1 out of 5 stars THIS SUCKS!!.......2006-08-01

You're led to believe that these are the full-length hits when you play them, but DONT BE FOOLED!! They are chopped up shortened versions of the original hits!! FAME by David Bowie has about 2 min taken out, and the great guitar riff at the end of the Lynard Skynard "Freebird" tune is chopped off at the end . .A RIP OFF!!!

4 out of 5 stars classic rock.......2006-03-18

I enjoyed the CD. Was dissapointed that the Hocus Pocus song Focus was an edited version and not the full song. Other that that it was great!

5 out of 5 stars Mr.personality.......2004-09-30

This is a very great cd. I love this cd it is my favorite cd of all time and it rocks. it has great songs on it like We will we will rock you and songs like it. This is they best cd in the world. it rocks out loud.

4 out of 5 stars Would have been 5+ if..........2001-08-23

Listening through I thought that this has got to be the best classic rock compilation that I have ever heard. Just about every tune belongs except "Joy To the World", which seems a little out of place. Why only 4 stars? Because they shortened my favorite song, FREEBIRD. If you listen, you'll notice that they took out a good chunk out of the guitar solos at the end. They should have kept the length and cut out JOY TO THE WORLD. If so, it would have been 5+++++++.

3 out of 5 stars Too Scattershot To Be Truly Representative.......2001-05-09

By calling this a "Classic Rock Party" one must interpret "rock" rather loosely. This collection includes pop ("Joy to the World"), folk-rock ("Sister Golden Hair"), and even a novelty song (the yodelling "Hocus Pocus") in addition to classic 70's rock--all of these songs were released between 1970 and 1978.

Rhino's other releases in their Millenium series usually focused on a specific genre. When you're doing a hip-hop, funk or doo wop collection, you can do an adequate job even though you may be covering a decade of music. When your category is as broad as classic rock (whatever that means), your song selection doesn't hold together very well.

These were all popular songs and all of them reached the Top 40, except "Aqualung," which was never released as a single. And why wasn't "Eighteen" or "School's Out" used in place of Alice Cooper's "No More Mr. Nice Guy"? As for some of the other song selections, Rhino appears to have simply decided to save some money on licensing fees by recycling songs from its Top Rock Hits series.

Overall, this is a very listenable collection with terrific sound and informative liner notes. But unless you specifically looking for some of these songs, why not simply tune in to your local classic rock radio station?

This is one of those records crafted purely to dance around to and have a great time with. "We're Going to Ibiza" has to be one of the catchiest dance-pop songs of the late '90s; luckily the rest of the Vengaboys' greatest-hits collection provides similarly hedonistic, gloriously vapid pleasures. The Vengaboys' sound is what might happen if one were to throw Ace of Base, Stardust, and Miami Sound Machine into a blender and press the Purée button. The group (two women and two men) may look like a Saturday morning Spice Girls-meets-the-Village People cartoon, but their sound is not quite as campy as they look; it's all about fun--nothing more, nothing less. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Euro Dance-Techno-Pop Album.......2005-10-29

Unlike some of the more recent entries, I didn't start listening due to commercials, but when I was living in Portugal and heard the songs played to pretty much unanimous appeal at the discotecques. 'We Like to Party' & 'Up and Down' (and the remixes) we're constants in the very last of the 90's. The latter song had it's own dance done by everyone in the clubs. I picked the album up when it dropped that year and continue to follow the Vengaboys. So for me, part of it is the memories, but alot of it is you can still not be sad and not stand still when you put on these tracks. It you like consistent sounding albums and you like upbeat, fun songs with dance beats, then I recommend you pick up this album.

