Recorded in a single day at Paisley Park, Prince has confounded audiences yet again by recording a progressive jazz album with only four cuts--each named for a point on a compass--and clocking in at 14:00 minutes. If that wasn't enough, there isn't a single lyric on the almost hour-long disc. Like many before him, the musical savant has decided to let the music do the talking. But in Prince's case it does so, brilliantly. He has fashioned a musical lattice of fascinating conversations that are both compelling and eccentric--veering from the anxious and menacing to the soothing and deeply rhythmic--at times conjuring the specters of Sun Ra, at others, strangely Metallica. Begun as a mere jam session among the latest members of NPG, Prince has made his most collaborative record ever as he mostly plays guitar and leads his deft-handed band from the One Nite Alone tour into uncharted territory. They make seamless swings from "North's" ambient cohesiveness--led masterfully by Rhonda Smith's liquid bass--to the almost head-banging lumbering beast of "East," into the smooth elegant jazz of "West," which freefalls from a sinuous rhythmic R&B groove into a majestic and almost funereal slice of brainy pomp rock, before scaling the slippery slope of space rock on "South." It would be tempting to say that this is Prince's homage to his recently-deceased parents' stint in the Prince Rogers Trio, but it is far too forward sounding to only be a tribute. This was definitely worth the money. At first I was a little skeptical but as I listened to it over and over again I found a deeper appreciation. I think that I was expecting something else at first. This was similar to One Night Alone but just instrumental.

As a long time Prince fan, this doesn't disappoint me at all, especially after his Madhouse CDs in the 80s! Prince continues to shine on here with four instrumentals of pure jazz!

The problem with critics in general, is that they tend to always try to compare and completely define what they are critiquing. Take a different approach and start by accepting and feeling what is there. Prince is roguishly experimenting on this album; having a great time and sharing some musical statements with those that would listen. Laid back, smooth, soulful, jazzy, fun and moderately engaging. Shed any concept of genre and simply enjoy.

This is a 60 minute terrific cd. I listen to Prince's music for a long time but I have been impressed for this smooth, jazzy, funky joint. Especially recomended to listen to at night with a fine bottle of wine and a cigar.

N.E.W.S is an incredible showcase of instrumental jam-fest. John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith, Renato Neto and Eric Leeds join Prince in this 56 minute opus! Prince's N.E.W.S is a 4 track instrumental jazz style album with no lyrics. Perfect album when you have a hard day at work and want to relax. Eric Leeds delivers amazing saxophone depth! Rhonda Smith lays down some infectious bass grooves. John Blackwell is on point with solid drum beats. Renato Neto's beautiful piano will take you to cloud 9. Prince makes his guitar gently weep! N.E.W.S. is a power fantastic journey. Allstar musicians come together to create beautiful instrumental music. Quality album...I just wish there were more tracks. Prince's N.E.W.S will take you away!

No Doubt: The MOST Under-rated, Under-played, Under-promoted, Un-known, Un-heard of, Un-seen album that I can even think of in THE UNDERGOUND. In the spirit of BDP (KRS-One for those that dont know), 3rd Eye Vision (Heiroglyphics), Lupe Fiasco and Mr. West Himself (to add a few well known and, in their own time, underrated, Highly Intelligent artists), One.Be.Lo (aka: OneManArmy) front man for the S-U-B-T-E-R-R-A-N-E-O-U-S Crew (and yes, they do it the best!), one-half of the would-be legendary Binary Star (Senim Silla is also the bomb, check him out on Sleeper Cell Records), one-half of the would-be classic Trackazoids, and the One Man who "the only paraphanelia [he] need to rock the spot is One Hip-Hop Fan, and it dont stop. Without a Mic, without a Beat with no DJ. Without a Pen/Pad, without a Blunt or Fifth of E.J. Without a doubt [he] still turn it out without a delay. On the track [he'll] beat your whole team without a relay." Yes: Genius is the word you are looking for.

From the begining, Subterraneous has been a WaterWorld (Michigan, for the un-educated) staple. One.Be.Lo, Majestic Legend, Octane and Illite (whose album "Forgotten...Choosen" is also Tops), Decompose (unfortunately I have not had the pleasure to check out the new album "Decompositions"), Kodac, Dj Phrikshum (if you figure out who that is, I'll give you a cookie!) and the Entire Sub Crew, who you may not love but you know Loves You, have been producing albums, rockin shows at the Blind Pig (another Ann Arbor staple), teachin the kids what Hip-Hop should be, even keeping up with their academic pursuits (check out One.Be.Lo's Double-S-A.). Yes, the Can do it ALL.

If I were trapped on a desert island with only one CD...it would probably be Outkast, "ATLiens" (sorry, I'm a bad lier)...
BUT! If I could only listen to one Lable for the rest of my life...it would be the SUB.

