I Like Link Wray..........2007-05-31
The first chord of "Rumble" always makes me smile, as it reminds me of the original Svengoolie, (Those in Chicago in the early '70's know what I'm talking about). Remarkable that radio stations banned this tune for fear of youth riots!
It's a good compilation of Link's tunes, some silly, but you can tell the Link influence on all the tunes and fun.
Get the cd if just for "Rumble"!
Link Wray - The one you are looking for.......2007-05-12
If you've discovered Link Wray through Quentin Tarantino's moovies this album is *exactly* what you're looking for. Tracks 1 to 7 are original versions of the very best instrumentals from LW ("Rumble", "Fat Back", "Jack the Ripper", "Ace of Spades"...). The remaining isn't as good in my views but still brilliant rock guitar sound from the 50's.
The missing Link.......2007-05-07
I had a brief listen to this album on line but should have probably listened to more of the tracks available before I bought it. Very disappointing. Not recommended to anyone other than a die hard Link Wray fan.
Your LINK To A Better Life.......2007-01-23
Link Wray was the real deal-A true rock an roll rebel if there ever was one. He didn't want to play it safe. He wasn't interested in soothing your ears as much as he was jamming pencils in them, and I mean that in a good way. As we all know(or should know, way too many people don't), Link gave us the power chord and distortion, two things which practically no rock guitarist can now live without. He used these elements to create real down and dirty rock and roll that flips you the finger. Wray's name is unavoidable in the surf rock circles and is usually associated with that scene, probably because of the mostly instrumental nature, but I'd call it more rockabilly. But when listening to him, you don't get visions of happy-go-lucky teenagers shimmying and making out on the beach. The Outsiders is one thing that may come to mind. No-good, hell raisin', leather clad, motorcycle ridin' juvenile delinquents that have no respect for authority. Put it this way, if Dick Dale is the soundtrack to Frankie and DeeDee, Link is the soundtrack for Eric Von Zipper. There are a few more higher priced Wray collections floating around out there(Mr. Guitar is awesome and probably the best one), but this one's perfect for the curious. You get killer tracks from the late 50s up to the early 70s which prove that Link kicked ass no matter what decade he was playing in. Some folks here aren't too big on the few tracks with Link on vocals. Honestly, I wouldn't put much stock in that. You listen to Link sing Ain't That Lovin' You Baby, and tell me that ain't one of the sleaziest and hardest rockin' rockabilly tunes you've ever heard. Though Wray is highly praised, we can only hope that he receives some long overdue recognition for his contributions to rock music. I mean, no one sounded like this guy. Link is one of those guys that I hate hearing bands do covers of, coz no one can do it like him. Sure the music is sometimes repetitious, and it's quite simple. Anyone with a basic knowledge of guitar can probably play a Link Wray song, but that's not the point-it's HOW he plays. Being a guitar genius has squat to do with how technical or how many notes you can squeeze out(you listening to this, Malmsteen, you lifeless robot, you!). When you listen to Link, you can hear blood, sweat, tears(not the band), heart and soul. You feeling like a tough guy, bubba? You want some raw, loud, raunchy, no gimmicks, no B.S. rock and roll that still has the power to irritate the hell out of people at high volumes? If so, you're on the right Amazon page. These other reviewers(with the exception of one or two) know what they're talking about. I like to think that I do too.

This is superb,! the best 60s instrumentals. I am going to swap my Fender for a Danelectro ! The Batman theme is dynamite

Almost a let-down........2007-05-17
I purchased From Mars to Sirius when it first came out and was blown away. It still hasn't left my disc changer. I purchased The Link hoping for more of the same, but I didn't quite get it. They're still Gojira, but this release sounds a little more... crisp. If fMtS is a boulder rolling down a hillside at your face, The Link is a small, jagged rock screaming from David's sling... at your face. Each sound is definite. On fMtS, the vocals were layered (I'm assuming) to make them thick and rumbling. On The Link, they're a single track (again, assuming) to make them sharp and peircing. The instruments come across the same way. Great album, but it's not fMtS... which is good.

