It's been a long five years between releases, but Kim Richey has clearly spent the time wisely, perfecting these 10 new songs. She clearly enjoys working with different cowriters, since eight tunesmiths--including such contemporaries as Joan Osborne and Mindy Smith--collaborate with her on this superb set. Producer Giles Martin (George's son, producer of the Beatles' Love) injects a somewhat more pop-oriented approach that works wonderfully with this introspective and intricately crafted material. "Jack and Jill" colors in the missing backstory of the children's ditty with sumptuous yet frilly harpsichord, flute, kazoo, and whistling. The title track recalls a snappy Suzanne Vega, adding multi-instrumentalist Billy Mowbray's sax, mellotron, and vibes, while "Not a Love Like This," the Osborne co-write, brings reverbed guitar and a bit of retro to arguably the album's finest and most robust melody. "Pretty Picture," the only tune composed solely by the singer, is a tender, intimate love ballad sung with heartbreaking sensitivity. Richey is in sparkling voice throughout, sounding inspired by her band, the production, and especially the magnificent tunes. The laid-back, layered sound on "Another Day" and the sprightly "I Will Follow" perfectly capture the nuances of their lyrics with subtlety and class, two aspects of the singer's style that have never been compromised. There's not a weak track here, and the sharp sequencing makes this an album that ebbs and flows with Kim Richey's richly articulated vision. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
Newly signed to Vanguard Records, Kim Richey is set to release her first collection of new music in five years on July 10th. Chinese Boxes was produced by Giles Martin and recorded in London at Eastcote Studios and Air Studios Lyndhurst. Giles Martin's most recent project was The Beatles "Love" soundtrack, which he collaborated on with his father, Sir George Martin.
Chinese Boxes is a collection of 10 beautifully crafted soulful songs. The first single "Jack and Jill" (and lead track) gives the couple in the nursery rhyme a bit of a back-story - and the listener a hint of the discoveries to come. The title track tries to define a mysterious person before giving way to "Drift", a poignant love song (co-written with Mindy Smith). "The Absence of Your Company" showcases Richey's vocal vulnerability in a sparse instrumental setting while the cautionary "Another Day" highlights Kim's stunning sense of melody. The album-closing "Pretty Picture", is an intimate ballad that speaks honestly of true love.
Fans and critics alike have long awaited new music from the critically appraised singer/songwriter, whose other albums include Kim Richey (1995), Bitter Sweet (1997), Glimmer (1999), Rise (2002), and The Collection (2004).

Kim's Golden Vibes.......2007-07-19
"This is not the time for regrets, we have seen the worst and the best", croons Kim Richey in her new CD Chinese Boxes. We haven't ever really seen the worst from Kim Richey, although I was just a tiny bit disappointed in her fourth release, Rise. That one minor flaw in her astounding catalogue of breathtaking music is easily forgiven and forgotten now.
Chinese Boxes is a lyrical pleasure with just enough of her country roots restored to please even her older fans like me. While all the songs on this CD are outstanding, there are several that actually send chills down my spine when I hear her beautiful voice, filled with hope and despair and joy and sadness. Kim's voice is a soothing, supple embrace for the soul.
This CD is HIGHLY recommended.
More of the same = Excellence again and again........2007-07-12
There are truly more "performers" out there than one might care to shake a proverbial stick at. But there are fewer and fewer Artists making great music these days. People who can truly craft a song, and then produce it to such an extent that the final product significantly moves you. Kim Richey does just that.
Although I think it may be a disservice to even remotely classify her efforts as pop. In the conventional sense of the word anyway.
Her music is deep enough to create it's own mini genre. You'll probably find yourself, as I often do, craving Kim Richey music. There aren't a great deal of people in my music collection I can truly say that about. Sting comes to mind... maybe Peter Gabriel or Sheryl Crow. Where their production sense and musicianship, coupled with their songwriting and performances, allow you to keep the CD continuously running. Music always interesting, with solid melody, that leads you somewhere satisfying.
Every one of her albums is consistent from start to finish, and this one 's no different (Yogi Berra anyone?).
And how many albums do you own, where you really enjoy 90% or more of the music on that album? Two of the only things you'll ever find annoying about Kim Richey's music, is that there isn't enough of it, and you don't have as many people you can talk to about her material, because they're just simply not aware yet.
Worth the wait.......2007-07-12
Ever since I first heard Kim Richey a few years ago (on an episode of Angel), I've been collecting her CD's, delighting in each new discovery. Kim has a gorgeous voice and a talent for writing well-crafted lyrics and lovely melodies. Chinese Boxes is as good or better than any album so far, continuing on a path away from country and towards more of a pop sound (a journey she began in earnest with her 4th album, Rise). Kim is an immensely talented singer/songwriter, and Chinese Boxes is a wonderful addition to an already superb collection of work.
Poetic Masterpiece.......2007-07-11
For Kim Richey to not be a household name after all of the superb albums she has released over the last decade has got to be one of the music business's biggest mysteries. On her fifth studio album Chinese Boxes, she continues to make a simply beautiful album full of poetic lyric writing that breathes life into her highly emotive and real songs. Her voice has never sounded better either. From cover to cover, this album is simply a masterpiece. I hope this album finally catapults her to the rich allocades she deserves--out of the box and into the light.

