Customer Reviews:
This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01
This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."

WONDER WHO INSPIRED DIANA KRALL'S SINGING STYLE? LOOK NO FURTHER..........2007-05-01
... because DK's source of inspiration is the real deal - sexier and more expressive, she's a blast from the past worth checking out.
Julie London Ultra Lounge CD.......2007-01-07
Audio quality of digital re-mix excellent.
EQ especially of voice really tops.
Music must be via a well recorded original studio master, i.e.not a live concert (with inherent remastering problems) All in all a super update. Received airmail in Australia in good condition.
Julie London great.
S-E-X Appeal.......2005-01-11
Yeah, pals and gals, Julie didn't have the range of Ella, but she brought sexiness to the table . . . in double doses. While Doris Day made a career out of being the "eternal virgin," Julie didn't even start recording until after she had kids! Once you hear her sultry, throaty voice on these tunes, you'll never forget it . . . and it will definitely put you "in the mood for love." This particular collection leaves out a few tunes (most notably, her signature "Cry Me A River"), but the inclusion of some little gems like "Nice Girls Don't Stay For Breakfast" makes this collection a winner. So mix a shaker of martinis, put this on your player, turn the lights down and curl up with your sugar!
Never really out of date, these songs and this singer..........2002-02-19
I began to explore "Grown-ups music" ...in 1957. Julie London was not the top-rated "diva" of that era, but she certainly was the most sensuous...The performances are indeed sexy and great. Alas, in this compliation, the cover art is cartoonish and inappropriate. This is probably not the best Julie collection still available, but it ain't bad. There are 22 cuts, and at least half of them are wonderful. The other half are either a bit dull or a bit silly, but still listenable. The CD is certainly worth the price if you like adult women singing sophisticated material in a dreamy, low-key jazzy lounge style...My favorites: "You'd be so Nice to Come Home to"; "Makin' Whoopee";"Blues in the Night"; "You and the Night and the Music"; "Go Slow", and "Love for Sale." Julie London even makes the famous Mickey Mouse Club theme an exercise in arousal. If you like Sinatra's work in the "lonely or unrequited love" genre, you will also dig Julie's. I think "Wild, Cool & Swingin'" to be a bit misleading as a title...the overall tone of this collection is a bit more subdued...but that's not bad. The subtitle "The Artist Collection" is more right on...Julie was an artist. There is a great website devoted to her...find it with a Google search. And buy this one before it goes out of print.
The Absolute best!.......2000-07-21
I just started listening to Julie recently, and let me tell you, she is the best lounge singer there is! It's so unfortunate that she never did any more recording then she did. I am a fan of her and her "Emergency!" co-stars,but I never knew she could sing as she did! By the way--"Emergency!" rocks--don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Anyway, if you are a fan of lounge music, definitely purchase this! It is a complete refresh!

Customer Reviews:
was on my wish list, bought it in a Virgin Megastore.......2007-06-23
It's great music with great artists. Notable tracks that I didn't have on CD yet were 'cafe de flore by dr. rockit', 'all that you give by the cinematic orchestra'
And notable artists: chet baker, st germain, i:cube, stephane pompougnac, chateau flight (notable song not on this cd is "camping jazz" of which I know the name), gotan project, the herbaliser, slow train, mr scruff, mark rae (from Rae & Christian), Aim, jazzanova, de-phazz, beanfield, infracom, truby trio, marschmellows, boozoo bajou, mo horizons, alphawezen, thievery corporation.
These are the names that I know best, and to see that many on one compilation is a blessing.
Interesting mix of music.......2007-06-08
I bought this after hearing some of the songs playing in a restaurant and asking what they where playing. Decided to take a chance with it and was not disappointed. In general, the songs are interesting, some even fun. The mix includes a number of styles and doesn't get bogged down by one type. There is a song or two that I skip over when it comes up, but in general I can let each of the discs play and like most of what I hear.
However, don't bother getting the second volume, it's no good.
it's a solid collection for lovers of the genre..........2005-11-30
Nowadays when I venture out to buy an actual CD, it's usually a box compilation of some sort. iTunes has become a godsend; but I still get excited at discovering a promising CD on the rack and just taking a chance on what's there. For me it's part of the great experience of being a music lover.
If you get into the more relaxed side of club music and electronica--nujazz, downtempo, whatever--this collection will grow on you, one track at a time. In typical 'box set' fashion, don't expect to love everthing here; but there are enough tight little grooves to make it worth the purchase.
