5 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed!.......2007-07-10

I am a devoted Traffic fan and my love for their incredible music seems to grow stronger as time goes on. I saw the original Traffic trio perform in 1968 and still count it as one of the greatest of my live concert experiences ever. I have devoured all of the fantastic Traffic Remasters previously and Last Exit sounds as good or better than the others. I cranked up Shanghai in my car and was completely blown away by the perfection of writing, playing, singing and sound of this masterpiece. I wish there was more "hidden treasure" Traffic in the vault for future release but the fact that there probably isnt only makes the available jewels even that more precious.

4 out of 5 stars If you missed the exit the first time around, here it is once again.......2007-06-21

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

The record company's decision to release "Last Exit" a collection of previously unearthed Traffic studio and live tunes turned out to be an unexpected gift for all degrees of fans.

The collector that must have every note could never be disappointed with the assortment of sounds that seem all over the globe and cohesive at the same time. Those that are somewhat into the band or looking for songs they heard on the radio will be happy with the inclusion of Shanghai Noodle Factory and Medicated Goo.

The album opens with a wonderful bit of psychedelia called "Just For You." The vocals pay homage to the fantastic British Invasion sound circa 64-67.

Shanghai Noodle Factory is one of the finest tunes that the band would leave us. Complex and catchy at the same time. There is a certain intensity in the delivery by Steve Winwood.

Something's Got A Hold Of My Toe lets the music do the talking. A clever riff and perfect improvisation makes this worthy of a repeat listen.

Withering Tree has Winwood using the vocal style that would be synonymous with Blind Faith. The words come from the heart and the instrumentation provides the perfect backdrop.

Medicated Goo complete with a bit of funk and lyrics that remain with you was a Album Rock radio song for numerous years (Well deserved).

Taking a page from Cream's playbook the record company mixed live and studio tracks for our pleasure. Recording at the Fillmore West in San Francisco you can feel part of the festivities with Feelin' Good and Blind Man. An opportunity to understand Traffic's gift to shine in and out of the recording studio.

If you missed the exit the first time around the present is as good as any to make up for lost time.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

4 out of 5 stars It's good for you.......2006-12-10

Dispite some of the negitive press it gets for being thrown together by the record company, this is actually pretty good. The opening song hasn't aged well but everything else is pretty great.Shanghai Noodle Factory, Withering Tree and Medicated Goo shows Traffic as about as good as they get. Now about the live performances, these get ragged on quite a bit, however the new remastered version they've never sounded cleaner. The quality stems for how they were recorded-basic 2 track with no being able to fix it in the mix. The performances are all top notch and of songs that are not currently available elsewhere. Sure I wish Chris Wood was louder in the mix and Stevie Winwood's organ wasn't turned up quite so loud. Feelin' Good is wonderful and full of emotion. Blind Man shows how great they were at taking a blues tune and turning it into something special. You'd never guess that they didn't write these two tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Traffic Report.......2006-05-06

Let's begin at the beginning. Steve Winwood is a total talent and a prodigy. You can rate him as a composer, bandleader, musical innovator, guitarist, organist, and especially singer and he comes out on top in every category. In rock that's almost unknown. This blather about Traffic's second album being their best because of the dynamic tension between Dave Mason and Winwood is eyewash. Mason is a folky annoyance.

When Winwood, still a teen back then, stepped up with Spencer Davis it was clear there was a new sheriff in town. The first Traffic album is amazing. When Last Exit came out, the third, nobody knew it wasn't their last. What about the complaints that Last Exit is a dog's breakfast, odds and ends tossed together? So what? On the LP, one side was live, the other was studio. Big deal, not exactly uncommon.

Now, the songs. Just For You - throwaway fluff from Dave Mason, fortunately the only one of the disk. Shanghai Noodle Factory - excellent funk, great to sing along, love those lyrics. Something's Got A Hold Of My Toe - this is the one every reviewer gets wrong. Rather than being some random snippet of tape lying around the studio it is 2:14 of driving rock guitar and back beat that really doesn't let go of your toe. Withering Tree - classic Winwood doing pretty as only he can. Medicated Goo - man, if you can't feel this one in your funky sneakers somebody gave you a soul-ectomy.

