If Sandler had shelved about half the material on this bloated 75-minute disc, he would have done the listener a big favor. At times, the relentless, one-note routines actually work. Sandler gets plenty of mileage out of fart after fart on "The Hypnotist." And every time the wise guys on "Respect" mumble that word, the funnier it gets. But too many skits go on forever. Lacking dramatic shape, they just hammer away at worn-out riffs. The five "Excited Southerner" tracks could certainly have been dumped. Sandler and his cowriters apparently think that the excited Southerner's stutter is enough to make these bits funny. Besides the dozen-plus comic routines, the disc contains seven songs, five of which feature full-blown musical productions and L.A. studio musicians. The standout number is "The Chanukah Song," one of two live recordings that feature a solo Sandler accompanying himself on guitar. --Fred Cisterna

sandler hits again.......2007-01-12
this is probably one of my favorites out of his CD's I was laughing to the end
Funny.......2006-12-17
This is a great CD, yes there is some matrial here that rambles on, and some un-funny bits, but the other bits make up for it. To the reviewer that thinks this is sick and recommends Woody Allen, hmmm...Whats sicker, Sandler humor, or the fact that Woody married Soon Yi, the adopted daughter of his former girlfriend???
adam sandler [sick].......2006-11-08
Do you think jokes about a mom making her sons masticate by the pool is funnY? No, I dont either!! But this is all my friends play!! For humor I prefer Woody Allen!1 Go seee Scoop with Scarlett!!!
Even funnier than They're All Gonna Laugh At You.......2006-03-02
The Goat is one of the funniest skits I have ever heard and no matter how many times I hear it, it leaves me in tears of laughter. Also of note on the Album: "Mr. Bake-O" "Steve Polycronopolous" "What the Hell Happened To Me"
NOW I'M ONLY HAPPY WHEN I WATCH GIRLS PEE...........2005-10-15
I may have said that his first album was the best. Well the first album was pretty god damned funny, but this thing is sheer comic BRILLIANCE! The skits AND the songs, all good. Except for the brutally un-funny THE HYPNOTIST skit (sorry Kevin Nealon, I couldn't handle the seven minutes of farts.) But everything else is incredible! The songs are SO cool. I actually saw him with his band in 1996. I was thirteen and I had a blast. I would go see him again, but now he's to busy making movies like SPANGLISH!
THE CULT, RESPECT, DO IT FOR MAMMA, THE GOAT, SEX AND WEIGHTLIFTING are the ones that instantly come to mind... "we are definatley f'ing..., there are no weights or dumbells in this room...just my balls, ssssh baby my mom will hear."
"OWE! F me in the goat A!"
"So after lunch why don't you go out back and play with your Cawkinballs?"...."MAAAAAA!"
"GOTTA RESPECT THE CONDOM"...."You F'in moron! RESPECT THE CONDOM, he's F'in five years old!"
And more great stuff like that. By the way there is a parental advisory on this one in case you were wondering.

I had this when it was on cassette it is still just a s funny now as it was then. good buy
Funny Funny Funny.......2006-06-29
This is one of the best comedy albums of all time. I must have listened to this at least 100 times. It has CLASSIC CLASSIC stuff like Tool Booth Willie, The Baffoon skits, the beatings of teachers....its just aweome. And of course...who could forget that it had LUNCHLADY LAND on it! Its worth buying the album just for that one song.
They're All Gonna Want Their Money Back.......2006-03-31
Fortunately, I got this so-called "comedy" album used, so I
can't complain to much about the rip-off. Who is Sandler trying
to amuse here? As an adult, I found this series of bits to
be pointless and more offensive than funny. Also, should anyone
under 16 be listening to this nonsense? I like Sandler in
most of his movies and on SNL. By trying for shock comedy,
I think he loses a lot of his likability. Some say this is
Sandler's funniest album. I'm not sure I want to ever meet
such a person.
I can't stop laughing.......2006-03-02
Adam Sandler is one of the funniest men to ever live!!!
I'm Coming Out of the Boooooth.......2005-11-02
Adam Sandler was the best reason to watch Saturday Night Live for me in the post-Dana Carvey era. The best was whenever he'd show up at the Weekend Update desk to sing his silly little songs. Then I was introduced to his first comedy album, ironically at church camp. Sandler's They're All Gonna Laugh at You had us on the floor all weekend and is still good for a laugh today.
