Product Description
In it's original form this 'Fluid' gem appeared in many a top bods chart for '99, now back with a Hooj remix package. The original is a co-production between Andy and the Evolution Boys, with it's infectious riffs and dirty stabs, a rolling progressive monster, whilst on the flip 'Tarrantella vs. Redanka' keep it chunky, funky and groovy. Slacker provides a thumpy techy workout and Silvio Ecomo's banging rework with it's huge drop and tribally percussion provides a taster of what's to come with his own track on Hooj later this year. The English-language Oral Fixation Vol. 2 finds Shakira reclaiming some of the bite she showcased on 1998's smashing Donde Estan Los Ladrones? The Colombian rock goddess is making up for lost time: this is her second disc of new material in 2005. It's quite a feat, considering the four-year gap since Laundry Service, her scattershot, English-language debut album. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is more mature and better focused than the spin-cycle pop of that 2001 disc. Kick-off track "How Do You Do" starts with a haunting reading of "The Lord's Prayer" before launching into a risky questioning of faith and religion. Shakira touches on the highs and lows of celebrity on a trio of tracks--the bittersweet "Your Embrace," the guitar-driven "Costume Makes the Clown," and the disco-fied, politically charged "Timor." Selfish men and failed relationships--two oft-mentioned topics of interest--anchor much of Oral Fixation Vol. 2. First single "Don't Bother" is a bitter ode to strength, jealousy, and survival; "Dreams for Plans" is a wistful collage of relationship memories; and Carlos Santana slides a sexy guitar riff under soulful standout track "Illegal." The purple haze of Prince hangs over "Animal City," one of the disc's most inventive moments. It's a free-wheeling melange of rock riffs, electronic accents, mariachi horns and confident vocals. Two songs from Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 make appearances--the somber "Something" and "The Day and the Time," which improves greatly upon its Spanish counterpart. Vol. 1, while at times enjoyable, was a portrait of a gifted artist struggling to keep her footing and retain her confidence. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 finds Shakira embracing the eclectic beauty within. It's a wonderful sound. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Listen to Shakira!.......2007-07-16

I have always liked Shakira. When I heard "Whenever, wherever"...I though: that's a great artist. She is not only good singer but also very beautfiul. The album cover is very beautiful this time and it has a message: a woman with an apple...but what is that child?

Well, I think this is the best Shakira album ever!!! It has very beautiful songs. The single "Don't Bother" isn't the best song in this album, not even nearly. This is one of those album I like to hear from the beginning to the end, not just three or two songs. The first track "How Do You Do" is a great track! It starts with a great "intro". It is the best Shakira song I've ever heard. "Don't Bother" is a good song but not so special. "Illegal", "The day And the Time" are great Shakira songs. "Animal City" is a little bit more rock. The album has great melodies and rhythms and great lyrics. This was and it is still a great listening experience. I hope many people find this album. "Timor" is a great closing track - but this album has also 10 other great songs.

3 out of 5 stars Volume 1 gets the prize........2007-07-06

I like Shakira's music most of the time. Even tough I have her whole cd collection (the ones that you can find in stores because her first and second are impossible find). Not all were for me good. "PIES DESCALZOS" next with "FIJACION ORAL Vol.1" are the best.
In 2005 after being tired of hearing her ALL THE TIME on radio or TV I bought "Fijacion ORAL Vol.1" and I must say that I was impressed, the cd was really, really good, so of course when the second volume was released I bought it without hesitation but this time I wasn't very thrilled and I think that also the public had the same feeling for the cd as I did. The cd debuted on Billboard's Top 200 albums at #5 where it peakd and flopped very fast in almost every music chart. The first single "DON'T BOTHER" was good but nothing special and didn't make either an impression (Top 50 on Billboard's Hot 100). From my point of view the best songs on the original version were "HOW DO YOU DO" a very strong song that sounds very good along with "ANIMAL CITY", the English version next to Cerati of "DIA ESPECIAL/DAY AND THE TIME" from the Spanish cd and finally the biggest track for me, "ILLEGAL" featuring Santana on lead guitar. In overall the cd sounds weak and maybe Shakira or her record company noticed that and along with the poor selling they decided to re-release the album with a new song that made the album see brightness for a brief moment with the mega hit "HIPS DON'T LIE" one of the biggest singles of 2006 but that wasn't enough to keep the album from falling again to the darkness. The third single "ILLEGAL" went nowhere and that's a pity beacuse of the great track it is but I think that the reason why it didn't hit was because even tough Shakira has a great voice, that doesn't mean that you don't get tired of listening it and "HIPS DON'T LIE" was good for her but it also made people tired of her voice. Maybe this happends to me beacuse I live in a country that speaks Spanish and I've been listening to her music non-stop ever sience "LA TORTURA" which is a very good song and I believe that it's going to be a classic.
Anyway, I think that the album is not that good really, just a couple of songs are good. If you speak Spanish I would recommend "FIJACION ORAL Vol.1" or "PIES DESCALZOS".