Customer Reviews:
Quite good, but where's the middle eastern sounds?.......2006-03-29
This is a mellow, ambient chillout set, perfect for playing in the morning or late at night when you want some nice sounds in the background. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five, is because I was hoping for a little bit more of an Arabic or Middle Eastern feel to it, and personally it fell short of that. This disc set should be called "Chillout" instead of "Arabic Chillout" because the title is misleading. Sarah Brightman's Harem CD has more Middle Eastern sounds in it than this one does, but still the discs are good with some great beats, but very little Arabic in this, except for the titles of the songs and artists.
For the price this collection is actually really good........2005-10-06
This is a very laidback collection of Middle Eastern themed electronica and chill out. I can just put it on and listen to it or just have it as background music at home or at work. Not very repetitive or beat heavy but just very good and mellow. My favorite track on here is Moroccan Dance (Mix) by Rumi. I remember hearing this at the W Hotel lobby quite often recently and wanting to know who it was but couldn't find out and noone knew. Then when I purchased this set and found it on here I was quite happy to hear it again. It's a great track. Very mellow. Other tracks on here that are really good are Kafez by Nurai Lita, My Faith by Mantra, Spiritual Signs (Light Mix) by Tariq, Raqs Beledi by Al-Ghazali and You R the Light by Jawab-A-Shikwa. If you are at all into Middle Eastern themed Chill Out and Electronica then this collection is definitely worth it. Especially for the price!

Readhead in the Head.......2007-02-12
Not Manson's best work, but indispensable for completists. More of a fast technopunk sound (Atari Teenage Riot, even Rage Against the Machine) than the more atmospheric work post-Reznor collaboration. Evokes "Down in the Park" and choicecuts from Holywood (Burning Flag, King Kill 33, etc.). Younger listeners might be scared as this rivals live offerings from Alice Cooper and Kiss, which influence the record's sound. The accompanying DVD features a live performance of "Choklit Cows" (c. '92?), where Manson, the emerging frontman, shows some theatre tricks.
Somewhat released for money.......2006-05-16
You could say that Daisy released this thing for money, or you could say he released it so that fans could enjoy it. But in the long run, this is a CD solely for fanatics and is too short and/or boring. Only 10 songs? There is a whole list of songs to choose from that could have taken up the rest of the space. I really only like White knuckles and one of the other songs here. I have a rare bootleg/import thing that my friend found in Israel (of all places), titled Demos in my lunchbox vol. 1, and has 15 songs and more consistency then this. Why weren't the demos for Cake and Sodomy, Lunchbox, Intro/Misery Machine, included or the song Luci in the sky with demons?
The bonus DVD has barely any content what so ever and only contains live footage, and is overdubbed with music from the CD. (I admit it is cool to see Gidget Gein playing Bass in the band though.) Manson and Gacy had taken Daisy to court over this thing because he used Manson's artwork without permission, as a result there is a rare first edition (or whatever) with a different cover featuring drawings of the band members as well as a galley on the DVD, that were both removed shortly after the laws suit. So as a Manson fanatic, I picked this up as a collector's item and that's the only real reason you should either. This was supposed to be part 1 of a 2 CD set and because of the lawsuit I doubt that the second set will ever be released. Look on eBay and find the Demos in my lunchbox for a better collection of Early Manson Demos though.

Grab this one WHILE YOU CAN!.......2005-12-01
This came out in early 04. I quickly emailed the company to ask when Vol.2 was coming out. He told me it was on hold since "Brian Warner" (that's Marylin's real name, folks) was suing him for releasing these recordings withOUT his permission. (It was former guitarist Daisy who was behind this release.) I later saw on Manson official www site that this CD was being pulled. Too bad- this not only sounds like a rough blueprint for what was to follow ("American Family", "Superstar") but it is actually more accessible than most of their albums. Like a psudo-techno version of the Misfits crossed with Alice Cooper "Choklit Cows" would make a good into to Marylin's main body of work, especially "negative three" and "thrift".
You can see this is NOT availible directly through Amazon but via the "Marketplace" sellers. This is, at the moment, the ONLY way you'll be able to snag this incredible CD. Grab it now! (Here's hoping Vol.2- with "Lucy in the sky with DEMONS"- will get a release after all!)
YES!.......2005-11-29
This is the album to buy if you want GOOD QUALITY Spooky Kids sound! Period. Every song is great. It really shows how Manson evolved in his music...from this to Golden Age of Grotesque, evolved is the only word that fits. I can only complain about the DVD. It claims to have "raw" footage, but it is very obvious that the video itself is the only raw part, while the audio is obviously the studio track being dubbed over the video. Forgivable, though, because the songs on the CD are so good. BUY THIS ALBUM

Shiva Knows How to Do It!.......2004-10-16
Let me start off by saying I LOVE THIS CD! I found it in a CD shop in London and fell in love with it immediately. Perfect for yoga, meditation, or any day you need to just zone out, relax, and feel great. Being a Lawrence of Arabia fan, I loved the remix of the theme for the movie on it. This is just the kind of music I need after a stressful day.
