The Inspirations Still Sound Great After 40+ Years.......2006-08-16

Here is one great project by the legendary Inspirations. This recording showcases some of the best singing this group has done in a long time. The first cut on the record, "I've Never Gotten Over Gettin' Saved" sets the tone. It's a great song! My favorite on the project is track 4, "I Have Not Forgotten", a strong, moving ballad. Other highlights include "If You Only Knew", which may be the best solo we've ever heard from Mike Holcomb, the classic "I Know" with Archie Watkins' tenor voice and a resurrection of the song "When I Walk On Streets Of Gold". The CD closes out with the old Bear Hunter, Jack Laws, singing "My Best Friend". Highly recommended all the way around.

I guess I'm prejudiced about them as I have had the chance to meet with the group off and on over the past three decades. They are a solid a group in sound and principles as one is out there. This compilation is some of their best tracks to date whether re-recorded or just brought back to life from the vintage cuts. Whether you are hearing Archie, Troy, Eddie, and Mike, or any of the others who have come on board from time to time there is one thing that is sure. Their sound is rich, on target, and on time. This is a sure-fire gift possibility at any time of the year.

Perhaps the greatest songs of a woman in love than any R&B or Rock songs. Why are these women not more appreciated? Their song Sweet Inspiration is a much better anthem of a woman in love with a man than the Temptations My Girl or Persey Sledges When A Man Loves a Woman are anthems of a a man in love with a woman.

I not only like the feature song on this cd,but also their version of Eddie Floyd's " Knock On Wood".

Outstanding Southern Gospel CD.......2000-08-26

No doubt about it, the Inspirations have stood the test of time in the Southern Gospel music field, and I truly believe that is because their ministry has been blessed by our wonderful God. This, like all their albums is a collection of real songs about our Lord Jesus Christ and opens up with the title song, "What's That I Hear", which is about His coming when He will rapture His Church out and take us to live with Him in Heaven. I could go on and on about this CD and never say enough positive about it, but I'll just touch on a few of the high-lites. As I listened to Archie Watkins sing the high lead on "Rock Of Ages", I could feel a mighty stirring of the Holy Spirit within me. Another old hymn of the Church,"One Day" is done here in a new upbeat style, and it is at the same time toe tapping and soul stirring! "Did You Tell Someone About Jesus" asks the question we as Christians should all ask ourselves daily. The CD ends with "Bend Away Down Low" which is the classic Southern Gospel four part song with lead lines by all members of the quartet. Buy this CD. Buy extra copies and share them with your friends. This is music that all should hear!

I have 95% of all the Inspirations recordings including this one. If you are looking for great southern gospel singing with beautiful harmony this is the group you need to buy from. Not only do they sing beautiful but more importantly they LIVE what they sing about. You will not go wrong with a recording from the INSPIRATIONS, my favorite group for over 27 years!

I found this album to be truly uplifting. George Foreman has touched a chord and the use of the different performers, along with George's excellent voice, is outstanding. This album will make a difference for many who buy it. I consider it to be excellent!

This is a great cd in words, horrible in singing. This guy's like Paul McCartney. His painting a bunch of buckets of paint on a wall. This guy's music is a bunch of noise mixed into this thing that makes rap sound like gospel music. He stinks at boxing, cooking (just look at the guy), and everything else! This is a failiure of a sellout. If you think this is the chef of all time, get this cd.

this 2 cd combo was awesome. On every song they harmonize extremely well. I really enjoyed the gospel set because on the group efforts (there are two solos (What a Friend and Pilgrims of Sorrow) by Cissy Houston and I think Swing Low is completely sung by Myrna Smith) their sound is so rich and full, they sound more like a choir than 4 singers. The songs are really interesting and really inspiring. What the world Needs Now is awesome, too. The group's version of Alfie is fantastic and so is just about every other song on the cd.

AT THEIR PRIME.......2003-09-20

Hailed as one of the greatest ensemble groups in R&B history THE SWEET INSPIRATIONS (CISSY HOUSTON, ESTELLE BROWN, MYRNA SMITH, AND SYLVIA SHEMWELL) were not as big as they should have been in terms of popularity. Compared to album sales for MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS, THE SUPREMES or THE RONNETTES they were not at the top. But with one listen you become aware that they were by far more talented and polished. The main reason could be that ATLANTIC records employed them as session vocalists for every big act or solo performer at that time. If one markets their album really well maybe they are not available to perform on everyone else's record? (Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Esther Phillips, Wilson Pickett)

Be that as it may that didnt stop them from releasing some stellar soul music. This release just issued on cd in 2002 catches a gospel and pop/r&b recording.

On the gospel set(SONGS OF FAITH AND INSPIRATION)Cissy Houston (mother of WHITNEY) writes half of the tunes. The hand clapping, toe tapping "Looking on the brightside" is pure traditional gospel and inspiring. Estelle takes the lead on the accapella "He'll fight". A true testament of THE SWEET's vocal power and harmony. Other standouts are "The 23rd psalm" and Cissy's solo reading of "Pilgrim of Sorrow".

The second part of the cd brings you to the pop/r&b side with "WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE". The title track is slammed from beginning to end with the vocal power and mesmorizing harmonies this group can provide. One of the best versions of the great song ever! Their version of "Alfie" clearly overshadows Dionne Warwick's version. The whole release is consistent with first class production and special readings of classics by THE BEE GEES ("To love somebody") and even OTIS REDDING ("Thats how strong my love is"). The original "You really didnt mean it" is pure soul balladry as Cissy again takes lead on a song about a love that wasnt meant to be.

One of soul music's institutional groups deserves better recognition then they got when they were together. A great pairing of two good releases. Pick it up and enjoy. There is so much to savor!
