Album Description

Following the groundbreaking success of A Plump Night Out and 2003's Eargasm the Plump DJs are back with 70 minutes of the highest quality blistering breaks. With 11 original tracks and 2 remixes, Andy Gardner and Lee Rous have called upon some of the scene's biggest names such as The Freestylers, Soul Of Man, The Drumattic Twins, Lee Coombs and Italian sensation Madox to bolster this already heavyweight package.

Opening with the hip-hop inspired `A Plump Lesson', the album wastes little time warming up with a chunky remix of Lee Coombs' `Shiver'; and on to the catchy `Dr Dub' which samples the Thompson Twins' `Doctor Doctor'. Alongside the already released and hammered singles `Soul Vibrates' and `Bullet Train', the award-winning Plump DJs deliver an album that also features the forthcoming `Get Kinky' and `Acid Hustle' singles.

Whilst the Plump DJs swept the board at this year's Breakspoll Awards winning Best Producers, Best Remix (Freestylers - "Push Up") and Best Single ("Soul Vibrates"), the proof will always be found in the pudding.

And proof indeed for all of the above can be found here in extra large, full fat portions as the Plumps reaffirm their status as the biggest name in breaks and one of the hottest acts in dance music today.

4 out of 5 stars It's the Plumpers...........2007-06-05

Do they ever miss? If you like their other stuff you'll like this.

5 out of 5 stars Ecclectic breakbeat from top to bottom........2006-01-31

If you're a fan of the Plumpsters, you will not be disappointed by this artist/mix album (75% of the tracks are by the Plump DJ's, yet it's mixed). They fill in gaps between their own songs, with matching high energy vibes, and punishing breaks.

The entire album is filled with electro and acid house, never getting too progressive or dark. It's funky house, injected with the tings and energy these guys are known for. There really are only two weak tracks out of 17, and no bad ones at all. My two least favorite were Dr. Dub (rather simple and really doesn't go anywhere) and Smartbomb (borders on cheese). The companion to the recently released single Dr. Dub is called Blackjack, which is sadly not on here, but I found to be more enjoyable than it's EP headliner.

As for killer tracks, my favorite is the echoing beats of Redshift, followed by Hell Up in Harlem, and Acid Hustle. The best non-Plump track is easily their remix of the Freestylers Push Up, which is right near the culmination of the meat and potatoes of the mix, tracks 7-15.

Bullet Train is already a smash, and as far as Get Kinky, I love the beat and fast pace, but I'm not completely sold on the recycled Missy Elliot lyrics.

Overall, one to listen to straight through without any trouble at all. A clear winner for these Dj's of electro breaks.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic...mix album.......2005-12-27

Had to admit it.the opening to this album was kinda weak...its cliche mix album stuff..things do get moving and grooving after track 3 "Dr Dub" ..had to admit i was bopping and grooving to gems such as "smartbomb", "smells like naples" "soul vibrates" to name a few...The plump djs did a good job with the freestylers "push up"..make it sound more fist thumping..

Plump Djs are legends in the making...or are they already...?

3 out of 5 stars More Love, More Lotion!.......2005-10-14

If you mix it all up, Saturday Night Lotion is a success.

It's not a perfect album for sure, but I like it. There are a few outstanding tracks, my favourite being the intro and track 10. Existing fans of the famous Plump sound will love this album as it remains tricky and happy as ever, with fun buzzes and bleeps in all the right places- if you're looking for dark sounds, look elsewhere!

Beatwise, it's closer to Y4k by Hyper, or Y4k by Phil K than DJ Ils or Way Out West. Fans of fast-paced, very complex, or aggressive breaks won't find much joy in this album; but if you're looking for good vibes and rhythms on a long drive, count on the Plump DJs keep you company.

Amazon.com

A revue created for the Whitney Museum's Composers' Showcase series (and sometimes known as You're Gonna Love Tomorrow), A Stephen Sondheim Evening collects songs with music and lyrics by Sondheim in a live 1983 concert featuring a top cast of Liz Callaway, Cris Groenendaal, Bob Gunton, George Hearn, Steven Jacob, Judy Kaye, and A Little Night Music's Victoria Mallory, with a special appearance by Angela Lansbury. While many of the songs were somewhat obscure at the time, they're rather familiar decades later, including selections from 1954's Saturday Night and outtakes from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. And though the Fender Rhodes sounds dated, the cast and the performances are excellent. Callaway's "What More Do I Need" is still definitive, and Sondheim himself accompanies Lansbury's "Send in the Clowns" and leads the singers on "Old Friends." --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars By no means bad!!!.......2005-01-04

I like this Sondheim Revue. The performers are good, and I appreciate that they don't try to be "clever" with Sondheim's music. They just performs it as it is written.

The orchestrations are...well...slim. But the synths aren't disturbing, except in Miles Gloriosus.

Otherwise some rare SJS gems are included here. And Angela Lansbury's Clowns is one of the few versions of this song worth listening to (it's not a bad song, but done so many times:P).

3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!!.......2004-05-28

This is one of the better Sondheim tributes, but because RCA cut out 2 numbers from the original 2 lp set to fit on one disc, I can only give this 3 stars. I owned the original lp set, and wasnt aware of this omission until after I bought the cd. One of the best songs on the original, You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through with Liz Callaway (among others) from Follies was cut. Inexcusable! There were several other lesser songs they could've cut instead if time was a problem. (Poems and There's Something About a War being two of them) In small print in the booklet it says the 2 cut songs are available on Collected Sondheim. Yeah, like I want to shell out 50 bucks to get those 2 songs when I have everything else on that compilation? If you havent heard the original set, you'll probably love this recording and there is a lot to love, including Angela Lansbury singing Send In the Clowns with Sondheim on the piano. But if you have heard the original LPs, Buyer Beware! Shame on you, RCA!!!