4 for the price of 1.......2005-09-08
There are places you can get the set for $24. If BarGrooves and jazz mix is your bag, City Lounge will fill the void. However, if you are looking for dance tunes, rhythm, beats that will get people up on the floor, this isn't it. I suppose the music would work best as background music (think KMart in a Bar Environment) while people are flirting with each other, concentrating on each others fleshy parts and sizes, and tanking Bombay and tequila.
Using it to pass time while stuck in traffic, or as a musical upper while on the way to work, isn't quite the goal of this sound. Be happy you bought the set of 4 rather than each one individually, as some tracks are better than others, and some CDs better than others, and maybe may make the $24 seem a justified purchase (vs. $74 or so).
Could be sexy enough music, but only if you are lying next to the other already naked and too lazy to get up and change the cd to something else...
Average customer rating:

Customer Reviews:
3 1/2 stars; very original, interesting, goofy, a solid listen, but not a must-buy by any means.......2006-03-11
There's some really good material on this disc. It's just buried underneath boring, techno-versions of lounge favorites. This CD is great at parties, as I'd imagine, but it's a little weak when listened to as a whole-album by yourself. The highlights (and moments of disgrace) are mentioned below somewhat extensively:
The album starts off with the upbeat, funky song "Hypnotique (Uberzone Remix)," and it's fairly decent, but at seven minutes, it gets too drawn-out and it is a true bore in the end. All hope is not lost, however, because the trance-esque track "Lonesome Road (Y-Ziq Remix)" is a true delight to the ears, and it is one of the better moments on the disc. It does have some annoying and dissonant drum beats that don't match the beautiful flow of the rest of the song, but overall, it's pretty good. Next, you get a very annoying "Watermelon Man" remix that pisses me off every time. Even when I do skip this track, I still hear the name "Watermelon Man" at the very begenning of the song, and it comes pretty damn close to screwing up the entire disc for me. A truly wretched moment on the disc. Then you get an interesting version of the somewhat-catchy Dean Martin & Julie London track "Sway," and it can really get a party started, but when listening to this track all alone, you begin to realize that you're a loser. After that, you get a good James Bond remix (I've played the Nintendo 64 game GOLDENEYE a million times, so this song gets old to me really fast, but for most people this song will be greatly enjoyed). After a horrid track to which I forget its title, THE moment of excellence on this album comes next on the brilliant "Good, Bad, and the Ugly" remix that sounds so great that it makes the disc worth it by itself. A hardcore techno edge is given to the western classic anthem, and it will make anyone feel like a true badass. One rocking anthem that's been played over and over in my stereo. After that, "Do it Again" follows, and it is very terrible. One must wonder who selected some of these tracks, because a lot of them shouldn't have been included on this lounge-compilation. "Séance on a Wet Afternoon" is the following track, and next to the good ,bad, & ugly remix, this track is the best on the disc. I often play "Séance" on chilly October nights. A perfect Halloween song. After that, the rest of the disc is pretty bad, so I won't go into detail.
Overall, I think this CD is worth it just because of the "Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" mix and "Séance On a Wet Afternoon." Too bad the rest of the disc isn't as good. I give it 3.1/2 stars. It was enjoyable, yet it was anything but memorable.
Thank God for Electronic.......2005-04-10
This album is truly the epitome of what happens when you take the oldies that you grew up with (Dean Martin, Julie London, Martin Denny etc.) and by accident dropped them in a bucket of Sulfuric Acid. I highly recomend this album if you are open to new ways of listening to some of the best muscians. Granted, it could have been better but, I truly did enjoy this album and don't regret the purchase.
Like a flower bending in the breeze.......2005-04-05
Here's an oddball concept: take some old "adult pop" songs of the '50s and '60s, and give them "electronica" remixes. Surprisingly, the results are actually pretty entertaining. Sure, some of the entertainment value is in the "kitsch" factor, but what's wrong with that? One of the most memorable remixes here is "Sway" by Dean Martin and Julie London. The weird thing is, Dean Martin and Julie London never recorded together. Their vocals on this remix are taken from two different versions of "Sway" which they recorded seperately. But you can't really tell that from listening to the remix here, it's pretty seamless. I don't think everyone will enjoy this album, but if you like to hear music that's somewhat offbeat, you may get a kick out of it.