5 out of 5 stars The best album of the year .......2007-06-21

Shakira transcends her beauty to make fantastic music. I like classic rock and I love this album. Every song is terrific. Buy it today

4 out of 5 stars MUY BUENO, PERO..........2007-05-07

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected.......2007-04-11

Would not recommend this CD. Some of the music is really horrible.

If your reading this then you are obviously contemplating whether or not to buy this Item.. DO IT. It has both of her great CD's and I'm sure everyone else that wrote a review talks about the music..

SO I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE DVD. The DVD is a must have for Shaki fans, It has so many great videos and for real fans... they gotta get it. It sucks watching your old VHS recordings off of fuse doesn't it? NOW you can have it DVD quality.. IT's the greatest. VERY GOOD DVD... The La tortura video is great kicks off the DVD.. FROM THERE ON IT's just amazing until the end! Her live performances are the best she has ever done.

I'm done with my bad review lol.

SHAKIRA IS GREAT. WE HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO HER AND ENJOYING HER SONGS SINCE SHE WAS 15. WE LIKE BOTH THE SPANISH AND ENGLISH CDs. AND IT WAS A GREAT PRICE. THE VIDEOS WERE A NICE BONUS.

5 out of 5 stars Shakira has become a master at her craft........2007-02-21

This beautiful lady has done it again. With her talent and her voice, she has my vote. With the exception of only two songs, I love every song she wrote, and this is unusual for me to like that many on two albums. Of course the DVD brings out her mastery in the art of the visual. To see her is to love her!

3 out of 5 stars I didn't develop a 'Fixation' for this album.............2007-06-30

I had to listen to ORAL FIXATION VOLUME 2 [after hearing Fijacion Oral Vol. 1] to understand what all the hype was about, for this latest piece by Shakira, and to find out whether it was merited. What is my verdict? In all honesty, a lot of the material here left me cold. Though, I won't deny that Baranquilla-born Colombian superstar extraordinaire Shakira Mebarek is a truly multi-talented vocalist, musician, songwriter, philanthropist and alluring bellydancer, this album felt more like filler than substance. I was looking forward to seeing how she would fare on her second English language album (the first being LAUNDRY SERVICE in 2001).

This 2005 release catches our attention with quite an eyeful of Shakira on the cover. In fact, the cover art [Shakira in a quasi-Eve pose with forbidden fruit in hand, her chest area barely covered by the branch of the Tree of Knowledge] was generously altered in more fundamentalist nations, prior to the album's release, to conceal her bare midriff. The music also takes an intimate look at Shakira's life, through a study of the anatomy of broken relationships, evident in her lyrics. Many of the songs are bitter in nature. The first song, "How Do You Do," examines Shakira's broken relationship with God, specifically. The lyrics raised eyebrows and generated discussion regarding her [sometimes sacrireligious] view of organized faith practices. The music and accompanying lyrics are grizzly and pointed. Shaki even opens the song with excerpts from "The Lord's Prayer," in English and Latin, and goes on to sing in Hebrew and Arabic. Many of the other songs lean more toward her setbacks in romantic love, and the musical styles run the range from pop/rock to disco. ("Don't Bother" and "The Day and the Time," as examples) Another controversial song here is "Timor," which closes the set of eleven tunes. Shakira shamelessly calls the media to task, as well as society's apathetic "out of sight, out of mind" attitude toward the victims of third world country violence and social injustice. Actually, that is the one track I really connected with. I love the instrumental on this one, as well as the choral accompaniment. It's just a shame that this last song didn't set the standard for most of the other tracks on the album. Then, I would've given this at least four stars. Give it a listen and draw your own opinions. Far be it for me to call a "yay" or "nay" on this one, so, I will just say that Shakira's latest effort was "middle of the road."

