Amazon.com's Best of 2001
"I know an island where the people are kind / And the rest of the world seems far away / Maybe it's only in the back of my mind / But I know when I go that's where I'll stay." One could not wish a better end result for the late Kirsty MacColl, whose last album opens with this prediction. Tropical Brainstorm serves as a sunny and joyous bookend on a career cut tragically short. Musically, it is a bit of a departure, favoring vibrant Latin-flavored flourishes over the slightly darker jangle of earlier material. There is, however, no mistaking the album's creator from a lyrical perspective. "Treachery" giddily turns the star-fan scenario on its head, imagining MacColl stalking a fan who has abandoned her for the musical flavor of the month. "Here Comes That Man Again" is a decidedly naughty and wise survey of cyberculture's impact on modern romance. In "Us Amazonians," a hearty romp that's easily as good as anything off of Paul Simon's The Rhythm of the Saints, the narrator punches out her true love to show him what's truly important in life. These are not your ordinary pop songs, and that's a fitting way for things to end, if they had to. MacColl always held a singular place in Anglo-pop. She was equal parts Morrissey as a less self-obsessed heterosexual woman and Flannery O'Connor as pop star. In other words, unique, and an incredibly precious resource for music to lose. --Bob Michaels
Customer Reviews:
Fun CD!.......2007-05-18
Kristy's songs are funny, sometimes a bit raunchy, and entertaining. What a tragic loss that there will be no more.
Fabulous Fun.......2007-02-08
Witty lyrics, catchy tunes with a latin beat. I just love this CD. So many quotable lines, but I think my favorite is: "He said, 'Won't you walk up and down my spine?/It makes me feel strangely alive.'/I said, 'In these shoes?/I doubt you'd survive.'"
I do have to say the last 3 "bonus tracks" take away from, rather than add to the overall effect (I usually stop after "Designer Life"), but the rest of the CD is so good it still gets 5 stars.
Spectacular album in every way.......2007-01-11
If an album could express the complexity and essential qualities of a person, this is one. Sure, it's a great dance album with big chunky Cuban overtones. And sure, it would be hard to find someone who this album would not appeal to, its likeability is so complete. But the artist reaches the listener on so many levels simultaneously. It's a pure and pleasurable assault that renders the listener helpless with amazement. On the surface, a fun romp, but underneath, deeply profound. I could not get enough of it, and wore out my first CD. The joy and abandonment and humor and wit the album displays is masterful. If I could given it a hundred stars, it wouldn't be enough.
The good and the bad.......2006-08-23
I loved the beginning if this cd! Very rhythmic and the lyrics are brilliant. The middle of this cd is also very good, and again, brilliant lyrics. Almost all women can relate to her stories with a resounding "Me too!" I have listened to parts of this cd over and over and over again. The ending is, well...the ending is...?? It is like being served a wet fish after a fabulous meal. It ends with a flop and just doesn't sit well. Bottom line - I would purchase this cd again despite the ending because the rest of it is so good!
fun and honest songs.......2006-07-10
A friend made a copy of this CD for me, but I loved it so much I had to get my own shiny new copy. The songs on this CD are fun and funny; honest and sometimes sad. Kirsty MacColl manages to give you a glimpse into her world as an entertainer and as a woman. I have had a great time singing, dancing, and humming along to the whole CD.

maybe 4.5 star solo debut.......2005-05-11
As the more known member of the Penthouse Players Clique, Playa Hamm finally releases his own solo album after being around for about a decade. Packed with 16 songs, 2 are ok, 1 is a near classic, and the rest are good or great songs. The lyrics aren't the greatest but the beats are great, as with most albums from people who are boyz with DJ Quik (even though he had nothing to do with this project). The great production is handled from some well known Cali producers, Battlecat did 6 songs, Blaqthoven did 5, Brian G did 3, Mr. Iroc beats did 1, and DJ Scratch & G-Man Stan pitched in together to do 1, with some co-production done by the "Fonksta" Robert Bacon and Hamm himself. Guests are on almost half the songs. Amust have for west coast rap fans.

