5 out of 5 stars Splendid Tunes for Great Times.......2004-12-29

Oh, my...it just turns my stomach to see that this WONDERFUL album hasn't been reviewed yet!!! Well, I'm honored to be the first, in that case. Early jazz fans, take note: BUY THIS ALBUM!!! Get it while you can - outside of Amazon, it can be a tough find, and oh, Lordie - it's a real keeper.

Rob Fisher and his Coffee Club Orchestra have caught the sound of the 1920's and 1930's, and most generously share it with us. The band members are marvelous, period instruments are incorporated, and the selected tunes are all gems. Oh, and Garrison Keillor treats us to his unique vocal talents in three of the pieces. What more could one ask for?

Standouts? Well, they all stand out, actually - but if I must... "How About Me" (a contagious Charleston, which, in its enthusiasm, belies its lyrics, not featured in this rendition), "Stampede" (a must-listen - it's too good even to describe), "You Took Advantage of Me" (wherein the wonderful Andy Stein, on violin, shines as only he can), "Doo Wacka Doo" (probably the best arrangement and performance of this novelty imaginable), and "Doin' the Frog". Every piece that accompanies these is just perfect, as well - not a lull in the album.

This album desperately needs more reviews, more testimonials about how great it really is. An absolute musical treasure - one that's obviously fallen through the cracks somehow. The roster of musicians and "without whoms", including jazz luminaries like Vince Giordano, Andy Stein and Arnie Kinsella should alone open one's eyes, and CD collection, to this great album. Buy it NOW, have a listen or two hundred, and tell Amazon what you think.

5 out of 5 stars Everything old is new again.......2006-01-03

This CD brings some old classics of the '20s up to date, with arrangements that retain the flavor of the past, yet provide refreshing sounds for the new listener
In my opinion, this CD represents a fine addition to any jazz or popular mussic collection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent recreation.......2005-03-22

If you enjoy the dance orchestras of the pre-1934 era, you will enjoy this faithful recreation of that style. Three of the tracks are wasted with the "vocalizing" by Garrison Keillor, but otherwise there are 18 good tracks of enjoyable music.

5 out of 5 stars Get Ready to Smile!.......2003-01-23

Unadulterated fun and a rousing good time! This music never fails to get me up and out and moving and, best of all, grinning from ear to ear. If you like the '20s and '30s, don't wait another minute to get this CD. If you have the slightest bit of imagination, you will see yourself in a racoon coat or a cloche hat and hear the rattle of a Model A. Get this! It's innocent, good fun!

4 out of 5 stars I'd rate it 5 except for Garrisson's singing.......2002-09-17

The music is upbeat and peppy -- and if you have a programmable CD player, get out the instruction manual and learn how to use it. That way you can automatically block out the wretched voice of Garrisson Keillor as he croaks along with the music on a few misgbegotten tracks on this otherwise wonderful CD.

Actually it is easier to just hit the skip button when his nasal whine starts to float into your ears.

Now I must admit, I hate his radio show and books, so bear in mind that if you like a Prairie Home Companion, you will dote on this CD, even the fingernails on slate tracks with old Gary's voice defiling them.

5 out of 5 stars Great 1920's style Jazz.......2001-02-14

If you are looking for an introduction to "Great Gastby" era Jazz, then this is a great cd. I would recommend to those of you who want that old "hot" sound, but with the sound quality of modern recording technology. If you are familiar with "A Prarie Home Companion," then you've probably heard these excellent musicians before. I believe they were Mr. Keillor's stage band a few years back.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Smashing Album.......2005-11-11

Any album that gives us Jason Graae singing "Smashing, New York Times" is worth having.

3 out of 5 stars Great singers, not so great music.......2001-12-26

I love hearing songs from forgotten and lost musicals, and I enjoyed Unsung Musicals I, but I was disappointed with this one. "Lawyers" is easily the best song on the CD. Most of the other songs are ballads, and dull ones at that. (Admittedly, I am not a big ballad fan.) Looks like Bruce Kimmel's song selection process kind of flattened out here. Why, for example, did they choose a ballad from Foxy, when by all accounts the songs originally sung by Bert Lahr in that show were a lot of fun? On the other hand, the singers are very respectable and always worth listening to. Glory Crampton definitely needs more leading roles! My advice is to listen to the song snippets first, to determine if these songs are your thing.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-15

This is the second fine CD in the series of three. These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Lawyers" (from A Broadway Musical), "Everything in the World" (The Yearling), "Smashing New York Times" (also A Broadway Musical), "Run Cinderella" (Foxy), and "Phantom of the Opera" (title song from the Rupert Holmes show). There was a third CD in this series. If its not longer available, they should reissue it. Its on a par with the other two in the series.

4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Musical Fans.......2000-03-25

The Unsung Musicals albums are a treasure for those who are "mega-fans" of musical theatre. All the songs share the tragic fate of being in a musical that just never made it on the Great White Way.

Some of the songs are somewhat cloying, such as "One Promise Come True." However, there are also some real gems, such as "Lawyers," which has some clever rhymes and a catchy tune. You also get the added bonus of hearing some great singers perform such as Sally Mayes, Rebecca Luker and Davis Gaines.

Overall, this recording is great for both its entertainment and its historical value.

    4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2006-11-05

Dinah is in good voice here for Dinah. But I've always thought of her as having pitch problems and those seem to be prevalent here, although I think she does well with this material. And her version of "The Hungry Years" makes this well worth your money. I will say in her behalf that the the product here is not really campy or even to be considered of the "so bad it's great" category.

For the most part her easy take on these songs works well, but there's still that nagging pitch problem.

    5 out of 5 stars Hidden treasurer.......2006-05-28

Capitol was the only record company who knew what to do with Dinah in the album era (her RCA LPs are models of non-concepts, uncreative covers and flat recording techniques). Each of her Capitol albums was a gem. Now comes out of nowhere this
almost unknown Capitol project that repositions Dinah from standards to contemporary music. The ingenious opening track starts as a 1930ish recording of the subversive
"Paradise" (a romantic lyric that was actually about sexual climax and thusly was banned from many radio stations in the '30s and '40s) and morphs into a disco number. From there on Dinah takes one then-current pop hit after another and interprets each with fresh insight. I first heard this C.D. driving in a pouring rain in St. Louis and in a way the album was like that storm, as Dinah blows straight through song after song with nary a hesitation, bringing a refreshing breeze to each. She is up to every lyric and melody in totally modern terms, including Paul Simon's sly
"Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover." Dinah just never seemed to grow old, stale or out-of-touch an artist. If this had been packaged and promoted commercially when it was recorded, it would have proven a hit.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music from a fine performer!.......2006-04-04

I have loved Dinah Shore ever since I grew up watching her "Dinah!" program and I always wished she had recorded music in the 1970s during the time she was doing her talk show. Well, she actually did an album for Capitol in 1976 that remained unreleased until now...and it was well worth the wait. Her lovely voice and pleasing personality come through on classics from the era and her versions of "I Write the Songs," "Do You know Where You're Going To" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" give the originals a run for their money. Other highlights include a beautiful version of John Denver's "Fly Away" and a fun take on Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover." But the best moment of this excellent disc happens on the first track. "Paradise" starts off sounding like an old scratchy 78 and segues into a slow and sexy dance groove. Remarkably, that one song brings Dinah from her 1940s period right smack into the disco era...much like Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" stepping out from black & white into color. It's brilliant and worth the price of the CD alone!