The album starts off modest enough with Assistant Principal's Big Day as the namesake in the title making some new rules as regulating smoking. Of course this takes a turn for the worse as me matter of factly orders the girls shower into his office which then disturbingly includes the men's gymnastics team. And the album rarely slows down from there and really earns his Parental Advisory sticker as if any good parent would let his or her child listen to this.
Next we are introduced to the Buffoon who shows up multiple times throughout the album as he makes outrageous statements like telling his Dean of Admissions, played by Conan O'Brien, "I bet you got really hairy (expletive deleted)," only for the person he's talking to, such as the Valedictorian, respond to the Buffoon in almost scientifically. The best of the Buffoon's statement was when he told his girlfriend, "My dog has a four inch (expletive deleted)."
Another theme on the album is the severe beating of various high school employees such as the janitor, bus driver, science teacher, and Spanish teacher. These all got multiple spins when I was in high school in particular the Spanish teacher because, even though I too French, it was nice to see a foreign language teacher be taking down and try to get out of her beating by saying things such as "Me casa, su casa." And to this day, I still sing "Mop, mop, mop, all day long..." whenever I clean stuff.
There are a couple of missteps on the album as I find nothing funny in a dude taking a monster piss and the mother repeating the album title repeatedly during Oh Mom... get tired quickly. And hearing the dial tone go on forever during Mr. Spindel's Phone Call gets annoying. But none of these skits drag down the album too much.
The best parts of the album are the songs. There was the previously mentioned Thanksgiving Song was originally conceived for SNL. There's also Lunchlady Land that was brought to life hysterically by Chris Farley. But the best of the best would have to be At a Medium Pace that starts out as a cheesy Michael Bolton type love song with lyrics like "Put your arms around me baby, can't you see I need you so." But that quickly changes as he order's his lover to "Spit on your hand and stroke my (expletive deleted) at a medium pace. This build up to a crescendo until he again requests "Now pull up my (expletive deleted) and take the shampoo bottle out of my (expletive deleted)." If you ever want some extra hilarity, perform the song yourself as if you were reading from a Shakespearian play.
To this day, the album is still very quote worthy as I still say "You suck" like it was performed in The Cheerleader and still look for appropriate times to say "I'm coming out of the booooooth." And whenever I play with drunken idiots I always pull out, "Look at my hand, it's moving, but it's not moving." Sandler also brought in an all-star voice talent to help him out. Aside from O'Brien, there are other SNL alums such as Rob Schneider, David Spade, Tim Meadows, and Robert Smigel.

another classic firesign theatre.......2007-07-09
If you are not familiar with these guys, they are a irrational comedy group that played on the radio in the late sixties(?) Therefore they lend themselves well to audio cd. You got to imagine these guys were smoking the good stuff when they wrote these albums. It takes a little concentration to catch all that is going on, but it absolutley hilarious and well written and performed. If you like this one, order the others...have an adult beverage or two or whatever and temporarily enter the world of firesign theatre. You'll want to share with your friends.
Masters of Their Universal Whatchamacallit !.......2007-04-25
Dear Friends, in the long time ago a quad of superior beings from the Dogstar left their humor, in the form of
insight, funny names, scatological jokes and drug references on vinyl in an abandoned auto in East LA. This is
not that collection.
This is a magical journey through American history, F Scott Fitzgerald, Jack Poetland and Raymond Chandler-
on acid. It is addictive, it is tobacco, it is powerful comedy that will infest your dreams, your speech patterns
and make your common-law family members consider you "weird!".
Beware but taste the rapture. This is Book 2, Sides 3 & 4 of the Book of Firesign-CONSUME !
I like this record as much as my dad did........2007-02-03
When I was a child, my father and his brother used to listen to this record all the time. I thought it was sort of amusing then, but he insisted that it would be much funnier when I got older, and that it got funnier to him every time he heard it.
I didn't understand that logic then. I get it now.
On the surface, "How Can You Be Two Places At Once" is genuinely funny comedy, but with every additional listen, it actually gets funnier. Their are subtle jokes laced within jokes throughout the record, my favorite of which is a pizza order attempt in one skit that is tied into the Nick Danger piece later on.
Also, "The Further Adventures of Nick Danger," the longest installment of this character on record, is over 12 minutes of absolute rediculousness, in the best possible way.
Although some bits are less funny for those such as myself, who weren't alive when it was recorded, it is an excellent buy. I recommend it.
