Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

One of the best ever!.......2007-04-24

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

Great CD!.......2007-01-19

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

David Bowie returned to recording after a four-year break with this relatively clean-cut 1983 album. Although offering another definite new direction for Bowie, with Nile Rodgers of Chic helping to produce a stylish post-disco dance sound, Let's Dance is a mixed bag. Much of the album's success was due to its three danceable hit singles--"China Girl," a sensuous Bowie/Iggy Pop collaboration, the distinctive "Modern Love," and the funky title track. However, much of the rest of the album is bland and vapid, marking the start of serious decline in Bowie's songwriting skills. A cover of Metro's "Criminal World" and "Cat People" are the only other strong tracks here. --James Swift

What can you say? Every song on this CD is great!

I bought this album because I heard Let's Dance on the radio. It was a Bowie song I never heard, but I liked it so I bought the album. It had some pretty "okay" songs on it. Let's Dance and China Girl are definately the highlights on this record, and perhaps the only highlights. The others are enjoyable, but they don't rank in David Bowie's best. At least David managed to make an album with 2 of his best and most popular songs.

In conclusion, I HIGHLY reccomend this to anyone who's a die-hard fan of David Bowie. If you don't exactly worship at the alter of Dave but own some of his work, you may want to stay clear of Let's Dance and just download the songs Let's Dance and China Girl.

''Let's Dance'' is not one of Bowie's best albums, but it's something you need to check, like all of Nile Rodger's co-produced works. Analysed as an artistic project it's not even in Bowie's top10, due to the inconsistency that marked all of his albums after ''Lodger'' and is not absent here either. A prolific songwriter, Bowie is always coming back from his ashes with a large set of new material, but the quality control seems to have disappeared since almost 2 decades ago and in the end we get little -when we're lucky- gems among time-wasting filler tracks. What makes this record so charming though is that the singles are simply amazing, the compaining videos are among his best and the yellow-headed superstar persona he created to introduce it all to us is simply the coolest we could get from him since the Berlin albums. ''Modern love'' is a deliciously simple rocker, one of his catchiest singles ever. ''Let's Dance'' is one of his best tracks to the purpose explicited on its title, and ''China Girl'', although not in pair with Iggy's version, is also a very clever single. ''Cat people'' is another good 80's-Bowie-song and the production of the whole album is in general very consistent, despite of some weak but still listenable and enjoyable fillers. It won't hurt you to have this in your collection - if you don't expect a masterpiece, but a nice album for good fun instead.

David Bowie's 1983 opus, "Let's Dance" has become quite a controversial title in his catalog in the years passing since it's release. Some see it as a sellout, others see it as a nadir, but I think both views are a little out of hand.

Following SEVEN five-star albums (IMO) between 1974-1980 (Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station To Station, Low, Heroes, Lodger and Scary Monsters), anything less than perfection from the man was seen as a colossal disaster, and while Let's Dance is a great album, it is a slight decline from the albums he recorded in the mid to late seventies.

Another thing that really hurts the album is that it was his first album since "Young Americans" in 1975 that really is a product of its era. "Let's Dance" is as 1983 as Flashdance and Kajagoogoo. This album would not have been able to work in 1982 or 1984, much like "Young Americans" is a total product of 1975. It was totally the right album at the right time.

The album was highly commercial and provided him with more American success than he'd ever seen before and the videos made him a mainstay on the then-new MTV, but the commercialness of it has made the album seen as "David Bowie-lite" to most diehard fans. Truth be told, there is much to offer from this album.

"Modern Love", "China Girl" and "Let's Dance" are the one-two-three punch that starts this album off. These songs are solely responsible for bringing many new fans to the David Bowie party in 1983, and all of them are great singles. "Let's Dance" is presented as a 7 1/2 minute long 12" style mix of the song instead of the 4 minute version that made it a #1 single.

"Without You" was an afterthought choice for a single, and is a nice low-key new wave style ballad, although the Keith Haring portrait on the 45 cover might be more memorable than the album.

"Ricochet" is definately the closest thing to the Berlin trilogy as Bowie will get on an otherwise commercial album. I hated the song at first but it's really grown on me.

"Criminal World" was another single-in-the-making, it kinda reminded me of a slower Duran Duran style song, a very pleasing song.

"Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" is where the album falters. The original 1982 version of the song produced by Giorgio Moroder is a masterpiece and one of Bowie's most underrated singles. Here is a re-recording that turns it into a standard snoozeworthy 80's rock song.

"Shake It" is another bad track, ending the album with filler of the worst kind.

However, I love the first six of the eight tracks, and that is enough to make the album worth owning. It is nowhere in the league of Bowie's 1974-1982 work, but at the same time, this is the best album we'll get from Bowie until 1993 when his career begins its renaissance. Stevie Ray Vaughan fans also should check this album out.

Far From The Gods.......2006-01-08

On the one hand, 'Let's Dance' is the first album since his 1967 debut, where Bowie releases a record not worthy of the highest praise on this planet. But on the other hand, it is by far not as awful as some have made it. Also, it is very much 1983 in a bottle, as Ziggy was 1972, Heroes 1977 and Scary Monsters 1980. After all, it was the year of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and Culture Club's 'Colour By Numbers' (of which the latter is by far the best of all three albums). It would be on 'Tonight' that Bowie, for the first time, was out of time.

'Let's Dance' opens with the brilliantly rocking pop gem 'Modern Love', which, as the third single off the album soared to a UK #2 / US #14 peak. It is deliciously disposable, utterly commercial, but not at all too self-conscious. It is followed by the second single (UK #2 / US #10), the now-stample-on-radio, 'China Girl', an arguably somewhat superior version of the song Bowie wrote with Iggy Pop for his 1977 comeback album 'The Idiot'. Here 'China Girl' is a soft & smooth danceable track with great rhytm & also retaining Iggy's haunting lyrics.
The title track, and also the first single off the album, a UK #1 / US #1, appears here in its full lenght, majestic & brooding, with darkening lyrics & joyous instrumental backing, that made it an instant worldwide classic.
The fourth single, which was released only in the US, and only scraped to an undeserved #73, is 'Without You', a simple but breathtakingly gorgeous song, which is my personal favourite on the record (due to overexposure of the three brilliant first singles). It is romantic & gentle & brilliantly sung, an underrated gem, if there ever was one. Also one of the most 'new romantic' tracks on the record.
'Ricochet', another of my favourites, has the most brooding text on the album, & also the strangest music, with rolling drums that underline, that 'Let's Dance', if nothing else, at least still is somewhat darker than 'Thriller'.
The cover of 'Criminal World' is excellent, & brings further neo-romantic mystique onto the record. It is followed by a re-recording of 'Cat People (Putting Out Fire)', a song Bowie originally wrote and recorded with Giorgio Moroder for the 'Cat People' soundtrack, in 1982. Released as a single at that time, it reached a low & undeserved UK #26.
Anyway, in its original state, it was a delicious piece of New Romanticism, the closest Bowie ever came to the wonderful, glammy dance of Duran Duran, & with lyrics & sound effects that made it haunting like any classic Bowie track from the 70s.
Here, on 'Let's Dance', however, it is tossed off in a blaze of hard rock. Not that it doesn't work, it's an almost excellent recording, but it pales so much compared to the original version, and worse = you can't stop thinking of how much better the original was.
'Shake It', which closes the album in a Boy Georgesque way, is a great dance track, poppy, & self-consciously disposable & irrelevant. It ends a record that, if released by anybody else, would have been seen as, at least, a near-masterpiece, but which, like its recording of 'Cat People' (a microcosm mirror of all the strenghts & weaknesses of the album), just didn't match the earlier Bowie. Still, if you already own everything from 'Space Oddity' to 'Scary Monsters', this album is well worth a thought, 'cos it harbours a warmth, that Bowie at least retained through the eighties, on to 'Never Let Me Down', before it was lost to experimentation for experimentation's sake (as opposed to experimentation for the sake of your life, as one could have called his 70's period).

So this album is great. But unlike 'The Man Who Sold The World', 'Station To Station' or 'Diamond Dogs', this one is far from the gods. Far, far from the gods...

Foxtrot Fun.......2006-07-07

My husband and I really enjoyed this CD. We're ballroom beginners and have trouble finding music to practice to. This CD has great songs (with singing - neither one of us cares for the "instrumental" versions of popular songs) and it allows us to practice dancing to a variety of tempi.

