Ever-reigning Queen of Sopranos.......2007-05-28

Listening through these two discs, one thought kept leaping up to mind: will ever there be another soprano as versatile and accomplished as Lucia Popp? Died in 1994 at the early age of 54, the operatic world hadn't really mourned her enough.
People are still lingering on Maria Callas, the 'star' soprano with all her glamour and legendary life could offer.
Real listeners, however, could not give up the memory of Lucia Popp's terrific artistry and almost supernatural voice.
Her Rusalka, her Solveig, her Susanna, Zerlina, Despina in the da Ponte/Mozart trio, her terrific Queen of the Night (unsurpassed by ANY subsequent sopranos up till now), and ALSO her Pamina in the same opera. In any language you ask her to sing, and she excelled. I marvel at the Letter Scene in Eugene Onegin - only if Lucia had the chance to perform the whole opera during her short life! The joy, the expectation, the emotional tribulations, so vividly captured in girlish and pure timbre. No one will ever beat her; not even Fleming and Netrebko.
"Weird and wonderful" - that's what Elisabeth Schwarzkopf said of Lucia Popp's singing. We today would modify it to 'wonderful and unsurpassable'.
This 2-CD set is an absolute must have, even if you have never heard of Lucia Popp before.

This is a wonderful album showcasing the very best of Lucia Popp (as the title suggests). Her voice was absolutely beautiful. She could sing the slavic languages like no one else. Her version of Dvorak's Song to the Moon is unbeatable. I dare anyone to find a better performance! Also, the song from Die Zauberflute -Ah Ich fuls (sp?) is outstanding. I've yet to hear a better version. Her diction was fantastic and while she wasn't the highest soprano around - she knew what worked for her voice. This is album is a keeper!

Lucy: The Reigning Queen of Opera.......2004-07-12

Lucia Popp is one of the best sopranos to ever grace the operatic/classical voice stage. This CD compilation shows her progression through lyric Handel to lyric and dramatic Mozart (her Der Holle Rache from Magic Flute is unrivaled) to tender art song and operetta literature. The first disc also showcases her adeptness with 20th Century literature as well as the ability to step out of the traditional four languages of opera. Any avid music fan MUST have this CD compilation.

Komputize Me.......2000-12-11

Die Letzel Rache is a great techno/komputer fusion, which has received very little recognition. The German lyrics (komputized) are great and mix really well with the music itself. It is unfortunate that so few people have heard of this CD and I myself only ran across it on accident. I will mention, however, that this CD might not be for everyone. The things that are holding this CD back from greatness are that it is in German (which dissuades the Americans who cannot understand the lyrics) and because it is very different. The music does not always flow but uses jerks and stops to actually create a mood for the music. I enjoyed this CD and for any of you interested in komputer or techno I highly recommend this CD be warned, however, some people will not like it. I recommend Ich Bin Ein Komputer if you need a sample song.

Unique, fascinating, instructive, rare........2005-10-18

I gave this issue 5 stars for its intrepidity, interest and technical excellence.

14 rare Parlophones recorded by Fritzi JOKL (1895-1974) between 1924 AND 1928, with, to fill out the CD, 4 even rarer disks by Maria GERHART (1896-1975).

Both were Viennese Hochkoloratur types, with all that that implies in high-placed purity, daintily floated Kopftöne and slightly sharp intonation.

Jokl made her debut, shortly before the Great War, at the Frankfurt Opera, where she stayed for five years. She was first given all the boy rôles, but soon took over Rosina, Cherubino, Oscar, Urbain, Blöndchen and Sophie. Her Sophie was particularly admired. Within a short time she became one of the most promising young singers in Germany. She spent two seasons at the Opera of Darmstadt and two at the Volksoper Berlin, where she appeared as Konstanze, Norina and Violetta. She then became a special favorite of the audience in Cologne. A guest appearance took her to Covent Garden, where she sang Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos, then Zerbinetta (as an understudy to Maria Ivogün). She was then invited to the Munich, where she gained a remarkable success as Zerbinetta, the performance conducted by the composer himself. She was immediately engaged for the Munich Festival, marking up a series of triumphs. Under Knappertsbusch she sang Susanna and Despina. Her repertory further included Gilda, Nedda, Olympia, Marzelline and Rosalinde. She took part in a revival of Flotow's rarely performed Alessandro Stradella. Karl Böhm was her conductor in many performances.

In 1932 Fritzi Jokl was invited by Otto Klemperer to join the Kroll Oper in Berlin, but political changes then set in. Klemperer had to leave and the soprano was not allowed to begin her engagement. A few special theatres continued to be allowed to accept Jewish artists and audiences (Jüdischer Kulturbund), but later even this was halted and in 1936 Jokl was forced to leave Germany. She emigrated to the United States and there was happily married to the author and journalist Jack Siegel, but, at 40+, had little chance to continue her singing career. At the Metropolitan, Fritzi Jokl's rôles were the property of Lily Pons and Bidú Sayão, and the management was not willing to take her under contract. Her voice was thereafter heard only in private circles, as well as from these very elusive Parlophones now re-mastered by Preiser.

Gerhart also had an appreciable, mostly Viennese career, and then taught at the Vienna academy for many years.