3 out of 5 stars Completely Unpretentious and Positively FUN.......2005-09-16

Okay, I admit it: I got sucked in by that Six Flags commercial too. Glad that I did! There's no deep, dark, hidden messages in songs like 'Boom Boom Boom' and 'We Like to Party' - just happy bouncey beats. If you like techno, dance or Europop you need to add this to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2005-08-18

I really enjoyed it and it was very nice to have to CD since i do work at a SIX FLAGS and when ever some on askes me about the song I know what Im talking about. It has fun music and will make you in a good mood.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome party music!.......2003-11-16

Let me tell you...I work in a very diverse office building....a place where everyone likes their own music and not yours. I popped this CD in my disc drive one Saturday morning and people from nearby departments were dancing and singing along with the music! Everyone came together and had such a great time...they recognized the song from the first couple of beats and we danced and sang along....then I popped in Rhino Instant Party Mix - Extra Strength....and WOW....it was more of a party than work. Someone pass the chips and dip! Great CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Selection!.......2000-02-03

I bought both this CD and the Extra Strength CD and played them at one of my DJ gigs and they were both a huge success. Could have gotten away with playing them from beginning to end since there is a great variety. I recommend this CD to all!

This 16-track compilation demonstrates a sense of humor--or an awareness of its own cheese factor--by sandwiching "Lambada" between the Gipsy Kings' "Bamboleo" and the Bayside Boys remix of Los Del Rio's "Macarena." The spirit of fun keeps this otherwise hopelessly diffuse set from falling apart while dancing between the flamenco guitars of Carlinhos Brown's "A Namorada," a house remix of "Oye Como Va," and Quincy Jones's Austin Powers fave "Soul Bossa Nova." Those willing to let go will have hit the dance floor long before Beck ends the bash with "Burro," his suavecito mariachi version of "Jack-Ass." --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good spread of popular Latin songs.......2005-09-01

If you're one of those Latin song buffs, you might want to check this album out. It has a wide spread of Latin songs ranging from "La Bamba" to "Mas Que Nada". A good mix of ever popular songs and forgotten one.

4 out of 5 stars First Nine Songs Are Cool, Rest Are Boring.......2003-07-31

I'm pretty happy with this CD. I think the first nine songs are pretty cool and enjoy dancing to most of them. These first nine tracks have very upbeat rythms. However, the rest of the songs are older and more boring. Perhaps it's just because I'm young, but I find myself skipping through those last several tracks. To be honest, if the last 7 tracks weren't as boring, I'd give this CD a higher rating.

I think it's cool that this CD has the Austin Powers theme song (track 9, "Soula Bossa Nova") on it. Yeah baby!

1 out of 5 stars Don't be sucked in by the title!.......2002-12-02

This is not a PARTY album. That would be a collection of songs that make people want to feel festive, get up and dance, or otherwise celebrate. What this album is is a collection of popular to semi popular to rarely heard of "latin" tunes. Very few will make you want to get up and dance, or party much at all. Although there are some decent artists mixed in, the album, taken as a whole, is a yawn. This is not the "best party album in the world, ever", not even a FAIR party album. There's WAY better music out there for a party!

4 out of 5 stars Fun stuff..........2002-03-08

I originally bought the CD for Beck's "Burro," which is the Mariachi version of "Jackass." The track is excellent... it's worth the price of the entire CD. The rest of the tunes are just an added bonus (except the annoying "Hot, Hot, Hot"). The CD is perfect for spicing up any party, whether on the dance floor, or simply as background music.

1 out of 5 stars altered art=kaka.......2001-10-15

The changes to the original artists' work on this album cause significant loss to the music quality. What a disappointment!

4 out of 5 stars Best of the individual Jukes albums.......2004-04-19

Even after all these years, I listen to this and wonder how Southside Johnny and the Jukes missed the big boat. Decidedly unfashionable at the time it was released, this album suffered because of it's traditional R & B stance in the age of disco, which is a big part of it's attraction for me. This album featured seven Jukes classics, but five of what I consider to be the greatest songs they ever recorded; Love On The Wrong Side Of Town, The Fever, Trapped Again, Without Love, and This Time It's For Real. This is one of my favorite driving albums and is well worth tracking down if you's like to take a trip back to the seventies without worrying about bumping into John Travolta.

4 out of 5 stars Great band.......2001-09-04

I remember having a blast when I heard them play on campus when I was in college in the early 80s. This band is great but unfortunately is underrated. This CD has most of the band's hits, including the classic 'Havin' a party', 'Talk to me', 'Trapped again' and my favorite 'I don't want to go home'. If you don't own a CD from this band I would suggest buying "The Best of Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes" where you can get more bang for the buck.