Clever and intellegent........2006-07-17
This is one of the group's best efforts. The Nick Danger Skit IMHO is a classic. Also is Ralph's Spoiled Sport Motors.
Orgin of the high test sales pitch.......2006-02-19
Firesign Theatre makes you believe that "zany" is the color of modern life. This album is a brilliant and funny mix of overlapping realities (much like life). I heard it 30 years ago and it's just as bizarre and entertaining today.

Andy Griffith Can Split Your Sides With Laughter.......2007-05-08
Andy has his own way of making people laugh and his wonderful down-home southern heritage doesn't hurt matters either...definitely worth listening to.
Original Andy Griffite.......2007-01-18
I still remember listening to "What It Was Was Football" and "Romeo and Juliet" with my Mom, in the 50's, when Andy was a newcomer to radio. How we laughed our fool heads off! Some of his phrases, like "...big aahranj draank..." and "...I'm rat cheer..." became part of our family vernacular, and still are.
I love it!
Down Home With Andy.......2007-01-11
We watched Andy when he first began to guest on various TV shows and thoroughly enjoyed his routines. Due to the fact that his body language and facial expressions were a large part of his humor we had to recall that aspect but listening to the CD made us laugh all over again.
Andy Griffith.......2007-01-11
I bought this for my father, who was a fan of Andy's back in the day. He really seemed to like this CD, since it brought back a lot of memories for him.

Classic all the way.......2007-05-29
This is a classic collection of clever humor, full of nuggets my family has loved for years. Brooks works fast, and Reiner is a classic straight man. The best parts are where they're obviously cracking each other up. You can tell that the recording had a lot of editing, but it works. Considering some of the subject matter, they really did a great job of keeping it clean. Great stuff.
The 2000 year old man.......2005-10-06
I thought it was great. I had just seen the musical 'The Producers' while in London so decided to get the full set plus two others. Hilarious. I do get funny looks from car drivers when while waiting for the lights to change I am laughing my head off. This is my sense of humour. Thanks for your great service.
Impovised comedy at it's best.......2005-09-02
Before Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein) and Carl Reiner (The Man With Two Brains, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid) had established themselves as successful comedy directors they were writers for The Sid Caesar show. "The 2000 Year Old Man" was created during breaks in writers meetings where the two would entertain the others by imrovising a questions and answers scenario. Brooks played a man who has been alive for the past 2000 years and Reiner his interviewer. We get to hear the real stories about Jesus Christ, Joan of Arc, Robin Hood as well as tips on how to live longer (who better to tell you than a 2000 year old man!) and snapshots of coffee house life, movie directors, artists and lots more. Brooks is truly gifted at thinking on his feet despite Reiner occasionally trying to trip him up when he contradicts himself or backs himself into a comedic corner. The playfulness between them as they try to make each other laugh is a joy to the ears and it's great to hear a comedy duo that has aged so very well alongside so many of their dated peers. This four CD box set contains almost all of the recorded material available of this outstanding example of comedy improvisation and an accompanying booklet provides ample background information and interviews.
Classic Comedy Gems (for the most part)........2005-02-18
THE COMPLETE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN is a collection of 4 different comedy albums featuring the improvised works of Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks. The albums included with the set are: "2000 Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks", "2000 And One Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks", "Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks At the Cannes Film Festival", and "Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks: 2000 And Thirteen".
"2000 Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks" is one of the greatest comedy albums of all time. It was pure genius in its day and the comic spark heard on the album remains just as funny today as it probably did when it was firs released.
"2000 And One Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks" is my favorite album out of the set. The 2000-Year-Old Man makes a return appearance on the album, but I find the "Two Hour Old Baby" sketch and "Psychiatric Society" to be more hilarious. "Watch the eyes."
"Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks At The Cannes Film Festival" is my least favorite album in the bunch. Maybe its because the album was taped in Europe, I don't know, but the sketches here are just not as funny as the ones on the other albums.
"Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks: 2000 And Thirteen" brings back the 2000-Year-Old Man after nearly a decade of absence. The entire sketch is one long interview between the Reporter (Reiner) and the 2000-Year-Old-Man. I kind of wish there were some other sketches here, but there's enough hilarity to keep one interested.