a respectable comeback for a west coast legend.......2002-05-02
playa hamm started out as one half of the underrated group penthouse players clique with tweed cadilac and special guests dj quik and eazy e. now hamm has come back with layin hands. this is a respectable piece of work that, alas, has none of dj quiks production. check out the hypnotizing beat on no prints. classic. for those who miss the clique, look no further. tweed guests on some of the music to allow for a bit of the old school. overall it is worth a spin.

Power Metal
Customer Reviews:
Amazing staying power.......2007-01-04
I listened to this CD more times in 2006 than any other that I own. If you love the Hammerfall and Dream Evil style of power metal, then you absolutely NEED to get Brainstorm! I really hope they put out another CD soon, as I need more! MORE!
Symptom Of A Bigger Problem.......2006-12-20
Yup, I can definitely see what some people have been saying for years. Power metal has become bland and generic. Unfortunately, I've heard a lot of that lately in several CD's I've bought. This one at least has a cool cover.
The musicianship is good and the singer has the pipes, but the compositions are so bland that after my requisite four listens, I cannot remember a single thing about this album. I mean, it's not horrible by any stretch. It is just nothing to write home about either. These guys have so much talent and technical ability. Maybe they need to get some outside songwriters to help them. Maybe they should also mix things up a bit for variety.
Only recommended for the die hard power metal fans.
Awesome.......2006-11-14
This is by far one of the best albums that I have heard from any band, my favorite track(and probably one of my all time favorite songs) on this is Inside the monster, also another one to check out from this band is the album Metus Mortis, Brainstorm is one of the best Power metal bands out there check them out I guarantee you won't regret it.
Wow!.......2006-11-04
Okay, I'm going to make this one short because I think it is unneccessary to get into things here. This album $%$$^# ROCKS! To be honest, I did not ever hear about this band before until I was searching some metal bands on myspace and took a listen and heard "Inside the Monster" and thought it was an amazing song. How the heck did these guys go unnoticed? I am a huge metalhead, to a certain extent for I really don't care at all for these death metal bands, i.e. Lamb of God and other 2nd stage acts at Ozzfest. I love loud guitars and such, don't get me wrong but I can't handle a band that has a singer that, well, can't sing.
Anyways, getting off topic. This band is great musically and they seem to bring something fresh that is missing in metal nowadays. And not only are they good at thundering metal but they can go ballad to like on "Heavenly". Point being, buy this album now. You will not regret it.
Pretty good Modern metal.......2006-07-26
I'm gonna start this review off with a little heavy metal history lesson. Boring i know but it said share your thoughts so i thought this might help potential buyers of this cd to see what they're getting.
As we all know heavy metal was at its highest peak during the '80s and late '70s. Motorhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica and others controlled the airwaves and started quite a large following for themselves. But then during the late '80s and predominantly the '90s heavy metal lost it a bit, due to the introduction of the Seattle grunge scene, 'hair' metal and all that other pop/hip hop/rap crap that spawned. Not only that but issues in the metal scene as well, Metallica was going soft and in a weird direction, Halford left Priest, Bruce and Adrian left Maiden and Motorhead wasn't dishing out any Ace of Spades to say the least. All these factors led to a gigantic lull in good metal being released in the '90s, but round about '97 Hammerfall released Glory to the Brave which IMO changed it all.
Now i must confess i am a bit of power metal freak but not to a die hard extent. Anyway the point being that after that point heavy metal began to revive and boom again. Bands like Edguy, Sonata Arctica, Primal Fear etc came about and fused the scene with all the great stuff that made heavy metal a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention a lot of creative stuff from the Swedish Melodic Death scene with In Flames, Meshuggah, Arch Enemy etc.
Now all that said and done onto the album!! Sorry went a bit overboard, but it's to help you get into a heavy metal mindset. And believe me when you listen to Liquid Monster it gets your head just thinking about good old heavy metal. I will confess something, i had never heard of Brainstorm before until i saw their name on a list here on Amazon. I remember one reviewer said that this album was the heaviest power metal he'd ever heard! So i thought hmmm lets check it out.
