5 out of 5 stars Best Drum n Bass album of this decade.......2007-06-15

Wow. Words can't really even describe the heights this album has achieved, somehow Tom Withers manages to out do himself on every LP he makes. Other Electronic Music producers should really take note. (that's right, not just Junglists) Most of the album revolves around a very Old School Brit Punk sound, which we should really have more of in Drum n Bass, because lord knows modern punk bands can't do the job very well. The downtempo tunes which he has also been revered for are well placed and don't detract from the pace of the album. (although some really great tracks on the UK version aren't found in the US version, it still doesn't take away from the value this CD gives you) All in all, Klute's classic style, 80's synth homages and authentic blend of "Punk n Bass" mesh together nicely for what is easily his best work yet. It also makes for a great introductory CD for anyone wanting to get into Drum and Bass and/or Electronic Music.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the first time!!.......2007-01-15

Well, I had to buy this for a second time, my CD broke and I couldn't stand living without it anymore =P. It really is some of Dara's best! He started this line of CD's breakbeat science :Exercise 1...etc. I also just bought the 5th one mixed by Clever, and it's a little different than I usually listen to but wow what a smooth mix! As for the Dara, there isn't much else to say. He's just awesome! BUY THE CD AND START YOUR COLLECTION!!!

5 out of 5 stars A memorable DnB album.......2006-10-06

Dara's work on BBS:E1 has a good variety of songs ranging from hardcore drum n' bass tracks and blends well with softer drum n' bass songs. Truly an epic mix!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Drum and Bass Album.......2005-11-07

Features a variety of styles, not one of those albums where it sounds like we're listening to the exact same track.
Lots of hard sounds, but a few more mellow tracks as well.
Some melody, and lots of crazy beats!
Probably Dara's best work.

5 out of 5 stars Better then Dieselboy.......2005-08-12

DJ Dara is 10 times better then Dieselboy is, This is some hardcore jungle breakbeats, And you say this is no Dieselboy. This guy knows how to spin records.

4 out of 5 stars He's no dieselboy, but..........2004-11-30

A most refreshing mix. i went to the store cause i needed something new to add to my library, something with more punch than goldie, but not quite as energetic as straight up jungle. this particular installment of the breakbeat science series is different from the rest...it follows more of almost a jungle/techstep sound. it's not too heavy, but if your looking for some strong breaks, they're all right here. a must have for the all-around dn'b fan, and a great introduction to those new to the genre!

    Album Description

High Contrast exploded onto the electronic music scene in 2002 with his debut "True Colors", named one of the top ten albums of the year by URB, BPM, XLR8R, Remix, Lotus, Mixer, Rinse, Knowledge (UK), and ATM (UK). Several British publications also cited it as one of the top 100 electronic albums of all time. Not bad for a 21-year old unknown from Wales. "High Society" does more than avoid the sophomore slump by setting a new benchmark of excellence for drum and bass and for electronic music at large. Four tracks feature some of the biggest vocal talents in UK hip-hop and r&b alongside the best crossover drum and bass tunes since Reprazent and Goldie.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Almost 5 stars.......2007-05-05

High Contrast's debut "True Colors" has shaken and revived the DnB-scene in a time when it was though to be dead. Beside Roni Size' "New Forms" it is my favorite DnB-album. I have to say that I am one of the few who think that "True Colors" is better than "High Society".

Don't get me wrong, High Society is an amazing album. It is highly inventive, bringing elements into DnB which have not been used in this genre before. Tracks are highly structured and some have a strange 80's new wave feel. Gone is the funk and the jazz which were so prevalent in True Colors, tracks have become even more melodic. If not for the fast beat, many of them are close to being mainstream compatible.

Not all songs are hits, and at some points the album bores me a little. Given the CD is over 70 minutes long, that is quite natural though. It does not change my mind: High Contrast is probably the best producer/DJ in the DNB-genre at the moment. Get this album, all his others, and also consider the other artists at Hospital records, most notably Nu:Tone and London Elektricity.

