Album Description
The debut album from Cut Chemist, formerly of pioneering underground hip-hop group Jurassic 5, The Audience's Listening is evocative of an era when sound enthusiasts put out records for the adventure of it, not as a vehicle tied to hit singles and booty-shaking videos. Using a turntable, mixer and computer to create the songs, this gifted DJ has conjured an homage to what is possible. Varied, uplifting and unexpected, rooted in hip-hop but leaping into new sonic territory, The Audience's Listening offers musical magic created by the alchemist known as Cut Chemist.
Customer Reviews:
Intelligent album!.......2007-07-03
I only heard one cut (The Garden) from this album, and only heard it 3 times over the course of about 2 months. Outstanding tune, but I wanted to hear more.
FINALLY the DJ actually said who the artist was, and I bought the album immediately! This was a good decision on my part!
It is an intellegent composition, one that will not yield hits on the radio, but is brilliantly crafted. It requires actually listening to it several times to get into it, but the "effort" is worth it! And you won't get sick of hearing it on the radio every hour like so many albums!
If you have any interest at all in DJ compositions, this one is a must have!
fine turntablism.......2006-11-22
i think the people that bash this album or are dissapointed by it are the ones that expected too much of the album. and that's not the album's fault, that's their own.
let me tell you, i first heard this album performed live by the cut chemist himself. and it got me shakin', same with the whole audience. so if u get a chance to, go see it live... it was awsome.
so therefore i decided to pick up the album on vinyl and compact disc.
its a good album, especially if u like a mix of hip hop, funk and jazz. Djs should respect it because the turntablism aspect of the album is up to par, nothing new or totaly mind blowing, but creative nontheless. if this is your first album listening to cut chemist, its a good one, and i think even for the cut chemist fans, its apreciable work. its fun, creative, and gets you moving. i thought however there lacked a bit of energy from the MC on the track 'whats the altitude' on the CD. however, live, he rocked it.
its a short album, but its fun, and its short enough not to be too redundant, long enough to enjoy.
get a copy, its not a let down... if youre looking for something completely mind blowing, maybe this isnt your pick, but thats why i didnt put five stars. fine album all the way through.
The robots... are coming..........2006-08-28
Sometimes albums are made with groundbreaking new twists and sounds. Sometimes they are made for financial gain, via radio hits and MTV coverage. And then there are some that are really just made for the love of it.
Cut Chemist's "The Audience's Listening" appears to be one of the third category, though the turntablist/DJ/Jurassic 5-er does give electronica and hip-hop some novel twists in his first fully original album. But at the heart of it, it sounds like Chemist is simply dabbling in whatever he enjoys most.
"Start remembering what you hear," says a cheerful interviewer, before a patchwork of samples inform us about the DJs of the future, about music, the first annual DJ convention, and a lot of dogs barking. By the time you're finished with the intro, your brain will be in the right state for what comes next. ("People get ready... the robots are coming!")
He retreads familiar ground in the energetic percussion-heavy "My 1st Big Break," before switching over to a new sound -- bossa nova. Gypsyish guitar playing an energetic live tune, with a sample of Astrud Gilberto playing softly halfway through. It's an exquisite, ethereal tune that shows that Cut Chemist can do all sorts of music.
Lest anyone think that Cut Chemist has lost his edge, he dabbles in some truly weird stuff (a phone conversation done entirely with samples and scratches), sharply surreal hip-hop, and shimmering electronic numbers that sound like an arty sci-fi film. Cut Chemist dips back into bossa nova once before, before finishing up with the dense, catchy hip-hop of "The Audience Is Listening Theme Song."
Cut Chemist has done some pretty brilliant work with remixes and the "Brainfreeze" collaboration with DJ Shadow, so expectations were high for "The Audience's Listening." But the best way to listen is without expectations -- while it's neither groundbreaking nor brilliant, it is a beautiful, funky little album.
One thing it has from the beginning is a relaxed, laid-back feeling feeling. Cut Chemist shows that he can do everything from spare acoustics to dense, intense melodies, dabbling in a little of everything at least twice, and trying new sounds without trying anything too new.
It's not groundbreaking, but from the sound of it, Cut Chemist was just trying out whatever existing sounds he liked rather than striving for something new. The basic melodies are loaded with extra sound: lots of vinyl scratches, odd samples (glass breaking? dogs?), razor-sharp hip-hop beats, and everything from a cowbell to gypsyish guitar to waves of smooth synth.
Hymnal and Thes One make rather surreal cameos on a pair of songs, while Edan and Mr. Lif appear on the frenetic hip-hop "Storm," blurting out a breathless rap that gets stranger with every word.
Cut Chemist may not have broken new ground with "The Audience's Listening," but the result is still a fun, weird, and thoroughly likable album. Definitely worth a listen.
four songs you'll love..........2006-08-25
and the others are good, too. I'm particularly fond of "Spat", which rolls nicely into "What's the altitude". Spoon has a great groove, too. "The Garden" seems to be the song that gets radio air-time around here, so you'll recognize and dig the track.
Cut Chemist.........2006-07-28
As a turntable enthusiast, I can really respect what Cut Chemist does on this album. He really is just having fun with things, with a variety of beats and great samples. One track in particular he simulates a phone conversation with scratching, which blows my mind. Great album.