The set includes a booklet that explains how the 2000-Year-Old Man came to be and the transcript of and interview between Saul Kahan and Reiner and Brooks. What's so fascinating about this whole collection is that none of it was rehearsed (except for parts of 2000 & 13 because Brooks was so scared to do the character again). The 2000-Year-Old Man was born out of improv. Reiner and Brooks make a great comic duo and have gone on to become some of the most powerful people in show business. This set of albums is a wonderful tribute to the character that made their careers.
Peps you up inside, keeps you going till supper..........2004-07-15
Mel Brooks is one of those things that makes life worth living, and this is him at his best. And that Carl Reiner ain't half bad, neither. A bargain at any price.

Martin's got the audience in the palm of his hand on this mid-'70s recording of a show at The Boarding House in San Francisco. The comedian and his crowd are on the same wavelength; everyone in the room seems to share a California post-hippie sense of absurdism. Occasionally punctuated by banjo playing, Martin's almost cocky performance somehow manages to ramble with a sense of purpose. He certainly doesn't have to worry about losing the crowd; every tossed-off remark and gesture is readily gobbled up. Some of Martin's material verges on the surreal, and not surprisingly, drug references abound. One subtext of the album is the tension between conventional show biz and the hipper brand of comedy that Martin saw himself as embodying. But the comic doesn't really play favorites: both alternative and mainstream culture are targets for his funny jabs. --Fred Cisterna
Customer Reviews:
Steve Martin's big break.......2007-04-09
This Grammy-winning record is where it all started for Steve Martin, at least in terms of national recognition in the US. It is a real comedy gem made by a comedian who wasn't famous yet (and who still had dark hair). It was a runaway sensation and brought new life to the genre of the comedy album, which had been in the doldrums for most of the 1970s. Sure, it is dated -- there are Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon jokes, and some of the materials about the sex scene in San Francisco seems awfully tame by today's standards. But this is one of the great comedy albums of all time, and should be in any collection of comedy recordings.
Absolutely brilliant.......2006-11-06
This was from the tour before THE WILD AND CRAZY GUY I assume, which I thought was the funniest comedy record ever. This one is I would say on an equal level. Some of the jokes have aged but the majority of the stuff is really really funny.
"Professional show business! Hey!".......2006-05-08
Too many of the reviews here are not judging this album on its own merits, but on everything they know about Steve Martin following the appearance of this album in 1977. The fact is that this album was so successful that it catapulted Steve Martin into the national spotlight, but before this album he was virtually unknown. At a time when most comedians were basing more and more of their humor on their capacity to get progressively vulgar, Martin brought forth a brand of humor that depended less on profanity than conceptual humor. He could get obscene as well, but because most of his act was "clean," the few times he would get bawdy had far more impact than with other major comedians.
I remember reading once that before turning to comedy Martin was in college a philosophy student, especially the linguistic philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Certainly Martin is more conceptual than any contemporary comedian (though Steven Wright has since developed a comparable conceptual approach, though his presentation is considerably different), delighting in toying with words, combining ideas that clash unexpectedly with one another. And although the humor was always completely planned, there was an almost stream of consciousness touch to his routine at times. It was almost he never ceased being a philosopher, almost engaging in a deconstruction of normal humor.
What I find amazing today is that this album, released in the hey day of the age of disco, seems as fresh today as it was when it first came out. Even if you've heard the stuff before, his changes of pace and shifts are perennially original and unexpected. He really was cutting edge, but pretty soon he made cutting edge popular. The album was such a success that he immediately began selling out arenas and coliseums and, of course, began his unprecedented run as guest host of SNL, where he pioneered a string of famous skits. The album was cutting edge, but it was also graced with an almost universal appeal.
Following this album he released an almost equally good one, A WILD AND CRAZY GUY. Unfortunately the next two were more formulaic and felt like efforts to cash in on his success. By then Martin's career as a stand up comedian was over. The other great stand up to emerge from the seventies, Robin Williams, has at gone back to stand up from time to time, but Martin has stuck with acting and writing. But his subsequent success in other fields shouldn't make us forget just how brilliant this debut album was.
Inspired me but dated.......2006-04-23
This cd (when it was an albumn) in the mid to late 70's inspired me and tons of other folks. I can remember talent shows where kids did these routines (some life, some to the record). Regardless this was great...this was funny. No Richard Pryor or more heady humor...it was off the wall stuff...that was perfect for the time.
As I hear it again, I find it a bit dated, but if you heard it then or never heard it...this is worth many listens...especially at this price!