To Golden Age aficionados, this Memphis combo, comprised of brothers Johnny and Dorsey Burnette and visionary lead guitarist Paul Burlison, are the great lost rockabilly group of all time. Contemporaries of Elvis, the Burnettes scored a record contract after going to New York and winning top prize on the Ted Mack's Amateur Hour TV show (the Star Search of its day). This collection of their 1956 recordings contains the rawest, purest rockabilly ever made. In addition to such out-of-control classics as the title track and "Tear It Up," there are such influential recordings as "Train Kept A-Rollin'" (later covered by the Yardbirds and Areosmith), and "Lonesome Tears in My Eyes" (an early Beatles favorite). --Billy Altman

Hard Core Rock and Roll.......2007-03-09
These guys may not have been the most famous in the 50's (or now, for that matter) but they are definitely some hard core rockers. If this CD doesn't get you boppin', then you must be dead. I wasn't very familiar with the Johnny Burnette Trio when I got this CD, but it quickly turned into one of my favorite albums. You can tell he puts everything he has into his vocals, and the guitar is very fun!
Rockabilly Burnette Trio.......2007-02-07
If you like Rock-A-Billy you'll love this album. The Johnny Burnette Trio Rockabilly Boogie album will leave you searching for more of Johnny's work. We get lots of request for his music during the rock-a-billy review show at the station. Still a favorite to many.

D'oh! Hello, more than Elvis here.......2006-09-29
Nick Tosches gave me the vinyl version of this collection for a birthday present in the late '70's. If you've read Nick's books about the unsung heroes of Rock & Roll & Country, you know he knows from whence he speaks. If you haven't you're not as serious about the genre as you pretend. The Burnette Trio have laid a solid bedrock for rockabilly. Their sides are seminal, and the influences are deep. "Train Kept A Rollin'" alone would be enough. Enjoy the collection for what it is - solid rockabilly and ground breaking rock & roll. No one is taking anything away from Elvis, but he wasn't alone. Others were traveling his path. The Burnettes were on the same road. Open your mind and see.
great Rockabilly.......2006-09-24
I am reading some of the other reviews written here, and I can't understand why anybody would rate this stuff less than 4 stars. If you like Rockabilly music, the real stuff, then how can you not like this? I don't care if some people think this is not as good as say, Elvis, or Gene Vincent, but so what? Why does it have to be that? It's got the beat, nice guritar riffs, the rock-a-billy vocals, and it's great stuff.
influential rockabilly.......2006-04-20
"Rockabilly Boogie, Please Don't Leave Me, Lonesome Train, Your Baby Blue Eyes, Train Kept A-Rollin, Lonesome Tears in my Eyes and Honey Hush" are greats of the genre. The originals are really cool, but to think they took Fats Domino songs, already classics in their own right, and made them into a real rockers, great! Some of the other songs might not be everyone's thing, with a more bubble gum sounding back up chorus appearing from time to time, but it doesn't really take away from the album as a whole. The tracks on this album influenced so much music that came later, it really is a classic.

