2 out of 5 stars Not for me..........2005-08-03

I know I'm totally going against the grain here, but I couldn't bring myself to really enjoy this album. I am very much a fan of electronic music, however this album seems to embody many of the things I do not like about the genre. I will not go so far as to say Blue Amazon sucks, because they don't. There is tons of potential that I hear. The problem is this album doesn't go further than that.

When I say tons of potential what I'm saying is Javalin has a lot of tight beats and killer grooves. Those where the sort of things that attracted me to the group. Well that and hearing AND THEN THE RAIN FALLS on the local college station. The band has some great hooks. The problem is what they do with them. Or rather what they don't do.

The whole album is one big mix, which I tend to not like. I mean if I wanted a continuous mix I would get a DJ Cd or just go to the club. I want artists albums to be separate tracks so I can have an individual song with no awkward cutoffs in the beginning or end. That's one strike, at least in my opinion. Mileage varies if you like the "mix" theme. Even though the grooves and hooks are great I notice that's all you get. The songs don't really go anywhere at all besides just playing that groove. That's another strike. Finally the songs are just too long considering there isn't much meat in them. More than one track is around the 10 minute mark, and considering the song is just a single groove those tracks feel like they just go on and on (not in a good way) listening to those awesome rhythms start to get tedious. So that's three strikes, which takes them out for me.

If Blue Amazon would condense their songs to about half the length and/or add some more variety to the music this would be a truly awesome album. But that didn't happen. So I can't endorse it. I'll probably get flack for this, but I have to be honest. For those of you who want more than just cool grooves to dance to this album is not going to cut it. If you are happy with just great grooves (especially in the dance floor where this album shines) then don't mind me.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Progressive House.......2004-07-21

I heard "4 Seasons, and "No Other Love" on John Digweed's Renaissance Mix Collection Vol. 2, and had to hear more. Blue Amazon have created a classic progressive house sound that perfectly combines a thumping bass line and 4/4 beat with perfectly arranged melodies and ethereal female vocals. The results are fantastic! I can't think of a low point on the whole album. Every track is great. Some songs are a little long, which can be a little trying on patience, but true fans of this style of music will understand the larger format required to flesh out these epics. Bottomline, this is an essential pick-up for fans of progressive house music.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, influential, yet unheralded trance album.......2003-12-05

Despite all of the awesome progressive/melodic trance/house music that has come out in the 6-7 years since this album was published, it still sounds fresh. I still play this CD regularly, and even work some of these tracks into my trance sets when I DJ. This is remarkable since most trance music has a half-life of 6 months. Some of the tracks are lengthy (10-12 min) but the melodic beats will swirl you into a blissful trance.

The tracks "And Then the Rain Falls" and "No Other Love" were club hits when they came out in 1996ish, and have several excellent remixes not available on this CD. The other tracks, especially "Searchin'" and "The Runner" build slowly to a fever pitch with perfectly timed vocals, adding a human touch to the album. I only wish they had included the full version of "Paradise Regime", as it is a truly beautiful trance track. The 2 minutes you do get on the CD is still good, though.

Overall, trance fans today will love this CD, and newcomers to the genere could listen to this and gain an appreciation for what trance really is and should be. Unfortunately, Blue Amazon has fallen off the face of the earth, even though I've never heard even so much as a mediocre track from them. If you can get your hands on this, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Most Impressive Album.......2001-05-18

This is one of my top five CDs of all time. The whole CD is ine continous piece of music. Melodic with a pounding beat. Unlike most CDs that have great first one or two tracks,(or especially trance CDs that have great first 10 sec. on each track while you listen to it in stores) this CD is great throughout and it builts to the last two songs which are some of the best trance/progressive sounds I've ever heard. The first few songs may seem just a little repetitive at first but then it gets addictive! The sound is detailed and refined, far better than a lot of 'junk' techno out there. Awesome on a great sound system.

