4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

4 out of 5 stars Good album and touching song.......2006-04-23

This album is a must for any Husker fan if just for one song. Track 18 THE NEBRASKA SONG is on here and it is the tribute song to Brook Barringer, the QB for the Huskers that was killed in a single engine plane crash 10 years ago on Apr 18, 1996. This took place after his Sr season befor the NFL drafted where he was projected to do well. He had became friends with the band. They have sung this in concert in Nebr and it has been one of the most touching things seen.

4 out of 5 stars Good Variety of Songs and Singing Styles.......2000-02-09

This album has shown the country music world that Sawyer Brown isn't just a novelty song singing group. Some of the better songs on this CD are remakes. "This Night Won't Last Forever", an excellent cover of Michael Johnson's version, is actually better as a Sawyer Brown tune. The other remake is the title track and is also better than the original. Other great "original" material is "Another Side", "Talkin' 'Bout You", "Small Talk" and "Transistor Rodeo", my personal favorite on the CD. Sawyer Brown has come a long way from their mostly filler albums of the 80's. They just keep getting better.

5 out of 5 stars have seen them live - highly recommended.......1998-09-03

This CD is a major accomplishment for Sawyer Brown. A life long country fan I can tell you that anyone who has followed Sawyer Brown's career won't be disappointed in this album.

4 out of 5 stars More of Anne Heche, please..........2006-06-24

Six Days Seven Nights, brings to the screen the story of an unlikely pair that gets stranded on a South Pacific isle, "Lost-style."
Harrison Ford, Anne Heche and Jacqueline Obradors (both of whom are GORGEOUS!), David Schwimmer (who is in his familiar "Ross" role), and the rest of the cast, carry out their performances very well, though the plot could have been a lot better.
The major setbacks were in relation to their unrealistic encounters with the pirates and the unrealistic way and ease by which they fixed up their plane, took off, and then landed again. It was a bit much...
Overall, the setting, the acting, and the music are very good, while the plot, the humor, and the dialogues could have been better.
Though by far not a masterpiece, Six Days Seven Nights is a movie worth watching, as it will provide for an evening's entertainment. 3 1/2 Stars

4 out of 5 stars Tropical Romantic Memories.......2003-10-06

Great Album! A super mix of various tropical themes uncluttered by vocals expressing a variety of moods. Very good background for carribean themed parties or just soft listening.

4 out of 5 stars Edelman gives his six days and seven nights of fame........2002-10-08

Randy Edelman continues to impress me scoring hit after hit and this one is a perfect example of that. Edelman goes hawaiian with this score (due to the setting of the film) and throws in an impressive orchestral sound to accompany it. The theme first appears in "Into the Mist" and has that trademark Edelman sound with soaring strings and cymbal crashes that put the icing on the cake. The theme itself is the love theme of the film and is pretty. It occurs a lot throughout the score in various places, but is not overused. The other motif is a hawaiian dance tune, complete with guitars, synthesizers, orchestra, and lots of percussion. It makes you want to get up and dance like an idiot (I wouldn't try it). This thematic material occurs most noticeably in "Maketea", "Pink Kawala", "Fixing the Old Beaver", and the odd sounding "Lunching with Peacocks", which I read somewhere sounds like "Lunching with Alka-Seltzer" (listen to the beginning of the track to see what I mean). The other tracks to point out are "Crashdance" and "Pirates" which has the same percussion work as "The Race" in "The Skulls" soundtrack also composed by Edelman. Tailing off the soundtrack is a song by Taj Mahal which is one of the dumbest songs i've ever heard. Your best bet is to stop after track 20 and skip track 21, unless off-beat music with lyrics that you cannot understand are your thing. All in all, a fine work and a job well done by Edelman, who is one of my favorite composers today.