The visual performance doesn't translate well to CD.......2006-01-06
I'm just now going back and getting all the stand-up material of great old comics who long since moved on to film, such as Martin, Allen and Murphy. Though he was a mostly ingenius stand-up comic, Steve Martin was already as absurd as any human being could follow along with. Now without the visual part of his act it gets really hard to keep up. With some of his songs, staged accidents, dropped guitars, and surreal drug metaphors, it's hard to tell what's happening with the aural experience alone. I'm trying to track down video to get the full experience.
A few of his songs weren't that funny, and there were a few uncalled for puns, but 90% of the time he's a killer comic here. If only I could follow the CD version of his act 100% of the time.

More coffee, warden?.......2007-05-13
If you have time for only one Firesign album before you die, make sure it's this one. A prescient, strangely psychedelic (no drugs involved) dissection of America & life in general that will leave you awake all night wondering about who or what's really in charge of this whole peculiar shebang anyway? But of course all their albums are like that. Must be those Canadian writers. The Firesign Theater is the closest thing America ever had to Monty Python, and we owe them a LOT for holding up an unflinching mirror to our loony culture.
functiional brain required.......2007-03-31
this is possibly the best comedy cd of all time. if one wishes to experience a delightful active mental journey as opposed to a more passive "the guy tells a joke and i listen to it" comedy club performance, this is the correct choice.
if you don't have the adventure gene in your body, you might find the performance to be scattered, difficult to follow, and more weird than funny.
one more thing. don't try to listen to this while driving. you will either miss the good stuff on the cd, or miss something important on the road. it would be a waste either way.
Hubba hubba George, what a suit!.......2006-08-28
Firesign Theater has been dismissed as a 60s relic, but listening to DCTD,HMTP repeatedly made me realize it's about the members' nostalgia for the pop culture of their childhood (the Henry Aldrich radio series, Archie comics, Korean War B-movies, etc.)rather than drugs and hippies. Little wonder that at the end of the second side, George Tirebiter reverts to a child running after an ice cream truck. It's also incredibly funny and compulsively quotable, their best sustained effort.
On a Scale of 1 to 5, This is a 27!.......2006-08-14
Being their third release, and the first three albums being their tightest work, Dwarf is often misunderstood. Disjointed snippets? Not in the slightest! Dwarf is the story of an aging George Leroy Tirebiter sitting in front of the television, flipping through the channels only to find each station is showing a story about different phases of his life (complete with commercials). I'm uncertain if George was about to die and this is how his life flashed before his eyes. Regardless, this fine piece of work is often quoted, including an apartment complex near a freeway in Indianapolis posting a sign stating, "If you lived here, you'd be home now." Some material has dated better than other, but still an album that bears repeated listening in order to "catch" half of the jokes, puns, and one-liners that are woven into the text of the album. Buy this album, it is a requirement of the (aptly named) Department of Redundancy Department.
Everything You Know Is Wrong.......2006-07-15
OK. For the uninitiated, apologies for the arcane Firesign reference in the title. As for Dwarf, this is a fabulous CD. It is funny. It is smart. It is subtle. It is stupid. It is arcane. It is endlessly self-referential. It is nonsense.
Here's the problem with translating Dwarf to 21st century sensibilities: nobody has the time to figure out a 45-minute comedy routine that requires repeated listening. And yes, it requires figuring out.
I love this material, as obviously dated as it is. But if you don't have the patience to go with it, if you're looking for easy laughs, it's probably not for you. If you loved it once and aren't sure if you're going to love it again, you might find it ages as well for you as Pixie Stix. (Gak.) But if you got below the surface the first time, or you're willing to spend time with it now, go for it. Go back and don't crush that dwarf one more time.
And just for the record, it would've been five stars--if only this weren't a CD. Part of the original joke was the vinyl medium.

Though this seminal British comedy team is better known for authority-tweaking absurdist wordplay and surrealist visual hijinks, music has always been an essential element in the troupe's twisted universe. Monty Python Sings collects 25 musical Python nuggets from the team's album catalogue, including such beloved ditties as "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," "Lumberjack Song," "I'm So Worried," "Spam Song," "Bruces' Philosophers' Song," "I Like Chinese," and "Knights of the Round Table." With so much Python music gathered in one place, it's impressive to note just how many of the sextet's musical excursions have become cult classics. --Scott Schinder

Quotable for ages.......2005-03-23
This CD contains the majority, albeit not all, of Monty Ptyhon's best known songs. Some of them come from the three great Python films - the Holy Grail, the Life of Brian and the Meaning of Life. Others are drawn predominantly from the Flying Circus comdey series. All of them display the absurdist comedy that the Monty Python troup were famous for with the talents of John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Graham Chapman all utilized in various ways. If you are a fan of Monty Python I would highly recommend purchasing this CD so you can appreciate their musical repetoire over and over again.