1 out of 5 stars Shakira Is Terrible.......2007-04-18

I think Shakira sucks a lot. She can't sing. I don't understand her musical appeal.

4 out of 5 stars Nice songs, and thankgoodness for the written lyrics!!.......2007-02-02

I'm only giving her 4 stars because her accent was just too much!! And I hear the same comments from non-spanish speakers who couldn't understand her "Don't bother" song. So, I had to read the lyrics, because otherwise, I wouldn't know what on earth she was singing about.

Once I passed this phase, I really enjoyed her songs. It's true, there weren't many songs that I thought were great, but not one of them was bad. I love this girl, and, personally, they were all decent.

Songs you must have:

Dreams for plans, Illegal, the Day and the Time, Your Embrace, and Something, oh.. and maybe How do you Do.

The others were too pop for my taste and I don't recommend them.

However, if your are a true fan, you must buy this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Gift.......2007-01-09

3 out of 5 stars two differnt oral fixation vol 2.......2006-12-28

I really like this CD not as good as laundry service, but i still enjoyed most of the tracks. what my complaint is that hips don't lie is not on the first release. I feel cheated, I am not going out to buy a second CD just for a new song. I feel that the record company shouldn't add a song the re-release the cd. I notice some other bands are doing this as well, maybe thats why cd sells are dropping.

4 out of 5 stars Tout va Bien.......2005-08-07

This is a great, fun, cheeky, silly band--from Brooklyn, not LA. They met at the Rhode Island School of Design. I've heard many comparisons to the B-52's and that fits, except that when the one French member of the band, Celine Dijon, sings she takes us beyond a 60's French pop reenactment band into, can I say it, greatness. Just listen to the beautiful "Tout Va Bien." Sublime sunny pop. When Clermont Ferrand sings, well let's face it he can't really sing, but it's still campy fun.

4 out of 5 stars Ye-ye finesse.......2004-12-18

Les Sans Cullotes-or "those without underpants"-could easily be confused for a Parisian band from the 1960s. Their use of harmonized vocals, three-chord guitar riffs, quirky synthesizers, and thumping backbeats on Fixation Orale demonstrates serious comprehension of French ye-ye pop. The fact that the band hails from Brooklyn, NY and that only one of its seven members has French lineage can be surprising to a first-time listener.
Fixation Orale is a fascinatingly likable pop album. The music transports the listener to the quiet St. Denis streets or to the boisterous and smoky Cannes clubs of the care-free and somewhat innocent mid-1960s. The tracks have the bite of a Southern California garage band ("Allô, Allô"), the debonair subtleness of Edith Piaf ("Tout va Bien"), and the humor of that old roommate of yours who went to art school ("Téléphone Douche").
That humor is permeated throughout the record and it's one of the staples of the Cullotes' live shows. Fixation Orale has 10 tracks sung in French, one in English, and one in Esperanto. Most of the pieces make no sense in any language, for example "La souris noire mangé le fromage blanc, le gros chat mangé la petite souris, le méchant garçon chasse le vilain chat, la belle maman fessé le garçon stupide" (or "the black mouse eats the white cheese, the fat cat eats the little mouse, the mean boy chases the evil cat, the good mother spanks the stupid boy"), from the first single "Allô, Allô," which mostly talks about a couple's admiration for each other. The album is peppered with such little nuggets of bad syntax.
In French lore, a "sans cullote" is a Revolution-era soldier whose poor dress is no suggestion of his bravery. Indeed, these go-go boots-clad art school dropouts put on a bold show in Fixation Orale.