3 out of 5 stars Very pleasant, but no "party" tunes here..........2001-12-20

There is apparently some confusion regarding the type of music contained in this recording. This is not a "Jimmy Buffett" style, have a good time, party album. Most of the twenty instrumental tracks, are straight orchestral pieces. Perhaps seven of the tracks have what I would call a "tropical" influence, characterized by a "jungle" or "island" drumbeat with the melody played above by various instruments. Except for the too short, "Pink Kawala" there are no dance tunes here.

What makes this collection interesting is of course the "tropical" influence, the mixing of different instruments and rhythms, with the traditional orchestral sound. The results are mostly positive. It would have been nice if there a few more upbeat "parrothead" party type tunes, but that was not what composer Randy Edelman had in mind. Choosing to go with an orchestral approach, with some modern touches. It seems that synthesized sounds are used a good deal in the rhythm tracks, which kind of gives the music a "robotic" groove at times. There are instances where the music sounds just a bit too clean and "unnatural".

There are no strong repetitive musical themes, and the overall package is a pretty good combination of styles. Tracks like "Crashdance", "Fixing The Old Beaver", Subways and Skyscrapers", "Maketea", "Pirates" and "A Ray of Hope" are among the best to be found here. Nothing really outstanding, just a pleasant change of pace. Like a vacation!

5 out of 5 stars Just plain grand !.......2001-03-29

After the movie at the theater, I had to get the VHS. Now that I have a DVD, I had to get the disc, and finally, not least the audio CD. It's just plain grand litening to these tunes while working, driving, falling to sleep, whatever ! I even recorded the film soundtrack on audio cassette, makes also great entertainment while working...

4 out of 5 stars Six Days On the Road (Aim)--Dave Dudley.......2005-04-19

As a midwesterner, I saw Dave Dudley in person in a small club when "Six Days On the Road" became a big hit. Dave was from Wisconsin. He was on the Soma record label in Minneapolis, MN at the beginning of his career. These are the original recordings from the Soma label and sound just as great today as they did 40 years ago. Although there aren't many truck driving songs on this album, it shows Dave could sing other types of songs especially folk songs. If you like Dave Dudley, you have to have this album as it shows where he started. He was the King of the truck driving songs singers! A must have for your Dave Dudley collection.

4 out of 5 stars A Christmas celebration for Classical Music Lovers only.......2002-11-06

The cover of this 2 disc set features half a dozen of the great voices of our time: Pavarotti, Domingo, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Leontyne Price. However, selections by these soloists comprise only 2/5 of the set, the rest being choral and orchestral works.

Nor are these fabulous voices given equal representation. Pavarotti and my personal favorite, Joan Sutherland, have four songs apiece; Price and Kanawa have three apiece; Renata Tebaldi two and only one for Placido Domingo.

However, this is basically a very good collection. The first disc is a bit on the solemn side, while the second is brighter. Pavarotti leads off the entire collection with "Adeste Fideles" and returns later on the first disc with "Mille Cherubini in Coro". His renditions of "Panis Angelicus" and "Gesu Bambino" help grace the second CD.

Joan Sutherland brightens the first disc with her "Joy To The World" and then sets the lighter mood of the second disc with "Deck The Halls" and later returns with a sprightly "Twelve Days of Christmas". She also gives us the beautiful and tender "Virgin Slumber Song". Leontyne Price gives us Schubert's "Ave Maria", "O Tannenbaum" and "O Holy Night". Kiri Te Kanawa gives us Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria", surprises us with "White Christmas" (a very beautiful & unique interpretation), and winds up the entire set with "Mary's Boy Child". Renata Tebaldi's contributions are Brahms' "Lullaby" and "Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle". Placido Domingo's sole appearance is with the dynamic "Hosanna in Excelsis" from Lloyd Weber's Requiem.

It is a splendid feast of vocal performances. However, the choral and orchestral selections have weak spots. I was especially disappointed in the Chicago Symphony & Chorus rendition of "For Unto Us a Child Is Born", and also thought that a good rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus would've worked better. The orchestral selections did have bright spots such as "Sleigh Ride" (Mozart's, not Leroy Anderson's), Tchaikovsky's "Waltz of the Snowflakes" from the Nutcracker, and the "Skater's Waltz".

