4 out of 5 stars Great oldies for your next party........2006-08-10

Here's an excellent display for the Museum of Antique Beats. Californians had a sense of humor in this era of trance dance stuff, it was at times a strange, synthetic intersection of The Hollywood Argyles, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Martin Denny, & movie soundtrack music. Cantamilla is one of the few enduring masterpieces of the genre; Straight Up Caffeine grabs & never lets go with its buzzsaw bottom & shrieking tribal female up top; & you can come up with your own imaginary film for the moody Theme from Daisy Glow. They're all lotsa fun. Great oldies for your next party.

5 out of 5 stars this CD will be played at my wedding and my wake.......2004-10-11

Tracks 1, 3, 5, and 8 are delicious and the rest of it is quite tasty too. Bought it back in 1994 just before I went to university and even my Skynard, Creedence et al-listening bumpkin of a roommate appreciated its mystical and melifluous qualities.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest CD ever!!.......2004-04-15

I first bought this CD when it was released in 1993. Since then I've listened to it so many times that it started skipping due to its deterioration. So I came to amazon to buy it again. If you like the west coast club music of the early 90's you will love this CD. This CD is one of the greatest. I hope you like it as much as I have all these years.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still holds up.......2007-07-24

This mix album absolutely stands out among bland big label mixes of the time. There's nothing cut & paste about it, tracks are truly 'blended' (MIXED) and the selection from one to the next is superb. From the tribal funk jump off on track 1 to the space disco to the Mills classic to the intense techno throwdown by the time Mike Dearborn's remix of Aphrohead's track Legion throbs in your brain, Carl destroys it the whole time. In fact, you can take this as a real example of Cox's mixing as a lot of his sets around the time this disc came out include any/all of these tracks. So, he wasn't just shilling out some garbage for Moonshine when he put this together. It's records he plays, which hardly any DJs who made "mix" albums for major labels in the mid to late 90's were doing. And almost 10 years later the tracks are banging.

    1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......1999-03-30

BASE is not Carl Cox's best work. A few years ago, I saw Cox at a club in NYC and went out the next day and bought FACT2 -- a dancing/clubbing/chilling/relaxing masterpiece. No matter what kind of mood you're in it will bring you to a groovy place. It's still one of my favorites.

BASE has very little in common with FACT2. It feels hastily put together, almost like Cox couldn't decide what kind of mood he wanted. Lots of mediocre dance tracks here, nothing you would particularly want to listen to outside of a tremendously loud club, the only place you could possibly appreciate this album (and even then maybe not).

If you loved FACT2, do yourself a favor and save your money. Chances are you're going to be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Carl Cox is phat!.......1999-03-24

I had the honor of seeing Carl Cox spinning a few weeks ago at one of his few stateside appearances. It was one of the best parties I have ever been to. Carl Cox, spinning on three turntables for over three hours, had elevated the party into the stratosphere and I have no doubt in my mind that he is the number one DJ in the world. I definately recommend this album as well as any other of Carl Cox's collections. Be on the look out for "Phuture 2000" as well. URB described this album best, "The mixing is flawless and the music is driving, but never speedcore; hypnotic, but not tedious; accesible, but yet totally cutting edge. Carl Cox reigns supreme."

This CD absolutely turned my life around! I was so bored and disgusted with all of my other pop rock, MTV-sedated, techno/rave wanna be music. If anybody out there feel's half as fetup with music as I did, oh my god without further a due go ahead and purchase this CD. You don't even half to wear black coats and lie to your friends and say that you didn't wear an ANTRAX t-shirt when you were in high school, when you really did. This CD is for anybody, your parents, priest, rabbi, dante, hell even your boyfreind or girlfriend might like it. Now you guys might be somewhat skeptical by the song tiltles, such as House Of Paint, Rechtschreibungsex I, or Mayflyer Anthem, but that's what makes this CD so awsome, I mean so hellish ha ha ha ha. Well you guys don't have to take my word for it, cause I think the beats from hell is a dope CD and anyone without it will be a sinko. I can't even begin to tell you guys how much this CD has changed my life, the name of the album says it all. The beats from HELL....

1 out of 5 stars Essential Classic Techno Collection.......2006-03-09

This comp is the best of early techno,Human Resource's Dominator is reason enough to buy this, but also one of Prodigy's first tracks ever, "g-force", is also included here, Istononik's ,Different Stokes" is classic underground hardcore,(later remixed by TEN CITY records ,as a deep house track) This is a great compilation that makes me long for the old skool days of JNCOs, warehouse parties and 3 day campouts and real PLUR, and did I mention UTAH SAINTS!!!!!CLASSIC, Deejay Junior Griggs aka Dj Gyro (humblemumbledj@hotmail.com)

5 out of 5 stars only for the head strong.......2000-09-14

A classic set of all the best rave/old skool tunes of the early 90s.Human resource's addition to this cd made it a must for me, they set the path that others could only follow.