A Towering Momento.......2006-07-27
How I've sweated on the re-release of the epigymous, Link Wray album, one of the early 70s masterpieces of Americana, rich and raw in a way 'The Band's' lauded albums could only simulate. Like liner notesman, John Collins, I picked up Wray's early music in remainder bins. John Fogerty, even Lonnie Mack, were better received, striking similar grooves. But Link was right out there, quiveringly, his own man.'Fire & Brimstone', an enduring favourite, has the power of an incantation; stupendous vocals from a one-lunged man!. Collins notes 'in the late 60s there was a studied attempt by such musicians as The Band,Neil Young, Guy Clark and David Ackles, all in their own way, to evoke a rock'n'roll vision of Americana, of white clapboard chapels, dungareed farmers, dusty drifters and outlaws.' But Wray and his two brothers weren't aping any mystical, mythical rural past...from the outside looking in. They weren't even speaking for the white-man poor. They were by his own admission,'Shawnee poor'. His vernacular is, up and down, the rockin' truth, no prisoners taken. The menacing throb he pulls from Willie Dixon's,'Tail Dragger' exemplifies his own take on the Blues. This dizziness subsides with the lovely mandolin interlude of,'Beans and Fatbatback' before the full-on rocker,'I'm So Glad' is unleashed. Neighbours beware. You wouldn't want to be duelling with these dudes.'Shawnee tribe' is simply magnificent, ripping into the heart of a remembered past, a wordless humming, intermittently augmented with some barking acoustics. This is everything that Robbie Robertson's explorations of his indigenous roots lacks. I wonder what they played at Link's funeral? May he rest in peace.
..... so dear to me ...........2006-04-26
This music is so dear to me. Glad it's on cd at last!
Forget what you think you know about Link Wray.......2006-02-22
Maybe if the Rolling Stones had been Americans or Captain Beefheart had been a country boy they could have cut a piece of raw Americana like this. It is unlike anything you have ever heard before but yet it is strangly familiar. You already know Link Wray's reputation on the guitar but this album takes it a step further. His guitar sound is more raw and gnarly than ever before. His voice is rough and pure. Discover yourself, rock-n-roll, and save your soul all at the same time.
REAL Roots Music.......2005-09-20
There is really nothing else like these recordings. A can of nails and whatever else is laying around gets used to flesh out these heartfelt, soulful tunes. Non-repeatable--unbeatable acoustic homemade music---don't miss it.

The Ultimate Get Your Freak On CD.......2006-12-29
I heard this CD back in 1999, and when I heard it I fell in LOVE.
Link is another talented brother that knows how to set the mood. I searched and searched for this cd in local stores here in TX, and couldn't find it. But when a friend hipped me to this site, and I searched for it and found it on here, I bought it with the quickness.
This is another cd that is in HEAVY rotation in my cd player.
I call this cd "The Baby Maker" because once you put it in your cd player and light some candles and have that special someone next to you...you better belive it's gonna be on and poppin.
~kisha~
Should have been the king of baby maker slow jams.......2006-12-07
Link burst onto the scene after writing LSG'S My Body and his debut CD holds no punches. The theme of this CD is SEX and he cleverly sells his tales of flesh by cloaking them with radio-ready hooks. Sex Down is pure ear candy -- beneath those slick surfaces, there's not much there (apart from some dirty talk). Link reaches the songwriting heights of his first single "Whatcha Gone Do" or "My Body," with I Really Wanna Sex Your Body,Gimme Some, Sex Down and 911 0024.
In the mood.......2006-08-04
This is a great cd. I puts you in the mood for making love or just f-ing.
This album is the bomb.......2006-05-24
I must agree with the comment below. 8 years on and this album still pumps. I brought this album in 1999 and pull it out on regular occasions. Most tracks on here are awesome. Shame we never heard from him again. He made good contributions to LSG's first album as well with some smooth as tracks. We need more sweet RnB albums like this.
GIVE ME SOME.......2006-05-14
I gave this cd 4 stars not because its something so great but because the slow jams are crazy. The beats are nice. I think if you are trying to get your groove on, some songs off of this cd will get you going. I dont recall ever hearing a song that so nicely wanted you to "give me some" or how he is going to sex you down. I think from anyone else it would have been tasteless but I can still play this cd some 8 yrs later and still love the slow hits.
If you are looking to buy it...I don't know, you may not be too happy with the overall cd.
Link does have a great voice. I would buy it for the slow jams but thats just me and since I love slow jams thats all I need from him.

