That was FAST!.......2007-06-13
I was so surprised how quick I got this order....Good JOB!
oldschool must have.......2006-02-11
If you came up in the mid 80's, I mean like in high school or something like that then you will know what I am talking about. This album and the series bring back so many memories. It was when rap was "happy" and the beats are what you paid attention to and you could actually rap the whole song with the MC. These tracks are oldschool and most younger people won't get the lyric's or beats. If you are over thirty then you have to get these and if you are younger you might learn some history.
Fantastic Beginnings of Hip Hop.......2005-10-21
A previous poster mad a really cruel review about this compilation series, and I've figured him all out. This individual is basically going on Amazon, and sampling soundbytes of certain albums, and just criticizing them just because he can. If you don't believe me, just check this person's listing of reviews. Every review is a "1 Star" Review, from Nine Inch Nails to The Killers. Please disregard his review, and listen to someone who actually "buys" and "listens" to music, and who was actually there during the beginnings of hip-hop. Many of these songs are still played at house parties, on mixshows, tv shows, and movies. The cool thing is that many jams of this era's hip hop was very lighthearted, fun, non-violent, and even downright silly, BUT they got the butts on the dancefloor, and that's what has been missing in hip hop and rap. This whole series I would recommend to anyone who is interested in historical origins of genres and sub-genres, or just want to relive a more innocent time. But like those kids on Reading Rainbow would say, "Don't Take MY Word For It"
More cheesy disco rap.......2005-08-21
Ice-T is the only good rapper on here, The rest is lameo stupid disco schlock. This is posuer rap. im talking total losers. Stupid kiddie beats make this sound like an episode of Mr Rogers

