The first instrument you notice upon listening to Something About Airplanes is the cello on "Bend to Squares." It fades out, soon enough replaced by the familiar electric guitar, but it sets this album's offbeat mood. Experimentation and pop hooks strike a perfect balance on this debut from the Bellingham, Washington-based Death Cab for Cutie. The quartet follow in the fine tradition of area emo-pop bands like Modest Mouse, 764-HERO, and Built to Spill, but it's hard not to notice bits of Quasi and the Beatles popping up. Of course, the Death Cab formula is a bit different--"President of What?" is driven by Farfisa, not Fender; "Champagne from a Paper Cup" is a slow-burner--there's not much pop glee found in a song that begins "I think I'm Drunk Enough to Drive You Home Now"; and--every once in a while--the oddball vocal sample kicks in (presumably from a long-forgotten movie, a la vintage Jawbreaker). It all makes for a brilliant debut and a fine addition to the canon of Northwest emo-pop late-'90s style. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

It's no exaggeration to say 'Something About Airplanes' is the future of music. Melodic pop that falls somewhere between American Analog Set & Imperial Teen. Elsinor/Barsuk.

4 out of 5 stars I need more Death Cab!!!.......2006-06-17

What a joy it is to be turned on or to discover music from an artist you're hearing for the first time. I literally stumbled onto Death Cab For Cutie, just passing time in an FYE. I picked up "Something About Airplanes" and thought I'd give a random listen. Needless to say, the incredible melodies, and compelling lyrical content immediately got me open. DCFC bears a strong resemblance to another favorite band of mine, Built To Spill. Lead singer Ben Gibbard's delivery is almost dead on for BTS's Doug Martsch's wailing, melancholy tone. That's a good thing to me, as the same things that drew me in to BTS also seemed to have me ready to expand the Death Cab collection to include their other releases. But S.A.A is a great place to start if you're new to this band like me, "Bend To Squares", "Champagne From A Paper Cup", and "Amputations" are all perfect examples of indy rock done right. The titles of the songs are something else. (The Face That Launched 1000 S****??) I've heard from a lot of DCFC fans who say that this isn't even close to their best album. (Plans was mentioned a lot) If that's the case, my pockets might be in real trouble. Looking forward to the next time they're in Philly!

5 out of 5 stars Overall review of Death Cab For Cutie.......2006-04-24

This style of music is what I have been looking for my entire life, I just haven't known. This band has brought something to the table that I really enjoy. The very first sample I heard of Ben Gibbard was, "Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in". That barely audible tune that I heard while off the coast of Africa is what set it off. I searched and searched and now have almost all of their CDs. I Love Plans, it's an amazing CD. Translantisicm trails it, but not by much. I am now listening to Something About Airplanes. I take each CD one at a time. I will listen to only one CD, over and over until I am familiar with all of the tracks, it is then that I decide on what I think about the CD, I sort of invest time into each CD. I'm still working on "Airplanes". It has it's ups and downs, while the other two I mentioned are constant ups. Of course all reviews are opinions, so give all of Death Cab's albums a try to see what you think. I look forward finishing "Airplanes" and starting with the next.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product!.......2005-10-05

If you like Death Cab, you'll love this CD! It is a good reference to before Death Cab somewhat sold out. I'd reccomend this to anyone!

2 out of 5 stars this has nothing to do with airplanes.......2005-08-29

This C.D. is probably the best constructed of Death Cab For Cutie's albums in my opinion, for it has the most variety and has more complex rock than on some of its other more soft releases. Its lyrics aren't quite as well articulated as those on the album "Transatlanticism", but it's hard to remember that while paying attention to the catchy rhythms and sound effects that transpire in nearly every featured song. Styles range from long mystic tunes like "Line of Best Fit" to fairly energetic ones like the one I'd recommend most: "President of What". This track has good lyrics and rhythms, as well as a unique guitar progression that is rather catchy. Besides this song, most of the songs have a rippling guitar effect or some sort of technological jest to go with the music. Negative sides of the album are that the C.D. has nothing to do with airplanes, it has unrequired language in some instances, and does not have loads and loads of interesting melodies. Still, some tracks are likeable and if nothing else admirable for there uniqueness in comparison to the other featured songs. I would not suggest the purchase of this album, but overall it isn't horribly bad.
I recommend:
President of What?
Champagne From A Paper Cup

