Rainy-day Synth-pop PERFECTION.......2004-09-22
The Newcastle trio of Dubstar created THE synth-pop Masterpiece with their debut album "disgraceful." Lead Singer Sarah Blackwood's ethereal voice takes quides us through tales of lost love, longing and insecurity, all delivered in her emotionally dead pan performances. Lead single "stars" is by far the best known track with its sweeping keyboards and memorable lyrics ("lets take our hearts outside, leave our lives behind, I'll watch the stars go out"). However all the tracks our excellent in particular the gorgeous and achingly beautiful "The day I see you again." I cant recommend this album enough for fans of synth-pop songs that make you laugh and cry. Inagine the cocteau twins produced by the pet shop boys. Yes, Its that good.
Blast from the past........2003-06-06
I bought this album way back in '95 and lost it when I went off to college in '97. Having finally replaced it, I've found Dubstar still sounds awesome. Really, I think this captures 90s pop at its best--just before the teenie bopper thing took off. I think I'll get their other albums...
This album is no disgrace.......2002-03-01
The cover art is, especially what's on the insert, but the Japanese album might have different cover art than the British version that I own, which is incidentally still in print in the UK. "Stars" is the most perfect song on the album, but every song on it is a keeper. It's perfect sing-along pop, universally appealing, and it rarely leaves my CD changer.
A Great Debut........2002-02-08
Yes, Dubstar, if you have never heard of them , are a fantastic and outstanding unique formation, which has sadly now split, but what they have left us is huge. Perfect POP is what suits best here. THis is their first album and if you have a tendence to like sweet melodic pop, Saint Etienne and stuff, you will appreciate this record.
And, the Way Out West Remixes (especially the one of Not So Manic Now) are relly great, as are the B-sides included.
If you have never even heard of Dubstar, start here..........2000-10-01
Dubstar's 'Disgraceful' is an absolute gem of a debut album. A permanent in my cd player. Once you've heard it, you will not be able to wait to hear all of the following albums, singles and b-sides. The heartfelt prose blended with a fresh pop beat will get you hooked, as well as Sarah Blackwood's beautiful voice. Being a fan of the St.Ettienne-to-Erasure genre, this album was an excellent supplement. It was the beginning of my obsession for Dubstar, and every album since has yet to disappoint. Get this and all the rest. You will not regret it.
