Intelligent dance-oriented songs.......2004-11-06
Funky Green Dogs' third album "Super California" is great! They just get keep getting better & better! I love the hits "Rise Up" and "Burnin' Up" as well the rest of the album. Tamara's ocals are on point! Anyone who enjoys lyrically based dance-oriented songs should do themselves a favour and get this incredible album! You will not be disappointed!
Tamara Wallace - ... what a voice.......2003-05-29
Tamara Wallace has got a gorgeous voice. I put The Funky Green Dogs "Super California" CD in and just pressed play, a kick [butt] intro immediately gets your attention and as soon as her voice kicks in on DJ Asle's Radio Version of "You Got Me (Burnin' Up)", she commanded my attention, and she got it.
It's the kind of voice that no matter if you like the song or not, she stands out. It's evidenced on the above mentioned track and in "Remember" and "Free". I am very "ready for a new sensation" (from "Free"). She is one, and she's damn good.
And she is the main reason I listened to the Funky Green Dogs CD, as she makes them really worthwhile to listen to. Sometimes FGD drags their beats on a bit too much. Asle's "Burning Up" is an exception...it's a perfect length and pace and FGD could shorten their tunes to this length to keep things a little more bouncy, cause their beats are great as evidenced on some real energetic standouts songs of their showmanship; "Hesitation", the fun "Funny Feeling" and their version of "Burning Up" are examples. The title track "Super California" is another nice tune that comically captures the stereotypical L.A. scene, as Wallace sings (and purrs) about all of those trendy, superficial things such as "cell phones" and "silicon".
Me not being the biggest FGD fan, and if you were to ask me to pick one album from them to listen to, I'd recommend this one as overall, their beats really are good and Tamara's just wonderful!
Super California.......2002-09-19
For their previous album Star, Funky Green Dogs put audiences off a bit by releasing a big, brassy disco anthem ("Body") as the lead single. The first few tracks followed its footsteps, but much of the songs after that dived into darker, more intricate club grooves. On Super California, their third outing, the Dogs jump-start things with "You Got Me (Burning Up)". The single, full of disco-diva clichés and funky Latin rhythms that put an even greater spin into the already-dizzying production, is no exception to the slightly airheaded genius that "Body" was. Despite this, Super California is far from abrasive club fare. The arrangements are, in the group's trademark style, stripped down to their barest elements- usually sparse, yet hard-edged house rhythms, occasional synthesizer twinkles, and Tamara Wallace's muscled gospel vocals holding it all together. This paves the way for a somewhat organic sound, as shown in "Be A Part of My Life" and the Jesus-praising "Rise Up". These new environments, while clearly a nice experimental move for the Miami-based trio, may disappoint eager listeners hoping to find a bit more of Star's influence on this record. Nonetheless, Super California is a satisfying testimony to the Dogs' knack for creating hooky and edgy club anthems. It's certainly something to be burning up over (no pun intended).
If you like pulsing dance music-get this CD.......2002-05-10
This CD jams! The beats are deep, fast and pulsing and the singing sultry and urgent. The group is extremely tight and I have been playing this repeatedly. Actually, "You Got Me (Burnin' Up) which is on here twice is not the standout track. Better are "Free", "Hesitation" with its hypnotic, hiccuping beats, "Remember", the tough sounding "Pain" and the orgasmic title track. .... Get It!
Super California!.......2002-03-30
I love this CD by the Funky Green Dogs! I can't get enough of Tamara and her vocals! I got to tell you, if you don't own a funky green dogs CD, you got to own this one! Burnin' Up is my favorite and their are still 6 more that I can't seem to stop playing! Review this CD and tell me I'm wrong! I dare you!

Two guitarists playing beautifully together........2001-02-16
My first musical love was piano so I came to discover Earl Klugh via his collaborations with Bob James. This recording was a slow burn for me. Two acoustic guitarists playing together without, if I remember correctly, any back-up musicians - it took awhile for the quality to sink in. The music is beautifully played and makes for great background music for a romantic evening, or when you just want something sweet to pass the time.
