Where would we (the listener and fan) be without Bear Family Records? This CD collection covers one of the earliest duets in country music. Johnnie and Jack took the early Country Music sounds of Frankie Miller and Hank Williams and combined it with a true mountain Bluegrass Sound; something that no other country performer has been able to do with such perfection. The smoothness of their voices combined with simple sincerity, followed the foundation that the Delmore Bros. created, and at the same time, created a basis for further duets such as the Louvins! So, if you enjoy true country music, you have to have this CD. There are 32 songs here, beginning with the earliest recordings, such as "Poison Love", and continue with early rockabilly-influenced "Oh Baby Mine" (a song the Statler Bros. would later make famous). There's also their 1958 release of "Stop The World and Let Me Off"....a song that Waylon would reintroduce to the world a decade later. As with all Bear Family releases, the sound is as good as it gets; a detailed booklet covering their history is also part of the package. If there was a way to rate this one more than 5 stars, I would not hesitate to do so. A++++++++++++++++

Johnnie & Jack -- Jack Anglin and Johnnie Wright, that is -- represented perhaps the commercial apex of old-fashioned hillbilly music -- an harmony sound with modest picking that remained largely unchanged over the decades, and still sounds ever-so-sweet today. Their partnership lasted from the early 1940s through 1963, when Anglin passed away, and Johnnie Wright pursued a successful solo career, as well as a lot of duo work with his wife, Kitty Wells.

This generously programmed disc replaces a larger Johnnie & Jack box set that's been out of print for some time now, boiling their best material down into a trim single-disc set that's accessible to fans of old-style country music... This disc passes chronologically through their hits, from 1949 to 1962, and gives a wonderful sense of how their style progressed. The one omission is of the disc full of country gospel that was included in the old box set... Since all the Johnnie & Jack material is hard to find, most country fans will probably be happy to hear more of their secular material... Still, it might be nice for the Bear Family folks to put the religious material out as a separate disc sometime... In the meantime, this is a wonderful album, well worth checking out!

(PS - I just wanted to correct a mistake in another customer review: Johnnie & Jack were not brothers... they met in the 1930s, and formed a full-time partnership in 1941. Before that Johnnie Wright had been singing in a group with Kitty Wells and her sisters...)

5 out of 5 stars Much needed collection.......2003-09-27

Bear Family's mammoth boxed sets are not for everybody. Hence when they released like a 200 cd boxed set on these guys, I thought to myself, "Self, I sure don't need that, why don't they just make a single disc set of their songs." Then years went by, and nothing. Then that big boxed set went out of print. Then nothing. Then King records released a 10 song sampling with nasty overdubbs and just blah.

Now what we have here is what I have been praying for. A single disc set of Johnnie and Jacks' greatest hits. And I bet it has already sold more copies than that boxed set. The booklet is once again worth the price of the cd itself, with all the recording infor and a biograhphy with rare pictures.

All the songs are original. All the songs sound like they were recorded yesterday!!! Some of the best duet vocals ever put to record are featured singing 32 great songs. Including their Decca Records hits they recorded in the latter days of their career.

Go ahead an get this, it will stay in your cd player for weeks on end.

Now start praying for a similar disc on Kitty Wells that will put all the current disc's available on her to shame.

I'm glad to see some of Johnnie and Jack's music getting back into print. This disc came after an even better 32-track disc from a Canadian label, Hongry Man Records, entitled "Ashes of Love." That one is a little harder to find than this Bear Family disc, and I bought them both, despite their having very similar track listings. (I almost think that Bear Family's disc is issued in response to the Hongry Man release!)

Needless to say, if you have any kind of affinity for close country harmony, hot steel guitar licks and solid country songwriting, this CD will spin your wheels big-time. J&J had one of the all-time greatest country songwriters, Jim Anglin, who was Jack's brother. J&J routinely put their names on songs that Jim by and large wrote... a common Nashville scenario, and it certainly was standard trade for Jim, who also sold songs to Roy Acuff and completely lost his songwriting credit as a result.

This disc spans a decade, and unfortunately the later pieces get a bit gimmicky. The finest ones are the earlier songs, such as the moving title track, "What About You?", "Poison Love," "Ashes of Love," "Down South In New Orleans," etc.

I wish Bear Family would reissue the old 6-CD box set. It was a dud, sales-wise, when issued a decade ago, but I think people would buy it if it were available today. In the meantime, this and the Hongry Man disc will certainly go a long way towards filling the void.

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley

Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

This is my ABSOLUTE favorite Gary P. recording & I have been a fan since the Jerry Jeff Walker days. The music is perfect for 2-step, swing and waltz, and the lyrics evoke sentimental memories of riding in the pick-up with granddad, and fond memories of cooking chili on the cooker in the backyard. My daughter started learning Spanish from "Gracias Por Esse". If you have ever set foot in Texas, you can't help but love this. The boy from Brownfield is the insufficiently appreciated "poet lariet" of the honky tonks.

I don't understand why any Sable didn't receive more radio play. Her voice is outstanding. I had the pleasure of hearing her sing Amazing Grace a cappella and I was mystified by the purity and power of her voice. Old Times' Sake is packed full of hits. Her remake of Love Come Down is great. No more is soulful. Just buy the CD and hear for yourself. I've had the CD since '94 and my husband and I still listen to it.