    5 out of 5 stars D & B on a higher level........2006-12-13

High Contrast has really put something special together here. High Society is the best D & B album I've heard since the mid 90's. 'Lovesick' is the first & quite possibly the best track. 'Brief Encounter', 'Racing Green', and 'Twilight's Last Gleaming' are my other favorites, but every track is worth a listen. Essential listening for bassheads.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm comin' around.......2005-07-05

Let me preface this review by saying that I've been down w/ Jungle/ D&B since day one. From old scool "Dread Bass" by Dead Dred (recently resurfaced on an Andy C. mix CD) to picking up Goldie's "Timeless" the 1st week of its release (94'), and all the Metalheadz releases soon thereafter (I could on and on--but I won't bore you). I didn't like High Contrast at first (see my review of "True Colours") and this 2 step Garage/D&B hybrid thing that was taking off (any lyrics other than rude boy ragga toasting made me cringe). But then, the more Jungle parties I went to, the less women I saw there. Now, being a heterosexual male, tis' not a good thing to go out on a Sat night and be surrounded by sausage. Anyway, I now see what these fellas like High Contrast are doing--making D&B more "danceable", which is vital, because that's what brings out the ladies (it's not only that, this really is beautiful music). Anyway, this is High Contrast's best release by far (much better than "True Colors", in my humble opinion). I would list some standouts, but this whole disc is full of them and definately worth a complete listen.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Sweet.......2005-06-25

It's really hot that High Contrast wrote all these tracks

it's good to see an artist that truly swings across the board with consistent quality

    all tracks jive

In general I find some of the typically ego-jungle rappers kind of dragging

although the melodic cruise of the rest of the cd is high society

    thumbs up dudes

    DnB---- BUY THIS

5 out of 5 stars High Society indeed!.......2005-03-24

This album, as a whole, is excellent from start to finish, back to front, right to left, top to bottom...any way you play it! For drum and bass heads this is a no brainer and for everybody else this is an excellent album to start with. High Society is a beautiful album-well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars good but falls short.......2006-04-10

I like further a lot better, would recommend that to be purchased before this one, they are both good but I was expecting more from it, descent hard mix, blends well together.... B+

5 out of 5 stars This is SICK.......2006-03-15

This is definitely one of the best DnB albums I own. The track selection is amazing; the CD starts out with what initially sounds like a mellow jungle sound and a less then a minute into the track throws you face first into the bassiest, darkest sound. The second track is even more energetic and grimy sounding than the first, and it only builds from there, occasionally letting up a bit only to throw more sick bass at you. Tracks like Klute's "Glue Sniffer" and Gridlok's "Heatwave" will make you dance in the ways you have never thought possible and the last few tracks lead you out very nicely. Dara's mixing is unquestionably amazing, though maybe not as perfect as Andy C's (god of mixing) but the track selection is AMAZING (I'm repeating myself). IF YOU LIKE HARD HITTING DNB GET THIS CD

    4 out of 5 stars very good.......2005-12-05

the tracks on this album rise and fall from just "head bop" worthy, to insane "twist in wierd ways" dancing. creative, energetic. enfolds like one entire symphonic track.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing........2005-11-02

    Sup.

I think the best way to start this review is to decribe who's going to be into this. As you may know, there's two groups of DN'B fans. You have the people who dig the ponderous, jazz-infused, almost trancebreak DNB, and you have the hardcire junglists, who dig the in-your-face synth riffs and bombastic breakbeats. I'd like to put myself in the hardcore junglist section, as I like the hard/fast, not the thoughtful/trance.

This CD is for all DNB fans. It's not the hardest of the hardcore, but it's all none of that NewForms jazzybreak girly DNB. It's a mix of both DNB styles, and OH BOY what a mix it is...

DJ Dara knows his stuff, and he's picked 16 of the DNB militia's finest. If you're into the scene, you'll know names like Klute and Kathy Brown. These people have taken mere machines and made them sing the melodies of the gods -and then layered some rippin' breaks over that. It's rare to see tracks of this quality - this is some KILLER stuff. It pumps your subwoofer, and your cranium, at the same time. THERE IS NOT ONE BAD TRACK ON THIS ENTIRE CD. PERIOD.