Album Description
The debut by Melbourne's Cut Copy is a collection of dream and love-laden tunes pulled together with Dan Whitford's inside-out knowledge of 80's flavored synths and studio trickery. Influences range from house to low-slung, fuzzed up punk garage, and seminal 80's raincoat-wearing Mancunian electro-pop to nouveau disco, often within one song. Impossible to pigeonhole. Pop and dance. Happy sad. Simple yet complicated. Sincere yet cool. Naive but clever.

from the moment I heard "Saturdays" I was sold. Gorgeous CD. Love the concept and how can you go wrong with music that makes you miss an era that you didn't live in?
best album I've heard in years.......2006-08-01
This is a foookin great album. The whole thing has a same-ness of sound, but is really quite varied. Some of the tracks are straight up electro while some are guitar based rock, but they pull it all off with such ease. GREAT songs, that flow into one another easilly and effortlessly. People talk about the synths and guitars on this album, but the bass is what propels it all. Whether its synth bass or real (and same with the percussion), the driving bass lines make it possible for the guitars and keys to do their thing. 'Autobahn Music Box', 'That Was Just a Dream', 'Saturdays', 'Zap Zap', are all pretty much perfect pop songs. The music makes you want to dance like crazy, but the lyrics are all about lonliness, sadness, longing, yearning. Its perfect. 'The Twilight' rocks in a way that sounds a lot (musically, not lyrically) like early PiL, 'Bright Neon Payphone' is an amazing rocker that for me is the climax of the album. All of the rest of it builds up to this song where the depth of the sadness and lonliness alluded to in other places on the albums is really exposed. Its great songwriting, the music rocks, the whole overall sound is, well, its hard to top. Then the album finishes with 'A Dream', a perfect comedown from the rest of the album, slow, bouncy, wistful. The whole album is so damn pretty! Beautiful music, everything I love all blended together into one great record. way to guy cut copy!
You've heard it before but..........2006-03-01
It gives a gracious nod to their influences: New Order, etc, possibly Superchunk. Anyway, I'm always baffled by people making the complaint that a band's influences are obvious. Music lovers know the difference between a bad rip-off and an appreciative nod. Nobody's doing anything new under the sun. This album is great for shaking off a bad day by shaking your hips instead. This entire album is a good listen. It's fun, moody, nostalgic...great for driving or for dancing by yourself. Plus, that cover is captivating.
A step back to the future........2006-01-07
I just cannot express enough how much I love this frickin band! I feel like a little teeny bopper listening to this album. By far my favorite new band. These guys arrange their elctro with true evolution. They toured with Franz Ferdinand in 2005. See these guys live if possible. It's a real treat. Make sure to download 'Kidz at the Disco' and the 'Nowhere Digitalism Remix'. These tracks are tough to find if you're not in the UK or down under. DJ's - If you can find anything vinyl by them, buy it. Very collectable. Everyone I play Cut Copy for loves them immediately. You can't go wrong buying this album.
ambient über-pop.......2006-01-03
recommended by a friend with superb taste, cut copy was a band i knew i would instantly be drawn to.
the album art was the initial indication.
mannequins. . .so hot right now. [and in the 80s]
daft punk-esque hooks, but distant dancing relatives- twice removed.
clearly new order and gary numan's estranged lovechild.
i love it. and so should you.
my advice: pick up this album, jump in your lamborghini, feather your hair, turn up your collar, splash on some polo, and head back to the time when reagan was king.