5 out of 5 stars Clever, kooky, high-energy pseudo-French indierock.......2004-07-12

If the Bay City Rollers had been French instead of Scottish, and fell into the thrall of some dadaist garage rock scene run by Esperanto cultists... Well, they might have sounded a bit like this gleefully tounge-in-cheek "French" rock band from Los Angeles, who giddily skip from rock genre to rock genre as easily and breezily as they slide between languages. Cracking jokes in pidgin French, broken English, and whatever random syllables seem to be laying around at hand, these folks make no sense, but they sure have fun. The crunchier guitar riffs may be a little hard-rocking for your average frog-pop fans, but folks who liked April March's collaborations with The Makers may find kindred spirits here. I haven't seen them live, but I imagine they are a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars cheeky fun!.......2004-06-10

This is my perfect summer album. Lovable "french" pop that is incredibly energetic.
I find myself dancing uncontrollably without even realizing it. All cynicism melts away and now you're ready to go out with a smile.

4 out of 5 stars Decent, solid effort.......2006-09-05

This is a decent, solid effort from long-lasting Christian rock band Petra. The sound is more current and 'with the times', and although the pacing and songs are a little more mellow for the most part, the update in sound is a welcome change from the overly 80's song that the band kept up for most of the 90s (with the exception of Wake-up Call, most of Petra Praise 2, and this album).

Don't get me wrong, Petra was great in the 80s and released a lot of good albums, but it was about time they changed and sounded more current. They just could have rocked a bit harder, that's all.

Still a solid effort though.

5 out of 5 stars if i had a review for someone!.......2006-01-21

this is goooooooooood ,no grrrrrrrrreeeeeeaaaaaaattttt! herd it, loved it ,buy it! ya dig!a more mainstream sound but its all good!check this one out!

5 out of 5 stars Right, let me think... um, well... BLOWAWAY! !.......2003-01-22

Petra never cease to amaze me by how they change the sound on every record they produce. And these songs are as good as Bob's first highest on Wake Up Call. The choruses on this album though are some of the most in your face that he has ever done and I love these kind of songs. John Schlitt is still in very good form, although probably not as high as i thought he would be but still awesome! The songs on this album are all so differnt in sound. That is why I love the album so much. None of the songs sound like each other which is brilliant! THIS ALBUM HAS INSIGHT, PASSION, BEATY AND SINGABLE SONGS THAT WILL MAKE YOU THINK FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE. My fav song is "Shadow Of A Doubt", my second favourite petra song ever.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the post Hartman/Lawry & Gates albums.......2002-04-18

This is by far their best album since the core players that gave us "Fired Up" through "Wake Up Call" left. Hartman seems more focused as a song writer and gives us some inspired messages to take to heart.

Though we would see more personnel changes after this album, Hartman writing, Weaver setting the time and Schlitt belting out the songs like only he can, have helped to keep the Petra boat on course through all the changes in direction.

3 out of 5 stars One of their weaker efforts.......2001-07-13

I have been listening to Petra since the Yahweh Love days, and first saw them tour on the Not of This World album. Over the years the band evolved, as my musical taste did, towards harder and harder rock. I still really enjoy both the old Petra and the "new" Petra, and feel, as most do, that Beyond Belief is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. BUT...what happened on this one? I know that there was a major line-up change, but not since Volz left the group has the music changed this much. What happened to the rock, guys? A few of the tracks still sound like the Petra I expect, but the rest is mishmash of pop and alternative rock that sounds like a completely different band. Even Schlitt's vocals are not nearly as powerful, as he does not have much to work with. I love Petra, but I will have to preview the next album before considering buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Can we get a reunion???.......2006-06-30

I saw these guys in a friends basement in San Diego around 1995, just before this album was released. They played Police Story by Black Flag most of this LP and the preceeding singles. This still stands as the best punk/hardcore show I've ever seen in my life. I'd give this album 10 stars if I could! Also check out Tim and Keith's band Kiss it Goodbye.

5 out of 5 stars Better than your band.......2006-06-04

I've been looking for a band as good as Deadguy since Deadguy broke up. I'm still looking. These guys were the real thing. There have been dozens of pale imitations but no one has come any where close to being as good as Deadguy. There was no B.S. with these guys. There were no trendy haircuts, no self important speech's on stage, no choreographed metal dance moves, and no "spooky" make up. They just played. The music was brutal and honest and the lyrics were brilliant and personal.

