was a really good guy. I knew he had stuttering problems when I first listened to his music and whoa... You can't tell he does. His music is wonderful, if you do not enjoy his music you have problems, because his music is WONDERFUL. If you're feeling down, or feeling up this music is perfect. Too bad he had to die to cancer, cya....