5 out of 5 stars Favorite DCFC album.......2005-05-31

When you listen to a cd, why do you listen to it? Simply because it sounds cool, or you enjoy how it relaxes you, or it fits a certain atmosphere? If that's how you listen to cd's, don't bother getting this album. I wouldn't want you to. This album is best enjoyed by those who listen to something because they get the feeling inside of it. I don't know why so many people here call this album pop and lighthearted. I completely disagree. The lyrics are not particularly dark, as opposed to maybe, lyrics from Alice in Chains' "Dirt", but they aren't exactly happy either. I absolutely love them. "Sleep Spent" is a great song. There is a lot more to this album than everyone seems to let on. The key to DCFC's music is that it takes a lot of listening before you actually get it, and the emotional value begins to sink in. I have been listening for three years, and just in the last six months or so, has the meaning of their music, the emotion behind it, the depression, sadness, and confusion finally begin to show themselves through the tone of Ben's voice and the guitar riffs. I'm not suggesting this is a depressing album, in fact it's rather comforting. Most of their albums are.

5 out of 5 stars Carved in stone.......2007-07-07

When Princess Diana was killed in that 1997 car accident, the world all but went into convulsions. I have to say it; I was adamantly NOT one of them. But Elton John was close to her (and to Gianni Versace - the infamous video of Elton and Diana at Verscse's memorial service), and his grief carried into this moment. He was so swept up in the time that he recast "Candle In The Wind," one of his strongest melodies, as a tribute and even rewrote the lyric. The result became a number-one song all over the world, and the all-time greatest selling single. That makes it, as a tribute, a monumental achievement.

By that measure, this is certainly a classic. The original A-side, "Something In The Way You Look Tonight," is one of the better songs from the otherwise lackluster "Big Picture." Since this single is the only place that "Candle In The Wind '97" is available (he has yet to insert it on any hits collections), its singularity makes this a keeper.

What can you say? An amazing Princess. An amazing Singer. Only Elton could give the ultimate tribute to his friend.

5 out of 5 stars Good new version.......2005-03-13

This is Elton John, one of the best classic rock piano players of all time in my opinion. The 1997 version of "Candle in the Wind" is a piano solo, which puts people in the mood for moments of relaxation. "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" is another Elton John classic that is very pretty and happy as well. Elton refuses to have "Candle in the Wind 1997" put on any other disc nor to ever sing it's lyrics again so all who want this selection legally must buy it and give the proceeds to the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. Although I prefer the old version of "Candle in the Wind" this version is worth every penny.

Emocore, an especially melodic and angst-driven form of punk that emerged from Washington, D.C., in the mid to late '80s, is making a major comeback. So much so that it wouldn't be surprising to see the producers of Sesame Street release Emo with Elmo, featuring Grover, Kermit, and especially Oscar the Grouch covering songs by Embrace, Rites of Spring, and Soulside. Which brings us to the Get Up Kids, whose second album, Something to Write Home About, is nearly as engaging as one of those old Sesame sketches featuring sock-puppet Martians and a ringing telephone. Sonically the band combines ragged Superchunk-style vocals with buzzing, hook-filled guitars and chiming, new-wave keyboards. Lyrically, however, the Get Up Kids are pretty down, lamenting damaged relationships with lines like, "I'm seeing much clearer now / You're just a face that I've gotten over" ("Red Letter Day") and "It's like you're falling in love while I'm just falling apart" ("10 Minutes"). But however angry or dejected they might be, the Get Up Kids find something worth celebrating. Whether it's the energy of last night's heated argument or the bittersweet relief of severing ties, Something to Write Home About is all about getting up and moving on. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I liked this CD.......2006-05-06

Well the band might have broken up, but this CD is good. Just to give the reader an idea, I like this album a lot more than the other releases that they have made. I give this album a four, because there are two songs that have kinda like the same background music to them only with different arrangements, but same chords. Other than that the cd is great. If you like emo, with guitar and keyboard sounds, you will like this CD. It is soft not so PuNKISH, but great!