Until this disc, Adam Guettel was best known as the mastermind behind Floyd Collins, the gut-wrenching, boundary-breaking piece of musical theater that never gained the popularity it deserved. Myths & Hymns is another beast altogether, though just as interesting. Guettel has created a song cycle based loosely on Greek mythology and lyrics he discovered in an antique hymnal. These 15 songs are a combination of art song and show tune, but all are interesting. "Icarus" is funky jazz in which the composer duets with Lawrence Clayton. "There's a Land" is transformed from a traditional hymnal into an upbeat romp à la "This Land Is Your Land." "At the Sounding" is an upbeat yet appropriate transition from the somber "Children of the Heavenly King." Joining Guettel on the vocal parts for these works are Audra McDonald, Mandy Patinkin, Theresa McCarthy, and a handful of other fine interpreters. Sublime and moving, Myths & Hymns is all about reflecting--to God, a lover, or oneself. And while Guettel's roots run deep into the Broadway tradition (he's the grandson of Richard Rodgers), he's thankfully not afraid of musical experimentation. A great, soulful disc. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
A magical and affecting song cycle.......2006-09-28
I bought this disk on an Adam Guettel shopping spree after seeing and loving his Tony Award winning The Light in the Piazza. I was expecting the same sophistacated, elegant, and lushly romantic score a la Piazza, but was suprised to encounter an earthy mix of contemporary, hip rhythms and folkish, almost ecclesiastical melodies. However, upon my first listening, I didn't like it, didn't get it, and put it back on the self.
Fast forward a year.
I now think Myths and Hymns is the most original, most innovative song cycles of our generation. M and H encumpasses greek mythology and spiritual Americana by combining the stories of Icarus, Pegasus, Hero, Lysander, Sisyphus, and others with the structured yet sprited New England hymnal style music. The result is magical collection of songs that link together both musically and emotionally to create a satisfying listening experience.
The Performers are all in top form, including greats like Mandy Patankin embodying the eturnal suffering of Sisyphus, Theresa McCarthy and her angelic soprano voice, a spirited Billy Porter, and a radient Audra McDonald showing a playful side of Pegasus. However, the best performer by far is Guettel himself. He sings many of his own songs, and gives a soulful, heartfelt, and skilled performance, proving himself with the many talented voices on this cd.
The best songs are:
-At the Sounding: A spirited opening number combining antique lyrics with modern harmonies. It starts the cd of with a bang.
-Saturn Returns: Sung by Guettel, this song masterfully addresses the universal question about meaning in life.
-Icarus: Upbeat, and again sung but Guettel, it tells the story of the ill fated Icarus and adds present day connections to the ancient myth.
-Hero and Leander: The most romantic song on the cd, and my favorite. It is sung by Guettel, and is an understated and poigent declaration of love.
-Sisyphus: Mandy Patankin as you've never heard him before. A very funny song.
-Come To Jesus: A haunting melody that will stay with you long after listening.
-Pegasus: Another upbeat, funny little song, with silly lyrics and obscure references.