The same quality of the tracks has gone into the mixing - all of the tracks can be played as individual songs, but it really comes together when you listen to the whole CD. The transitioning is absolutely FLAWLESS and it really demonstrates how well the tracks work together. You can put your own rave on using this CD; it's as close to a live set as you could hope for.

Whether you're one of the hardcore fans, or one of the jazzybreak fans, you're going to love this CD. I don't put my seal of approval on just any music. This is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars makes you move all crazy!.......2005-03-16

i recommend putting this in while you drive... bounce your head to it! and play it LOUD!...see what kind of looks you get! This cd is awesome....enough said...if you can make it from gonzo to disko bizkit...you're better than i... the beat is unstoppable!
    Get it!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An unbelievably hot tech house mix. .......2006-03-19

Straight through, barring one cheesy vocal track, this is a non-stop aural assault of the most sinister and high energy tech house you are ever going to hear. This mix is full of special effects courtesy of their self titled "Decks and Effects" mixing style, with Ivan on turntables and Arnaud on a laptop. I must admit, when I first checked out this CD in my local shop when it first came out, and read the back where it says "always funky, this mix encapsulates the Paris disco underground" I opted not to buy it, thinking it would be too Parisian disco funk for my tastes. I finally decided to pick it up, after hearing a few of Black Strobe's latest tracks in other mixes, and thinking they sounded very techy.

I have to say I am glad I ended up buying this, because it just blew me away. There aren't very many all tech house mixes out there, so this one is perfect. It has dark, fast beats, all the way through. I nearly slammed into a police cruiser taking a corner too fast, while listening to track 17. You have to use extreme caution when playing this one loud in your vehicle!!

The only thing keeping it from being a completely perfect mix is track 6, which is a horrible pop or alternative sounding vocal track, that totally seems out of place. I had to check my CD player for a moment, thinking I had accidentally switched the CD off and went to radio, because it sounds that odd. Then I thought maybe the record company accidentally burned the wrong track 6 onto the Black Strobe CD!

You also get a 24 minute DVD that shows you a quirky look at hidden spots in Paris you wouldn't see in other travel shows. At the end, Black Strobe talk a little about themselves and their history.

This is an incredible adrenaline rush and a super hot tech house mix you simply can't pass up.

3 out of 5 stars great album! some computer playback issues.......2006-01-07

Would be 4-stars except for some playback issues. This is more techno/dance oriented than Other Side: New York. I have had some problems playing back on some computers. I tried it on several Macs and Windows PCs. Some systems can play and rip this album fine. Some cannot even mount it. The record label is aware of the problem and has been very responsive to my feedback. Kudos to them for their help!

5 out of 5 stars love this mix cd.......2007-04-11

i received this cd as a gift after purchasing the fischerspooner cds...if you know "the other side" you realize these are mix cd's compiled by the featured band. It's not all about electronica - it's about giving you a feeling/taste of music from that city. i love this cd. i've discovered new music to listen to as well as recognizing some music i had heard previously. if you're looking for new music - and you don't live in the electronica box this is a great cd.

2 out of 5 stars What is this garbage?.......2006-07-11

This is the worst purchase I've made in quite some time.

After being blown away by Junkie XL's remix of Fischerspooner's Emerge, I felt the need to buy an album by Fischerspooner. I made a mistake. Apparently, I mistook Fischerspooner's talents for Junkie XL's talents.

This is some of the lousiest electronica I've heard.

The first song is the beginning of the trashfest. The second song, which isn't good either, is one of the somewhat tolerable tracks on the album, mostly due to a humorous hook. A lot of this sounds like alternative/punk rock/electronica.

This album has me completely confused. Is this techno? Is Coochie Coo something that Princess Superstar really expects me to be caught by? Some songs on this album are close to not being music. Every once in awhile a catchy melody or element will surface, but it is always overshadowed by something else that is annoying.

What about the mixing? What mixing??? I could have worked up the transitions on this album at the age of 14. The mixing here is utterly disappointing, which makes the album utterly disappointing. How can a DJ/artist produce an album on which only one song is his, then mix the album like an amateur?