All in all, this is a collection which belongs in your Christmas Classical collection, but can't be considered an absolute essential.

3 out of 5 stars This may be a good album; the marketing ploy is shameless.......2001-11-15

I have not listened specifically to this edition, but I can tell you with near absolute certainty that this is a classic example of marketing at its most shameless. This is nothing more than a reissue of "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth", but with a different title! (Something similar was done back in 1963, when the Harry Simeone Chorale's ever-popular 1958 LP, "Sing We Now of Christmas", was retitled and re-released as "The Little Drummer Boy"--its current CD title--, but at least the advertising there seemed slightly more honest.)

Everything on "The #1 Christmas Album" is exactly the same as on "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth", right down to the order of the musical selections on the album. Only the cover design is different. Decca/London apparently believes that it can fool its customers into thinking that they are buying another album if they simply change the title. Of course, the album itself is reasonably good, though not on the level of most of my favorite Christmas albums, not even the now-deleted RCA Victor "Christmas Treasures", a collection culled from RCA Victor's Living Stereo series. The offense lies in the marketing gimmick, something I have never seen in all my years of avid CD buying. This is worse than all those "collections" which just rehash old material--at least each collection is a newly organized album.

5 out of 5 stars Touch of angle, touch of heart.......2001-11-14

If you enjoy opera or choir, this is a must collection. The Choir of King's College probably knows the secret how to make the listener flying among thousands of Christmas candles. Pavarotti's opening is so mighty that remind people, this year, to be courageous and to believe (not limited from religious sense but the humanity perspective.) And his Mill Cherubini and Panis Angelicus can vibrate one's tear from the heart, reflecting to the tragedy and the war in 2001. As for the sopranos, this collection is a Jewel. Joan Sutherland's Deck The Hall and The Twelve Days of Christmas bring out the merry atmosphere of the season and cheer one's mood to celebrate. Also her Virgin's Slumber Song has so much beauty and grace . Kanawa's Ave Maria is so dramatic performed that perfectly drawn out the human's longing for love and protection. All the orchestra also have done a splendid job. The arrangement is perfect there is no dull moment from the beginning to the end.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Decent single.......2005-06-22

This version only has 3 tracks on it, omitting the instrumental version of Six Days, which isn't so bad. (Without the weird vocals, the song just loses something, plus it's been extended, which makes the pace drag a bit). The radio edit is just what you'd expect, a shortened version. The remix with Mos Def once again brings out the Walkie Talkie/Treach Battle Beat background (a nice little running gag) while Mos Def raps over the track. This really only resembles the original by having the original vocals in it also. The 100 Metre Dash sing is decent, being a fast little tracks that would fit right in with a car chase scene in a movie, but is on the short side. This would worth getting if you don't absolutely need the instrumental.

4 out of 5 stars DJ Shadow brings new meaning to the word "remix".......2002-11-23

"Six Days" from the LP "The Private Press" is a weird one. If DJ Shadow hadn't made this song, then god knows who would've! DJ Shadow's songs, like most Hip Hop songs have a message within them. While some are more suble than others, this song's message is pretty obvious (and for an 'old' track, the lyrics are relevant to today's current issues). The Mos Def vocal remix is sublime, the video is bizarre, and the music is as rewarding as ever.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent new single........2002-11-08

This is the second new single from DJ Shadow and recently hit number one on Billboard 's Top 12"/Maxi single sales chart. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it because I don't know much about the artist so his music is new to me. The first track is the remix and with more guitars and hip hop elements and the rap of Mos Def--- the mix is only(3:51) but very intesesting. The Radio Edit(3:38) and Album Instrumental (4:59) are more trip hop in feel. The best song is the track "100 Metre Dash" which combines elements of drum & bass with actual live jazz elements like the drums pattern. The fault is that there should have been a second remixer to give the song a different vibe than just DJ Shadow. Very good.