Great disk.......2007-06-14
"80's" compendiums usually are code for, "KROQ playlist". This one's no different, and thank heaven! As in, Heaven 17, of course, and while there are a couple fillers on here (the Spanish version of "Hey, Mickey" is a waste of space), it's a great disc.
Do Not Buy For T'Pau! (Review for Liv in Obliv Vol 2).......2006-03-08
For some reason this review seems to show up on Living In Oblivion Vol 1 (and so do others). This is a review of the Vol. 2 disc.
Hmm. The tracks selected for this CD are kind of interesting, a bit more obscure (to American ears, anyway) than most 80's collections. The only real mega-hit, T'Pau's 1987 smash "Heart and Soul," is butchered by the low fidelity of the track--a problem plauging this CD in its entirety to an extent, but the T'Pau track is by far the worst. It sounds almost like it's mono, but I'm not sure.
Still, a few of the more obscure features make this an interesting compilation. DJ's doing 80s stuff might want to throw on the Spanish language version of Toni Basil's "Mickey" (provided along with the regular version)--it's a Hoot! Power Station's cover of the T-Rex early '70's hit "Get It On (Bang A Gong)" is one I recall from the 80's--though unequal to the original, it is worth playing from time to time. Some of the other well-known tracks by the Vapors, Motels, Thompson Twins, Missing Persons, Culture Club, Katrina & the Waves, Thomas Dolby, Naked Eyes, Talk Talk, as well as the English version of Toni Basil's Mickey, are best acquired elsewhere where the fidelity is better.
There are some real wacko tracks on this CD not generally available elsewhere. Most notable is "88 Lines About 44 Women" by the Nails (who??), a definitely R-rated discussion, of, apparently, the "artist's" female conquests. It amuses a little (if you like crude off-color sex puns, that is) but does not overwhelm either, and it is not an under-17 track (which is a shame since the humor in is is more like under 13). The Fun Boy Three with Bananarama track "It ain't what you do," is another obscurity that, probably, deserves its fate. The remaining songs I haven't mentioned I will leave to Rest In Peace, as they are all vintage forgettables except for the strangely out of place "Neverending Story," which surely is available elsewhere with better fidelity.
In sum, maybe buy used, but for God's sake don't buy this mediocre effort new.
(For a different, very interesting perspective on this CD, read "Atlanta Native's" post.)
Half awesome!.......2006-02-13
The truth is, with 80's collections, the more songs it has that you want, the better it is. This "Living In Oblivion" series is no different. I find "Volume 5" to be the best, others may not. Like most of them though, I really love half of what's here, the rest is still ok. My favorites are the excellent "Get It On (bang a gong)", "Lay Your Hands On Me", "Heart And Soul", and "The Jam Was Moving". Others I'd call classic are "Running Up That Hill", "Destination Unknown", and the infamous "Never Ending Story". If you can find this for a few bucks, it's well worth the trip down memory lane.
Awesome! Non-typical "hits" from the 80's .......2005-11-30
The Living In Oblivion series of CD compilations does something that many similar compilations do NOT do: they give us some great variety of "hits".
There is no doubt that "Mickey" by Toni Basil was a huge hit. There's also no doubt that "Our Lips are Sealed" was a break out hit for the Go Go's, but the Funboy Three version wasn't. But what about "Living in a Box"? It only hit the Billboard top 100 at #89 in 1987. So why is it here? Why are a large number of these songs? They're not top 10 hits, right?
Wrong!
I'm sick to death of so many compilations relying on top 40 hits from the 80's. The U.S. music tastes are typically very different from those of Europe. Just because a song doesn't make the U.S. Billboard top 40 doesn't mean that it isn't a hit in other countries. And although I'm an American, my music tastes have always run more in line with those of Europe.
I'm delighted that the Living in Oblivion series (and the Pop and Wave series) have incorporated a variety of hits from the U.S. and Europe.
I also like that some of the more obscure groups and their songs are available on these compilations. There are several songs on these albums that never were released on CD (as they hadn't come into being at the time of the groups' albums initial releases), so albums such as these are the only place where you can find these hits. The Boys Don't Cry song "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" hit the Billboard charts at #12 in 1986, but the group disappeared soon thereafter. Then all of a sudden a dance version of that same song came out in the early 2000's and rocketed up the dance charts.
Don't be misled, the Living in Oblivion series is one of the absolutely best series for a variety of music from the 80's. If you want to hear run of the mill, top 40 only hits from the 80's, well, then you'll just have to look elsewhere.
Also, the liner notes and pictures of the groups included in the jewel box are really clever. You get to find out what the chart position was for the songs in the compilation and see what the groups looked like at the time of the song's release. My only issue with these liner notes is that the author of them seems to be disparaging the very music which these albums are espousing. Apparently many believe that the music from the 80's was vacuous and devoid of emotion. One need only listen to the song "The Promise" by the group "When in Rome" (Living in Oblivioon Volume 5) to know that such a statement is false. While that group only had this one hit and then faded into obscurity, "The Promise" made the Billboard Top 100 at #11 and the Billboard Dance Chart at #1.
Anyway... I can't recommend this album and its entire series any more! It's simply awesome! Before believing those who would disparage this series of albums, please check the Billboard charts and you'll see that these songs were in fact hits.
GET IT!
Great for the true new wave fans.......2005-08-13
I don't understand why people keep reviewing the Living in Oblivion series and whining that these aren't the songs they heard on the radio. There are plenty of compilations out there with all the 80s radio hits. This series has a lot of the great songs that didn't get much radio play. I knew all but one song on this disc because in the 80s I was hanging out at postpunk/new wave clubs and listening to college radio. For anyone who truly loves new wave/club music from the 80s, this is a great collection.

Gotta Have This Album.......2004-12-31
Once again we get a treat with this installment of the Best Of House Music series. This time from a New York/New Jersey point of view. On this compilation there only 2 Chicago artists + 1 Chicago producer. The other tracks are performed, produced or remixed by people in the NY/NJ circle (which is the great equalizer since club and radio DJs in Chicago were playing alot of NY/NJ tracks along with their home-grown tracks). The ones that really do it to me are "Work It To The Bone" and "Shake Your Body"--these are my "Jackin'" tracks. For the more melodic/spiritual side of the House I also go for "Love Is The Message" and "If You Should Need A Friend". Let me make a small confession concerning the latter song: I have an old mix, from 1989, recorded from a college radio station that has that song in it. I eventually found out who that was when I bought the album. Now, Blaze is one of the most acclaimed House groups, and they're still going strong!
Listening to this album takes you to the time when House Music was everywhere in Chicago and everywhere it was it was phat!
Im sure the New Yorkers and the New Jersey heads are feeling what I'm saying...if you are shouts out to you--you're represented really well on this album!!!

And now, because you haven't heard these songs enough... Boy, what would life be like if somehow you got to own the licensing rights to this stuff? These are the songs that shake the rafters of every arena in America, getting crowds rowdy and psyched up while simultaneously getting people to look very foolish on JumboTron screens. There was a time when these urgent, driving classics could have been judged on their own momentum-filled merits, but now they're simply the soundtrack to the most mundane keggers. It's also a good dating test--if your date is enjoying the tunes, time to move on--and a way to get in touch with your inner frat boy. Fine sound. --Marc Greilsamer

Sports songs new & old are winners!.......2006-02-25
The songs on this disc are often heard at sporting venues. The one thing that has bothered me about this series are the cheesy transitions from one song to the next. Crowds cheering, etc. does nothing to enhance my listening enjoyment. In fact, it detracts from it some because I want to her clean intros to the songs. Other than that, this disc is great! The songs cover a wide range of eras and relate well to a variety of sports.