Aside from Hacker's mediocre remix of Fischerspooner's Emerge and a few interesting moments on other tracks (Buffalo Bill... YEEHAA), there is nothing on this album worth your time. If you muster the courage to make it through all of the painful O Superman by Laurie Anderson, you will understand why this album is worth 2 stars at the most.

And the DVD? Man. The music mixed on the DVD is better than the music on the album! Don't worry... that doesn't mean it's good. It's just a bunch of footage of shops, clubs, and events around New York City. Regardless of how cool some of the featured places on the DVD are, the DVD is as pointless as the CD. Besides, it's very short, and by the time you get into it, it ends abruptly!

I want to give this 1 star, but because there are some songs here that might be worth listening to every once in awhile, like after you've exhausted all other good music in existence, I will give it two stars.

Regardless, DO NOT under any circumstances purchase this album unless it is an absolute bargain. This is pathetic.

3 out of 5 stars Best to view this as a mix CD and skip the guide porion.......2005-12-23

The idea behind this CD/DVD dualdisc is that an artist (or pair in this case) would offer a guide to the best of the "bleeding edge" of their city, along with a great mix of tracks. Put out by Time Out magazine (a fixture here in NYC, and elsewhere I presume), I had envisioned this as some sort of edgier Lonely Planet-meets-Back to mine, with a DVD tour to the city in question by the artist. What it turned out to be as a little more disappointing.

You get a twoisided "dualdisc", with a mix CD on one side, and a DVD on the other, as well as an foldout insert that includes a partial map of Manhattan below 59th, parts of Queens (enough to point out PS1), and an equally small part of Brooklyn (mostly Williamsburg, if you couldn't guess) and their attendant subways. On the reverse side from the map is a Time Out style listing of bars, clubs, restaurants, galleries, hotels, shoppping, and "illicit" establishments (including the much-derided Museum of Sex). There are also a handful of picks from Fischer and Spooner listed seperately. The places reviewed are listed (by color and number) on the subway map, and it seems like it would be easy to navigate once you understand the subway system. Also, bear in mind that all of these reviews and trends will be outdated in a couple of months - Time Out NY comes out every week for a reason.

Next up the DVD. This includes many of the same listings as the insert, as well as several videos, which are nice (and a way to justify a DVD I guess). but basically useless for review purposes. Some places in the videos (like Junior's or teany) aren't listed in the insert or on the map. The whole DVD seemed a bit poorly executed, to be honest, and rather disappointing.

Taken together the review bits are nice, and I plan to check some things listed in them out, but I'm not sure that I couldn't have found all this out just by buying the latest copy of Time Out New York or one of its competitors.

Lastly, the music. If you've been wanting Fischerspooner's own Softcore Jukebox, this is it. I would have thought it would be cooler if it had more New York based musicians, but whatever. Overall, I liked it, and would probably have liked it more if I didn't already own some of the tracks on it. No faults here.

I'm always looking for new things to do and see, so I thought that a compilation CD mixed in with a DVD guide to Fischer and Spooners' New York would be very cool. What ended up happening is that the artists (apparently) had very little input into the small guide/review section. This was a cool idea, but Time Out or whomever just didn't take it very far. Buy it if you want the music, but most people could probably have guessed that anyway.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Exercise.......2006-01-05

Out of all the Breakbeat Exercises' released under the label as 8 dollar CD's - Klute's mix 003 has more element and flow than many of the regular priced drum n bass compilations out lately.
Starting out with The Break's 'Positive/Negative' with its booming and constantly changing patterns it sets a driving mood into you. After quicky riding through 'Air Raid' you hear Klute dropping his first artist featured remix of 'Passport' and melodies quickly start take off. It gets a little funky in 'What We Give' then another Klute cut 'Galaxian' - heats up the speed even more and gives us strung melodies over ambient voices. Things get into tribal nastiness through 'Roots' and 'The Sands' when Klute drops a big track from Concorde Dawn in 04' signifying a new turning point in the mix. Next up are some of the hardest hitting tracks ive heard in a while. From 'Mean Streets' all the way through 'Growl' - Klute's best from this CD. In the middle of the song the drum skittering pattern keeps intensifying until it merges into 'Ransom' and makes you want dance like crazy! Klute then warms you up with 'Soul Good' and 'Big Boss' with some great tunes to play anytime. Overall i can't find a bad part of the CD that doesnt have enough filler to keep me occupied after a few listens.