5 out of 5 stars The best progressive sound.......2000-03-12

This is dhe best progressive house sound that i ever listen. The sound is really increadable. There is no bad song. All are great and party.Music between all styles.House music

4 out of 5 stars One third of Blue Amazon only...........2001-06-10

Blue Amazon is DJs Lee Softly and James Reid plus a vocalist who became part of the team, Vicki Webb. This disc is a Remix done by one of the djs only... The other two are absent here. It says clearly on the label. I got it anyway because "The Javelin" their previouse album was terrific. I was slightly dissapointed. It's does not have the beauty of "The Javelin", just your above average dance mix.

4 out of 5 stars Get 'The Javelin' first!.......2001-05-18

This CD simply isn't in the same league as the Javelin. Firstly Vicki Webb's angelic vocals are not here. Secondly, and obviously, these are not songs they compose themselves, unlike ALL the tracks on 'The Javelin', which is one of the best Trance Cds ever(they spent two years on that thing, remember it came out before alot of the stuff you here now). The sound here is still progressive, although the ambience that was so nice on "the Javelin' is gone. The beats are faster here, but less spectacular in my opinion. 'The Javelin' sounds great on a great sound system. Also if you like 'and then the rain falls', the CD single is very good.

4 out of 5 stars Trancey, hypnotic, and uptempo all the way through.......2000-10-22

Blue Amazon is Lee Sofley and James Reid, a British duo who first teamed up in 1995 to compose and perform progressive house electronic music. Recording mainly for the now-defunct Jackpot label, they released some memorable tracks in subsequent years, including "And Then the Rain Falls" and "No Other Love," both of which have been included frequently in dj mixes by the likes of Sasha and John Digweed. Their work was compiled as a full-length mixed cd called "Javelin," which was released both in the UK and the U.S. More recently, they have become more of a live act, featuring both traditional instruments and electronic elements.

In this volume of Topaz Records' "Nokturnel Mix Sessions," Blue Amazon has put together a seventy-two minute-plus mix of tracks that consistently reflect a sound that classification freaks might pronounce to be either "progressive trance" or "trancey progressive house." Beginning with the Slacker mix of the highly popular "Roaches" by Trancesetters, the feel, pace, and mood of the mix is pretty consistent throughout; unlike some mixes which begin slowly and develop toward a climax toward the end of the set, Blue Amazon has strung together thirteen tracks that are largely of the same tempo and style. For people who enjoy this highly percussive, throbbing, trancey, minimally melodic brand of music (as I do), the mix should be enjoyable. In particular, fans of the currently ubiquitous Timo Maas should give this a listen, as there are three tracks that feature this German *wunderkindt*. For someone looking for "dark," "uplifting," or vocal styles of trance, I would suggest you look elsewhere.

The mixing here is competently done (Lee Softley has a strong background as a dj), but is hardly spectacular. The transition between Tarentalla's "Substance" and Ian Wilkie vs Timo Maas' "Twin Town," for example, seems a bit uninspired. All in all, however, the mix moves along smoothly.

If you are considering buying just one or two "progressive" mixes this year, this might not be the one on which to spend your money. There are recent mix cd's by Dave Seaman, Chris Fortier, Noel Sanger, Nick Warren, Danny Zee, and others which reflect more craftsmanship in terms of sequencing and mixing. But the choice of tunes in the Blue Amazon mix is pretty solid, so if you enjoy this style of electronic dance music, you won't regret picking up this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic addition to the awesome album "The Javelin"!.......2001-05-24

Terrific progressive trance CD. The climax of the album "The Javelin" is the song "and then the rain falls" and this single has satisfyingly different remixes of the song. I loved that song and this CD is heaven. Andy Ling's remix has a dream like quality to it. Sonically great too.

A friend introduced me to this just over a year ago. Within the first 20 seconds of the introduction, i knew i was hooked. Even 4 years after its release, it is still the most AMAZING piece of music i have ever heard. This CANNOT be missed. Not only is it all on one album, it is by a single artist!!! Blue Amazon transcend you through their use of progressive beats, lush vocals and epic journey. I cannot say enough about this, as the title states. Listen. Learn. Love.