All this items are excellent, perhaps the most interesting historically being Gerhart's two-sided rendition of the original 1912 version of Zerbinetta's hair-raising rondò. It, like the Weber sides, shows a well-schooled, old-fashioned central-European artist of lovely, silvery tone. Gerhart's delicate, elegiac Caro nome is a classic of her school.

Jokl is more theatrical and her voice more interesting, both timbrally and musically. She was an elegant Mozart singer of the post-Mahler sort, and has the right style for Meyerbeer: not as brilliant as a Tetrazzini or a Kurtz, but rhythmically piquant and full of charm. She holds her own as a contemporary of Ivogün and Hüni-Mihatschek.

I was delighted to have these souvenirs of such lovely singers. Gone, but, thanks to Preiser, not wholly forgotten.

Fabulous!.......2001-03-11

This is an amazing collection of arias from the early 1900s through the 1930s (there is one 1942 cut). The sound transfers, made from pristine 78 records, are excellent, especially considering the age of the recordings. This CD is a splendid overview of the outstanding artists of their day, and while many of them are no longer (opera) household names, their singing is first rate. Not only would this be a great CD for an opera history buff, it is also excellent for someone just learning about opera and wanting to hear opera legends. The price for 5 CDs, each over an hour's worth of listening, is a steal.

Hughes Cuenod and Hildegard Rossl-Magdan sing Bach lieder........2003-05-09

Hughes Cuenod was not your average tenor. He had a thin uneartly sounding voice and was more of a weak baritone than a tenor. But his incredible ability to express himself and bring life to a song makes every one of his recordings worth their price.
Cuenod is still alive (as far as I know) at 101 years old. His longevity (he still sung professionally at 93) is only surpassed by his repertoire and personality.
This recording of some well known, but mostly lesser known Bach religious lieder music was done with Hughes singing the tenor lieder and Hildegard Rossl-Majdon singing the alto lieder. As you probably know already, German lieder is usually a solo voice accompanied by a keyboard instrument. In this case a harpsicord as well as a cello. Cuenod sings about 60% of the selections and over three cds that makes for alot of singing.
The tunes are simple, but highly emotional and soothing. Hildegard (who is very experienced with Bach's lieder) has a great alto voice and is highly expressive, but Cuenod surely is the star of this recording with his delicate and sensitive intonation and timbre.
As far as I can understand, the recording was made in 1954 with Westminster Records. It includes, on the third cd, a wonderful 13 minute conversation with Hughes about his life and music. The conversation is in french so you'll have to get your french friends to translate.
The booklet unfortunately doesn't contain the libretto for all the lieder (would've been nice), and doesn't even provide an english translation for the titles. There is a nice 4 page description of Cuenod's life and musical experiences in French and English.
The sound quality was very good for 1954. This recording was a joy to listen to. Its too bad that it is out of print!

A good introduction to Bach's little-known hymns.......2000-05-30

When a provincial German music director (Georg Christian Schemilli) decided to compile a hymnbook for distribution at Easter fairs throughout upper Germany in 1735, he turned to many composers to contribute melodic settings of the 954 hymn texts presented. Johann Sebastien Bach provided at least 68 of these melodies, at least 59 of which were thus presented in the compiled hymnbook. The wonderful recording company CPO has here compiled all but 12 of these hymns composed by Bach, and presents them on two very well-filled CD's--at a wonderful price. Baroque specialist Bob van Asperen provides the accompaniment on harpsichord and organ. He plays with admirable restraint, and underlines the melodic beauties of these songs with obvious love for Bach's music. Cellist Wouter Moeller provides an ample ground-bass. Soprano Barbara Schlick and baritone Klaus Mertens, while not the most prodigiously-gifted vocalists, fill Bach's melodies with appropriate gestures at liturgical meaning. Schlick, in particular, is very effective in No. 48, "Jesu, meines Herzens Freud" (BMV 473, CD2 track 9). Mertens uses his straight tone and typical incisiveness to great effect in the organ accompanied "Nur mein Jesus ist mein Leben." Musically, the songs are surprisingly rewarding. The influence of Schutz and the late German Renaissance are firmly displayed throughout, but many of the songs distinctly bear the mark of Bach's melodic and harmonic inspiration. Even in these small works, Bach achieves remarkable moments of fervour and genuinely-felt religious devotion. As it is, a better introduction to these miniature masterworks is hardly imaginable. A great bargain, and a must-have for all true lovers of Bach's sacred works.

MADAME IVOGUN,BRILLIANT COLORATURA SOPRANO.......2000-07-28

Although Nimbus's Ivogun cd has far better sound,there are some rare and precious items on this disc that any lover of coloratura singing cannot afford to be without. The "Caro Nome" for instance,which Mme. Ivogun sings in german,is firmly,yet delicately executed,the tone brilliant and sweet,the fioriture lacy and flawless. It is meditatively treated. In an entirely different vein,Mme. Ivogun conveys well the rage and fury of the Queen of the Night,the smallness of her voice notwithstanding. She soars to the high F's in "Der Holle Rache" and in "O Zittre Niche displays a regal authority in the largo section and a virtuoso's technical assurance in the allegro. Ivogun's solos from Mozart's Seraglio are also a standout,with authority of manner compensating for any lack of weight. Ivogun's runs and roulades are perfectly even,and she tosses them at the listener with defiance and authority. This is a brilliant disc,a souvenir of another age,when singers could really sing. It is also interesting to note that Mme. Ivogun was the teacher of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. BUY THIS!