If you are looking for a collection of standards that are by the origional artists, this is a great CD! I'm dissapointed how many collections are out there where the music is watered down versions that sound much like elevator music. This collection should definitely be apart of yours. It's great to finally be able to dance to the origionals that made the dancing popular to begin with. I should point out that this isn't a collection of greatest hits, but it shouldn't be overlooked.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Pretty cool live DJing, but it's not great as it's a little cheesy and dated.......2006-01-12

First of all, the album isn't all that long and it's pretty repetitive (he repeats the same song - "Let Me Clear My Throat"). DJ Kool himself isn't that great either - he's not bad, but I think some people might not like him. The beats here are pretty great, but his singing/rapping ruins it in a way (also, the production is pretty good but could use some remastering). If you like him, though, then that won't matter. The most well known song here is the lesser known hit "Let Me Clear My Throat" which most of you have probably heard before but don't know who performed it. The lyrics here are pretty pointless as it's essentially just a party album. If that's what you're looking for then it's merely "good", but I doubt most people would call it great. Overall, it's a pretty short album that genre fans will like, just not love. All in all I'd still recommend it.

The only reason I gave this album 4 stars is because it was way too short(only 8 tracks and 2 of them are an intro and an outro). But otherwise, this album is slammin'! It's a great cd to play at a party or in a club! The best song is the title track Let Me Clear My Throat(which is featured 3 times on the cd: the regular version on track 2, the Old School Reunion Remix on track 7, and on the 20 Minute Workout Remix on track 6), but I also really like the songs Put That Hump In Your Back, and I Got Dat Feelin'(which samples the beat for Naughty By Nature's classic song "Uptown Anthem"). If you're looking for a good party album, pick this up today!

This three disk compilation reminded us of all the great ones- including new options we hadn't thought about. I really enjoyed hearing the organ and strings versions of the songs. If you're someone who hears a classical or baroque piece of music, but can't remember the name or the precise tune, this is a must-have to jog your memory and trigger the tear ducts!

Comprehensive Classical Selection.......2004-04-15

I searched all over for a CD set that had a somewhat comprehensive list of classical selections that are traditionally played at weddings. When I found this 3 CD set, I was very pleased. It contains 61 works from almost as many composers. This set might not contain the "best recording ever" of each of the selections, however it is very well done and the quality is very good. I used it primarily to choose the pieces that I wanted to have played by the church organist, and so the actual recordings were more for my consumption rather than for use in the ceremony/reception itself. However, I would not have hestitated to use the CD's in the wedding itself if needed. The book inside includes a list of suggested songs for various wedding styles (formal, outside, morning, etc.). From the classical neophyte to the seasoned classical music expert, this CD set will meet if not exceed expectations.

Just one note..........2003-06-07

I have not heard this album, so I cannot rate it as a whole. (The form made me include a rating, but disregard that.) However, I want to point out that track 36, the Pie Jesu from Gabriel Faure's Requiem is - well, from a requiem, a mass for the dead. The Pie Jesu is a lovely, gentle movement, and it has a beautiful and pure sound that does seem to fit the mood of a wedding. The Latin words, however, mean "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them everlasting rest," where "them" refers to the dead.

A TIMELESS DISCO CLASSIC... deserves to be rediscovered!.......2006-09-16

This was one of the best, most juicy latin-disco tracks EVER!!! DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD is a classic!!! That latin rhythm with that brass... and the guitars... ooohhhh so so sexy!!!

I bumped into this CD quite by accident. I never thought I'd ever see it re-released. My folks bought me the LP when I was a kid somewhere back in the 70's... and I rememeber I loved that song.

Years later, I found it in one of those Disco compilations CDs... but it was the short 3-minute version. And I always got the feeling the original track was much longer...

16 minutes, actually... split into two continuous tracks: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Esmeralda Suite".

Musical extravaganzas like this... only in the 70's. And here it is complete! With brass, strings, everything but the kitchen sink! :P

Now... the 4th track You're My Everything is also a great ballad. One of those slow songs strictly for hot moments (It's all oh so 70's!!!).

And the 5th track is also a great disco song.

This album is such a great experience... I'm really sorry I never thought of getting it before.