This CD was a total waste of money.......2004-06-25
I hate this CD and wish I could get every cent back because it is horrible. The beats are all the same, the songs are too long and HORRIBLE remakes. Jump Jive and Wail is the only reasonable song, the others are repetitive, mundane, and just bad. Don't spend a cent on this, you're wasting your money. This CD stinks.
this rises above kitch and is actually good.......2000-05-15
The concept is absurdly clever (brilliantly stupid?) and shouldn't work, but it does. Take some all-time lounge classics (and a few odd songs like the James Bond theme or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly) and give them to electronic artists to remix. Yet it works well, mainly because of the talent that came on board: Uberzone, U-ziq, Utah Saints, Wagon Christ, Tranquility Bass, Gus Gus, Q-Burns Abstract Message, and more. These are artists who not only have talent, but have shown a a sense of fun and humor in their own productions.
Sure there are a few songs that don't quite pass the muster, but not many. And let's face it, you're buying this for kitch value anyway, so even those songs will have a charm to them. You won't play this often, but it's something you can always pop in to amuse friends, and there's enough cool songs to grab a martini and enjoy it yourself.

Customer Reviews:
Nowhere near as good as the first one.......2007-06-08
I was very disappointed with the collection. The first volume of City Lounge was interesting and eclectic. This one is almost half full of rap and or hip/hop songs (not my favorites), most of which are not any good. The songs of other types are in general uninteresting. There are a few here and there that are at least "listenable", and a couple that I even like, but for the most part it is not worth it. In fact, there is one song that was on the first volume! That is just lazy. Overall this was a waste of money. I'm not going to bother with buying the third collection now, as this one has soured me on the whole idea.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but keep looking.......2005-06-07
London Lounge has some great stuff on it (Troublemakers, etc), but in my opinion it doesn't hold up to the Paris Lounge(s) and Berlin Lounge discs. I'd recommend checking those out before the London one, unless you have some special reason for digging on London.
Disappointing.......2004-02-14
I am a huge fan of Acid Jazz and Lounge muic, however this CD did not meet my expectations at all. Since some of the best lounge music comes from places like London, Paris, Rio, and Tokyo, I was anticipating that this would be an awesome mix of songs. I would say out of the entire 2-disc album, there were only a few songs that were worthwhile to listen to. "From A Seaside Town", "Blacker" and "Shrimp" were pretty decent songs. If you like lounge music or if you are trying to get a good introduction to it, there are many other albums that are much better.
BETTER LOOK OUT, PARIS LOUNGE!!!.......2003-11-25
"London Lounge" is an excellent companion CD to the famous "Paris Lounge" series on the Wagram Records label. With incredible songs from virtual unknowns like Taxi, Gwyn Jay Allen, Nicole Wilson, Moloko, Smith and Mighty, Richie Thomas, Count Indigo and Two Banks of Four and a few knowns such as Herbaliser, The Cinematic Orchestra, Aim, Rae & Christian, Herbert, DJ Food, Mister Scruff and Subway, "London Lounge" unfolds into a cornecopia of very satisfying downtempo ("London by Day") and uptempo grooves ("London by Night")! Nothing here sounds generic or unnecessary. I played this one at a gathering of friends the other night and they couldn't sit down, even with the "Day" side playing. I must say that the "Paris Lounge" series (and "Berlin Lounge") pales a little in comparison to the "London Lounge". L.L. cost me a pretty penny, but the good thing about Wagram Records is at least you know you haven't heard a lot of the material they put together on their CDs.
The best lounge mix you will find.......2003-10-05
I own all of the lounge mixes by Wagram music. Of all of them, I like this one the most. The person who reviewed before did not have his facts straight (Thievery Corp isn't even on London Lounge). The "London by Day" is disc is melodic and relaxing. The "Night" CD also has good, albeit more uptempo, tunes. Every one who hears the CD's always asks where I bought them. So, unless you love hearing French music lyrics, I would recommend London Lounge over Paris Lounge any day.
"Not" lounge.......2003-10-02
I bought this disk set after thoroughly LOVING the "Paris Lounge" sets, and thought this one would HAVE to be just as good. I was wrong. Sure, there are some good, "essentials" from Thievery Corporation and Thunderball, but most music listeners interested in this genre already have those tracks. If you don't, do yourself a favor and pick up some ESL compilations like "Den of Thieves," or "Modular Systems." They represent the best electronic lounge music available.
As for "New York Lounge," unlike its Parisian-predecessors, its not lounge music. Instead, its a compilation of well produced, but musically mediocre R&B. Even the track by Miss Kittin (again.. not lounge, but at least cool) gets boring, with "Bill-Cosby as a pimp" style voice-over.
I haven't heard any others in this series yet, (Berlin, etc...) but I KNOW (because I live there!) that New York has better than this to offer.