Liquid Monster is not a power metal album as such but more of a modern heavy metal album along the lines of say Firewind, Thunderstone and Mystic Prophecy (mostly) releases. The riffs are VERY heavy and crunchy. Solos are memorable to. The vocals are strong and done by Andy B Franck of Symphorce, who are also similar to this band. The guitars have a great modern tone and sound to them and utilize plenty chugging riffs, catchy licks and power chords. Dieter Bernert pounds the drums ferociously with plenty of double bass kicks and tom rolls. The standout song is really the first track 'Worlds are Coming Through' which is quite catchy. Also there are some keys and synthesizers sprinkled throughout the album but not to an overbearing extent. To tell you the truth i'm still not that familiar with the album and its songs but i do find that when i stick the CD in i usually play it from start to finish without skipping anything and enjoy it everytime. I bought the album from Amazon and i don't regret doing so one bit. I highly recommend this album to people who want traits of Maiden, Priest and Metallica but with an injection of modern sound. Hope that was helpful.

A Bright Star in Heaven.......2006-06-29
Following the tragic loss of Kirsty a few years back I assumed I had her entire catalog on CD .... Wrong! Up pops this gem as an Amazon Recommendation and into my wallet I dive. A fine cd with many standout tracks, particlarly, "In These Shoes?" and "England 2 Colombia 0". I love the way she plays with the Calipso rhythms, much as she did in her early years appearing as guest singer on several UK TV programs.
Tropical Brainstorm is great start to finish.......2005-09-18
This album is so well-written, performed, and produced that it continues to be a pleasure to hear over and over again. I suspect this is probably some of Kristy's best work, completely levereaged by her love of tropically inspired love of latin/afro-cuban music, men, leisure, and alcohol. There are some very talented performers on this album and you can tell that everyone had a fun time making it. Kristy's voice is very pure, and hearing her sing many of the lines in other languages is very alluring! If you heard "These Shoes" and wonder if you should buy the whole album, the answer is definitely "Yes".
Just Brilliant.......2004-03-25
This album is one of my very, very favorites. The lyrics are hilarious, and the music gets better the more you listen to it. You can't do without this one.
The Best.......2001-03-12
You know how you can have good albums, even favourite albums? But there is usually one track which is a bit duff. Not on 'Tropical Brainstorm'! You know how you can overplay an album over three months and then you don't listen to it for ages? Not 'Tropical Brainstorm'! You know how the charts today is filled with airheaded bimbo's, marketed solely on their looks although they cannot sing without that bloody awful voice modulator thing (And 'Yes' Britney, I'm talking about you!)...? Well, not Kirsty MacColl. Simply put, a damn fine artist unfairly taken from us, but a tremendous album. A 'must buy'!
Everyone On This Review Page Is Right!.......2001-01-23
I am from the US and was unaware that Tropical Brainstorm was even available until after Kirsty's accident. So, I immediately made the purchase(I am a fan going back to Kite and before) and, after recieving it, was more than not disappointed, I was overjoyed! Look, if you are one of those people who reads review pages like these, take the advice of all of the other reviewers and BUY THIS RECORD. Very few artists can move so effortlessly from somber to sweet to silly and not come off scattered or worse. Kirsty's was a rare gift and it's a shame she left us so early. If you can listen to any number of songs on this disc(Treachery, England 2 Columbia 0, Us Amazonians) and not walk away beaming and singing it out loud, you're not human. Get your credit card ready......

"Things we shared so long ago".......2007-02-04
Brainstorm is an interesting mixture of Queensryche and Judas Priest during their respective peak years. The former influence is especially noticeable with the splendid arrangements and sometimes unusual added touches such as singing a chorus in a different language or computerized backwash during a guitar break. The latter influence is apparent in the absolute heaviness that is brought to each song, some blistering guitar solos, and in the mostly mid-range vocals that sometimes elevate to shrieking heights reminiscent of Rob Halford. Normally this much obvious influence alone would be enough to downgrade an album, but the production value is extremely high and each song stands on its own force of will demanding to be heard. There is not a weak track on this album and for me, at least, this is a way to relive the glory days of the aforementioned bands with a modern day production sheen. Highly recommended. Thank you.
