4 out of 5 stars The Original NE.......2007-04-04

Before mainstream and "good looks" to sell their vocals, there was New Edition. A young group of pre-teens and teens selling songs of good taste and good production.

This is what started the next wave of R&B and paved the way for groups like Boyz 2 Men, 112, and others.

3 out of 5 stars Good for once.......2007-03-15

It has only a few good songs, you get bored very easily from the songs wich sound very similar between them. Poor sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2007-01-10

If you are an 80's child and had the LP, you must buy this CD. I felt like in High School again! And my son loves "Pass the Beat". He has listened to it since he was 3 and dances to it.

5 out of 5 stars The "Jackson 5" of Boston!.......2006-04-21

Say hello to Boston-based New Edition. I said the "Jackson 5" of Boston because many of these songs sound like they were recorded by the Jackson 5. Also, one of these guys sounds like the pre-teen Michael Jackson. I love that digital percussion. It motivated many rhythmic individuals to "get down and funky"! It's 1983 and those people are having a ball "breakdancing"! One Top 20 hit from this album is the title track. That does sound like a Jackson 5 recording despite the modern percussion. Another Boston-based quintet would later enjoy success, that being New Kids On The Block(later NKOTB). Also, before there was New Edition, there was the hard-rocking Aerosmith. But the latter group began back in 1973. Let's introduce the NE members:Robert Brown, who would leave the group in 1985 or early '86 for a solo career and later take Whitney Houston to be his lawfully wedded wife. Ralph Tresvant, who'd go solo in 1990 but not become as successful and famous as Brown. Richard Bell,Michael Bivins and Ronald Devoe would re-christen the downgraded group as Bell Biv Devoe that same year. The other songs are great! I first heard the NE back in late '83 or early '84. The group recorded four more albums between 1984 and '88 to fulfill their initial contract.

4 out of 5 stars Good Old Days CD.......2006-02-25

This is an old school cd that everybody born in the 70's and early 80's should have.

2 out of 5 stars Worst Little Tour of Whorehouse.......2006-06-06

Roxie Lucas saves this review from having a single star. Her performance was the shining star in a rather lifeless, dusty, and uninspired revival of the original production which thankfully avoided Broadway. Compare with the rollicking original recording and you will easily notice the lack of life, spirit and vibrancy in the new recording. The addition of A Friend to Me added nothing to the score but sluggish redundancy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-10-24

I saw this production . . . it was a fantastic tour. I love this CD and highly reccomend it! This is by far the best recording of the show. If you are a fan of Ann Margret or of this musical I am sure you will love it. Now some people have complained about Ann Margret's voice not being what it was . . . I think it's better. Her voice is smokey, breathy and sexy . . . and perfect for this Las Vegas meets honky tonk score. She is the perfect Miss Mona aside from Dolly Parton. The supporting cast is very strong here as well. Flashy costumes and scantily clothed men and women . . . how can anyone not love this musical.

      4 out of 5 stars Ann-Margret in a lively performance.......2003-10-18

THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS is always a delight, and in this new cast album of the recent national touring production starring Ann-Margret, it's even better than ever.

Ann-Margret takes on the role of the Chicken Ranch owner Miss Mona with aplomb, offering up a lively performance. She sings lovely renditions of "Girl, You're a Woman", "A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place", and a brand-new song written especially for this production, "A Friend to Me".

Gary Sandy does well by the character of Mona's old flame Ed Earl Dodd, with fine support from Rob Donohoe as Melvin P. Thorpe and Hal Davis as Edsel Mackay.

Avery Sommers adds a soulful voice to the character of the sassy bordello maid Jewel, and offers up a show-stopping "Twenty-Four Hours of Lovin'". Roxie Lucas plays the role of the thankless Doatsy Mae, and sings her self-titled number quite affectingly.

Terri Dixon and Jen Celene Little do well by the featured roles of Angel and Shy, with the Chicken Ranch girls offering up a superb rendition of the heartbreakingly-lovely "Hard Candy Christmas".

All-in-all, if you love this delightful musical, you'll adore this brand-new cast album!

4 out of 5 stars Star Power in the House - -The Whorehouse, that is........2002-03-06

Ann Margret`s singing voice is quite different from what you`d expect if you heard the previous cast album; however, she purrs her way through them while infusing a great deal of charm and personality to her renditions. Her numbers are not musically beautiful, yet they manage to be touching, sexy, rawnchy and pleasing. You can feel her elgant, strong, glamorous presence which, incidentally, are the character requirements for Miss Mona. The musical arrangements are superb, the energetic entr' acte is a welcome addition to the already familiar musical program. The ensemble is superband Watchdog, the Governor and Jewel all stand out in their solo numbers.

The sad note is, the "Doatsy Mae" number does no justice to the original. Although acceptably sung, it fails to covey the furstration, hope and dreams of the character. Overall, this CD is surely worth the price: with its good vocals, wonderful score and general sense of innocent mischief, you'll have a great time listening to this all-out for fun musical.

