4-1/2 stars -- Black-and-blue-eyed soul.......2007-07-18
It might be a little late to be just reviewing Leela James' album, but as they say, better late then never. I was first introduced to Ms. James as a VH1 You Oughta Know (or was it still Inside Track back then?) artist, and after listening to A Change Is Gonna Come, I'm sure glad I was.
Even though the subject matter of "Music" is starting to get played out, I don't understand why most of the reviewers don't seem to like that song. But it IS true that the rest of the songs are a lot better than that. "Good Time" and "Rain" are just plain funky, while "Soul Food" is very satisfying. And if you think you'll already know what "Mistreating Me" is about, just listen to the song and you'll find some very interesting lyrics. Kanye West also drops in to produce two back-to-back gems that compliment each other: "It's Alright" and "Didn't I".
I don't know if I'll do like another reviewer and put Leela in the same league as Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin (although she does a damn good job with her rendition of Sam Cooke's title track); speaking of remakes, her cover of No Doubt's "Don't Speak" is also quality. But that leads me to another point. As reviewer E. Sims says, Leela's singing voice sounds a little too much like Joss Stone's, and the thing about that is, well, not to be cruel, but it's like this: when a white artist sings "black" music in a soulful voice, it's invigorating. When it's the other way around, it's a little odd. In other words, Leela sounds like a white person singing like a black person, which might not sit right with everyone.
But that doesn't really bother me, and it's also not the reason why I knocked half a star off my rating; the reason IS because the Wyclef-assisted "Ghetto" completely throws everything off. But A Change Is Gonna Come still proves that Leela James deserves much more attention than she's getting, so help her get some by picking this up.

Ms. Leela.......2007-07-09
This CD represents a return to soul music for me. Leela's raw talent and the talent of the band did it for me. I'm hooked!!
Would give 6 stars if I could...........2007-06-14
Fantastic music. Will cause you to not only tap your foot, snap your fingers, wiggle your behind, but also fling your entire body onto the dance floor with abandon. Every time I hear it again, I'm amazed and grateful such talent is recorded for us to share.
Soul found its resting place in Leela James THROAT!!!.......2007-06-13
Every few years or so..you got some talent that just has this WOW factor..and as I read the comments on Leela James and how her CD falls short is absolutely crazy. Its a beautiful story on how she yearns for good music to flow through into your ears and in your brain and appreciate soulful music. You are suppose to hear the anger, sadness, and joy of good music. That is travel she wants to take you on. She has a voice that is like no other. How dare anybody up here say she sounds like Joss Stone..it is the other way around..Get it correct. The CD is awesome. She has a voice built especially for live sessions..so if you have the opportunity to see her...do it. You will not be disappointed.
Speechless.........2007-01-28
This cd is highly recommended for deep down soulful music lovers! I love this cd! Leela James has a voice that makes chills go through your body. Her cd touches on love, broken hearts, soul food, relationships...I loved it!
HIGHLY recommended!
For music lovers that give this cd anything below a 5..you don't appreciate GOOD music!

Another interesting release from Collectables records.......2000-09-17
Collectables records has released quite a few almost-forgotten lp's from the Atlantic catalogue of deleted/out of print 60's and 70's R & B, Jazz, and Soul. Most of them have their moments of greatness but are, on the whole, inconsistent. This is a perfect example. The two lp's, from 1966 and 1968 both contain some blues, as you would expect from anything Jack McDuff touches; however, the first nine tracks, from the album A Change is Gonna Come, have lots of soul covers as well ("Change is Gonna Come"--Sam Cooke, "Down in the Valley"--Otis Redding, "What'd I Say"--Ray Charles). Big horn section, Bernard Purdie on Drums. But the best selections are the straight ahead "Can't Find the Keyhole Blues" and the Samba "Minha Saudade". Blues-tinged funky jazz was, and is, his specialty after all--and it shows on these two tunes. There is stand-out playing on the Double-Barreled Soul album too, like "Untitled Blues", which features David "Fathead" Newman. The good moments shine through, but one must cut through a lot of filler to get to them.

very deep soul r&b stuff.......2006-01-19
I first heard Leela on radio and really liked the track "good time" and was curious as to how the rest of the cd sounded. Firstly her voice, is very similar to Joss Stone, but slighlty deeper. Secondly the tracks on this cd sound the same, that its difficult to tell which one is playing, -not to mention the fact that for some reason, the track listing is mixed-up, you think this song is playin, only to find that its the other-(and no, my copy is no a bootleg). Thirdly for a young woman who's just just started in this business-ok maybe she's been peformin b4, she sure has issues, about men, politics, love ect, and she doesnt even spare one track to give it some "happy feeling" While the sound and musical arrangements are tight and her voice is good, I just felt this is one angry/sad lady, and the music itself takes one back to the days of race-riots, and soul-music. Though I particulary liked her take on No Doubts hit "Dont Speak" she gives it that soul sound which fits in quite well. I also liked "mistreatin me", "its alright". I just listened to the cd and feel that Its not the kind of cd you would listen to the whole day, and funny enough on the other hand, Joss Stone-who's white (whose music is also similar to Leelas" I can listen to her the whole day without getting bored. I guess it depends on how "serious" you like your music. I believe one should balance the anger in a song with the melody and not forget that it should be friendly to the ear.

At the peak of his powers.......2001-05-22
This 1986 album -- on the Rounder label, which picked up other greats who were dropped by major labels -- shows one of the great soul singers of all time in prime form. From the sweetness of the opening track, "Love Buys Love" to the uptempo shouting of Burke's own "Got to Get Myself Some Money" to the wistfully hopeful (and brilliant) cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," this album is a triumph. It grows on you, and then grows some more. Soul at its best.

Touch,taste,tone,feel-one of the greatest players!!!.......2004-09-27
Let's file this one in a space next to players like "Tim Pierce", Larry Carlton", and "Jeff Beck" and probably "Neal Schon". The guy plays great guitar solos, perfect in rock, blues and some fusion, ultimate taste and tone. They just don't make cds like this anymore it seems. I am reviewing the full length "World According to M.T." The single is ripping as well. If you like well played rock guitar you need this, plain and simple. Tunes are commercial but good.
