Customer Reviews:
An ingenius and innovative cd.......2007-02-01
I certainly do not have a tremendously extensive background in music, however I think this c.d. should be rated with 6 stars. The cd is well mixed, and by that I mean, the balance between the songs which are instrumental and those who have vocalists are well balanced. Which is something most bands never grasped the importance of. If you have ever listened to a cd with 20 songs by the same artist or the same group of 4 or 5 people you can understand that. I would put this cd in a class of jazz fusion, and the only other group which mixes instrumentals with vocalists and is as well, ingenius and innovative is the band Galactic. My friends who have listened to this cd have given me the same reaction, which is basically "wow, this is great. Most generally I prefer club compilations simply because they have a better balance of artists and instrumentation than other venues. I also believe club music will set trends for all other music venues: jazz, funk, pop etc.
Solid deep funk album.......2003-10-13
Hadn't heard about Black Heat but decided to pick up a bargain copy of this album. I was pleasantly surprised. Solid musicianship that sounds like an extension of War and Mandrill in being very percussion driven. I dig the organ in the mix. Vocally, they seem to have a passable band vocalist rather than a knock an audience dead front man, and that may be one reason they didn't get the sales that would have led to longevity.
If you're wise enough to cover "Love the Life I Live", one of my favorite Kool and the Gang tunes, and can do it with the Funk, you can get a positive review out of me. I dug "Jungle" as well. Get your War compilations, and your Kool and the Gang stuff funk for jazzy instrumental based funk. Nevertheless, this is a solid set of deep funk worthy of investigation for those building a comprehensive funk collection with some choices outside of the beaten path.
franks funky taste.......2002-04-04
I was surprised to see this Two cd set in my music store the other day. A friend of mine turned me on to this band a few years back, and I was lucky that I found a very clean copy of the record. My only complant about this new cd is the sound, it is very loud in volume. The bass is way up to loud. I have another cd from this same record company also has the same problem. I'm not sure if this is re-mastered or they just turned up the volume to much. Other then that, the music has all the funk and jams that you been missing., but hold on to your vinyl.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !.......2001-06-06
Man, I've been waiting a century for this to come back in print ! ! ! We're talking sizzling '70s funk here right along the lines of Mandril, War, early Funkadelic, Ripple and Rasputin Stash... cuts with the rare energy of soul classics like Edwin Starr's WAR and James Brown's Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved - - now you know stuff like that is hard to beat ! An Atlantic label funk group from the early '70s, The sound is fat, lot's of bottom, sizzling Hammond, crackling congas, angry horns, driving Hammond... Pure energy... tight production, I've had beat up copies of three of their albums for almost 15 years, and trust me... they've never warn out... (Apparently rappers haven't gotten tired of 'em either... though I'm surprized probably their most heavily sampled tune "Zimba Ku" didn't make it !) - - If you haven't heard Black Heat... something is missing in your life... definitely, grab this while its still available and play it LOUD ! ! !

Good soul singing here!!.......2003-05-20
If you like smooth sould male vocals you will like this cd. Don't know why this is not getting any play here in the United States but I hear it quite often on soul24-7.com, a UK internet soul station. We are missing out here in the US. I highly recommend this cd.

Essential sounds for your be-ing.......2003-02-07
A work of ultimate beauty. Grooves that will ground you, and make your feet happy for being on the Earth. Evertime time I play it, be it a party or a yoga class, people are asking about it and wanting to know where they can get a copy. You will not be disappointed! If you dig moving your body and being alive you will dig this cd. Black Cherry is as essential for the ears and soul as breath is to our lungs and life. Inhale it.
Fluid and mesmerizing.......2003-02-05
Rather addictive as well! This is Organic Grooves' 'remix'
of an album by a pair of jazz musicians (William Parker and Hamid Drake). Although, on picking up the original ('Piercing The Veil' - intense!), I found that OG had decided to focus in on a specific selection of the seemingly infinite groove/loop potentials on the original, and really build upon them - making something wholly unique in the process. Source material includes upright bass, trap kit, tablas, shakuhachi (a Japanese wooden flute) and bombard (Middle Eastern double reed - think Master Musicians of Jajouka). Tremendously rich material for OG to work their song-form, dub-heavy, subtly psychedelic magic on. Organic grooves indeed!

Album Description
This eclectic debut album has songs influenced by Latin, Indian, Asian and Classical music. A gutsy and risk taking performance Searching is a musical adventure for the Jazz enthusiast. Of the nine songs on the album, seven are original tunes. These songs are as eclectic as the band. The title song "Searching" has Latin roots with the three percussionists setting the groove. The beauty of "Nikita" offsets the aggressive nature of "Malcontent". Drawing from the many cultures of the San Francisco Bay area, "Goddess" uses tabla and tanpura to give the song an Indian flavor and "Coalescing" has Asian and classical hints. "The Source" is a solid modern jazz tune with an interesting bass groove. The group displays their avant-garde roots on jazz standards "Footprints" and "Lonely Woman" as they perform them with high energy and emotion. While Searching is Michael's quest for his voice in Jazz, it is also a musical adventure for all that listen.

Made the awful commute to work wonderful!.......1999-11-04
Nice variety of sounds. Something different but still very enjoyable for us old timers. Liked it so much I even recommended it to my boss!
Cooke Quartet, bringing it back.......1999-11-03
The Cooke Quartet is a bringing back the old school flavor missing from todays Jazz scene. Michael Cooke is an amazing sax player, who has put together an equally amazing group. This CD will blow your mind, a must for all Jazz lovers!
Excellent Old-School Jazz.......1999-10-07
The Cooke Quartet is a new band out of the Bay Area that pays tribute to the Old School Jazz sounds of Coltrane, Miles, Monk, etc. The combination of standards and orginals give hope to the current Jazz scene. If you are looking for some "new" music to put beside your "Live at Birdland" CD, this is it.
Innovative and emotional jazz!.......1999-09-16
Searching is a great album. It is not glossy or slick. It is jazz played with emotion from the soul. It made me feel as though I was sitting in a jazz club in the by-gone days, listening to musicians tell their stories of love, sorrow and joy through music. This group reaches the inner soul of us all!
ageless.......1999-09-13
As a older female adult, I found this CD very enjoyable. I think any age lover of jazz will find something to truly relate to.

Customer Reviews:
I loved this Jive-O-Matic album!.......2004-02-18
I was sceptical about a funk band doing an acoustic album, but boy do they deliver with this one. Each song stands on its own, and judging from what I've read on www.jiveomatic.com the full band CD is going to continue the trend of high quality original songs. check out this album because Jive-O-Matic knows how give you your money's worth.