Trust me. I've seen the man at the show, sharing the stage with RJD2, Blueprint, GhostFaceKillah, DEL (not no phoney phranchise!), and yes, I've even seen him steal the show!
I've seen him in the crowd, shakin the hands, dancin with the fans, givin props to those that deserve it, and kickin out those that deserve it as well! (please, dont drink and dance...its bad for everyone)
He said it himself, "you buy the CD for Ten, and I'll sign it for Free." And yes, he will!! (Much thanks to my Bro for the SUB-Crew poster from Tha Zoo, best birthday present EVER!)
Call me PlayaHater if it'll make you feel better! But buy the disc, listen to the disc, and when you're in the MI, come to the show. I promise, you wont be upset.

One Be Lo is hands down the most talented emcee out there. There is not a weak track on here. enecS eht Kcab, Deceptacons, and Rocketship are the standouts. I could easily have just listed three others tracks and been right.

i love this album.onebelo is one of my favorite indie artist,so when i received this as a b-day gift last year i knew i was in for a treat.this is what a concept album should sound like.there were no weak topics plus you can tell everything was well thought out.the production(mostly by himself & the trackezoids)compliments lo's liquid flow.i recomend this to any binary star fan or anyone just curious to who onebelo is.copp this,you won't regret it.

            4 out of 5 stars harsh industrial rhythms but some bubblebathy bits too.......2002-01-01

            a good collection of otherwise hard to find singles & rarities. much more engaging then other afx collections of this sort (i'm thinking particularly of the caustic window compilation, which is mostly unlistenable acid noise). these tracks have marvelous clanging rhythm... a nerdy thing i used to do when listening was to concentrate on each separate sound layer and try to simultaneously focus on each-- the hi hat, the bass, the countless miscellaneous noises. although the relentless industrial poundings of tracks like 'flaphead' may daunt, they're leavened by more delicate melodies such as analogue bubblebath I. not a big fan of the digeridoo but there are some funny samples to be found... "are you one of those girls for whom time stands still once a month?" and, one of my favorite afx moments, when the helicopter acid bubbling of phloam (or is it poly-c?) abruptly halts and a magical fairy-child's voice sings, "the flowerrrs that bloom / in the warmth of the sun / are there to be loved / by everyone..." and then *WOO* the acid bubbling kicks in again!!

            good stuff. recommended for fans of earlier afx, especially 'quoth'

            There are great songs on here... but because it's a compilation, I find the ordering of the tracks to be a bit capricious. This is definitely not a place to start if you are interested in RDJ. 'Didgeridoo' is a stunning gem though... and probably worth the price of the album.

            I'd have to say this is probably the best example of RDJ's "techno" persona. Many of the songs are very 'odd' and eerily dark which makes for a very awesome listen! It's almost like the beats (many songs do have the persistant techno "thump-thump-thump-thump") were included as a joke, or a sadistic twist, "I dare you to dance to this" kinda thing. The techno-industrial noise/sounds are oddly interrupted by the pleasent "Analogue Bubblebath" and the semi-Gothic "Polynomial-C". Overall, this album is an excellant Aphex Twin experinece showing, as always, that he knows what he's doing and is VERY good at it.

            Anyone, even one not even remotely interested in idm and electronic music has to admit that aphex twin has definite skill. For those who do like that kind of music, he remains as one of the best, and by far THE MOST varied electronic artist ever. Whether it is ambient, drum and bass, or pure dance tracks, aphex twin is at the top of his game. THUS, when I heard of his classics album, I figured it would be a wondrous compilation of his most varied and best work. Instead it is a mix of the annoying, industrial, hard music which Richard makes just to annoy people. HOw could these be his classic tracks, they are his WORST tracks. Besides polynomial-C, and annalogue bubblebath, this is a compilation of some of the worst and hardest to listen to idm I have ever heard.

            Always Ready is a patriotic Americana compilation of two groups of recordings from the US Coast Guard Band. Selections 1-13 are marching band of field band music.             This disc is great for anyone who is a fan of rousing marches and big wind ensemble pieces. Even though the Coast Guard is the smallest of the Armed Forces branches, their band is just as talented and musically diverse as any of the larger branches. The majority of the disc is devoted to familiar Sousa marches and Coast Guard service marches. The last six are wonderfully American wind ensemble selections. I am considering enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard and, as a euphonium player, would love to be a part of a such a fine group of musicians.

            There was huge potential in this project, but it's really not been realised.

            They dogmatically attempt to reproduce notes and harmonies from the songs 'as is' rather than rework creatively to achieve an overall flow. Songs are also over-complicated rather than seeking a purity of sound and harmony. This really jars, as this is where Massive Attack excel. It also feels over-produced (trying to make up for poor composition?).

            I was hoping for something intelligently re-worked to fit the instruments used, such as Christopher O'Riley did superbly with Radiohead. Instead, this seems to be cashing in on the name rather than getting to the heart of the music.