Fabulous within its genre.......1998-05-17
This is bringing the sounds of the stadium right into your own home, for better or worse and minus the beer vendors (unfortunately). However, it's great to clean your house to, perfect for slam-dunk-the-wastebasket accompanient, and the absolute best thing to listen to before you run your first marathon. I'm surprised, yet pleased, to recommend it!

OL' SCHOOL LIKE IT SHOULD BE.......2003-02-24
If you are a fan of the old clubs like Paradise Garage(Larry Levan) and Zanzibar(Tony Humphries) you will enjoy this cd.
The artist and songs that were picked for this cd, were definitely on target. This cd is a must have to your club or house collection.
The music captures the NY Garage scene at its best!.......1999-09-07
At first glance, I felt compelled to diss the album on the low budget cover graphics, but surpirsingly the music best captures the New York Garage scene at its best. This unmixed compilation is a Who's Who of Garage. All the top names represent including Strafe, Jomanda and Colonel Abrams to the Bassement Boys, the Peech Boys and Serious Intention! Strafe SETS IT OFF on track 1. This track rocked many a club, and is a pre-requisite for your MGA (Masters Degree in Garage Appreciation). Yet another classic YOU'RE THE ONE FOR ME by D Train.
"You're the one for me . . . Just don't know What you did to me But I'm not the same I'm not the sa-ame . . ."
Serious Intention also appear on track three with their Garage anthem, YOU DON"T KNOW. Ever wonder where the Jungle Brothers got their samples for Girl I'll House You? Check track 4 CAN YOU PARTY by Royal House, a boogie down Bronx anthem. Other top tracks: MUSIC IS THE ANSWER (Colonel Abrahms) and DON'T MAKE ME WAIT by the NYC Peech Boys. Check for the clapping in the echo chamber intro.

This is a must!.......1999-11-23
Any true fan of 80's music must purchase this CD! World Party, Bronski Beat, Romeo Void... These were the artists of my formative years. They bring back such memories! Yes, some of the songs are the cliche 80's tracks, but the hard to find song more than make up for the tired songs!
If you like 80's rock then.......1999-11-10
Read the line above. Two words "get it," but I don't my mom has it.

I Admit, I Kinda Like It.......2003-12-29
This is volume two of the techno compilation "Back To The Future 80s". This follow up isn't too different from the first. For one thing, there are some artists on here that were on volume one (Charles Feelgood, DJ Irene & George Centeno, DJ Cer, Static Revenger, etc). Though volume two only has twelve tracks while the first one has nineteen.
The new version of "New Years Day" is done by David Grund. It's the longest track on the album at 7:14. I'm so gonna play this song on New Years Day. Charles Feelgood returns with his cover-up of Herbie Hancock's "Rock It". Charles Feelgood was in volume one with "Safety Dance". DJ Irene & George Centeno return with the song "Blue Monday". Their version sounds like something played at an extreme sports event. This isn't the first covep up of "Blue Monday" I've heard. I have Orgy's version from 1999. DJ Irene & George Centeno were in volume one with their remaster of "Cars". My favorite track on here is How Hard & Sanz One's "Crazy Train". Oddly enough, that version still brought in the spirit of Ozzy Osbourne's version. I love it. DJ Cer's "Jam On It" is the shortest track on the album at 2:12. Cer's version had a nice 80s feel to it. Another odd but nice thing on the disc. DJ Cer was also in volume one with "I.O.U.". Roland Richards' "Electric Avenue" and Organica's "Burning Down The House" are pretty ordinary. I'm not a magnet to that. I enjoy Pleasurehead's "Final Countdown". No reason at all I like it. Static Revenger returns with "What Boys Like". SR did a cover up of Berlin's "Sex (I'm A...)" and was in volume one. Chris The Greek's "Africa" in here. Since I mentioned it, I hope the people in Africa are having a nice Kwanzaa. Another familiar face here is Mijangos. Mijangos was in volume one with "Don't You Want Me". Now Mijangos is back with "Promises" and lastly, Kid Icarus' "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" is in this album as well. The last three are more ordinary club mixes. Just not too turned on by it.
Why didn't the people who compiled this up and in "Love Bites" by QED? That was an 80s song by Def Leppard. I love QED's version. It got to be played on US radio. This is like the 80s remake of the year. I still like the CD.
Not worth the purchase.......2003-10-26
I'll make this short and sweet. The first compilation was way better than this one. The first song(A cover of U2's "New Years Day") isn't all that bad, I'd probably listen to it a few times before getting sick of it. Otherwise, the rest of the tracks really have nothing to offer. Also, DJ Irene's on this. DJ Irene is absolutely terrible, and anything she touches ends up turning into crap, such as her rendition of Blue Monday!