Then the big finish, Feelin' Good and Blind Man, 18-minutes of Traffic live at the Fillmore West. Sound quality is admittedly low but this shortcoming is vastly overshadowed by the performance, absolutely the best live Traffic ever. What Winwood does to Feelin' Good is simply beyond belief, he turns it inside out and puts a brand on it. As to Blind Man, that's the blues, big, bad, and beautiful. Just a fantastic CD. That's it from the Traffic-copter, now back to the studio.

4 out of 5 stars Thankfully, NOT Traffic's Last Exit.......2004-11-03

Traffic's third album, "Last Exit," was originally intended to be the group's final album (hence the title), as Traffic leaders Dave Mason & Steve Winwood were splitting up over creative differences at the time, and because of it, both men decided to put Traffic out to pasture. Thankfully, this did not happen, as Winwood, flautist/saxophonist Chris Wood and drummer Jim Capaldi unexpectedly revived Traffic with their 1970 classic, "John Barleycorn Must Die" (but that's another review). In the meantime, "Last Exit" is a great odds-and-sods Traffic album, containing several rare singles like the lighthearted "Shanghai Noodle Factory" and the groovy "Medicated Goo," and a pair of barnburning, jamming live tracks (recorded at the Fillmore West) in the form of "Feelin' Good" and "Blind Man." "Last Exit" is an excellent album that no Traffic fan should do without.

Let's get the inevitable comparison out of the way: like the Postal Service, the Junior Boys craft a wan indie electro-pop variation on blue-eyed soul. But in contrast to Ben Gibbard's romantic yearning, Junior Boys singer Jeremy Greenspan's voice emerges from the depths of a post-traumatic chill, emanating a disappointment too laconic to accurately be called sadness. "High Come Down" could be Darryl Hall produced by Timbaland, but only in an alternate universe where neither man was interested in selling records or monopolizing your attention--the beats shuffle of their own accord rather than skittering playfully, and Greenspan sings as though there's a sleeping baby in the next room. The group's new-wave influences are similarly easy to spot, yet they appear only as silhouettes, drained of the original artists' egotism. Over time, the Junior Boys' teasing reserve proves itself as engaging as most other artists' forceful intensity. --Keith Harris

4 out of 5 stars Brotzmann et al play the blues.......2006-04-02

Some time ago I heard about a group called Last Exit comprised of two of my favorite musicians - Peter Brotzmann and Sonny Sharrock. Brotzmann, who I think is sometimes unfairly maligned as playing extreme for the sake of extremism, is actually a dynamic player, sometime darkly melodic but certainly capable of fluidly bringing things to the level of Pharoah Sanders or Albert Ayler at their most intense. And then Sonny Sharrock, seemingly the perfect foil for Brotzmann, is hands-down the best Hendrix-inspired free jazz guitarist that I know of. So I've basically wnated to hear this for years.

Now that this is finally rereleased on CD by Atavistic and I actually get to hear it, did this live up to my very high expectations? To a degree. This would not be the place that I'd start with either Brotzmann or Sharrock. Everyone, Bill Laswell and Shannon Jackson included, sound like they are having a lot of fun at this concert, and of course "fun" is a relative term. I'm imagining that the German beer might have been freely available backstage. I don't see someone getting into this who doesn't have at least some appreciation for punk or heavy rock music, and I definitely hear a blues feel to several of the tunes, which I like a lot. For a live recording, the sound quality is excellent, and if nothing else this gives me hope that the other five or so Last Exit records will soon also be released on CD.

4 out of 5 stars Intense.......2005-10-13

Last Exit is renowned as one of the first "No-Wave" improvisational units to have emerged in the 1980s Downtown New York noise scene. An equitable blend of free jazz energy and can-do punk attitude, Last Exit was in their time the most fearsome of electric jazz ensembles and still a high water mark of the milieu. A mind-melting combination of talents, the group featured a who's-who of potential sonic mayhem.