You wont regret buying this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Whithers @ it again.......2005-07-05

This is Klute as I know him--droppin the ruffest sh** around. Right off the bat--"Pos/Neg" by Break is insane (1st listen--it blew my car speakers to all hell). As we move along thru more rude D&B--all nice, we arrive @ Mr. Amit ("Roots"), which I don't know what to call, other than absolutely sick (when I have this song playin' on my "new" car speakers, I have everyone pullin up aside me--from ghetto ruffnecks--to yuppy white men-to--Jamaican rude boys--askin me "what in the hell is that nastiness?!"). A couple of trax later we have Concord Dawn ("Take Me Away"), which either makes me suicidal or extremely happy, no in between (and no, I am not manic-depressive [that's what my shrink tells me anyway]). This is jungle music at its purest, and I'll always trust Klute to give it to me.

4 out of 5 stars Technically excellent? Yes. Bangin? No........2004-10-05

Klute is one of those guys that I respect, but just can't get into. Don't get me wrong; this is a great cd. The tracks are pretty good, and the mixing is flawless, but I like my drum and bass a little darker, a little heavier. To me, this stuff is on the light side, with the sound's emphasis on the higher end of the sound spectrum. I personally, prefer the low. So there you have it. Not my favorite, but worth 8 bucks any day, especially the Amit tracks.

5 out of 5 stars What I Like About Klute..........2004-06-15

He holds it tight/Tells me that no matter what/D&B will be alright.

He'll kiss me, smack me up, and kiss me again. Something like that seems to be what's on Klute's mind anyhow; in the notes he says, "It's such a bitch out there in the big bad world right now, but I've been warned to keep it down, so just remember...humans are also quite capable of being wonderful beings. Love them and be loved back." That tension seems to define the sequence of this mix. "Positive/Negative" starts gently, but a hard drop sneaks up on you like a car bomb. Klute carefully lightens the otherwise devastating beats with melodic moments: Calibre's "What We Give," the high-voltage dub of Amit's "Roots" (this man clearly needs his own long player). The heavy tracks hint towards current events: Silent Witness' "The Sands" and Amit's "Snake Pit" subtly conjure Iraq. Concord Dawn's anthemic "Take Me Away" becomes contextualized as a plea for safety from war and Invincible's "Mean Streets." "Undercover Dub" is modern paranoia. "Soul Good" gives us hope again, but in the end "Big Boss" (Dubya?) leaves us with the balance of love and fear. The modern world via drum'n'bass...not futurism, but our troubled present.

What I like about Klute...He'll make my floor rumble but leave me thinking, and leave me waiting for his next round of creativity.

5 out of 5 stars Klute covers the whole spectrum.......2005-06-27

I've seen (heard--whatever) Klute spin a few times, and he is unbelievable. Mostly dark , hard stuff (which is my taste--see his Breakbeat Science Exercise mix CD). This orginally produced music by him brings out some different tastes I didn't realize he had in him. I'm not going to get into his "collage of genres" cd (#2) [revision--I actually wrote this review before I had given disc #2 a full listen. There is some really good sh** here--especially for you breaks/ party dj's--that would probably never think to look in a D&B's producers direction for such trax--check "Artificial Sense" and "Overchoice"], but cd #1 has a lot of flavours on it. I'm not a big 2 step fan, but "Part of Me" is completely addicting. "Problem Reaction" and "Tacky"--("Ether" falls somewhere in between 2 step & jungle)-- are typical Klute standouts, and only he and High Conrast could even get me in the 2 stepping groove (if you can call it that). According to silly people who don't have a clue about music, D&B is fading as a genre. But w/ more producers like Klute (and High Contrast) around, it will be here to stay.