This collection of hip-hop DJ routines marked the first serious effort to reintroduce the DJ as a true artist to hip-hop fans. In the fog of producer-heavy rap music from the Bad Boy and Death Row camps that dominated listeners' ears in the mid 1990s, Return of the DJ is a refreshing shot of oxygen. It contains outstanding performances--including Rob Swift's classic Biz Markie routine in "Rob Gets Busy"--all from some of the still-burgeoning turntablist movement's most important DJs. Kicking off with Kool DJ E.Q.'s hip-hop primer, "The Death of Hip Hop," the whole collection is an amazing revelation of hip-hop's true legacy, as cut-and-pasted by artists such as Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Peanut Butter Wolf, and the World Famous Beat Junkies. You won't even miss the MCs. --Todd Levin
Customer Reviews:
What is it?.......2006-02-06
Every hip hop head around the world owns this. If ya don't, stop sleepin! Experience "Turntablism" from some legendary DJ's. The first and best installment of the series.
A great start.......2003-05-13
We've all heard a little scratching in old hip-hop and the very occasional new song, but this CD will blow you away if you're a discerning hip hop listener and if you've ever been intrigued by the DJ. I was introduced to modern turntablism when I heard the Cut Chemist track from this album on the radio one night, and it was worth every risky cent buying the whole CD from hearing that one track. Every one of them is outstanding; pick this up if you're at all interested in hip hop and are a bit percussion-minded.
Great mix of turntablism.......2002-09-19
This is a great scratch cd which encompasses many different types of turntablist styles. This CD is only topped by Vol. 2. Vol. 3 is a bit of a let-down but all three are worth checking out.
great to break into dj music.......2000-10-08
this is a great cd to kind of get a feel for turntablism. great starter.
Artistry.......2000-07-17
I am not a devote fan of the hip-hop genre. I simply do not have the tolerance for the way many artists rely upon a base of tired rhymes, and deabilitatingly conventional deliveries. Their are exceptions, i realize (my own personal favorites would be Tribe Called Quest's earlier work).
But the component of hip-hop that always pleased me the most has, and probably always will be held in the hands of the DJ. This album, simply put, is the finest collection of the best in the business.
Each track is an assimilation of samples expertly chosen from the roots of Hip-hop, and those few contemporary artists who have held true to their predecessors quality. This is, by and large, before the time when DJs value was based soley on those who out worked the rest, and raced to find the most obscure samples. Thankfully, and finally, this is also before the time when DJs, albeit poor ones, sold their wrists to the unholy junction of rap and metal.
So stare into the eyes of the goofy comic vampire on the cover and take a listen to what hip-hop has lost, and hopefully some day will regain.

Album Details
"how to Cut and Paste" Volumes One and Two Saw DJ Yoda Draw Influences as Diverse as Reggae, Electro, Funk, Hip Hop, the a Team Theme and George Formby, but the Biggest Reaction from Fans was to his Now Classic "80's Pop Megamix". Now Yoda Extends the 80's Idea to a Whole Mix - with Rock and Pop Records Ranging from the Respectable (Blondie) to the Completely Cheesy (Rick Astley) from the 1980's Sitting Surprisingly Comfortable in Between Hip-hop Hits from the Same Era.
Customer Reviews:
Impressively Wrought, a Little Schizophrenic.......2006-10-17
While Yoda is incredibly skilled, I do understand the complaints about the (over?) use of samples and incrediblly dense nature of the production. However, this is Yoda, and his idea that this is cut & paste, per the title should couch the highly constructed, collage quality of this mix. I think the scratching is both nostolgic and somehow new. While jumpy, if you like Shadow mixtapes and livesets of other DJs, then you will probably like this one too. takes me back to my childhood
Awesome Turntables - Not for scratch haters.......2005-03-13
It is a quality composition but not for those who do not appreciate turntablism. The selected tracks really do stink of 80's nostalgia, but Yoda rips them up into something new and funky.
Definitely a CD that I am always sticking on for a laugh and serious beats but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that religiously loves the tracks on the album, because they get picked apart like a corpse by a vulture.
If you like Yoda's other work, this fits like a glove.
big letdown.......2004-03-23
bought this on a whim also due to the interesting playlist but dj yoda does not have the force working with him on this one. way too much 'wicky wicky' and stupid samples cause a headache and ruin the flow. this was supposed to be a highlight of our upcoming 80's house party but its back to the store for me.....
Choppy flow, a little too much swearing, but very nostalgic.......2003-12-17
Bought this one on a whim ... it's not too bad, but ... DJ Yoda tries to interject a lot of samples, and they sometimes interrupt the flow of the music. Too many cuss words in his samples, too (but then again, I listen along with a 3 year-old-girl, so ... )
However, it does take you back to the 80s with the different movie samples ... the most used being stuff from "Ferris Beuller's Day Off." You might not think it's the greatest at first listen, but the cd does grow on you.
I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 because, at the start of the "Rise to the Occassion" song, a movie sample says "Go**amn!" and I SWEAR it's Chris Tucker's "Smokey" character from "Friday", which is, what, from 1995? Sorry to be a purist, but it said cut and paste from the 80s, not 1995.

