3 out of 5 stars waiting to exhale.......2007-05-23

'breathe' is such an entrancing melody and is so well-supported by its gentle dancing drum track that it was a natural conclusion to assume the rest of the disc would be as great.

it isn't. in fact, it's a little dull and not at all as coolly seductive as 'breathe'. it's a pity there may not be any new efforts to come along and show that telepopmusik is more than a one-trick technopony.

3 out of 5 stars 1 good song.......2007-05-12

just breathe.. the rest is alright is you like floaty Euro techno...

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but a little annoying at times.......2006-11-10

While I like most of the songs the weird nature sounds between some of the songs was annoying and repetitive. I didn't need another version of "Breathe" in there as well as I totally feel it is way played out and I'm sick of it. But don't get me wrong, I liked 90% of the songs. Still waaaay way better than any of the junk you'll hear on the radio these days. In fact, I already orderd their follow-up, "Black Milk".

3 out of 5 stars Make your desires reality.......2006-10-24

A lot of lesser-known bands get known by commercials, which then have people mumbling, "What's that band, the one that did that song."

In Telepopmusik's case, it was the song "Breathe" on a VISA commercial. Anyone searching for "Genetic World" for that reason probably won't be disappointed, but keep in mind that this is merely middling electronica -- not terrible, but it never ascends to anything higher than a pretty, flawed curiosity.

It opens with the aforementioned "Breathe," an ethereal little downtempo that blossoms out into a rippling trip-hop melody. "Another day/just breathe... I'm used to it like that," a voice like a downbeat robot sings quietly. It's undeniably the best song on the album, and from there on, it's never quite the same.

It proceeds with the complex, ever-shifting "Genetic World," and trips through a few trip-hop ballads, which never quite find their focus but are quite pleasant to listen to. Then the entire sound changes dramatically -- suddenly it's fast-blipping techno with robotic vocals, and a hideously awkward hip-hop song that sticks out like a sore thumb.

The album recovers somewhat after that, with the trip-noise experimentation and some transcendent balladry. Things finally wind down with the strange, bittersweet techno of "L'Incertitude D'Heisenberg," followed by the extended mix of "Breathe," which really adds little to the song (especially since it's only a minute longer).

There are moments of greatness in Telepopmusik, but most of the time they simply meander through simple, dreamy trip-hop music. This trio can work a repeating beat and throw in some cricket sounds -- their music never quite becomes dancey, but their electronic beats are too sharp for downtempo or chillout.

But they know how to mold it -- there are hollow echoes, sweet soundscapes, tinkly little interludes, and a backdrop of swelling strings. The end result is not exactly memorable, but it's a pleasant enough diversion, and some of the lyrics are enough to capture the imagination, such as the spoken intro of "Genetic World." The female vocals -- I'm not sure whose they are -- differ from song to song, sounding strong in one song, but grating painfully in another.

The biggest mistake is when these guys try to dabble in hip-hop and sampling -- "Da Hoola" is an atrocity of clashing styles, as if some random rapper laid his vocals over an ordinary Telepopmusik song. And "Let's Go Again" is simply appalling -- it's basically an excuse to have some guy (who sounds like a creep) repeat "let's go again!" as many times as possible.

Telepopmusik have some talent, and "Genetic World" is a pretty if unmemorable little album -- minus two songs that ruin the flow. Nice, but flawed.

3 out of 5 stars Umm..........2006-07-22

I got this album a few weeks ago and I've been trying to get a taste of it. Truth is, "Breathe" is a fine track, which I've been into since the car TV ad years ago. But everything else is bland, and boring. Perhaps it's me finding it flat, for I've been a big Trip Hop fan ever since I saw a Morcheeba video back in 1997. I would recomend Mandalay, Hooverphonic, Daughter Darling, Morcheeba, Olive, Lamb, and of course, Portishead, if you're looking for interesting Trip Hop with sultry female vocals.