5 out of 5 stars A bright light in the wasteland that is now Drum & Bass.......2004-12-15

If you're like the other clowns in this review list that like aggressive non-funky, non-musical D&B than don't buy this album. Then you too can be part of the reason that D&B fell off a cliff into machine grinding whackness. This CD along with Calibre, Carlito & Addiction, NuTone, the brazilian sound (patife, marky, drumagick), high contrast, london electricity, is what has brought a glimmer of hope back to the scene. For the non-musical clowns, you can stay down in the basement and grab each others @sses...because there sure as hell ain't no ladies down there.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply A Masterpiece.......2004-04-22

I'm not feeling the second house/downtempo CD, but as a fan of D&B, I can honestly say that the CD1 is one of the greatest albums I've listened to. This realization took a few listens to arrive, but it arrived none the less. Klute proves that not only is he an incredible producer, but also that D&B can become just as deep/complex/beautiful as any other sound the human ear can detect.
I say without a doubt purchase this CD if you are a fan of D&B, and esspecially if you are not. It's filled me with joy, energy, and above all else- inspiration. Just incredible.

Fav tracks: ALL (I mean that)

4 out of 5 stars for the hater in you.......2004-01-26

you know why i don't get down with the jungle scene much any more...cuz i swear, more than any other music scene, there are tons of haters...snobs who won't dance they'll just stand there bickering to their friends about how DJ so and so doesn't live up to their standards instead of cutting loose and actually having a good time. that said, i'm sure klute would give a big middle finger to these types. this cd stayed in my cars deck for months and im just getting around to talking about. true there are some tunes which are only alright in my opinion it has a heaping of some of the most epic and catchy and good feeling tunes out there. oh yeah i love minimial techno, house blah blah blah but he should have definetly stayed away from releasing the second cd with the first. besides like one song that cd is dreck and is ignored in my mind. i guess there is a hater in everybody

5 out of 5 stars You should be ashamed..........2003-11-25

"There is alot to be shameful of in the music business. What was once simply a means of getting music to the people who want it is now nothing more than a burger chain. Sure this is no news as far as major record companies go but it seems the maketing disease has spread to all levels of music. In everyones desperartion to be bigger than human, the rot has set in and image and status have all but stolen musical content. Things sell these days more because people are told to buy. These are the times of lifestyles, logos, branding, market shares, and averages - and we are all effected. It's time to get back to the root of why we are all here... Music, pure and simple." Tom Withers aka Klute - CD sleeve notes of lie cheat & steal

The drum 'n' bass scene is becoming full of mediocre producers and DJs who rehash and remix the same stuff over and over again. Klute won't come out and say this directly, but I will. But like him, I won't name any names or labels. Do yourself a favor and pick this CD up if you are a fan of any type of dnb. Lie Cheat & Steal is full of distinctive, melodic, and deep drum 'n' bass, which Klute knows how to produce better than anyone else in my opinion. And always remember, "it is ALL JUST A MATTER OF OPINION."

5 out of 5 stars DnB with some class.......2007-06-11

This stuff is really good. Has a lot of emotion to it. From a technical standpoint, its some of the best DnB you'll get your hands on.. Love it!

    5 out of 5 stars The Greatest.......2006-07-11

Now first keep in mind that I NEVER write reviews, despite how great a product is, but this is the exception, I really feel like I have to say something about this one. I am a huge fan of the Drum and Bass scene to begin with, and I'm ver picky about which songs I listen to. When I first heard this cd I just about died and went to heaven. I'm very used to having a repetative driving beat continue for hours at a time, but not Pieter K. He keeps it unique and clean by creating drum rhythms that actually sound plausable and interesting with off-beats, and consistent changes in rhythm. I have to honestly say that after a long session of listening to Dn'B, as much as I thrive on it, my ears tend to get tired of the same beat punching through, but I've listened to this CD day in and day out without even thinking twice about it. I've got an extensive collection of Dn'B cd's and every now and then I find taht diamond in the rough, and this blows them all clear out of the water. Now, if you're looking for somethigh that'll give you pure raw addrenaline, this might not be your best pick, but if you're looking for something with a unique driving beat that's perfect to drive to or even just listen to at home, this is your best pick, stop looking :)

5 out of 5 stars How did he know?.......2003-11-19

How did he know to blend my two favorite types of music, Aphex Twin and DnB? No, seriously this guy is a crazy serious artist who can make some great drums harmonize perfectly with some neat-o electronic sounds. It is sweet, but if you are looking for dance tunes, well... look at someone else on BBS.