Producer and electric bassist Bill Laswell joined forces with former harmolodic drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson to form the backbone of perhaps one of the most acerbic front-lines conceived; free jazz maverick guitarist Sonny Sharrock and certifiable madman Peter Brötzmann on tenor sax made for a pair that was more often out of control than in. Never performers to utilize written compositions, all of the quartet's performances were fully improvised.

"Köln" has been out-of-print for the last decade and is now part of Atavistic's Unheard Music Series reissue program. The disc benefits by being recorded through a 16 track mixer. Audience noise is perceptible occasionally but is buried so far in the mix that one might assume this is a studio record, albeit one with a somewhat thin sound.

The album opens with its longest cut, "Hard School," launching at a sub-atomic level with the entire band already in full manic flight: pounding drums, screaming tenor sax, waves of throbbing bass, and skronked-out guitar distortion. Peeling away the layers to reveal a tenor sax and drum duet no less intense than the previous blow-out, the quartet eventually regroups for another collective improvisation. Jackson sounds like the motivating factor here and keeps the endless momentum going with his pulsating fury. Brötzmann drops out later in the tune, allowing the strings a chance to trade off, with Sharrock taking out the tune with his trademarked "Blues from Hell"-styled slide guitar meltdown.

One of Jackson's typically primitive grunting blues lines opens "Brain Damage" before Brötzmann's train wreck tenor solo leads the rest of the band into sonic oblivion. And on and on it goes. "Last Call" briefly locks into an actual groove with a funky percolating shuffle and Laswell's bright ring-toned bass, with Sharrock's churning guitar shards sporadically scattered about, only to have the entire piece detonate with Brötzmann's bull in a china shop entrance.

Typical of their discography, this is not an album for the faint of heart. Last Exit laid the foundation for today's noise improv scene, from John Zorn's Naked City and Painkiller projects in the 1990s to current rock cross-over acts like Fantomas, the Ruins, and Melt-Banana. Without this foursome there would be no benchmark to measure one's success (or intensity) against. Last Exit was responsible for some of the most visceral improvised music of its time and still sounds unchallenged two decades on.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting score for a disturbing film.......2006-11-10

In the hands of a master, music comes to embody themes in films, and make connections between viewers and characters. This score does that job beautifully, and is exquisite, moody and achingly poignant. Mark Knopfler's music is always intelligent, understated and touches the emotions.
This must have been a difficult film to score -- horrifying, in a way, yet Knopfler does not succumb to the horror, nor nobilize it, he reaches the heights of empathy for the human condition. They're all victims.
This is a worthwhile listen.

5 out of 5 stars Knopfler's Finest Film Score!.......2000-07-17

In addition to adeptly supporting this interesting but difficult film ,this score stands by itself as exquisite, always interesting music. It is for me the most enduringly appealing soundtrack I have heard. The main themes begin very simply, as Knopfler's Dire Straits rock songs often are. But here, in a mostly lush orchestral setting, each theme evolves into a far more complex sequence, with wonderful leitmotifs throughout. Instrumentation from contrasting idioms are joined here seamlessly. More than any of his other work, this score reflects Mark Knopfler's formal academic musical training -- likely a surprise for listeners who only know him as a fine rock composer and quitarist with Dire Straits. The production and sound quality is excellent. (My 2nd choice for most beautiful film score ever would be Cinema Paradiso. Knopfler's Local Hero ranks high as well.)

5 out of 5 stars 1989's best soundtrack album... a good movie too........1999-05-26

I like all about this record too.Once again a very good soundtrack album, whith very brilliant songs whith smart lyrics like always, and always terrific guitarwork by M.K, and the others are also doing great. It fits the movie very well.. To get the right kind of slower ,calm music ,and faster more intensive music into the right scene, and situiations , in the movie. The brilliant timing. A little bit blues mostly rockmusic. and the pockets front side is looking a little bit like the movie "Welcome to Sarajevo". they can thank this album/film for that. goodbye../a CD-guy.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic, eccentric jazz.......2006-09-30

Music publicists tend to extrapolate when they characterize a band for critics. The press release that came with this album described the band as a "genre-confounding nine piece band from Louisville with influences as diverse as Sun Ra, Coltrane to Frank Zappa." Now come on--what old-fart music professional like me wouldn't be intrigued by such a description?