I took a chance with this CD. I am not overly impressed. The first few tracks are interesting, kind of jazzy, but the remainder of the album is monotonous. Nothing new here.
polite jazzual affair.......2002-05-07
Ok, if I was in charge of producing an unmixed compilation, there are a few simple rules I'd follow. Find the absolute best dozen tracks I can find and sign, give copious liner notes to the artists who actually made the music, and include a sincere forward or acknowledgment to the listener.
But what do I know, I just buy music.
No, there's nothing wrong with Chill Out in the City 2nd Cut, it's just one of a thousand nondescript mixes destined to fade out of memory. The cuts are polite and jazzual downbeat affairs, typically a sax solo or the sort over drum programming (Blue Smoke, Carroussel, Cocktail). The highlights: Canadian producer Gavin Froome pays a smoky, downtempo visit on "Closer to Leaving," while Mo Horizons drop a spirited Afrobeat standing above everything else here.

French DJ Cut Killer shows his taste and skills in mixing old & new school rap. Features some bboy breaks through the whole album too. That's his best masterpiece before he went mainstream (to do crap) and it will probably stay the only one on top.

The following is taken from the CD booklet...
If you ain't heard of Double Dee+Steinski before, it's time to pay attention! Back in late '83, Tommy Boy released a single by G.L.O.B.E. and Whiz Kid called "Play That Beat (Mr. DJ)". It's now considered a classic track from the days of old, but back then it wasn't getting much exposure. To create a buzz, they invited people to make a remix of the song. The winning entry was "The Payoff Mix", also known as "Lesson 1", by Double Dee+Steinski. The mix was never commercially released, as sample-clearance would have been impossible (among those 'borrowed'from on the mix were Herbie Hancock, Culture Club, Humphrey Bogasrt, The Supremes and Grandmaster Flash). Constructed by splicing audio tape together, this was, and still is, an amazing cut-and-paste mix, probably the best ever done. Two more 'Lessons' followed. The first called "James Brown Mix" (Lesson 2) and the second "The History Of Hip- Hop" (Lesson 3). Both were done by DDS and released in the '80s.
Ten years later, the series continued. Being influenced by DDS, two separate DJs decided to return to the educational aspect of the originals and create "Lesson 4". DJ Shadow's version is more in the soulful, ambient vibe, pushing the envelope of hip-hop forward. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Shadow, Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5 also did a "Lesson 4" where he progressed by making an updated "Lesson" instead of more of the same. Cut Chemist went on to release "Lesson 6" in 1997.
More recently, three live versions have come out. "Live Lesson A" is a DJ set by Cut Chemist and his pal DJ Shortcut of Invisibil Skratch Piklz using 5 turntables in front of a club full of people on the "Furture Primitive Tour" in 1997. "Live Lesson B" showcases Steinski with Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow as they team up to recreate the Lesson series live at San Fransisco's Fillmore. Lastly, "Live Lesson C" is DJ Shadow doing his thing for 20 minutes in front of 100,000 concert goers at a huge French music festival in 1999.