4 out of 5 stars old school still available ?.......1999-03-22

this album rite here makes me feel old. Most of these tracks are the end of the old school house movement, because right after this began all the breakbeat started coming out and then to where we are today. If u feel nostalgic and wanna hear some old school tunes pick this up.

4 out of 5 stars an electric eclectic mix of old and new, will make you shake.......1998-07-20

a wonderful blend of various beats makes this compilation a must-have for those who want music that no one else has...although some tunes tend to stretch, overall this cd has the ingredients to make any groove session complete...highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Nice Intro to Gabber.......2005-02-14

This is a nice disc. Fast and hard. Get "Nightmares from Rotterdam" in addition to this, if you like it.

"Mind Ripper", "Natas Is Counting", and "Strength Of Unity" are probably my favorite tracks off this. "Slaves to the Rave" is a good one too, but I prefer the previously mentioned remix on "Nightmares from Rotterdam".

A note to those who read the previous reviewer:
    Gabber sounding like rock?
Not quite. Last time I checked, rock had nothing to do with pounding beats and heavy bass. Gabber is about the hardest and fastest techno you're going to find anywhere. Pounding bass, relentlessly fast beats. If that's not what you're looking for, stick with happycore or trance or something.

    5 out of 5 stars Flawless, without a doubt........2000-06-23

This compilation is viciously hard, pounding with bass, and overall, flawless in style. The beats are put down ominously by Santana....pounding through the floor and eating out the soul. Pay close attention to "Slaves of the rave," this song is one of the best on this compilation. There is another vicious remix of this same song on "Nightmares from Rotterdam," another gabber compilation which ranks up there with this compilation.

For those of you who enjoy the pounding, now quickly emerging hard German house/techno that is being spit out of Germany, then you love this compilation. Although a bit old, it is ahead of it's time and still makes it's cameos every so often at Sound Factory and Limelight saturdays.

Hard, Underground, and Unstoppable. You will love this without a doubt and above all, you will NOT be dissapointed.

    5 out of 5 stars HELL YEAH!.......2000-04-22

When I first got this CD, I knew nothing of Gabber, save that it was "...very angry techno... like gabber and hard-core techno that has, just, hellish beats that are just faster than any speed metal." This was true. The material on this CD is actually not Gabber in the truest sense of the word, however. This CD is much more rave and break-beat oriented than actual Gabber.

The DJ who compiled this work, Omar Santana, is the man who invented the style of music heard here, dubed "Hard-Hop" after it's hip-hop influences. Omar Santana actually originally wrote hip-hop, breakbeat, and trip-hop music before incorporating them all into the Hard-Hop sound.

This CD is actually a very good introduction to Gabber, and Hardcore in general. Not for the faint of heart, or impatient however. This CD left me craving more hardcore techno, speed, and just insanity in general. My only warning is that this CD alone is not enough! Get Nightmares From Rotterdam for some real Gabber once you've listened to this!

4 out of 5 stars 'Calling All Industrial Ravers,' this is for you........2000-03-01

A couple of years ago I was visiting family in New York when I went to the music store to get my daily `fix.' You see, I live in the middle of nowhere and it takes time for newer music to reach the music stores. I came across this CD quite by accident. I am a self-proclaimed music junkie and have been known to buy CD simply for the artwork.

I bought it and didn't expect it to be anything special. It completely blew me away. I own several hardcore-industrial CDs. This one is the hardest, fastest and loudest I have ever heard. The Bass alone is enough to shake down a brick wall. IT Rocks! I had never heard of any of the artists or the DJ before. From the first track I was hooked and listened to it straight through. I was amazed.

Some of the best tracks are #5) Omar Santana - Mind Ripper; this is a cross between industrial and thrash rock, #2) Trickster - White Line; this seems to be a new fusion of hard acid and trance, and #1) Archatos - Strength of Unity; a creepy, `George Orwell' inspired `Bass Cyclonosphere' style Gabber song.

Just a word of warning, this CD is not for the faint of heart. You should give a good listen before you buy it unless you already are a fan of the Gabber movement. This CD was engineered for teeth grinding, hardcore Techno heads. If that is you, give it a shot. :)

    5 out of 5 stars BEST HARDCORE.......1999-10-03

Now if you crave the rave and want a blood rush then get this cd. packed with tons of beat and base and energetic. this is the kind of hardcore every hardcore dj should make!