Also if you happen to like this CD, you will like "The Get Up Kids" X-Keyboard player's Album, "Songs Not to Get Married To", by Reggie and the Full Effect.

5 out of 5 stars Quality.......2006-01-31

I can't exactly remember when or where i first got my hands on this cd, but it has become one of my treasured cd's. Most of the songs are upbeat with catchy guitars and synth/piano (actually all the elements of the songs are). The songs run together nicely and blend so well that i would recommend listening to this album from start to finish everytime. The lyrics are clever, well written, and stick in your head (for all the right reasons). There is often a play on words in the lyrics and it kind of keeps you listening and thinking about them. I realy have nothing bad to say about this album. even from a technical view point it is solid...not overdone...good mixing. I would recommend this cd to anyone into this kind of music and if you like any other get up kids material this is a must have. possibly the high point (in my opinion) of their career. R.I.P. amazing last show in philly.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-01-25

This is their best album by far. Their new stuff is just so repetitive. Their originality truely shines in this album with almost every on it reflecting some of the best songs created in this genre. Highlights include: "Long Goodnight", "I'll Catch You", and "My Apology".

5 out of 5 stars I may not be popular for liking this but I do.......2006-01-13

I know there's people out there who think it's blasphemy to rock to like this, but honestly I enjoy it. Time after time passing, it's an album that I cherish, maybe it's the sentimentality of good times that I miss so much or maybe it's just good music to me, but I enjoy it I really do. From the first track out of the gates thing are rockin' heavy with melody then you groove into the second track and catch on to a few memorable moments. Then on the third you're heart breaks only to be lifted back up ever so slightly and just leave you wondering what's this band capable next. I really love "I'm a loner Dottie, A Rebel" completely a great song. I can't think of more to say, but it could be I listened to this heavily at a very impressionable age.

1 out of 5 stars oh yeah.......2005-05-29

This album is so bad it will give you something to write home about. Its like that really crappy summer camp you went to and the first chance you got you wrote your parents an angry letter for what they made you go through. Dear mom the food sucks , the camp councelors are a-holes and there's no hot water!! I hate you mom!! thats the same kinda feeling you will get after listneing to this whiny mess.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars A smooth voice in a smooth repertoire........2004-04-04

Cesare Siepi's bass voice is greatly underrepresented in the CD catalogue. This album lets us know what an artist he was. His interpretations are always just right, and never over the top. Only an occasional accent slips in. His English diction should be a model for all singers. I lost no more than 5% of the words. The wonderful way he caresses his way into "Night and Day" or sails through "Begin the Beguine" are wonderful examples of his artistry. Siepi includes the often omitted verses to each song, and that is a plus.

The sound quality is more than acceptable. It isn't digital, but here the fidelity comes from the artistry and not the sound itself. In fact the sound quality is a lot better than the 1955 recording date might indicate. I was not bothered in the least ... in fact I was pleasantly surprised.

There are unfortunately lots of typos in the notes that should have been corrected. Myto should review such things before putting them out on the market.

Siepi's way with the Italian songs is equally enjoyable. How nice to have someone sing them instead of bawling them to the rafters. This is a winner album, and it would be 5 stars if the sound were a little more modern.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful collection of songs performed by great artist.......1999-05-24

Despite the inferior sound quality of this CD, it is pleasing to have this unusual collection available. Cesare Siepi is a great artist, with the best English diction of any classical Italian singer within memory. Although I remember him best as the most dashing and truly seductive Don Giovanni at the Met, he is equally convincing with a popular song. A rare achievement! Siepi, I love you as much today as I did when I was an infatuated teenager.

3 out of 5 stars Ethel Deserved Better Than This.......2001-06-22

There may indeed be no business like show business. RCA was a major backer of this musical, and fully expected to record the original cast album. Decca, Merman's recording label, wouldn't allow her to appear. The solution the two compnaies decided on was an original cast album on RCA featuring Dinah Shore doing Merman's numbers, and this mediocre studio album.

Decca was never a winner when it came to modern recording techniques. Merman's voice has no echo or reverb to enhance her performance. The arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, which fit Ethel's style like it was a dress bought in a bargain basement. It is a shame that in the later years of her life, Ethel didn't choose to revisit this score and re-record it, as she did with Annie Get Your Gun twice.