Takes me back to yesterday.......2006-11-08
Living in OHIO the songs on this compilation are known more by beat, melodies, and the lyrics. You may not the know the artists though except for 60/70's soul siren Barbara Mason whose cult favorite "Another Man" is featured here. The song is much sampled most recently on Biggie Smalls 1997 "Another" on his "LIFE AFTER DEATH" release.
On friday nights the radio stations would feature different djs playing the mix records to get you ready to go out and party! "Thanks to you" by Sinnamon and "You aint really down" by Status IV are two that would be familiar to some no matter what coast you are living on. Fantays's gospel tinged post disco era "You're too late" gets the toes tapping and fingers snapping. And how can one forget Shades of Love's "Keep in touch (Body to Body) which is a underground Ballroom favorite.
With this release you cant go wrong....The ultimate club mix of 'You aint really down" would have been more desired but this is essential 80's dance, a mix between disco and freestyle it will leave you longing for the days of yesteryear when the djs determined what was hot and a hit.
THE FIRST REVIEWER IS JOKING, RIGHT?? RIGHT??.......2006-01-07
Maybe it's our friend's geographical location, but this compilation offers a view into the underground club sene that is hard to find on CD. Think about clubs like Paradise Garage, The Loft and Better Days -- but I bet the first reviewer knows nothing about those clubs.
Getting "Thanks To You", "You Ain't Really Down" and "Keep In Touch (Body To Body)" on one CD is worth the price alone. I admit all of the songs are not hard-core Garage classics (otherwise, I might have given this CD five stars), but this is still a hot CD to get...
Ignore the Last Review, This One's a Winner!.......2005-08-03
This compilation offers a splendid take on the 80's underground dance scene. If you're looking for mainstream, radio hits, these tracks may not appeal to you. At the Paradise Garage, Better Days, The Clubhouse,Catacombs, and other urban after hours clubs on the East Coast, these songs were real crowd pleasers and garner "classic" status today. The album is worth it's price simply for having the rare, yet highly popular and danceable "You're Too Late" by Fantasy. Also, Sinnamon's "Thanks to You" is still influencing a lot of the electronica and techno cuts that come out today with its computer generated synth line and dubbed out vocals. Lastly, Everyone Here Must Party" and "Please Don't Go" are peak hour party pumpers. If you feel like dancing and love the underground, Mid-Atlantic States, after hours, urban, 80's sound, this one is definitely a winner!
Excellent Compilation, First Reviewer obviously in a Cave!.......2005-02-25
Just another testament that 80's L.A. club life could not hold a candle to NY or Miami!! These songs would definitely be obscure on the West Coast (except maybe gay bars or in SF) but they were staple on the East Coast.
WHAT IS THIS GUY TALKING ABOUT?.......2004-04-24
The above poster is obviously NOT a dance music head, if he only recognized 2 songs!!! You gotta be kidding me!!!

Customer Reviews:
If you've got a broad musical taste, you will like it!.......2004-01-07
This CD has a little bit of everything from Disco type sound ("If you let me stay") to Jazz ("How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?") with some good "Oldies" ("Respect", "What A Fool Believes", and "Come Together", which is performed by Aerosmith) "Heart of Rock 'N Roll" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" are some great Rock songs, and pop is represented well with "Vision of Love", "Save the Best For Last", "Constant Craving", "One Moment in Time", and "Tears in Heaven".
I HATED the way that Clapton performed "Tears in Heaven" on this CD. I love that song, but he did something horrible to it and it sounds terrible. That is my one and only complaint about the CD. Overall a good collection and one that I will play for a long time.
Decent.......2000-05-29
For what it is, this cd isn't a bad collection. As it features good performances from (duh) Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, etc. However, it also features some subpar songs and artists. So, overall, although it's nice for what it is, it's not something worth owning.