3 out of 5 stars Some discs are good, some are not as good........2005-02-25

Disc 1, Trance Theory- Tracks 1 and 2 are uplifting trance which I do not like that much. Track 1 is okay at the beginning, it progresses well and has a good beat and bassline, but when the synths come in, it's more uplifting. Tracks 3 and 4 are a little better, and tracks 5-8 are my personal favorites. They're darker than the first few tracks. Track 9 is decent, but I'm not a huge Corsten/Tiesto fan... Track 10 goes back to uplifting trance, and 11 is mediocre at best. If you enjoy uplifting trance you should like this CD, but otherwise I'd try to find some of the tracks toward the middle and get those individually instead.

Disc 2, Damn Trance- I'm not into this "Save my soul" song. It contains a sample of Eddie Amador's "Rise", check that song out instead. A lot of the other songs aren't so good, including "Communication" (This isn't THAT bad, but I think it's way longer than it needs to be, at almost 9 minutes, and almost anyone can agree to that unless you're a huge Armin Van Buuren fan), and "Miami" (Just not good). Jon The Dentist is not a bad mixer but some of the songs he chose are not great. His song "Silence" is okay, though. My favorite song on here is "Sex". It somehow stands out from the rest, and it reminds me a lot of Voodoo & Serano's "Blood Is Pumpin'" toward the middle of the song.

Disc 3, Trance Voyage- This disc isn't too unique or interesting, but there are some killer songs on here like "The Second Coming" that you won't find anywhere else. It's a great hard trance track. I really wish that the songs on here weren't mixed together because I would prefer to not have to listen to good songs mixing into bad songs, which happens a lot on here. Another thing that could be improved about this one is that there could have been less tracks. There are 13 on here, and it's not that much, but it was enough to have to cram a lot of mixing in.

Disc 4, The Depths of Progressive Trance- Is there a volume 1 of this? It's good, mainly for the first two tracks. "Cine" is extremely rare and I think it is only found on this disc. The last track, "Stargazer," is a good track, just about 10 minutes, so it's a bit long. My only complaint about this one is that the mixing is not very good, you hear a "double beat" in some songs during the mixing. It would have been nice if this was not mixed as well.

Disc 5, Atomic Trance- This is one of my two favorite discs in this collection, and I would say that it is probably the most unique one of the bunch. It is not like any other trance I've ever heard before, but it is really excellent stuff. The mixing is a lot better on this disc, except for the fact that a lot of the tracks on here were extremely long to start with, so they had to cram in about a minute or two of mixing between songs. My only other complaint on this one is that I don't like the last two songs. But that's it, overall, good disc.

Disc 6, Trancescapes- This is my other favorite disc. It just has such excellent songs that I never seem to get tired of. My favorite is probably "Bugbear," and I think it should have been the last track rather than the first if this disc absolutely had to be mixed. It is nice and relaxing to listen to. Other really good tracks include "More," "Shifting Clarity," and pretty much the rest of them. I think that a lot of trance fans have heard of "Air" and "Xenophobe", which are good songs as well. I didn't know about them originally, though... But this is good, and I just don't get tired of these songs.

    4 out of 5 stars So-so.......2004-07-16

Besides "Trance Theory" and "DAMN Trance", the rest of the CD'S are amaturish and repetitive.
I recommend just buying those 2 as they are well enough alone but if you got extra money then buy this.

3 out of 5 stars A couple of CDs are mixed with dirty vinyl.......2003-01-13

If you can handle listening to music that comes from dirty vinyl, and you really like dance music, then I say go for it! But I found it distracting that music on CD comes with pops and stuff when they could have used a record cleaner or something. Also, this collection has been out for a while, and there are only a few big name artists in the mix.

Here's an incomplete review of the 5 albums that come with it:

Transcapes -- Some of the songs are too repetitive and not very cutting edge, kind of flat and boring. Other songs drag. Much popping, very dirty vinyl. I don't know what Danny Zee was thinking but he needs a record cleaner or newer vinyl.

Trance Voyage -- Some nice trancy disco (Disco Fanz 2000) and a song with a big sound (agrimonizer). I like the few tracks I've listened to and remember.

DAMN Trance -- Songs about sex ("in every position") and more. Pretty good stuff on this album.

Atomic Trance -- Pretty good selections and no hissing or popping. Not too cutting edge but pretty with it.

The Depths of Progressive Trance -- Just what it says it is, progressive and deep. My favorate album of the collection. I wouldn't really call it cutting edge though compared with some of the stuff you can find off of MP3.com for free. Pretty good mix, though.