Great Listen!!.......2006-08-22
I am a Brainstorm fan as they have won me over with their brand of metal. This cd is not as good as Liquid Monster, but it still has plenty of pop to it. All the tunes are well written and the arrangements just rip right along. The sound quality is excellent and so is the musicianship.
Another stellar release!
Soul Temptation.......2006-02-27
I believe Soul Temptation is the better of the three cd's. Better than Metus Mortis and Liquid Monster. I combines the heaviness of Metus Mortis with the groove of Liquid Monster, while at the same time the awesome guitar riffs aren't drowned out by the double bass drums. This is definitely a must have any and all Brainstorm fans, and I look forward to hear what they come out with next.
A must for your collection.......2004-12-17
If you are like me and you surf Amazon and the net for excellent metal, add this to your collection, this is a keeper !!
This CD rates in the top 5% as a must have. The previous reveiwers cover most of what's great about this CD, the "trinity" is excellent.
Fantastic, a great surprise.
My Favorite Album of the Year So Far.......2004-06-07
"Soul Temptation" by Brainstorm -- I just can't stop listening to it. Totally caught me by surprise, especially "Highs Without the Lows", "Nunca Nos Rendimos", and "Soul Temptation".
The little trilogy and sound of the Egyptian tinged songs ending with "Soul Temptation" gives me chills every time I hear it. Screaming steel, kicking drums, I just don't see how you could at all wrong with this entire CD. I just love the particular punch of the instrumentals , the range and style of the vocals (lyrics). Add in the fact that as a gamble, for 10 dollars I got my favorite album of the year so far.

Funk Metal Rap Punk! (Not as bad as it may seem).......2007-04-02
I bought this cd back in 1994 a few months after it came out. I feel that it still holds up today as a marvelous fusion of rock, jazz, funk, punk and everything else you can think of (yes, even some rap!!!)...I know this sounds like a bit much, but all of the music tracks are fantastic! Phil Schlotterer can sing like an angel! Get this cd and you will find at least one new favorite song...

Ill be honset..........2005-06-17
Ive only listened to the samples but Ive got this ordered and it should be here in a few weeks. Anyway , Ive got Soul Temptation which is great and Liquid Monster which is phenominal. So im hoping that this severly underrated band will get some recognition. The thing with Brainstorm is if you hear the samples and think the 30 seconds you hear is great then well its not gonna be a surprise when you hear the whole song and realize that its just as amazing as you thought.
This album is WAY ,WAY UNDERATED!!!!!.......2004-06-24
Now true there are a few more catchy song's on the Soul Temptation album. But this album is alot faster with more double bass.So it's really a question of whether or not you like the more melodic power metal or the more Power speed metal approach. To me this group is AMAZING anyway's!And I just can't see how anyone could knock any of their album's.The only minor problem that I had with this album seemed to be corrected more on the next album, and that's the fact that sometimes the lead singer strives to sound like Dave Mustaine, and I think Megadeth fan's would love this aspect, but come on,how many Power metal fan's really listen to Mega Deth to begin with?Probably not that many. That is if there is any...
Potential great?.......2003-07-29
OK, Odds are against these guys ever breaking out in the U.S. but I must admit this band could be one of the contenders along with Iced Earth and Nevermore. Most every song is good, though slightly repetitive (Not nearly as bad as some albums I have heard). To me Brainstorm is somewhere between Iron Maiden and Countdown to extinction era Megadeth. Maybe "Soul Temptation" their newest cd will prove their potential. Worth owning if you like any of the mentioned bands.