PD: I'm not under 13. But I can't login to Amazon from work. SO there... ;)

From Amazon.co.uk

If there were an award for the album with the most appropriate title, surely Telepopmusik's Angel Milk would be a top contender (possibly pipped to the top slot by Metal Machine Music. But this record is miles away from Lou Reed's deliberate atonal noise, and would therefore win any award thanks to its delightful content. Anyone familiar with the template set by Genetic World will be surely chomping at the bit for the goodies on display here. All the familiar elements are in place--the candyfloss-light beats, the grandeur of the orchestral washes, the hints of discordant electronica and clatter--but wrapped up in the most laid-back accessible tunes you could want. The use of three vocalists--the Kelis-like Angela McCluskey, rapper Mau, and new addition Deborah Anderson, whose breathy tones lend an extra sheen to her songs--only adds to the appeal. Comparisons to Air's Moon Safari are inevitable, but a closer relation would be Zero 7's Simple Things. Even then, there's diversion here, like the perfect should-be Bassey showtune of "Love Almighty," or the deceptive ending of "15 Minutes" which lasts that long, but is about a minute of tune, followed by 14 minutes of silence. Indispensable. --Thom Allott

5 out of 5 stars Just a beautiful album.......2007-03-06

So different from the last one,
I think they realized that since the last album's trip hop songs were such a hit, they did this whole album almost completely all trip hop.
Well, they succeeded, it's just amazing, male and female smooth raspy voices that truely bring you to a new place, awesome lyrics and deep downbeat instruments..just an amazing album.

5 out of 5 stars How Is This Only 4 1/2 Stars?.......2007-01-13

When buying this album, I was really hoping the atmosphere of the music would be like that of the cover. Infact, at first.. that was the only reason I bought the album because of the cover and the catchy band name. It sounded very creative, dreamy, and artistic.

Little did I know how great this CD would be! This is one of the rare blind buys that I'm really grateful that I did. Not every song is the best, but all of them are atleast 4/5.

Favorites include:
Stop Running Away
Anyway
Into Everything
Close
Swamp

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and Refreshing.......2006-11-10

I love this cd. The guest singers are so mellow and sultry. My sister loves it too. If you ever want to feel good and sexy, play this cd. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars What's Behind the other Door? .......2006-07-17

"When love come calling
don't look back
When love comes calling
don't look away..."

Laid-back breathy vocals deliver meaningful lyrics within a scattered landscape that smoothes into silky streaming sways and relaxing rhythms. The hypnotic elements invite you into a landscape of pop friendly electronica where human emotion and machine magic create a romantic space. With enough excitement in the energy to keep your attention, Telepopmusik's chill-out tracks are still easy enough to listen to late at night.

"All we need is peace of mind..."

As you mellow "Into Everything" there are intriguing ripples of sound and butterfly wings fluttering in sweet melodies that seem to echo inside caves by oceans. I love the visual images of falling from clouds.

"Love's Almighty" has flutes and classical piano and then turns jazzy. You may think you are hearing something from a classic movie where lovers dance in and out of shadows and light with perfect form.

Sitar-like sounds, bells and rap mix within an intriguing world music escape in Last Train to Forever. Close is smooth and chaotic all at once but maintains a low profile. Swamp has an edgy frightening quality as if something will jump out at you at any moment. Dark and mysterious, it turns jazzy.

Nothing's Burning starts out with the same tentative steps and relaxes into orchestral grandeur. Ambushed has an otherworldly mood with rockets taking off into outer space and angelic voices. This wakes you up a little, just in case you were thinking you would be falling asleep at this point. It ends almost as quickly as it begins. Hollywood has deep waves of sound reverberating through cavernous underground spaces with rap in places. Tuesday sounds like a waterfall and an outdoor choir, one of my favorite tracks that almost ends too soon.

Another Day starts with a humorous message telling us we are now on our own and "good luck." Birds, waterfalls and stars falling from the sky seem to indicate we have arrived at a tropical location. I kept waiting for something to happen...something to happen. Silence. Should I be meditating? I feel vibrations in my headphones as if someone is singing silently. No, I have not unplugged my headphones, it really is silence. lol 15 minutes is about flying, but I'm not exactly sure what happens after track 13, because pretty much nothing is happening.