Ahhh...The sweet sound of insanity........2005-02-01
I was already a huge fan of the show when I purchased this back in college. This only cemented my obsession with Monty Python. I remember I got alot of strange looks and comments when I would play this in my dorm room! A cd that is alot of fun and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. These guys are nuts and I love them!!
What have you got to lose?.......2004-10-28
This is a collection of 25 of Monty Python's best known musical moments. This is funny stuff, but where is "They Won't Play This Song on the Radio"? Other than that little omission, I have no complaints about this CD. Recommended to Python fans.
Indulging the terpsicorean muse.......2004-05-06
This a record with something for everyone. Obviously first and foremost it's a convenient collection of Monty Python's best-known songs, many of which have become comedy classics. If you don't have any other Python in your collection, then this is a good place to start, with all the familiar songs from the films mingling with lesser-known items from the studio LPs.
But even if you're a fanatic who's already got all the "proper" Python albums, it's still worth getting this compilation as it's the only place you'll find the full-length "Medical Love Song" (previously featured on "Contractual Obligation Album", but only in a shortened form), a studio recording of Terry Gilliam singing "I've Got Two Legs" or the marvellous exclusive track "Oliver Cromwell" (sung hilariously badly by Cleese). Best of all, the version of "The Lumberjack Song" included here is actually the George Harrison-produced single version, which is (a) brilliant, and (b) pretty much impossible to find anywhere else.
In brief, then: an essential purchase for all Python lovers.
Monty Python Does it Again!!!!.......2003-11-16
This is by far the BEST damn Monty Python CD ever.
Eric Idle's "ALways Look on the Bright Side of Life" song is one of the song's I listen to when I'm feeling down.*****
Michael Palin's performance "The Lumberjack Song" was very well put togeather.*****

steve martin a Philosophical analysis.......2006-11-19
steve martin was the most important human being who ever lived. but this unfortunately ended in 1988. very quickly before i get into my long speech steve martin committed artistic suicide really after the michael caine movie in 1988. parenthood and after was the end. his genius was really in the 1970's. most of what he did was incredibly orignal and intense. this was a mixture of his early and later concerts although the later concerts were mostly older material but geared to a 10,000 seat audience which was more zany vs a earlier 500 seat or less audience which to me was more focused. this along with tv movies books interviews. his shows were i believe written and improvised but the material on both ends in the way he performed was so cutting and intelligent and quick that most of it was unbelivable. not to may people can really know how to think or act like this. he takes a lot of standard situations and makes them a twisted revelation. his voice his gesturing and phrasing is totally amazing unsurpassed. you really need the material in front of you to understand what im writing. if anything in this life i wish he would just put on the whitesuit (or any color) and the banjo and just do what he does best. it wasn't just comedy it was like a great jazz musician. Im sure he could do it and doesn't need to do huge venues. I do believe on the first three albums except for side two on the wild album it's all really from two boarding house performances in 1977 because the sound changes from a close mic sound then to a distant reverb echo sound it mixes from one to another. also some of the material is repeated but like a artist changes it around. you want a example of his genius listen to his phrasing in vegas. how is this material dated? this 2000 period is dated within itself
A good piece of the past........2006-04-23
For any who want to see Steve Martin at his rocketing beginnings (when some of us thought he would ONLY be a standup comic) this is a great companion piece to "Let's Get Small." Though that cd sounds like a club date, this has some material not used on that first cd, along with live "stadium" stuff that Martin did following the first cd.
I actually saw him opening night at the Universal Amphetheater, with opening band THE BLUES BROS. - whose "Briefcase Full of Blues" was recorded later that week at these string of shows.
Funny stuff here, some of it dated, but if you were a fan at the time, or if you never heard Martin stand up you will like this. "King Tut" is great and should never be forgotten...it is worth the price of this cd alone!
King Tut would crack-up.......2005-08-06
A true "snap shot" of a past era. Interesting to see the evolution of an artist and his art. I played "King Tut" (track #10) on the way to the exhibition at LACMA both funny and enlightening. Well excuuuuuuse meeeeee ese!