The Previous Reviewer Has No Idea What They AreTalking About.......2002-01-21
This album is a fun, quality album of fun, quality power metal. Unfortunately, the album is also quite uniform to the German Power Metal Sound. Bands like Gamma Ray did it way earlier and way better. The album starts off with several solid entries, most notably Shadowland. The riffs are, without exception, simplistic and, for one reason or another, often sound similar. The chorus' are catchy and well thought out, as one would expect from an album of this sort. The album falters as it goes on with the weaker songs taking up the last several spots.
[...]. there is a whole sub-genre called SYPMPHONIC PM, which generally uses keys.[...].
Overall: Solid but nothing new or special. Maybe with time this band will grow to something original, but until then this is a good start. Unmemorable lyrics and too-similar song structure hampers the group. Still, you know you have a soft spot for cheesy PM, c' mon...admit it! No one will ever mistake these guys for Stratovarius or the prog/power kings SymX, but hey, its all in good fun
Iron Maiden with a speed metal twist........2001-12-27
I love the soaring vocals similar to Iron Maiden with a much faster stronger sound. Great Double Bass work. Terrific songs at the beginning especially "Metus Mortis", "Shadowland", and Checkmate in Red and I love the opening on "Into the Never". They have pretty good use of what seems to be a string section that reminds of Metallica's S&M (good or bad) Songs toward the end seem to lose some energy like "Behind" but overall a quality if not innovative metal album. metal blade records had some short samples up ...

Not bad for their debut on Metal Blade records........2007-01-07
Before Ambiguity, Brainstorm had a different singer and they released two albums on a German record label, called B.O. Records. The second release is supposedly pretty good, even without Andy B. Franck as the frontman. Unfortunately the first two albums are OOP and are almost impossible to find, if not indeed totally impossible. Hopefully Metal Blade will get the rights to release these some day.
Anyway, Brainstorm is a power metal band from Germany, but currently using an American as their singer. Symphorce's frontman, Andy B. Franck. Yep, he's pulling double duty.
So what do they sound like? Well, it's been said that they sound in between Nevermore and Iced Earth. I'm only really familiar with Iced Earth, so I can't really confirm the former. Well, so do they? I guess...I can hear the progressiveness of Iced Earth in there, with the change-ups of guitar riffs and whatnot, but that's about it. The vocals are nowhere near Matt Barlow or Tim Owens. That said, though, they're still pretty good. That is, they mesh well with the music.
Musically wise, Brainstorm is a power metal band that plays hard and heavy guitar riffs with well placed solos and clean vocals that give it the power metal sound. It's good. I've only got this album so far, but with the other three on order. I'm liking it so far. Hopefully the three newer albums can solidify my interest in this band, as it's one kind of sound that I've been craving lately. That is a power metal band that doesn't sound too whiney (or cheesey) with its vocals and lyrics.
Brainstorm : "Ambiguity".......2005-01-13
Incredible. This is Heavy Metal at it's finest. Old school Metal done the way it's meant to be done. If you're a fan of any old school Metal, you'll love Brainstorm. I have to say that "Ambiguity" takes me back to the 80's style of Metal. It's a mixture of Iron Maiden / Priest / and some Nevermore....
The production is great, and the songs here really pull you in with their lyrics, and overall power. Great CD. I also recommend Brainstorm's "Soul Temptation", another neck breaker!!!!

Brainstorm defines themselves with "Ambiguity".......2001-01-04
With this release, Brainstorm steals my "surprise of the year award" away from labelmates Jacobs Dream. Out of seemingly nowhere comes this veritable power metal tour de force, with a powerful and melodic sound that is extremely reminiscent of Angel Dust, but with perhaps slightly more apparent thrash- (Exodus, Metallica) and speed- (Helloween) metal influences. Angel Dust has been one of my favorite bands of late, and likewise this album came through bigtime. Although I'd rank _Ambiguity_ just a tad below the two Angel Dust albums that I own (mainly because this release demonstrates less progressive qualities), songs like "Demonsion", "Lost Unseen", and (especially) the eight and a half minute "Beyond My Destiny" are certainly on par with anything Angel Dust has ever done. In addition, the album's piano-driven token ballad, "Far Away", is a beautiful and passionate number, while the album's vibrant closer, "Perception of Life", is a short, fast-paced power metal track with an extremely catchy chorus that made me think of another brilliant album closer, the song "Glorious" off of Nocturnal Rite's _The Sacred Talisman_. Front to back, this really is a fabulous album -- while every song may not be incredible, there is not a single "skippable" track on the disc. Fans of Angel Dust definitely need to look into these guys; I'm very impressed.