The variety within a basic framework of stabilizing sounds provides heightened interest and listening to the entire CD, you can enjoy each artistic expression without having to control your environment or skip over tracks. Simply put this CD in and relax into a nighttime mood. I get it, we are supposed to be falling asleep at the end. How cute. The CD stays with you until you drift off into dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Telepopmusik gets Close and Into Everything with their Sophomore album.......2006-04-15

Do I know you from somewhere? Aren't you those people who produced "Breathe" from the Misubishi commericial, toured with critically acclaimed shows, and produced the introduction to Janet Jackson's "Damita Jo" album? Yeah! That's it! That great band who introducted me to the world of Trip-Hop. I missed you.

Angel Milk is another gem from Telepopmusik and proved to the media that they can top the dance hit "Breathe." With the addition of one new guest vocalist, Deborah Anderson (Daughter of Jon Anderson from the rock band Yes) and keeping the regular Angela McCluskey and Mau, the band managed to keep its unique solid sense of style and meaninful lyrics.

Don't Look Back - I would buy the album even if this was the only track on the CD. It is amazing. 10/10

Stop Running Away - Deborah Anderson creates almost cult sounding vocals while telepopmusik gives a soft ambient like instrumental. 8/10

Anyway - WHAT?! Mau is singing?! And he sounds good at that! Telepopmusik's instrumental drifts into left field alternative rock while keeping strictly in the lines of Trip-Hop. Mau's lyrics show devotion to a signifigant other in that he would "break every single rule for you" ..or at least he'd try to. This is a perfect track! PERFECT. 10/10

Into Everything - The first single and great choice. I don't like the instrumental part at the chorus as I feel it is too complicated but it is still very nice! This song would've been great even without Deborah Anderson's vocals but she adds a special spark to it. 9/10

Love's Almighty - I don't like this one as much but I do like when Angela McCluskey "starts it again" it's a great build up. 8/10

Last Train to Wherever - Mau's classic spoken word and rapping style shows itself on this track as Telepopmusik creates a mysterious instrumental. 9/10

Brighton Beach - Perfect. Period. 10/10

Close - More than perfect. 11/10

Swamp - This track is okay. Telepopmusik did a great job at incorporating organic instruments in with electronic style. It's not really my type of music though. 8/10

Nothing's Burning - Nothing's Burning is nothing special. 6/10

Ambushed - A very interesting interlude-like song. Deborah Anderson does great with her adlibing vocals. 9/10

Hollywood on my Toothpaste - See Last Train to Wherever 9/10

Tuesday - What?! Mau is singing again!? With the help of Deborah Anderson?! NO WAY!!! Telepopmusik provides an amazing precussion. 10/10

Another Day - Ahh...it's like a sequal to L'incertitude D'heisenberg, the instrumental track on the first album "Genetic World." IT IS A REAL SHAME THIS SONG IS SO SHORT. It could've easily beaten L'incertitude D'heisenberg. 9/10

15 Minutes - ..A nice outro..I think..

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful but hard to find.......2005-01-02

I heard this on the Mistubishi commercial, then I saw the music video on VH1 and ordered the CD single. There are probably a thousand different mixes of the song "Breathe"; the original Genetic World track, the music video track, the "Radio Edit" on the single CD, the extended mix, the scratch massive mix, 2 other mixes on the single CD, the one I actually heard on the radio, etc. The track from the original CD has actual lyrics, not just "just breathe" over and over again (not that that's a bad thing). The version I heard on the radio has loud drums throughout. My favorite version is the "Breathe Radio Edit" on the single CD. If you just want the song you heard on the freaking commercial, get this CD. The only good songs are the first and the fifth. Still, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent..hypnotic vocals and melody..........2004-09-21

I heard this song on the commercial, and instantly loved it...but I couldn't find the title anywhere...finally, while crate digging at a record store in a mall, I saw the name, Telepopmusik, and remembered seeing it in a British dance magazine. So I decided to listen to it, and well..the rest is just pure enjoyment. This song destroys dancefloors everywhere I go. Well produced, hypnotic, and very emotive. when placed after a non-melodic song in a dj set, it totally brings the crowd from the bar to the dancefloor..the hands go up in the air, and the crowd loses themself in the melody and beautiful vocals. Buy this single now!