2 out of 5 stars Ann Margret Disappointing.......2002-02-25

After listening to this cast album I was horrified and disappointed at the way Ann Margret sounds. Her voice is not in good form and on more than one occasion she fails to stay on key. It is very sad to hear because she has always been one of my favorite performers. The show is coming to Portland in 2 weeks but I think I will bypass this particular production.
Bruce Kimmel always does excellent work. His CDs are flawless. However, everything seems horribly over miked, in particular Ann Margret. You can hear every breath she takes and it sounds like they were trying to compensate her voice. The orchestra sounds thin as though they are not using a lot of instruments. The chorus does not sound as rich and full as they do on the original Broadway cast CD. This might be due, in part, to the recording studio. It was recorded on their day off during a three week run in Dallas, Texas.
There are some excellent supporting performances (hence the two star rating)that are enjoyable. Roxie Lucas, as Doatsie Mae, has a nice solo as well as Avery Sommers singing "24 Hours of Lovin':.
Gary Sandy and Rob Donohue are also fine in less flashy roles.
Perhaps it is a production that is better seen than heard.

5 out of 5 stars nothing will ever effect me like this........2006-10-21

Soviet's "We Are Eye's We Are Builder's" is perhaps one of the most important album ever. Soviet isnt just some random band...and this album isnt just another album to put on the shelf. this is art. this is music. this is some of the most melodic, beauitul, seductive, and rare things to ever enter your ears, and peirce your mind. I first heard Soviet in 2002, while driving my first car. it was a 1989 audi 90, that i bought for 500 dollars. i thought it looked so futuristic, and beautiful, in a strange way. i needed something to go perfectly aloing with this...and soviet was it.

Soviet is more then jsut dirving music though. Keith's lyrics are some of the most perfectly fit, and smart lyrics to ever rid shot gun with synths. his voice is just the perfect companion to his gear, and he knows how to use it. Soviet Bot is perhaps one of the best songs to use as an example of his true amazing abiltiy to write beatufiul lyrics

"we were never stars, but nearly stencils, drawn upon with custom pencils"

the first time i heard those lyrics, i teared up. from this day whenever the time is right, when my mind is open, and soviet bot comes on, a tear comes to my eye, just because the song is so speical, and rare. my imagination runs wild as the song kicks in, with his synthnerd lyrics, and bring in this image of playing a show to a lonely crowd, its jsut perfect. soviet is perfect.

now another amazing thing about soviet, is that with all these lyrics heavy, melodicly ambient pop songs....there is also some great dance tracks. breakdown being my fav. i recently moved to CT. the state the soviet ringleader Keith is from. driving down 95 into NYC, and taking metro north jsut give me perfect impressions of where he gets his ideas, and thoughts from.

its been quite a few years since this album came out now, and one thing remains. they had all the reviews, all the right complations, the right shows, and tours...but they are like the ghosts of electroclash...the fogotten gems. perhaps thats what makes them so beautifully special. soviet is a secret. soviet is in permafrost. soviet is MYSTERIOUS. you can search the internet all damn day. log onto your fav. P2P prgram, and you cannot find anything about soviet. its almost as hard to find soviet information as it is to find a new wave band that had only a few shows in 1978. this is their beauty. whether they meant this or not..it works. with this age of ebing able to find anything in a matter of seconds, it makes soviet age like a fine wine.

i had a chance to meet keith of soviet last spring, and i feel honorded to meet the man who has crafted something so amazingly special. this is not an album to pass up. this is something that will go down under so of the best, most amazing music to be created in the last 25 years. keiths views, and choices on music are perhaps so of the best, and most creative, and inspiring around.

4 out of 5 stars A good synth pop album which is unfortunately a bit cheesy and simple - genre fans will still like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2005-12-30

Soviet isn't going to bring synth pop back into the forefront, but they do deliver the goods in terms of catchiness and fun. "We Are Eyes, We Are Builders" contains a TON of VERY good synth pop songs (pretty much the entire album's worth). The songs themselves aren't very interesting lyrically or vocally (he's not bad, but the guy could work on his singing style. The lyrics are also pretty memorable and relatively easy to sing along with), but overall the pros far outweigh the cons. Even if it IS a tad cheesy, what synth pop albums aren't (in the world of synth pop, this and Joy Electric's "Hello, Mannequin" clearly stand out)? The material isn't groundbreaking, but like with Superdrag's "Regretfully Yours" the AMOUNT of good synth pop here makes it a good buy for any 80's/synth-pop fan. It's just an extremely entertaining synth pop album. Synth pop fans will definitely dig this. Highly recommended!