Does some good pickin' and a grinnin'!.......2005-01-13
Steve Martin has become a cultural staple in the comic community. With hysterical films and outlandish Saturday Night Live performances, it would be obvious that Martin would be a great choice to do a comic album. Well, in this film guys opinion, you are going to need to be a big fan of Martin to stomach this album. His humor is offbeat, never quite following a pattern or direction. Instead of actual jokes, he resorts to making noises on the album that I am sure are funny in person, but listening to it just comes off a failure. His "Cat Handcuffs" bit is humorous, but the rest becomes obvious that somebody was looking to cash in on Martin's popularity. I would have loved to see Steve Martin in concert during his younger days, I am sure that he would make me laugh my socks off, but it just doesn't translate well to day's style. I am sorry Steve, but I liked your other album better.
Grade: ** out of *****
Great.......2004-07-28
This was a GREAT college album. After seeing its ranking on Amazon, it sounds like it's still doing well. That is amazing.
Martin's humor was a great way to get through tense college days. He is in a world all of his own, but it is an interesting world, that's for sure.

Description
In the late 50's, all the talk was about the charismatic John Fitzgerald Kennedy and how inevitable it seemed that he'd be elected our next President...everyone knew a change was in the air and in 1960, we did elect JFK. After a stint in the Armed Forces and based in Germany, Vaughn Meader returned to the U.S. and in the early 60's, started performing a stand-up routine in night clubs. One evening, he tried something new, breaking into his now famous impression of the newly elected JFK...and his audience loved it. Soon, his eerie knack for capturing the pacing and timbre of Kennedy's distinct voice caught the eye of Bob Booker and Earle Doud and on October 22, 1962, they entered Fine Recording Studios in New York City and before a live audience, they recorded the legendary The First Family album. No one could have anticipated the overwhelming response to Meader's spot-on impression...the LP sold in excess of 300,000 copies in the first three weeks of release and over 7.5 million copies in the first few months. Meader appeared on high profile TV shows such as the Jack Paar hosted Tonight Show, What's My Line and The Ed Sullivan Show, filled nightclubs in Vegas and went back into the studios on March 18, 1963 to record a second volume of The First Family. On November 22, 1963, JFK was assassinated and inside of a week, not a single copy of the LP was to be found in record stores. People removed the albums from their collections in horror...and Vaughn Meader's career ended as quickly as it began. While he dabbled in music and comedy for years afterward, eventually returning to his actual name (Abbott Vaughn Meader), he could never match the success he enjoyed satirizing JFK. The action takes place in all the important and familiar places and with the people connected with The First Family...listening the these CD's will bring these events and people back to life.
Customer Reviews:
Funny 1st Family.......2007-07-16
I first heard this as a child on an LP when it came out in the early 60's.
Listening to it now brings back fond memories and even funnier moments with lines like the 1st Family and their report on using Crest toothpaste..or the 1st Lady's White House Tour.."and we kept it as it was originally"..including the President.
It also made me realize the importance of that particular 1st family on this nation..and how we rarely laugh about them due to their personal loss and heartache. Vaughn Meader was a genius ...proven by the The First Family!
First Family CD.......2007-05-12
This brought back memories of when I was a kid. I can not wait to take it out for my parents to hear.
Still Funny After All These Years.......2007-04-03
This is a classic! If you remember the Kennedy White House years, you'll love "The First Family." Vaughn Meader, Naomi Brossart, and the other cast voices are splendid, clearly capturing the charm and panache of the Kennedy characters with a brand of style and wit that no one else has ever come close to. What a treat to find this on CD! The technical quality of this reproduction is not what I had hoped for, but that's the only aspect that keeps this otherwise fine piece of memorabilia from earning at least 4 stars.
Love this album!.......2007-03-21
Even my 5 year old loves this album. He says "is this the rubber ducky one?" Timelessly funny across age groups, you don't have to be over 50 to get these jokes. My parents had this album and I am glad to add it to my collection.
Timeless Comedy.......2007-03-14
It's been over 50 years since the Kennedys have been in the White House but the humor in this album is priceless. From the message passing of The Malayan Ambassador to the hilarious business lunch with all the world leaders (Castro, Kruschev, Andenau, DeGaulle,), this album is packed with gut wrenching belly laughs. Vaughn Meader is so convincing as JFK and it is difficult to realize that he was not JFK himself. The comedy here is so good that it is timeless!