The singer (Tim Singer, No Escape) and guitarist (Kieth Huckins, Rorschach) went on to form Kiss it Goodbye. Kiss It Goodbye was incredible, but not quite as good as Deadguy. If you like Deadguy buy both of Kiss It Goodbye's albums.

I've been going to shows for about 15 years and if I could get one band back together it would be Deadguy. The best hardcore band I ever saw. Death to false metal.

I got this CD when I was in middle school (I'm 3 years out of high school now) and it is still one of my favorite albums. They seem to be one of the forgotten bands of the genre, hidden behind the likes of bands like DEP and Botch. I've never really known anyone else into this band who was into them before I let them borrow the CD. It just seems wierd to me, because the music is so interesting. The music is mathy, noisy and rocks out plenty of Slayer and Sabbath-esque riffs too, plus the lyrics are incredible and the vocal style is great, because it really brings out the psychotic themes of the songs. Plus, the screaming isn't just typical hardcore "I'm screaming because you scream in hardcore music," vocals. It is sincere sounding and SUPRISE! You can actually understand the words without a lyric sheet. I'm still horrible sad that my Death To False Metal hoodie got stolen when I was working overnights at Tops. Damn! Go buy this record now!

5 out of 5 stars The Roots Of Mathematical Metalcore.......2005-03-27

You may know that Coalesce, Botch and the Dillinger Escape Plan helped to create math metal, but you have obviously forgotten about Deadguy. When I listened to their songs, the words "Every Time I Die" popped into my mind. This stuff created today's metalcore, and barely anyone knows about Deadguy. Check them out. They're on Victory records, the best independent label ever.

3 words, BUY THIS ALBUM. One of the most intense bands I have ever heard. Brutal, chaotic noise core that holds nothing back. Personal Faves: The Extremist, Riot Stairs, Pins & Needles.

    Album Description

Although each track on "The Perfume of Creosote" stands on its own, this body of work is intricately crafted to take the listener on a daylong sojourn through the desert from emboldened sunrise (Surya, The Divine Sun) to the dreamlike, UFO-infused night sky (As Heaven Falls from the Sky). With repeated listenings, the journey becomes more joyful and compelling. These unique electronic soundscapes contain elements of ambience, world music, alternative rock, lounge music, music for film, and hints of psychedelia and jazz. From the lush and romantic Inside Saguaros to the bewitchingly ambient Mirage, from the wild, uptempo, When The Devil Was A Little Boy to the beautiful and haunting Tarantulas you'll hear underlying shades of exotica inspired by such artists as Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, and Les Baxter. Instead of the tropical flavor favored by those artists, each piece is inspired by the desert—the lush Sonoran desert in particular—capturing the exotic essence of the creatures, fauna and climate.

5 out of 5 stars oh yeah, this is a great cd!!.......2004-05-31

I LOVE THIS MUSIC. JAMES AND MICHAEL HAVE MADE A GREAT CD, SO FULL OF LUSH SOUNDS (AND VISIONS).THEY PUT SO MUCH VISUALLY INTO THE MUSIC-TARANTULAS, RATTLESNAKES, DUST DEVILS, THUNDERBIRDS, ROADRUNNERS, SCORPIONS, SUNSETS, EVEN A PINK FAIRY DUSTER(WHATEVER THAT IS!). PUT ON THE HEADPHONES, CRANK IT UP! MY FAVS ARE- SURYA,THE DIVINE SUN- ADVENTURES OF THE PACK RAT- WHEN THE DEVIL WAS A LITTLE BOY- ROCK GARDENS- ROADRUNNER- AND THUNDERBIRDS!!! THE PERFUME OF CREOSOTE: DESERT EXOTICA PART 1! I'M HOPING FOR MORE MUSIC FROM SMOKE & MIRRORS!!! PEACE & ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars An album that is greater than the whole of its 23 tracks.......2004-05-13