      Highlights include:
      "Commute"
      "Circuit Love"
      "Marbleyezed"
      "Candy Girl"
      "Lonely Days"
      "Breakdown"

5 out of 5 stars SOVIET :: electro goth rock.......2005-07-01

Most of the info below is from flamingfish.com:

      Band Members:
Keith Ruggiero (1995 - ?: vocals, synthesizers, guitars)
Chris Otchy (1995 - ?: lead synthesizers, additional programming)
      Amanda Berkowitz (programming, backing vocals?)
      Kenan Gundoz (guitars, backing vocals)
      Greg Kochan (rhythm synthesizers)

      History:
The New York City-based outfit known as Soviet was founded in 1995 by synth-wiz Keith Ruggiero. The band was heavily influenced by the music of the early synth-pop artists of the late 70's and early 80's, including Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, Georgio Moroder, Ultravox and early O.M.D., among others.

The outfit gained national recognition after becoming part of the burgeoning "ELECTROCLASH" scene that grew out of New York City shortly after the start of the new millennium. This new subgenre combined the image of punk rock with a revival of 80's synth-pop music.

Soviet became the first outfit to represent the "ELECTROCLASH" sound in the Christian music market after signing to Plastiq Musiq, the indie electronic music label founded by Joy Electric frontman Ronnie Martin. The band's debut album, We Are Eyes, We Are Builders, was released in mid-2001 and became a hit in both the Christian and secular electronic music scenes. Songs like "Commute", "Marbeleyezed", "Circuit Love", "Candy Girl" and "Soviet Bot" (which is NOT a remake of the New Edition song) all featured catchy dance beats, uptempo melodies and retro synth effects that deserved a wider audience.

The band reissued We Are Eyes, We Are Builders with a few different tracks on the independent Head Records a short time later. Despite being mentioned in a Newsweek article on the "ELECTROCLASH" scene and drawing praise in other secular publications, Soviet has not released any new material since.

Although the band has also apparently tried to distance itself from the "ELECTROCLASH" label in recent years, its music may have influenced Aussie synthpop outfit Paradoxx to adopt the style on its last two albums, Teknologie and Atomika.

      Current Status:
Keith Ruggiero is currently working on solo projects under the moniker KAR Songs (www.karsongs.com & www.myspace.com/sovietboy).

The full title of this CD is "Tom Ardolino Presents: The Makers of Smooth Music (MSR Madness Vol. 2)". MSR Madness Vol. 1 was titled "The Beat of the Traps" and was released on vinyl only. But fear not, 12 of the 16 tracks from The Beat of the Traps are included here, with the remaining 4 tracks included on the MSR Madness Vol. 3 CD. So, what the heck does MSR Madness mean anyway? Well, MSR Records was the leading producer of song-poem records. Okay, so what are song-poems? They are lyrics which have been set to music for a fee. Typically, the service was promoted through small display ads in popular magazines, comic books, tabloids, men's adventure journals and similar publications with a headline reading (essentially) Send in Your Poems - Songwriters Make Thousands of Dollars - Free Evaluation. The term lyrics was avoided because it was assumed potential customers would not understand what the term meant. People who sent their poetry usually received notice by mail that their work was worthy of recording by professional musicians, along with a proposal to do so in exchange for a fee. The melodies were either improvised or recycled and musicians often recorded dozens of songs per recording session using minimal resources, often in one take. The recordings were then duplicated on 45 RPM vinyl singles or compilation LPs with dozens of other songs by amateur lyric writers. Copies were sent to the customer. Promises that they would also be sent to radio stations or music industry executives were rarely if ever kept -- partly because the recordings would not have been taken seriously by professionals. The practice played off the intense desire of unsophisticated people to realize their ambitions of making money from writing popular songs. In the 1990s, some record collectors "rediscovered" these recordings. The main attraction of them is how kooky some of them are. Some these songs have really bizarre lyrics and off-kilter performances. If you enjoy hearing oddball music, you'll probably get a kick out of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: This record can only be played LOUD!!!.......1999-09-27

"The Go-Go's with ATTITUDE"--that's how someone I know described THE FRIGGS. They reminded me of the early Beatles-- though they'll all tell you their favorite band in the whole world is The Rolling Stones. Did hard-driving rock & roll ever sound so COOL? Did anyone ever make angry, bitter lyrics so much FUN? When the movie JAWBREAKER came out, I felt the wrong band had appeared onscreen near the end-- THESE girls are the REAL THING! Buy this CD and learn for yourself. Hear PALMYRA DELRAN wailing out "I Thought You Said That You Were Gonna Kill Yourself" (telling people to STOP complaining!), "I Cringe" (ex-friends who give one the chills) and "On The Scene" (some people are WORTH avoiding). Listen as SUKI VON TRAPP brings a tear to your eyes with "Got Your Letter". Fall in lust with LEXY PLUMM as she belts out "Loathe/Hate Relationship", "Bad Word For A Good Thing", "Cheatin' Song", "Not In Love". Be driven into an uncontrollable frenzy with "JUICED UP", one of the most exciting rock & roll records I've heard in decades!! I've been known to play this CD twice a day-- but then, I've only seen them in person so far 32 TIMES... (So, like-- when's the follow-up?)