4 out of 5 stars Telepopmusik- Breathe.......2003-03-20

First heard Telepopmusiks "Breathe" on local radio station, missed the name of the song, but then while watching television
I heard the song again in the Mitsubishi commercial and got the name. Love the relaxed chilled back sound of "Breathe" the smooth background beats, and simple repetitive vocals create an enjoyable listening experience, track vibes positively. A nice background track for a commerical, however I wont be going out and buying a Mitsubishi any time soon!

3 out of 5 stars Breathe is for Mitsubishi's mini-SUV commercial.......2003-03-05

Mitsubishi featured The Dirty Vegas tune Days Go By in their Eclipse commercials...the one with the lady doing that "popping & locking" style of dancing in the front seat, while her male counterpart in the back seat seems to be doing the same (and the driver just grins and digs it).

In Mistubishi's ad for their mini-SUV, which features a bald light-skinned black man driving various people various places (like the lady in the passenger seat with those rose petals that float up to the ceiling of the vehicle)? That's the commercial that features Telepopmusik's single Breathe.

Of course...the regrettable, truly annoying Mitsubishi commercial for their Lancer model (I think) features that utterly obnoxious Barenaked Ladies tune that everyone in the commercial actually sings along out-loud to, rather than simply miming it as in previous commercials with previous songs.

Personally, I hate that song and that commercial so much, I'd never buy that car from them...ever...based solely on how much i loathe the commercial (and as far as i'm concerned, i'll never buy a Barenaked Ladies album either...that's how much i loathe that commercial and that song).

4 out of 5 stars Second string..........2003-03-03

The second string of advertisements from Mitsubishi was coupled with "Breathe". Just wanted to clarify this.

All this an more as far as influences go, this is such an awesome cd, I bought it originally for one song " love can damage your health" The type of style that Angela shows in this cd is absoultely great, her voice is hard to explain except for a cross between Billie Holiday and Goldfrapp and Portishead all together, absolutely Awesome, if you have a true love for all sorts of music then you will not be dissapointed with this cd whatsoever. Buy it, it's worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Best.......2002-04-21

I always had a certain type of taste in music as I experimented the joys of my art work. I felt that it was helping me keep a casual work pace, and I was never tired to hear it more than once. It's has a different unique style. This group first came to me broadcasted from a non-commercial station, KCRW 89.9 FM, a community service of Santa Monica College. Members of the station and numerous subscribers provide KCRW to be the first largest single source of financial support. It's a station that might appeal to people that have the same taste music as they do for this album. There's only one thing left for me to say about telepopmusik, I love it!

3 out of 5 stars Fun, decorative, entertaining........2002-03-08

The album's first single (and track) hooked me and thrilled me from the moment I heard it on the radio but after listening to the whole album, I was rather disappointed. Nothing on it equals the single even though it features quite a few nice moments. The band goes from one style to another so it's very hard to really get hooked throughout the album, from one end to the other. Listening to 'Genetic World' reminded me of Bran Van 3000's work. For fans of funky, varied and decorative alternative music.

5 out of 5 stars breathe a breath of fresh air.......2001-10-10

well, what to say. i have listened to this album which is not yet released in the USA and it is great. while the album does run a pretty serious gamut of styles I guess that is why it is so fresh, new and entertaining. I have actually been listening to it for months now and it keeps me interested from the slightly pop sound of some of the tracks to the almost hip hop elements that run through others which are all thrown together with a touch of the blues/jazz and a hint of rock. If for no other reason than the first track on this CD, you must buy it. I can't give away too much information about this album but the lead singer on most of the tracks is INCREDIBLE! Absolutely amazing. She has the most beautiful smokey yet clean voice reminiscent of a very famous deceased black LADY (hint, hint) singer who was famous for singing the blues. One listen and you will know. If not, well, you don't know music and you can skip this album entirely. Enjoy! I am buying this for everyone for Christmas.

I purchased a copy of Telepopmusik last summer while in Paris and was truly amazed. This album has become one of my all-time favorites and it will for you if you let it. Not a fan of ambient music, not that this necessarily is, I was amazed by the emotional journey I was taken on while listening to these beautiful beats.
Moving across a variety of genres this is a fabulous Cd for nearly every purpose, simply listening, driving, being with a loved one....

Buy it and you will see....

5 out of 5 stars What's Behind the other Door? .......2006-10-22

This wakes you up a little, just in case you were thinking you would be falling asleep to this album.