Every day, I have a different tune stuck in my head. Few things in life give me greater joy than discovering a musical gem that I find myself wanting to listen to over and over again. The Perfume of Creosote is such a gem. Each track has a definite hook. The variety keeps the album interesting, and the images it invokes are as vivid as the accompanying soundtrack. Yet, the soundscapes do not hit you over the head as much as the track titles might suggest. For example, I never would have guessed the dreamy, hypnotic, earworm-inducing "Tarantulas" was inspired by large furry arachnids, yet now that I know, I can easily envision the gentle creatures methodically combing the desert at twilight. The various tracks are lush with plenty of exotic percussion (a personal favorite of mine) yet not so overpowering as to leave nothing to the imagination. There is nothing deceptive about Smoke & Mirrors. These guys have nothing up their sleaves. They know exactly what they are doing, and it is brilliant.

    5 out of 5 stars Gifted Musicians!.......2004-01-14

I expected I would enjoy the CD because I have met you and how often do we get to meet and know the composers and musicians of the CDs we listen to on a regular basis. I was, however, extremely pleased when I began listening to the CD to find that I truly enjoyed the music for itself, not only because of who composed and performed it. What a wonderful surprise to find so much talent and an unexpected gem quite literally in my own backyard.

You both are truly gifted musicians and I am grateful that you have chosen to share your gift with other music lovers. This is a CD that I am sure I will find myself playing over and over again as I have a feeling it has a complexity that will be revealed layer by layer each time I listen to the music. I also look forward to your second release which I understand is coming soon.

Thank you for what I know will be many hours of very enjoyable listening!

    5 out of 5 stars World-jazz-rock-ethno-ambient fusion!.......2003-11-18

East meets southwest in a vibrant world-jazz-rock-ethno-ambient fusion[whew]. This is definitely a unique recording blending many different genres together. In the first track "Surya,The Divine Sun" for example, didgeridoo, electric guitar, drumkit, percussion and vibes join forces in a loping, strutting, rhythm across the desert floor, with an eastern sounding melody.

There are 23 tracks on this disc that blend together expertly. Most tracks feature some type of drumkit, keyboard, percussion, and guitar, with desert textures. Some other highlights: "Mirage"-dreamy, echoing guitar with percussion and cymbals. "Rattlesnake"- a perky electro strut with spaghetti western guitar. "Adventures Of A Packrat"-nice piano melody with percussion, synth, electric bass and drumkit. "Monsoon"-juicy bass and guitar work in a nice groove over a swaggering rhythm. "Roadrunner"-a rapid fire synth, nice guitar and a sturdy rhythm propel the listener down the highway. You can see the heat rising off the sand and feel the desert wind. This list could go on and on. Pretty much every song on this disc is a highlight. There are enough killer grooves and ideas packed in here for three or four albums, and the quality of musicianship is excellent!

Not exactly ambient, but good music is good music! Fans of fusion music will love this. If you are looking for a different sort of musical adventure this is a sonic vacation you may not want to come back from. Pack your bags and go away for the weekend.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've bought in months!.......2003-09-20

Acrid, airy, warm and rhythmicly inspiring, this CD brings to mind the psychedelic dreams of a desert landscape. A sprawling cascade sideswiping Eno, Fripp, Numan and post-punk, it's a soundscape to spur your creativity. Great background music if you're a painter, sculptor or writer. Some DJ friends of mine are mixing with it.

The composers are well-known former LA punkers who directly influenced everyone from Jane's Addiction to The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I thoroughly enjoyed this CD and recommend it highly. More!

    Product Description:
This is a Japan only-pressing edition. So I'm sure in america you won't get much chance to get this release. It costs around 28 dollars in Japan (exactly 3150 yen w/tax). It's a really great package, contains 1 CD & 1 DVD.
    CD:
All 13 track from the reissued edition of Oral Fixation V2.
Plus a Don't Bother Remix (jrsnchz remix) which is pretty good. Total 14 tracks.
    DVD:
Contains 2 videos: Don't Bother & Hips Don't Lie. Of course the package is really exclusive, remembering Hips video isn't released officially.
If you want to search it, the cover is exactly the same with Hips Don't Lie CD-Single (only the outcover, the booklet still same with audio CD edition). Don't be confused. If you a realrealreal big fan of Shakira, YES, I recomend this extremely-exclusive package for you.