Surprisingly, the press release for the new Liberation Prophecy album Last Exit Angel is pretty on target about the band, which does borrow heavily from avant-garde jazz, the Mothers of Invention and mixes it with a little free-spirited R&B. And the results are more than gratifying.

Liberation Prophecy is probably best known as the group where multi-Grammy winner Norah Jones had her humble beginnings. On Last Exit Angel, Jones enthusiastically contributes an extraordinary bit of soulful balladry on the albums third track "Lonely Lament". The rest of the album swings wildly with horn sections that sound like they're following arrangements from a tipsy Ornette Coleman on "Armed Ant War" to a Latin-oriented sound a la Tito Puente cast against a carnival backdrop in the instrumental bridge in "Passage" to wondrously beatific vocal wizardry provided by Amber Estes on "Strange New Figurine", "Dreams" and the title track, with a spoken word intro provided by Jacob Duncan doing a great Zappa impression. It's all gloriously mad-- a number of hits of musical acid immediately followed by sips of a fine, rare wine.

The patient leading this asylum is Jacob Duncan, playing alto sax, flute, clarinet, and toy piano. Duncan's arrangements are playfully tongue-in-cheek at times but when he gets serious, there some extremely intense work to be found here. The horn section is completed by tenor saxman Aaron Kinman, Chris Fortner's trombone, and Josh Toppass on baritone sax. They are supported ably by the rhythm provided by Jason Tiemann on drums and percussion, Todd Hildreth's piano, Hammond B-3 and occasional accordion work, Sonny Stephens on double bass and electric bass and Craig Wagner's guitars. They all make this complex blend of styles sound easy to pull off. That the album works so well is a tribute to their musical chops.

Last Exit Angel accomplishes what few albums can anymore. It actually lives up to the distorted representations of the bands publicists and goes far beyond their effusive treatment. The album both entices and enchants, and even makes a cranky critic like me believe in the magic of original music again.

4 out of 5 stars Why is this album so overlooked?.......2004-03-02

The reason to own this album is the first song *Just For You*, one of the best English psychedelic songs to be found.

Written and sung by Traffic truant Dave Mason, it's an upbeat, mostly acoustic tune w/ tabla, flute and nicely echoed vocals by Mason, *Just for You* is a lost ethereal psyche-pop masterpiece.

*Shanghai Noodle Factory* is another must-hear, definitely one of Steve Winwood's premier compositions. The instumental *Something Got Ahold of My Toe* is a rollicking, engaging guitar riff that grabs your attention and keeps it. *Withering Tree* is a lovely, mournful, again, mostly acoustic number. Rounding off this excellent quintet of songs is *Medicated Goo*. Funny, silly, whimsical, it can also be heard live on Traffic's 'Welcome to the Canteen' album. But THIS is the superior version - it's performed at a well-paced mid-tempo speed, whereas the 'Canteen' recording is performed at a faster pace, so you miss some of the words in the vocal.

In it's original vinyl release, Side A was studio, Side B, live. I give 'Last Exit' 4 stars because Side A is a MUST!!! Although I can do without the remaining pair of live songs, that doesn't mean they're completely dispensable.

*Feelin' Good* sounds poorly recorded - it's overwhelmed by the volume of Winwood's organ for the most part. But when he kicks in with his organ solo, my hairs stand on end. *Blind Man*, the final song, does little for me and is the album's low point.

Why *Just for You* never made it as a Traffic staple, I'll never understand. It's not on any Traffic compilation I've come across, so to hear it (which you should), you'll just have to pick up *Last Exit*. But don't worry - it offers more than enough wonderful music to make your purchase a worthy one.