5 out of 5 stars It really is a party album.......1998-08-24

Southside Johnny Lyon and the guys really ROCK! Another jersey shore talent, he's been around a long time but unfortunately never got the accolades and attention his pal Springsteen does. If you ever get the chance to see Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes in concert, you will be seriously entertained BIG TIME. This album is a fave of mine and is always included in any party collection I wind up putting together.

Elton sure knows how to throw a good holiday party! Or at least someone at the record label does. This diverse CD with personal liner notes by the superstar songwriter throws the ancient surf rock licks of the Ventures together with the contemporary genius of Rufus Wainwright, the eccentric rock of the Flaming Lips and El Vez, plus some Christmas classics from the pop, soul, and hip-hop worlds. With 21 titles, including two Elton John tunes that bookend the package, it's one of the best value holiday discs and most enjoyable compilations you can find. From the Beach Boys "The Man with All the Toys" and Springsteen's live version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" to the Ronettes' "Frosty the Snowman" and Otis Redding's "Merry Christmas Baby," your party won't stop, even for the bluesy workout of "Please Come Home for Christmas" by the Eagles and the Band's haunting original "Christmas Must Be Tonight." Can you find these cuts on other Christmas records? Sure. But can you find them alongside the Pet Shop Boys' "It Doesn't Often Snow at Christmas," one of the record's real finds, or cuts by John Mayer, OutKast's "Player's Ball," the uniquely indescribable Kate Bush and others? No, you can't and that's the beauty of Elton's memorable choices. Proceeds benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Highly recommended. --Martin Keller

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Only Good Reason To Buy This CD Is To Support The Elton John AIDS Foundation.......2006-12-28

I was tempted to buy this CD last year when it was available from Starbucks directly, but having owned other - and better - versions of the songs listed, I decided not to. Once more I am making the same decision this year, skipping it even though I've recently heard Rufus Wainwright sing some memorable original - and both traditional and contemporary - Christmas songs at a holiday concert with his sister Martha, other members of their family and friends at Carnegie Hall (I will say that Rufus and Martha know how to have a great holiday concert!). The only good reason to buy this holiday mix of songs - which I presume were selected personally by Sir Elton John himself - is for the purpose of donating at least some of the CD's purchase price towards the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which is a most notable, laudable goal. Last, but not least, the final song on this CD, "Calling It Christmas", is a new, original song from Elton John with lyrics written by Bernie Taupin; if I'm not mistaken, it was recorded with Elton and the entire band playing at one of his favorite Atlanta, Georgia studios.

3 out of 5 stars Not a cool party to me! Hip-O Records yanked six tracks from the original version! Buyer beware!.......2006-12-20

The various artists compilation CD "Elton John's Christmas Party" was first released in 2005, but it was manufactured by the Hear Music imprint for Universal Music Enterprises. That means it was available for purchase mainly at Starbucks Coffee retail stores, with a retail price of $14.95 ($18.95 in Canada). Now you'd think Hip-O Records would be doing us a favor by re-releasing this set earlier this year on their label, thus making it widely available for purchase everywhere. But alas, that's not the case, because for the 2006 version of this set, a full six tracks have been removed from the original tracklist. Those six tracks are:

- "Frosty The Snowman" by The Ronettes
- "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" by Bruce Springsteen
- "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" by The Crystals
- "Playa's Ball" by OutKast
- "St. Patricks's Day" by John Mayer
- "Please Come Home For Christmas" by The Eagles

I'm not sure why Sir Elton wanted to include the OutKast and John Mayer tracks in the first place, and I don't consider those to be a great loss for a Christmas compilation. But here's what irks me that many people may not even notice: the Ronettes and Crystals tracks were both originally released on the classic 1963 Phil Spector holiday rock album "A Christmas Gift For You" (possibly the greatest holiday album of all time, if not one of the greatest). And if you look carefully at the cartoonish CD cover artwork, Sir Elton happens to be holding a vinyl copy of one of the old reissued versions of this album (when it was renamed "Phil Spector's Christmas Album" for reissues during the 1970s and 1980s). So not only has Hip-O yanked the two tracks that came from that classic Spector album, they didn't even bother changing the cover art for the new downsized version of the set.