    4 out of 5 stars A very good single.......2002-10-24

The CD single consists of 4 songs and the "Six Days" video. Three of the songs are "Six Days" remixes: a radio edit, a full length album version instrumental, and a remix featuring new vocals and music. The latter of the three consists of the woman's voice from the song, with the music from The Private Press' "Walkie Talkie", and added lyrics from rapper Mos Def (I believe). Neither of these three remixes are groundbreaking, but the instrumental is very nice. "100 Metre" is a very cool song that is worth the price of the single. It has a dark tone (like a lot of DJ Shadow's work) that fits in well with the Private Press era music. If you are a fan of the new album, I would check this out. Its a nice single to have.

    4 out of 5 stars more hip-hopish six days.......2002-10-16

In this very first single of Dj Shadow form Private Press you'll find two version of Six days, one of them is featuring Mos Def with more hip-hop rhytms of course. And the other one is radio edit of Six Days. I hope you'll enjoy listening to this song w/ scraches and Mos Def's vocals.

Moreover this single has a new song called 100 Metre Dash, which is also worth listening for times.
I wish there were more remixes of six days w/ different tastes in this single. It would deserve shinny five stars if it had, though.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A well deserved five stars.......2002-12-17

This is a superb brass ensemble. I really enjoy Christmas CDs, and quite a few of the ones I've owned are brass Christmas CDs. I had not heard the Bay Brass before hearing this recording, but I really must say that their precision, timing, power and "attack" truly rivals the legendary Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble. I also think that they surpass the PJBE's own Christmas recordings in many ways. One person mentioned that the organ was not as well-recorded on this disc, and at times it was not easily heard. For me, however, this is not as great a flaw. The real star here is this brass ensemble, which is absolutely first class. Sometimes organ/brass discs have an overpowering organ, and on this disc, the Bay Brass plays with such astonishing skill, that I do not miss hearing the organ accompaniment, which is there, but very much in background. If you are an organ fan, I could understand this may not be the disc for you, but if you love the sound of brass with some organ & percussion accompaniment, this will be exactly your cup-of-tea. There are just enough of the more well-known selections on this disc to satisfy many, along with a few lessor-known pieces. Hark the Herald Angels Sing has all of the excitement and precision one could wish for, in a very imaginative arrangement. Greensleeves is performed in an arrangement originally written by the before-mentioned Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble. Again, I must confess I actually prefer THIS slower version to the version so masterfully done by the Phillip Jones Ensemble, and I mean this as the highest possible compliment. There is an earth-shaking Gabrielli Canzon here, where the organ takes the antiphonal, or echo, parts. And in one of the most creative & unusual arrangements of Silent Night I've yet heard, the brass choir begins playing in a very mysterious way as an echoing melody at first, followed by the organ. The melody moves on to a medley of Away in a Manger, before returning to the Silent Night theme. The Hallelujah Chorus is arranged here for brass, percussion & organ to great effect, and the organ is definately powerful on that piece, as well as on Bach's Christmas Oratorio as well. The clarity of the brass section is nothing sort of amazing. As a real brass ensemble fan, I am eargerly awaiting more recordings by the Bay Brass after hearing this cd. Absolutely first-class.

      3 out of 5 stars A Brass & Organ Christmas sans Organ.......2002-12-09

If you purchase this CD with the hope of hearing a top-notch brass choir and magnificent and large pipe organ playing a varied program of Christmas music in a splendid venue, you may be disappointed when you discover that with one notable exception, the great organ of Grace Cathedral is all but inaudible for the most part. In part, I think this is due to the location of microphones during the recording, since the brass sound quite close to the microphones, while the organ, when heard, seems to be quite a distance away from the microphones and/or brass. My guess is that for whatever reason, the arrangements have not been written to showcase the organ or even give it an equal place on the program. Even in the one selection which features the organ in dialogue with the brass, the sound of the organ is so distant that it is easily overpowered by the brass choir. The small portative organ used for three of the selections has, for the most part, a more audible presence than the great cathedral organ could ever hope to have in this recording.