What he said.......2000-09-15
Wow. I listened to this CD on my way home and was all prepared to give my review complete with reference to "Nights of Arabia" by Kamelot when I read the guy's review in Indianapolis. I couldn't have said it any better.
This is excellent speed power metal that is just a small step below Metalium. They stray from this style on two songs "Beyond My Destiny" which is more melodic and "Far Away" which is a flat out piano/acoustic song. I haven't read the lyrics on this latter one but it came across as too much of a love song for my tastes - not done with the right twist like "Sailorman's Hymn" by Kamelot to keep it from being sappy.
Andy B. Franck is an ideal vocalist for this type of music. He sounds like a combination of Harry Conklin (Jag Panzer), Bruce Dickinson, occasionally Zak Stevens, and Timo Kotipelto on the high notes.
Recently Brainstorm and Metalium have really proven to me that you don't have to be symphonic (see Kamelot, Blind Guardian) to play good power metal. Just need a ripping vocalist, a powerful rhythm section, and turn up the speed.
In this case, a Brainstorm is a great idea!.......2000-08-03
Given the recent resurgence of heavy metal, many record labels have gone on signing frenzies, grabbing up any kind of band with a gimmick or a hook, resulting in the overaturation of such goofs that are mirror images of already established, talented acts. Just as a few years ago when grunge came calling, signalling the end of many a fine metal ensemble, these trendy bounce bands will find an unpleasant demise with little long term commercial viability. It is within this realm, as Obi Wan Kenobi once said, "you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villiany: we must be cautious! "
Well, fear not, and throw caution into the wind and take a voyage with Brainstorm, a promising European outfit that display all the required elements of power crunching audio delight. "Crush Depth" opens the affair with driving guitars and bottom heavy ryhthmic pulsating, chock full of vocal might and a shouting chorus leading the listener to instant recognition of a new contender in the metal circle. The quality continues with the galloping riffs of "Tear Down the Walls" and the headbanging "Arena", both making use of mid paced thrash style beats and harmonized guitars that provide melody without sacrificing abrasiveness. "Beyond my Destiny" switches gears and is a magnificent power ballad that Queensryche would have been proud to have recorded when they were still metal, and provides the vehicle for which singer Andy Franck bellows to the world that he has the pipes to contend for the heir apparent of vocal supremacy...what an upper range he displays throughout the album, with a near perfect combination of powerful roars and quiet emotion.
Another powerful moment is the middle eastern themed "Maharaja Palace" which riffs along like a snake creeping to the commands of it's charmer, waiting to strike out from the speakers with it's dual guitar venom. Admittedly, not quite the same effect as Kamelot's "Nights of Arabia", but mesmerising nonetheless. And speaking of Kamelot, Sasha Paeth, the producer of their magnificent new album "the Fourth Legacy," and Miro, who contributed keyboards, lends a hand to Brainstorm as well, so it is no surprise that Brainstorm reminds me a little of a Kamelot with more pre-thrash oriented guitar textures and rhythms.
Brainstorm has given fans of late 80's power metal something to be hungry for, and hopefully, this release will benefit from enough hype in the underground to sustain more long term interest. Personally, I don't want this new wave of melodic mid tempo thrashing to go away like it did some years ago, and newer bands like Brainstorm and Eidolon, along with familiar mainstays Iced Earth, In Flames, Nevermore, and Lefay (definitely check them out! ) will carry on the tradition of Metal Church, Overkill, "good" Metallica, and the like. For fans of that type of metal, Brainstorm is worth checking out.