    5 out of 5 stars Dee's Best CD Ever.......2003-11-06

This is not a single, it's a full CD of live performances of some of Dee's best songs. These acoustic versions are the true Dee Carstensen. She has one of the most powerful voices you'll ever hear, her harp is unique & amazing, her back up musicians are the best, and there's a duet on here that's out of this world. A live audience must give her energy, because the power of this CD is 10 times as strong as the other albums recorded in the studio. If you can't see Dee live, this is the next best thing.

4 out of 5 stars Way to go, Ronald!!.............2007-06-29

Ronald Shannon Jackson is the star of this "free jazz" show, and not because of his two gravelly vocal appearances. The man's drumming holds it all together, presaging the changes in tempo for the improvisors. Mr. Brotzman (what a great name for a bass clarinet player) lays down some fine subterranean notes, and Sonny Sharrock noodles in on guitar, and of course we have the legendary Bill Laswell on bass. But Jackson is prominently heard throughout, moving nimbly from tempo to tempo.
Speaking of the vocals, these are done in fine compliment to the clarinet, growled more than sung. But, hey, I don't think we would have recognized song two as the eternal standard "Big Boss Man" without Ronald's one verse of lyrics! But, you won't buy this expecting some honey voiced crooner anyway, or even Jimmy Reed!!

3 out of 5 stars Mad world tribute is very nice -.......2006-12-08

I haven't heard this one, but I see bad reviews... so I wanted to recommend the Mad World string tribute to Pearl Jam. :) Have a nice day.

1 out of 5 stars With A Song Called "Flannel Rain" How Could You Go Wrong?.......2004-05-04

I remember watching Touring Band 2000 and thinking how cool it was that the band entered the stage to a string version of Baba by The Who... I thought, "I'd love to hear that kind of thing with PJ's music"... I bought this album despite what I thought was a really weak selection of songs... (nothing past Vitalogy and really odd choices)... and I'm seriously listening to it as I write... and it's comically bad...

If you've ever stopped and wondered why Stone doesn't flex his power and replace everyone in the band with a less than six stringed instrument... buy this record... it will make very clear that Pearl Jam is best heard with guitars and vocals and LOUD...

1 out of 5 stars Poor Choices, Poor Performance.......2003-06-30

I, for one, have always been open to hearing PJ's songs in a different light. This effort, however, falls just short of mediocre. The record company that made this must be udner the impression that PJ stopped making recrds after 1994's Vitalogy. Consequently, much of the band's best work, including songs that would be suited to adaptation as string pieces like Parting Ways, Off He Goes and Present Tense. The performances are satisfactory, but definitely not worth the money. Please, if you want PJ music w/ strings, get Binaural or one of the Seattle bootlegs (strings on parting ways).

    5 out of 5 stars 4 & 1/2 stars.......2003-06-07

I've been listening to this every so often (when I'm in the mood for something light and easy). When I ordered this, I new what to expect. As a PJ fan, I didn't expect it to be this huge orchestral rendition, or expect it to be like a Metallica tribute. It works perfectly.

Standouts on this album include Alive, Ederly Woman, Last Exit and Once. There isn't anything mind blowing here, but just a different take on Pearl Jam's music. For all the True PJ fans, I recommend this album.

Oh by the way, Flannel Rain is why it gets 4 & 1/2 stars. They could have done without this track.

1 out of 5 stars This Tribute [stinks].......2003-05-22

Well I bought this tribute CD because I am a big Pearl Jam fan and I wanted to hear what this was going to sound like. I was expecting it to be as good as the Metallica tribute by Apocalyptica (which was badass) but I was disapointed, I mean it just [stinks]. It sounds like a lot of noise with a violin imitating Vedder's vocal parts. Also, it turns out that this String Quartet recorded a whole bunch of tributes at the same time (REM, Rush, Alanis, Led Zeppelin) I guess they're just trying to jump on the "String Tribute" bandwagon that Apocalyptica created to earn some cash. If you are a big time Pearl Jam fan, do yourself a favor and DON'T buy this CD, I promise you will feel bad by hearing "The Section" (what the quartet calls itself) mutilate some very good songs.
