This is such a great cd for relaxing with a glass of wine and candles. It really makes the soul feel good.

5 out of 5 stars new age/space music prime choice.......2006-11-07

Kerala Dream is a very special album of space music, akin to that heard on NPR's "Music From the Hearts of Space". The last cut, "Samadhi", is especially fine and contemplative, with a subtle sitar creating soothing melodies and a calming mood. Some of the songs have flute and bass. This album has a variety of sounds, from environmental sounds from India, to vocals and sounds from the Amazon. This album goes especially well with yoga practice and exercises. This album is a exemplary blend of musical forms from India, environmenatal, and Western styles. I use this album to go to sleep to and I frequently do not remember the last cut since by then, I am fast asleep. Very relaxing album and I highly recommend it to yoga enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all........2006-03-19

If you are looking for music with an Indian flavor, and a sure bet, look no further. This is great music for Yoga practice, or just relaxing. Sample Durga Shakti, and Guru Brahma and you 'll see what I mean. The sounds of Amazonian frogs and birds, the sitar, and awesome vocals make this CD unique, and just a pleasure to listen to.

Album Description

Undercurrents of thundering tribal drums and primal rhythms awaken the wisdom of the ancients while haunting Native flute and keyboard melodies conjure the elements of the Earth in this greatly anticipated collaboration between best-selling Sequoia Records artist Steve Gordon (Sacred Earth Drums) and acclaimed Spotted Peccary Music artist Deborah Martin (Under the Moon). Rattles and shakers, ocarinas, acoustic guitars, textural electric guitars, hand drums, and sculpted electronic soundspaces are all combined to transport the listener to a world of delicate beauty and raw power.

5 out of 5 stars Calming and comforting.......2002-04-18

I enjoy New Age genre and Native American music and this collection was recommended to me by a 19 year old friend who shares the interest. Although my husband complains that it's a little "repetitious," I find Ancient Power very relaxing. It speaks for a more spiritual part of self than I can usually express in words. I have recently suffered the loss of a close personal friend, and this collection has allowed me to come to terms with it without the need to intellectualize. Calming and comforting.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually rich and imaginative musical flows.......1999-01-24

The liner notes accompanying this CD tell you about the instruments used -- Taos Drums, Shakers, Turtle Rattles, Keyboards, Rainstick and so on. And apparently both the artists (Deborah Martin/Under the Moon and Steve Gordon/Sacred Earth Drums) have achieved some recognition independently.

Their combined effort here is seamless. If you can imagine sitting out West in the high desert, perhaps a thousand years ago, and if you could hear the sounds of the spirits of the people and the elements of sun, wind and fire that were the basis of their spiritual life, this is what you'd hear.

The songs flow melodically with rhythm and authenticity. Very relaxing to listen to. Buy a new candle, cut the lights down and feel the Ancient Power.

4 out of 5 stars Soothing Sounds.......2007-01-10

Purchased this CD to help my 6th grader with an Ancient Egypt social studies presentation. She played this CD in the background and it played well. Good for background music, soothing and melodic.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient music for a modern audience.......2006-02-28

I second all the rave reviews featured above. However, I should add for the record: this CD is sometimes labelled (as mine is) as "IMMORTAL SOUNDS: A Musical Journey Through Ancient Egypt", published through Antenna Audio, Inc., CA. I found the recording at the New Orleans Museum of Art when a large travelling exhibit of Egypitan art and artifacts was on display. The music served as the background for the audio guide (under narration by Jeremy Irons) and was sold in the gift shop with the tour's other goods. I was trying to find info on the CD, and when I couldn't find it under that name, I got redirected to this entry. I thought I'd just clarify! :o)

But yes, indeed - beautiful, serene, and indeed ethereal music!

5 out of 5 stars Bringing to life Ancient Egyptian music.......2003-02-13

Hello,

Ambient Egypt brings ancient Egyptian music to life.
I would rate this CD as highly as these other ancient Egyptian music reconstructions, Michael Atherton`s Ankh and Ali Jihad Racy`s Ancient Egypt. In my opinion the strengths of this CD are the use of authentic reconstructed instruments which have as Irvine states: "the potential to create new music".

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable tranquility.......2002-12-09

A masterpiece in instrumental music replicated from Ancient Eqypt.

5 out of 5 stars He loved it!.......2002-08-12

I bought this as a gift for my partner who is big into "ancient Egypt" and the like -- far more as a layperson than as a scholar. He said the music was very relaxing and inspiring for his artistic endeavors though it also helped him get to sleep when he was already tired. The idea to try and recreate the music based on surviving instruments is a great one and avoids some of the serious errors of early archaeologists and scholars who attempted to use the actual instruments. I can't say that it is "accurate" in terms of representing a historical reality, but is a fair job of making music that can help a modern person relate to ancient Egypt. I'd probably use it as a intro to a basic history class on this period.