Album Description
BRAINSTORM was one of the most talented bands of the Seventies German Progressive rock scene. Released in 1972 and often regarded as a long-lost gem, the eponymous album showcased complex music with unusual harmonies and compositions based upon many different themes, enhanced by flute and distorted organ. This is dynamic and inventive Progressive rock, somewhere between SOFT MACHINE, CARAVAN and MOVING GELATINE PLATES. Three bonus tracks recorded during radio programmes in 1971 complete this excellent Musea reissue. To be rediscovered !
Customer Reviews:
Good Soft Machine-like jazz rock from Germany.......2007-02-09
I was first exposed to the music of Brainstorm through a sampler of extremely obscure European prog bands (e.g. Osage Tribe (from Italy) that I received along with the Wallenstein CD I purchased. Although I did not care too much for most of the music on the sampler, the German band Brainstorm really stood out as a sophisticated group of musicians that fused Supersister/Soft Machine - like jazz rock inclinations with some progressive rock (I also hear some Brian Auger influences in there as well). My curiosity piqued, I snapped this 1972 album up and was generally extremely impressed.
The musicians on Smile a While include Eddy van Overheidt (organ; electric piano; clavinet; and lead vocals); Rainer Bodensohn (electric bass guitar; flutes); Roland Schaeffer (soprano and tenor saxophones; clarinet; bass guitar; acoustic/electric guitars; and vocals); and Joe Koinzer (drums and percussion). The guys are all great musicians (most of them were formally trained to varying degrees) and there is some excellent ensemble work and individual soloing on the album. Eddy is a fantastic player and was heavily influenced by Canterbury musicians Dave Stewart (Egg) and Mike Ratledge (Soft Machine) (I love Eddy's jazzy "comping" on the clavinet).
The six tracks on the album range in length from 1'26" to the 15'31" Smile a While suite. In large part, the pieces revolve and a few "head" themes over which there are woodwind solos (there is also a very jazzy drum solo on Bosco Biati Weib Alles that emphasizes cymbal work). Stylistically, these guys were exploring similar musical territory as 1970-1972 Soft Machine, and as such, there is a lot of jazzy chord structures on this album. The band also likes to use odd meters in a similar manner to Egg. Although most of the music is instrumental, Watch Time Flow By is a short vocal track that is somewhat light-hearted and not as serious as the other compositions. Snake Tango is another short, fun track that would not have been out of place on a Frank Zappa album.
This Musea release is pretty good and contains loads of informative liner notes and photos of the group. The five bonus tracks are pretty good too and for the most part represent earlier incarnations of the band.
All in all, this is a great album by a band that was heavily influenced by the Canterbury scene in England. Smile a While is highly recommended along with albums by Supersister (Present from Nancy (1970); To the Highest Bidder (1971)); Soft Machine (Third (1970); Fourth (1971); and Five (1972)); and Egg (Egg, 1970; The Polite Force, 1971). Before I forget, the first album by the French band Moving Gelatine Plates might also be of interest.
Brainstorm - 'Smile A While' (Musea) French import CD.......2005-02-01
I give it 4 1/2 stars.Originally released in 1972 as this was the German band's first of just two(2)lp's,better than it's '73 follow-up,'Second Smile'(see my review).Took me a LONG time to land a copy of this disc. What drew my interest was their mis-titled track on the three-disc compilation,'Space Box-1970 And Beyond...Space,Krautrock&Acid Trips'.Their cut was titled "Number 6",but it turned out to be a portion of THIS disc's fifteen-minute six-part title track "Smile A While",which is probably the best song on the entire CD.Overall, just a great jazzy/kraut piece to trip out on.Other good ones are "Zwick Zwick" and "You Are What's Gonna Make It Last" and the three live snippets from their 1971 Sud West Funk(SWF)Radio show, the thirteen-minute wailing "Thesen & Antithesen","Einzug Der Elefanten" and "You Knock Me Out".Some highly-skilled playing here.Top notch,in fact that is if you enjoy this genre.Comes with a 12-page booklet that features text and photos.Might appeal to SOME fans of Soft Machine,Supersister,Caravan and Morpheus.