3 out of 5 stars Atrocious! Dont be fooled!.......2000-04-29

This recording is really realllllllllly bad. The songs are terrific, of course, although the selection seems rahter arbitrary. And it is terrific to have a recording of lost gems like House of Marcus Lycus and Invocation. But otherr than that, this CD just stinks! The arrangements were scaled down to a piano (which really seems like its being piped in from a different concert hall) and a wince-inducing synthesizer. The voices are uniformly distant and tinny, the result - i assume - of poor mic placement. And WHO is this Stephen Jacob person, and how did he get it into his head that he's a singer? Every time he opens his mouth - I kid you not - I shudder. I was kind on this CD - I give it 3 stars only because it has some great songs on it, and Judy Kaye's Another Hundred People is very very good. But other than that, this is worthless.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful recording of some great Sondheim.......2000-04-13

I was at this concert, and this recording captures the excitement that the performers generated that night. A lot of Sondheim's best songs, and a generally strong group of singers. It's unfortunate that the CD release is missing two of the numbers that were performed that evening (and were included on the original LP release). Judy Kaye's "Being Alive" is a particularly glorious highlight of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars I just wish I'd been there!.......1999-09-09

Live performances are tricky to record, and the result is often not nearly as satisfying as attendance at the event itself. This album, though, is different. "Brilliant" about sums it up. Besides including numbers that had been part of recorded scores before, it includes some that were cut from various musicals, or were never produced at all. Not only is Bob Gunton's performance of "Pretty Little Picture" far better than that on the original "Forum" cast album, it is, I think, done more in the fashion Sondheim intended. And two of the "cut" "Forum" numbers are delicious: "In the House of Marcus Lycus" is delightfully sly and filled with double-entendre, and George Hearn revels in the witty lyrics; and "There's Something About A War" is screamingly funny, especially at the point the soldiers lose control gloating about "houses to destroy --Hey! women to enjoy-- hey! statues to deface - hey! - mothers to debase - hey!...". Even the wonderful scoring for small ensemble works perfectly. (In "Something about a war" the fanfare, in the original cast album scored for brass, is performed by a synthesizer, and sounds wonderfully satirical, reminding one of Marvin Martian from the Warner Brothers cartoons.) The numbers from the (at the time) unproduced "Saturday Night" are great, especially Victoria Mallory's ecstatic "What More Do I Need?". The rendition of the moving "Someone In A Tree" is indeed, as others have pointed out, far better than on the "Pacific Overtures" album. And as a final pair of jewels we are treated to Angela Lansbury singing "Send In the Clowns", accompied by Sondheim himself, and then Sondheim and company singing "Old Friends" I could go on and on, but you get the picture. NOW, get the CD!

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed.......2007-06-24

I never tire of listening to this CD. I saw the show in Atlanta several years ago and then again in Nashville--featuring Mary Murfitt herself--and think it is wonderful. I'm always surprised at how such a hilarious/silly premise can set the stage for a moving exploration of friendship, relationships between parents and children, and the joy that comes in facing and conquering our fears. I remember sitting at the side of the theater in Nashville and watching the audience, which previously had been rolling with laughter, be spellbound when the cast began "Songs My Mama Sang" with that gentle mandolin strumming in the background. It was magic--and this "little" show with great writing and thoughtful performances made it happen. I only wish it were performed more often, but then it takes a really talented cast to make it work. There will always be the CD, though.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, fun music.......2000-05-03

This is a strong woman's musical with great music that doesn't get tiring to listen to. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to perform a great musical for theatre.

5 out of 5 stars A Train Wreck of X and the B-52s.......2003-04-26

I've seen these guys live probably 15 times in and around the Portland area. While their disk certainly does the guitar-driven, female vocals-led group justice, they are even better live. The music is polished without that canned, poppy and "garagey" sound of a lot of local bands. The lyrics are whimsical and poignant relating humorously real-life stories and those just conconcted in the band members' heads. Marie's vocals remind me of Maria McKee (Lone Justice), and she almost shakes Joe Cocker-like when she's belting out a tune. Their cover (and they do mostly originals which I appreciate) of "Whole Lotta' Jose" convulses with energy. Finally, their stage presence is phenomenal -- internally and with the audience, they seem to really enjoy their music. At one gig I attended, they threw out ding-dongs and twinkies to the crowd. That the three female singers dress in pleather, bowling shirts, and baby doll t's is not a bad thing. I spent some formative years in Southern California and the DTs tear into that surf culture with a decidely trailer park (X) flair. I'm a fan.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good live too!.......2003-01-24

I've seen this group play live in Portland before and I was surprised that the CD was just as good. I think it's great that they even cover their own stuff. I highly recommend you see them if you can.

    5 out of 5 stars funny.......2003-01-21

I LOVE DITTY TWISTERS. THE MUSIC IS GOOD AND SOME OF THE WORDS ARE FUNNY.

4 out of 5 stars Dixie Chicks with a twist of fun.......2003-01-14

I love the sound. The 3 singers blend beautifully when called for in the song, but lead singer can belt it out with the authority of a j. joplin with polish. The songs are fun, well written--most by the band but there is a great version of Aerosmith's Walk This Way, which showcases the lead singer's voice--slower, insinuating with a southern tinge. The music is infectuous, bouncy and simply good listening.