The music on this CD is outstanding, and the performance of The Bay Brass is impeccable. Now, if only we could hear what the organ and organist John Fenstermaker were playing, this CD would be complete.

5 out of 5 stars Arrangements, performances, & engineering all excellent.......2001-12-14

If you enjoy the sound of large symphonic brass ensemble with pipe organ, you'll like what you hear on this album. The venue is San Francisco's Grace Cathedral, a richly reverberant environment that's ideal for music like this. Excellent sonics showcase a superb job by the audio engineers. The recording is clear and distinct, with good presence and stereo imaging.

      A. David Krehbiel conducts the Bay Brass, organist John Fenstermaker, and four guest artists in fifteen magnificent arrangements for brass and organ. In addition, the opening track briefly features the Grace Cathedral carillon, and track 13 is an organ solo.

I had not heard the Bay Brass before I listened to this album. In my opinion, they compare favorably with other virtuoso symphonic brass ensembles, like the Philip Jones, Summit, and Millar brass ensembles.

The Bay Brass's standard instrumentation for this album seems to be four trumpets, four horns, three tenor trombones, one bass trombone, and tuba. Flugelhorns, euphoniums, and even alphorns can be heard on some tracks. (The players are all professionals from orchestras in the San Francisco area.) Four guest musicians assist: one trumpeter and 3 percussionists. Two of Grace Cathedral's four organs were used for this recording.

The selections are mostly traditional, from a variety of time periods and styles. Following are a few of my favorites: Heinrich Schutz's "Psalm VIII" is weighty and glorious; try reading the Biblical text as you listen for an added dimension of enjoyment. Douglas Haislip's colorful arrangement of "Christmas Day (Choral Fantasy on Old Carols)" does credit to the original composer, Gustav Holst, himself a master orchestrator. The verve and precision of Bizet's "March of the Kings (Farandole)" is a delight, especially as heard in the trombones. All of the tracks are worth listening to; there are no duds on this CD.

I have loved Christmas music for brass since I first heard "A Festival of Carols in Brass" by the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble on vinyl 24 years ago (now on CD: CBS MK7033). The Bay Brass's "A Brass & Organ Christmas" is a worthy successor, in the tradition of great Christmas brass recordings. I highly recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Brass & Organ Christmas - GREAT.......2000-12-07

Recorded in Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, this is a really spectacular CD featuring a ton of great music and many familiar classics. Huge sound, flawless performances by The Bay Brass and organist John Fenstermaker. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys Christmas/holiday music. The acoustics in Grace Cathedral add a unique and very rich dimension to the sound.

      5 out of 5 stars American Record Guide (Nov/Dec. 2000) says..........2000-11-07

      Brass and Organ Christmas/Bay Brass

"If you're looking for festive Christmas music by brass and organ, you won't find a better recording than this one. The arrangements are lovely and unusual, the performances loving. While I enjoy the whole disc, I am especially taken by Elgar Howarth's haunting look at Greensleeves, Anthony DiLorenzo's spectacular settings of "Joy to the World" and "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing", Jonathan Ring's touching arrangement of "Silent Night" (which begins and ends with conductor A. David Krehbiel and horn player Robert Ward on alphorns), David Baldwin's setting of the Hallelujah Chorus and Ralph Carmichael's colorful arrangement of "Twelve Days of Christmas."

Staffed by members of the San Francisco Symphony and other important area orchestras, Bay Brass is a truly wonderful brass ensemble with a full-bodied sound and no rough edges. The recording was made in Grace Cathedral with John Fenstermaker, who plays a magnificent Aeolian-Skinner organ with 123 ranks and a smaller 19th-century hand-pumped one. Considering the acoustics of such a large space, the recorded sound is excellent - the group is heard in fine detail, and the lengthy sound delay is never obtrusive and is often magical."