60's Rock goes 70's Latin Disco.......2005-09-13

I first heard this in the 70's. There are a couple great songs: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" & "Esmeralda Suite" which really get you going. Of course the required cover of "Gloria" is here too. The rest is so so at best, but I can listen to the first two over and over. And by the way...I HATE DISCO!

REAL Disco.......2005-09-09

Considered an 'underground' disco track, the title track 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' and 'Esmarelda Suite' (which sigue together) with a total playing time of almost 16 minutes, just oozes class and sophistication. Boney M/Bee Gees it aint! This is REAL disco from the 70's. You won't be disappointed with adding this album to your collection. The other 3 tracks are so-so (and were never played in the clubs). However for the aforementioned tracks, the album is worth every cent. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Buy it now.

With Let The Music Play: The Best of Shannon, this legendary dance floor diva's biggest hits—from her '80s heyday and her successful '90s comeback—are finally available on a single disc. This album is a boon to collectors, since much of her material as been out of print for years, and completely unavailable in the CD era.

In 1983, the then unknown singer sang on a dance track produced by neophytes Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa. Within a few weeks, the 12-inch of "Let The Music Play" was being spun by every DJ in New York City. Shannon followed this success up with a string of chart-topping dance singles, but soon left the music business for a successful stage-acting career. In 1995, she returned to music with the European-only single "It's Got To Be Love" and appearances on singles by Afrika Bambaataa and Sash!, the latter of which made the U.K. Top Ten in 1998.

truth be told... Shannon was actually one of the top dance divas of the mid-1980's, she had hit after hit in the clubs, but after the dismal failure of her third album, "Love Goes All The Way", she quit music for a long while.

This set compiles all of her classic mid-1980's r&b singles, as well as a few latter-recordings. Making it the best Shannon collection on the market.

However, let's go to the negative points.
- As the cd clocks in at 68 minutes, there's still room... but yet ShoutFactory has included the severely edited version of Let The Music Play here, which cuts off an entire minute from the 45/single version. LTMP is Shannon's all time classic hit, the song everyone knows and loves by her... what is there to lose by adding that one extra minute to make the song the classic we love and remember it as? All of the other songs are complete.
- "Do Tha Wrong Thang". I don't know why this was included on here. It's an awful over-long track that has a few vocals by Shannon but is mostly a few rappers. The song has no tune or melody in the slightest and drags on and on and on....
- Outside of "Move Mania" (which was a UK top 10 hit), Shannon's more recent material has been very bland and formulaic. I would've loved some more album cuts from the first two classic albums over the forgettable La Bouche knockoff "It's Got To Be Love" and the in-one-ear, out-the-other dullness of "The Best Is Yet To Come"

However, since reissues of Let The Music Play and Do You Wanna Get Away are pretty much out of the question, this set is the most affordable and convienient way to get Shannon's classics on CD, even though "Move Mania" is the only post-1986 track worth a second listen here.

A trip down memory lane.......2005-10-12

A great compilation of Shannon's. The only thing that would have made this complete would have been the addition of the song "Dancin". All in all, a disc worthy of purchase. I enjoyed it alot.

Why include a severly truncated version of her biggest hit??.......2005-06-09

Shannon's biggest hit, the one enduring song in her catalogue, is "Let The Music Play," one of the 1980s' most immortal dance songs. Finally, a greatest hits is issued and one can have these songs on CD...but the version of "Let The Music Play" included her is a severely edited version, not even the single version, which I used to have on a 45!! What on earth was the logic behind that? And yet we get the full length versions of her non-hits. What a bummer. Also missing is "It's Over Love," her late 1990s collaboration with Todd Terry which was a NUMBER ONE HIT on the dance charts. What were the people who put this together smoking????

Shannon was one of my favorite artist from the 80s. Her strong vocal combined with the genius of Chris Barbosa and Mark Liggett production team made the Let the Music Play album timeless.

And just out of the blues, I found out that Shout Factory was releasing a best of album and I was excited. Well I bought the CD and I was bitterly disappointed. The sound quality is good but not excellent. They could have at least remastered it.

And also there was a MAJOR blunder. How did this album pass Quality Inspection?? One of my favorite energized songs "One Man" is not transfered correctly. There's an annoying noise flickering at 2.11 min

I never knew who she was in da 80's, all I knew was that, I loved her song "Let the music play" and I loved her voice. Well its safe to say that I will be buying all of her work. A+++

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).