Though Robert Earl Keen was previously best known as Lyle Lovett's college buddy, this 1989 release established the Texas troubadour as a master of the musical narrative. His ambitious story songs extend from the rambunctious anthemry of "The Road Goes On Forever" (later covered by Joe Ely) to the bittersweet border balladry of "Mariano." Other highlights include the deadpan hilarity of "It's the Little Things" and the deadly serious "Love's a Word I Never Throw Around." While Keen's singing tends toward nasal monotone, the strength of the songcraft and the sprite settings established by producer Jim Rooney and a virtuosic band transcend the vocal limitations. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Vote for REK's Best Overall CD.......2006-08-13

Stellar throughout. Excellent songwriting, with all but two of the songs penned by REK. Of course there is the classic "Road", but this is just chock-full of excellent songs - songs of love, adventure, heartbreak, etc. Hard to beat having Jerry Douglas featured on most tracks. An earlier, simpler Robert Earl Keen. Highly recommended if you are only going to buy 2-3 of his CDs for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Belated followup.......2005-08-08

Hard to believe it had been nearly five years since Keen's last studio album when "West Textures" emerged fully formed form the dusty plains of the Lone Star State (Keen had issued a live album in the interim but both it and it's studio predecessor, "No Kinda Dancer", had long been forgotten, if ever they'd been truly discovered in the first place; no, nearly everyone who considers themself an "old school" REK fan picked up on him with this album and backtracked over the previous two afterward). Although only having one real breakout hit, "West Textures" set the template for not only Keen's repertoire but a host of imitators, something "No Kinda Dancer" - though near perfect in it's own right - failed to do.But what a hit that breakout was. "The Road Goes On Forever" cemented Keen's legend instantly, being covered immediately by other notable Texas luminaries such as Joe Ely, and even if the mass country audience didn't discover it until a few years later when the live version hit radio, the impact was felt not only on a younger breed such as the likes of Pat Green, but Keen's hardened tales of unexpurgated life on the cowboy edge both informed and validated a generation of his idols and predecessors (is it any wonder Guy Clark experienced a resurgence about this time, not only in popularity but in songcraft as well?). Keen's manifesto was liberal amounts of Steve Earle (whose "Tom Ames' Prayer" he would go on to cover) fused with the irreverent folk of John Prine and maybe a little Rodney Crowell (a fellow Houstonian) as well. "The Road Goes On Forever", for those who remain blissfully ignorant of it's existence, is one of those tunes that sets into the cranium instantly, a brash mixture of ecstatic fiddles and outlaw lyrics updated to feature the modern drug culture (something his fellow Steve Earle must surely approve of). Far from being a mere cautionary tale on the inauspicious fate which meets drug dealers, "Road..." instead goes the far more humanistic route of illustrating what makes a man with nothing to lose resort to things which he may know is not in his best interests, which makes the characters' eventual downfall feel more like the climax of a Greek tragedy than a comeuppance. Though "The Road Goes On Forever" remains the best song on the album, Keen reveals on songs such as "Mariano" the Hispanic influence which would bear full fruit on the "Gringo Honeymoon" record. Similarly, "Five Pound Bass" is a bit of a novelty/party song, blissfully vapid and intended as nothing more than an ideal drunken singalong for his live shows. "Love's a Word I Never Throw Around" is representative of his later mid-tempo ballads, with "Jennifer Johnson and Me" being actually something of an anomaly, rather old fashioned in it's folk leanings and more reminiscint of the high school romanticism of 50s rock, but the emotion is genuine and it remains one of his most gripping tunes. So we've got the second of REK's five star albums - the debut being the first - which doesn't mean that there aren't mediocre songs on board (Keen's CDs always have at least one or two throwaway tracks), but sandwiched between the rest of the masterpieces and near-classics they don't detract much from the overall listen. The prime cuts on "West Textures" soar high enough above the standards of excellence that the few middle-of-the-road stragglers fail to bring the album down to the realms of mere mortal accomplishments. Keen would make better albums but he could never again sound this fresh, this vital.

5 out of 5 stars Another of the good ones..........2001-02-14

Robert Earl strikes again with "West Textures," a perennial road trip, drinking and barbecue favorite.

"The Road Goes On Forever" is the jammin' ballad that turns Keen concerts into revivals, with full-grown men and women frothing at the mouth with a down-with-The-Man fervor. "The Five Pound Bass" is the time-honored search for the fish *thiiiiiiis* big [it's as big as a goddamned BABY], "It's the Little Things" the plight of annoyed married folk far and wide [and adapted by comedian Rodney Carrington in "Little Things" on "Hangin' With Rodney], and "Don't Turn Out the Light" the ever-familiar story of the drunk arriving home after a night at the bar.

In contrast, "Sonora's Death Row" spins a tale of an accidental killing on a cowboy's night off in a Mexican town, the unavoidable weight of a Guanajuato man's separation from his family in "Mariano," and the reflections of first love in "Jennifer Johnson & Me." My personal favorite, however, is "Love's a Word I Never Throw Around," a simple declaration of a man's love in spite of his ending relationship. Robert Earl doesn't often bend to the pressure for a happy ending, and that honesty makes his work stick long after the CD stops playing.