Oh, and did I also mention that the suggested retail price of the new downsized version is $15.98. That's higher than the suggested retail price of the set when it had 21 tracks and was sold mainly at Starbucks Coffee stores in the U.S. This is yet another example of paying more and getting less, which is oh so woefully typical of corporate America these days. Personally, I can't understand why Sir Elton would go along with these changes, but I'm sure licensing fees had something to do with it.

So if you really wanna grab the better version of this compilation, my suggestion is to scan auction sites like eBay every so often, or buy a copy from a private seller here at amazon.com if one is available. Unfortunately, the original 21-track version of the set is now out of print.

4 out of 5 stars Elton John - 'Elton John's Birthday Party' (Hip-O).......2006-12-17

If you like Christmas music, you should undoubtedly get plenty of enjoyable plays from this fifteen track disc. Was actually quite impressed by cuts provdided by artists like the Beach Boys, Flaming Lips, Chuck Berry, U2, The Pretenders and The Band. Only tunes here that I, personally didn't care for were the songs by El Vez and Jimmy Buffet. Musically speaking, Sir Elton can most certainly assemble a good holiday trail mix.

I wouldn't bother except that the money goes to charity (hopefully).

5 out of 5 stars The best Christmas songs collection available.......2006-10-12

I bought this last year when it was on sale only through Starbucks. I really enjoyed it last christmas season.

I think it is the best christmas songs collection by different artists available.

Half of the songs I knew before and knew that I loved them. It was a very pleasant surprise to find out that the rest of the songs were on par with those i knew.

Go get it!

If one needed an example of rock's co-optation by the mainstream (or is it the other way around?), this 21-track, all-star live anthology is perfect fodder for the "yes" argument. Recorded at Buckingham Palace during celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee, it's sometimes hard to figure out which royalty is receiving the most honors here, the House of Windsor or the Brit contingent of rock's long-in-the-tooth royalty. Kicking off with a perfectly pompous rendition of "God Save the Queen" (Thomas Arne's, not the Sex Pistols') by Queen's (the band, not the royalty) Brian May and Roger Taylor and peppered with performances by the usual, knighted (some of them) suspects Phil Collins, Elton John, Eric Clapton, and Paul McCartney, much of this collection could have well served in 1977 during Queen Elizabeth's Silver Anniversary as well. Still, there's fun to be had imagining what must have been going through Liz's mind watching Tom Jones's salaciously swinging take on "You Can Leave Your Hat On" or Ozzy/Iommi's metal-manic perennial, "Paranoid." Indeed, it's the kitsch moments--Shirley Bassey's muscular "Goldfinger," Cliff Richard's raving rockabilly-tinged "Move It," Atomic Kitten's cover of "Dancing in the Streets"--that seem to be imbued with the most joie de vivre. Brian Wilson continues his remarkable, satisfying career revival with the evergreens "God Only Knows" (with the Corrs) and "Good Vibrations" (backed by Richard, Emma Bunton, and Atomic Kitten), performances that garner some of the evening's biggest ovations, while McCartney trots out "Hey Jude" for the inevitable all-star sing-along finale. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars A decent record of a memorable event in music history.......2003-01-15

(3.5-4*)
This is a decent CD of this historic musical event. We enjoyed the TV coverage of the event by VH1 and Mrs. Osbourne in the USA but inevitably much was cut. The opening National Anthem played by Brian May from the roof top of Buckingham Palace is unforgetable -- visually and aurally wonderful. Unforgivably they cut Tom Jones and Shirly Bassey from the TV coverage. The CD covers more of the Party which is great. However I believe it is not a complete record of the show -- I am pretty sure I heard (a fairly lack lustre version of) "My Guitar Gently Weeps" during the show -- somebody please stick an overdriven Les Paul in EC's hands and tell him to cut loose. I found Sir Paul way too over exposed and in your face for my tastes during the show -- fortunately that is not quite so grating on the CD. Sir Paul led a couple of dud songs during the show of which only one appears on the CD [they needed a shepherd's hook to pull him off really].