Beautiful Song Cycle, Almost As Good As Guettel's The Light In The Piazza.......2006-06-25
When listening to The Light In The Piazza, I soon fell in love with the soundtrack and wanted to hear more from Adam Guettel, so I picked up Myths & Hymns. While it is quite obviously different from The Light In The Piazza, it is just as musically brilliant.
What really gives this album that extra glue to hold it together is the star-studded cast singing the songs. There are Broadway favorites like Mandy Patinkin (singing "Sisyphus") & Audra McDonald (singing in "Pegasus"), but one great thing about this is that Mr. Adam Guettel sings a few songs himself (and not half-bad might I add) which include "Hero And Leander" & "Saturn Returns."
From the beautiful title song "Saturn Returns" to the quirky but funny "Pegasus" to the unique song stylings of "Sisyphus," this is certainly a must-have for any music lover. A few cautionary things about this though. This is a song cycle, a group of songs designed to be performed in sequence as a single entity, not really a musical. Also, there really isn't a beat. For instance, you're not going to wake up the following day singing "Come To Jesus" because it is beautifully addictive music that doesn't have a real consecutive rhythm. It is a still a brilliant music and is a must-listen for anyone.
Best Song Cycle Ever Written!.......2006-02-28
I believe that this is the best song cycle ever written and remains as one of my favourite Guettel pieces. The songs on this CD are extraordinary, extremely well written and cleverly assembled. I have also bought the sheet music which confirms his musical genius even further and also contains many songs not on the CD such as Prometheus, Jesus the Might Conquerer, Life is But a Dream and Build a Bridge, all of which are fabulous. This is a must for all music lovers! You won't regret it!
A fine new voice in musical theater.......2003-07-19
"Myths and Hymns" brings a fine new talent to musical theater. Adam Guettel has taken Greek myths and combined them with songs found in an old hymnal to create a unique cycle of songs ranging from funny ("Pegasus" and "There's A Land") to poignant ("Migratory V" and "Hero and Leander") to uplifting ("There's A Shout"). And, for this recording, we get to hear some of the original cast members from "Saturn Returns," the off-broadway show which featured the 16 tracks on this album. Theresa McCarthy, Audra McDonald, Billy Porter and Mandy Patinkin, to name a few.
Some of my favorites are "Hero and Leandro" sung by Adam Guettel, "How Can I Lose You?" sung by Annie Golden and "Awaiting You" sung by Billy Porter. But, the entire album is filled with fantastic music and wonderful voices.
"There's A Shout" for this album.......2002-12-31
I've been on a crusade ever since I was in college, it was to find unique and passionate musical. When I first started my search it mostly consisted of Stephen Sondheim's musicals, but now its getting bombarded with the likes of Ricky Ian Gordon, Jason Robert Brown, Micahal John Lachiusa and of course Adam Guettel. I first fell in love with in love with Adam Guettel's works when I bought FLOYD COLLINS, it mentioned on the back that he was the new Sondheim, so of course I bought it. Well after I listened to that album I was in a desperate search for what ever else he wrote. Then I found MYTHS & HYMNS. Which is not quite a musical, but it is. There such amazing voice on this album such as Audra McDonald, Mandy Patinkin, Theresa McCarthy, Vivian Cherry, Annie Golden, and of course Adam Guettel himself. The music is so powerful at times it can reduce you to tears and so fun at times you can't help from dancing and singing around your room. So if you haven't guessed it yet I highly recommend this album!

Album Description
The kids of 1958 loved 'em, and their first single for Cadence Records shot up the charts like a label owner's dream. This is the fantastic and fiery album that was supposed to have been released as a follow-up to one of the all-time great, instrumental classics, "Rumble." But faster than you can say "Drag Race," everyone was talking about the new threat to the morals of American youth -- Cadence label-owner Archie Bleyer included. That's why Link and his boys were off the imprint, and this album of his prime-era, distorto-guitar-crunch cool remained unreleased for nearly 50 years! At long last, here it is, and it's every bit as dirty and dangerous as you would expect!

About time.......2007-02-21
This rocks forwards and backwards. That it took this long to be released is borderline criminal. It's refreshing to hear the power chord from a new-old view.

Customer Reviews:
Historically important choral music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-05-25
For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD presents 20th Century choral arrangements of music from the African American spiritual tradition rooted in spirituals and gospels, including Harry T. Burleigh's "My Lord, What a Mornin'" (1929), "Walk Together Children" (William Henry Smith, 1937) and more contemporary composers like Sanford Moore's "Go Tell It On The Mountain" (1993.)
There are excellent notes about the genre, however, in light of the historical significance of this music I'm surprised and disappointed to find no biographical information about the composers, not even birth and/or death dates, with this CD. I feel this is a crucial component in an "outreach" project like this, especially since most of these composers are not well known. Still I highly recommend it for the music alone.
The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