5 out of 5 stars West Textures is REK at his Best.......2001-02-02

Though I only recently discovered Roberl Earl Keen, I now own all his CDs (except the 2nd live album because all the songs are on other CDs). If I need a Keen fix, West Textures is where I start. Thanks MRP for turning me on to Bob.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST buy.......2000-12-16

Every song on this cd is great. This was my first REK purchase but it won't be my last. I will be purchasing the rest of his collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Yoga.......2004-03-07

I use Marina Raye's music in my yoga classes and I find it perfect to create an atmosphere of introspection and harmony. The peaceful sound of the flute stills the mind without effort.
And, contrary to some of the other cd's I own, the high pitched tone of the flute never becomes boring or irritating.
There are no big differences in melody or rythm between the tracks, which makes this cd very suitable for a yoga class.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE.......2004-03-05

From the first owl hoot to the last quivering breath of her deep and resonant F#, marina raye transports the spirit into new dimensions on her Blissful Journey. Marina is truly unique among native american style flautists. She leaves behind the chirps and whoops of fancy fingering to use her own breath to hold and sustain you peacefully in "the best vibrato in the business". She breathes deeply to play, and so you do, too when you listen. She lets notes linger in the air, shivering slowly and peacefully. I guarantee, this will put you into a state of deep relaxation and meditation faster than any other CD!

5 out of 5 stars Blissful Journey.......2003-07-18

Marina Raye's "Blissful Journey" was introduced to me in a massage session. Its soothing, healing, uplifting quality made it a CD I wanted for my own. Since acquiring "Blissful Journey," I have collected all of Marina's recordings and eagerly look forward to each new one. Her simple, pure sound is excellent for meditation. It is also a favorite with guests as background music.

5 out of 5 stars LAGQ Guitar Heroes by the LAGQ.......2005-03-24

This was the Grammy award winner in classical crossover for 2005. It is great if you appreciate the innovators in 20th century guitar music. Listen to The "Assad Duo" and a rock remedition of a Michael Hedges tribute" Lament and Wake which stand out. Both these songs got great reviews as arrangements by the newspaper critics. Get the multi channel version if you have a a top notch audio system with the speakers to show off the enginneering. If you just want "pretty" background music this is not an album for you.

4 out of 5 stars A Guitar Grimoire for 6 string enthusiasts.......2004-08-14

This is an exciting display of 6 string prowess that really isn't classical, yet will inevitably become a classic. It is an amazing tour de force worthy of the California Guitar Trio. The efforst here focus on composers and players who are heroes to this quartet, and it is a compendium of the best: McLaughlin, Hendrix, Metheny, Towner, Howe, Rheinhart. Each and every selection is brilliant whether they are essaying Norman Blake or Frank Zappa. York, Tennant, Kanengiser and Dearman command their instruments with power and discipline, and the finessse and passion leaps off the strings. The fretwork is a tribute to each of the heroes honored, and indeed this is truly an honouring of great fretmen. The digital encoding of the disc is such that you get a very precise definition of who is playing spacially from right to left. Very impressive, as you would expect from Telarc.
Their take on Towner's "Icarus" is both timely and quite a creative adjustment of the tempo. Steve Howe's "Mood For A Day" undergoes a makeover as a flamenco tour de force, and it actually comes off even more amazing than Howe's various re-workings of this abstemious wonder. At times, the compositions are those of the heroes, at others it is the LAGQ's composition evoking essential qualities of the personalities honoured. It works beautifully on all accounts. If you are a fan of acoustic guitars, or even of any of the guitarists honoured here, you owe it to yourself to pick this up.

Armen Chakmakian is a rare artist. His compositions are not anything like the bland New Age cacaphonies that are floating around out there, even though his music is lumped in that category. His music has a haunting quality that creates a yearning for something that you can't quite grasp. It is mystical but completely unpretentious. Chakmakian has the unique ability to translate the longings and sighings of a heart into captivating music.

I just saw him at the House of Blues in New York. He is amazing live and his music is both refreshing and innovative. I haven't heard anything this good in a long long time. His Funky, Jazz, Techno, Guitar laden sound is hypnotic. Bought 3X after the show can't stop playing it.

Yes, he's done it again. Gooding continues to amaze us with his brilliant work with 3X. For all you out there that are already fans, this is definitely awesome. If you havne't had the chance to check this album out yet, definitely do it. He is phenomenonal. In a time where music lacks creativity and isn't uniform pop, Gooding shines. Album Description

If Nick Drake decided to hit the open road with Cat Stevens and Ryan Adams, the first album they'd likely put in would be David Berkeley's "The Confluence." It's an acoustic gem, a layered wash of natural sounds (mandolin, cello, guitars, bass, African percussion, warm harmonies). The melodies are intoxicating. The lyrics are poetic. The music is honest. The songs are linger in your brain.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Catch a Rising Star.......2003-07-13

Sweet but not cloying, the music on this impressive debut album will draw you in and keep you there. Berkeley's arresting melodies and gorgeous voice alone make this cd worth buying. But listen carefully to the provocative lyrics, and you'll discover that this talented young man not only can sing but also has something to say.

5 out of 5 stars The Rebirth of Acoustic Music.......2003-03-19

This is a damn good CD. God, David Berkeley can sing.
If you like music that you'll feel as opposed to just hear, if you like lyrics that will make you think, pick up this CD.