Queen (the group!) stole the show - of course nobody can replace Freddie Mercury for vocals but the boys did a surprisingly good job. Other memorable momments included Annie Lennox (always great it seems), Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys doing good vibrations and Ozzy Ozbourne & Tony Iommi playing Paranoid for the Royal family (who could have foreseen that?!). Sir Cliff Richard hamming next to Ozzy was a pretty strange sight too (good Christian Cliff all in white, dark prince Ozzy all in black - clever, eh?!).

5 out of 5 stars Party Hearty!.......2002-08-29

This is one of the best tribute CDs ever released, featuring England's rock and roll royalty. Sting is noticeably absent, but a pleasant surprise is the inclusion of Shirley Bassey. She proves that her voice has lost none of its power, as she belts out a strong version of "Goldfinger." Too bad she's not included on the current Goldmember soundtrack. Cliff Richard sounds like a young rocker on the rockabilly classic "Move It." It's bittersweet to hear Queen without Freddie Mercury, but Brian May and company carry on admirably. Sir Elton John must have missed the memo about performing older songs, as he turns in a heartfelt rendition of his current single at the time, "I Want Love." Even Brian Wilson, the only American in the concert, sounds in fine voice on "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations." Tom Jones may have had some royal undergarments thrown his way while singing the sexually suggestive song "You Can Leave Your Hat On." That song was originally sung by Joe Cocker, who is on hand to perform "With A Little Help From My Friends." Rod Stewart immediately follows him with a moving version of "Handbags And Gladrags." Having two gravelly-voiced singers in a row works well, which is further proven on "All You Need Is Love." Rod starts the song off, followed by Joe Cocker and chorus; Sir Paul McCartney joins in midway through the song. Sir Paul leads off the concert closer "Hey Jude," with all of the other artists singing along with the last chorus. I guess my invitation to the party got lost in the mail!

4 out of 5 stars How about 3&3/4 stars?, some of it was fun to listen to........2002-08-23

As I understand it the purpose of this concert was to celebrate 50 years of the Queen reign with a sampling of music from the time period. I think Prince William & Harry were supposed to have had a hand in the choice of artists selected, Queen Victoria must be spinning in her grave.
Some of the performances weren't the best in my opinion, Brian May's God Save the Queen might've been something to see from the roof of the Palace but it didn't sound like much. I thought Bryan Adams #5 Eveything I do was pretty good as was #16 Layla by Eric Clapton and #2 Can't buy me love by Phil Collins (by my count he was a drummer for 17 of the 21 selections). The Queen might not've been thrilled with it (who picked Ozzy Osbourne?)but it seems to have pleased an awful lot of people.

3 out of 5 stars Sir Paul And Friends Play For The Queen........2002-07-27

The Queens 50th annivesary "Party At The Palace" concert is a collection of mostly vintage[aging] rockers who performed some of their signature tunes for the Queen to raise money for her trust. The cd has it's ups and downs, but overall it makes for an enjoyable nostalgic listen. The highlights include Rod Stewart's "Handbags", Steve Winwood "Gimmie Some Lovin", Eric Clapton "Layla", Joe Cocker "With A Little Help From My Friends" and a fabulous version of "All You Need Is Love" in Which Sir Paul lets Rod Stewart and Joe Cocker sing lead. Paul McCartney ends the show with a resounding "Hey Jude" sing along. I must say That Brian Wilsons "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" are the best moments on the cd. His singing was fantastic. Some of the low points include Cliff Richard, Tom Jones[singing a horrible rendition of "You Can Leave Your Hat On"], Atomic Kitten and Queen minus Freddie mercury isn't the same. Still the good outweighs the bad here making this an enjoyable cd but certainly not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Millennium Blues Party brings the party to life.......2001-02-12

Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a new blues lover, this CD brings your listening pleasure to new peaks. This collection of nearly 80 minutes of blues tunes effectively brings together some of today's stars (Clapton, Cray) with past blues legends (Waters, Hooker).

If you're looking for some mood background music or some tunes to be a hit of the party...you need not look any further because Millennium Blues Party is your answer. Fact is...I'm not sure you can find a better mix of blues artists elsewhere!