The selections from Panama Hattie are a nice rarity, but they are taken from scratchy shellac originals. There are several compilations that include these numbers with no annoying extraneous noise.

Great Jazz/Easy Listening CD with some popular standards performed in a fresh way. Pamela Luss' voice is top notch and the backing band is very, very good. Favorites include 'At Long Last Love' and 'Georgia on My Mind,' a really nice version of a song that has been done by millions of others! I highly recommend this CD!

She has a smooth and passionate voice. I highly recommend this album! Makes a great gift too because most of the songs are well-known and it appeals to most any age group! She has arranged these familiar songs in a really unique way. One of my favorite songs is There's Something About You I Don't Know.

5 out of 5 stars Ouch.......2006-11-11

You sure these guys aren't from the coal states, like PA, cuz they sure are mining the rock. Jump up and get down, real rock still exists somewhere, and it's on the River.

4 out of 5 stars Slit My Wrists and Eyes Wide Open.......2006-01-25

All aboard! The Riverboat Gamblers are about to begin the trip downriver. This full length album "Something to Crow About," will rattle your bones as Reverend Mike rocks the band's gospel through spit and electricity. Such songs like "Hey, Hey, Hey," and "Oh Yeah," will leave you fully cleansed of your sins and you spin this album over and over again in your headphones.
This album should be checked out for any curiousity "buzzing" around the gamma and is a must for any cock fighters on the scene. For more information about the band check out there lot on Myspace as well as going to theriverboatgamblers.com.

5 out of 5 stars Hey! Hey! Hey!.......2005-12-05

the riverboat gamblers are awesome. they bring some much energy into their punk rock n roll type sound. every song is short, in your face and awesome. with lyrics like "your suicide note is plagerism" you know these guys are having fun which is what music should be about

5 out of 5 stars Grab yer bucket of chicken and throw on this record!.......2005-06-09

One of my favorite releases and favorite live bands of 2003, the 'Gamblers came to Sacramento and made me an automatic fan. I had no expectations and left in awe! For anyone who's seen the band live, you know how crazy their live shows are. The lead singer Mike is jumping around the room, balancing on the back of chairs, barely keeping his balance on shakey amps, spinning the mic around on the end of the cord, which nearly hits several members of the audience including myself. (At the end of 2003, he ends up hitting bassist Pat in San Francisco in the mouth, leadng to a later benefit show in Sacramento to pay the massive medical bills.) Talking to Mike off-stage is like talking to a totally different persona than the one on-stage. Mild manored, soft spoken and very considerate. When talking to him after Pat's accident, (they ended up playing Sacramento the next night with out Pat and cancelling the remander of their tour), he expressed how bad he felt, and showed sincere regret.
Someone calculated how much the 'Gambers have gotten hurt on tour, and they have an amazing record. Something like 30-50%.
[To see an after picture of Mike's maddness, take a look at the Riverboat Gamblers/Electric Eel Shock Split Picture Disc 7inch.]

I've seen them three times and managed to walk away un-harmed, and my favorite songs ringing in my head. You can't go wrong with "What's What", "Ice Water", "OOh Yeah" or "Dead From the Neck Up."

5 out of 5 stars THE RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS HIT THE JACKPOT!!.......2005-01-11

Unlike most punk records, this one didn't take a few listens to grow on me- it sucked me in immediately and didn't exhale until the last little outro ditty. Without question, the Gamblers have put together one of the best punk rock records to come along in recent years... it's straight-ahead, balls-out rock from beginning to end- with tons of hooks, occasionally conjuring up the spirits of old school punkers like the Ramones and Misfits. I usually don't waste my time writing reviews, but this one is worth it. Do yourself a favor: buy the record and prepare to be blown away!

I first heard Michael O'Brien on TBN singing "One and Only" to an all female audience at a woman's conference. I haven't heard a voice like this in a long while. The words and the tune were orignal and fascinating to hear. So many songs today are copies of other songs. This is unique. The song kept going around in my head until I found it and could listen to it over and over. The other songs on the Album are great too. Michael O'Brien is a superb composer, musician, and vocalist. Once you hear the CD, "Something About Us", you will want more of his musical style and voice.