    3 out of 5 stars syncopated snare.......2003-11-11

If there was a button that eliminated the syncopated snare drum riffs that fill this album, I might be able to enjoy it. Everything else is fine, not overwhelmingly great. How did it get such glowing reviews? Perhaps I am out of the loop or not doing the correct drugs.

    Your mileage may vary...

5 out of 5 stars What Drum n Bass Wants To Be When It Grows Up.......2002-11-13

Let's face it, drum n bass has paid its dues. The eager, accelerated breakbeats that sprinted out of the early-nineties UK hardcore scene represented a drastic and unexpected shift in tone for electronic music. The infancy of drum n bass was a simple and brilliant stage, a surge of energy and tempo that married the rave and the dancehall in a gasp. Fast-forward a few years and bear witness to the awkward childhood of the genre, in which the unified community of drum n bass splintered and ventured off into a series of different camps, from the bass-heavy euphoria of jump-up to the woozy atmospherics of LTJ Bukem's Good Looking sound (for a while, a subgenre unto itself). Faced with the Great Divide of the late nineties, in which the Denizens of Brutal Rhythm faced off with the Wise Elders of Atmosphere, some of the most ardent lovers of drum n bass grew tired of the schism. Drum n bass suffered a massive exodus, with DJs, producers, and (most crucially) fans wandering off in hopes of finding the spark of originality and risk that drew them to the sound in the first place.

With this, his first artist album, Pieter K takes that risk -- with fantastic results. Encompassing abstract drum n bass (with actual working, head-bobbing beats!), deep vocal-tinged techno, and mindbendingly dubby house, Everything All The Time manages to be an essential lesson in What Drum N Bass Means. So much time has been spent by producers in proving drum n bass' formula of tempo and arrangement that even the most creative talents in the genre today seemed unwilling to step outside the format in an effort to nourish the sound. Pieter, instead, brings the production values of drum n bass (among them, broad bass tones and natural snares) to otherwise foreign speeds and formats. So successful is he in this attempt that even the deep house of Natural Light Remix (one of the standout moments on an already outstanding CD) feels as "drum n bass" as you can get -- in some ways, the track seems truer to the original spirit of the genre than much of the newest jungle emerging from the UK camps.

Besides sharing a common, decisive production value, the tracks here all feature an intimate beauty that frames the conviction of the beats with a clarity of emotion that is sorely lacking in so much contemporary drum n bass, even (or perhaps especially) in the Creative Source and Defunked outposts of the so-called "Liquid Funk" sound -- ostensibly the "soul" of modern drum n bass. The difference is apparent in the vocals, the phrasing, the fundamental intent of the composition. The yearning, bittersweet joy of "It Could Have Been You" makes generic soulful tunes seem, quite honestly, ham-fisted and insincere. A single hearing of the unbridled bliss of "All Things" made me realize that I hadn't heard ecstasy (an emotion i had quite forgotten after a long relationship with the pill of the same name) in drum n bass for quite some time. Pieter K's music has a soul that is earnest, raw, and profoundly human. In years of listening to breakbeats, I've never felt anything like it.

There is a prophetic feeling to Everything All The Time, a sort of Eureka moment in which the listener realizes that finally, after years of falling in love with all these drum n bass tunes, they're hearing real music for the first time. It's as if drum n bass suddenly went and grew up, decided it was worth realizing its potential, and called all its wayward children home for a good long cry. With this album, Pieter K sets off what may be drum n bass' first true revolution, holding the music to a musical and artistic standard that few artists before seemed to believe it could attain.
