Amazon.com essential recording

PE's third album is dense, heavy, and urgent as a bullet. Fear of a Black Planet single-handedly added half a dozen phrases to the language, and not just from Chuck D.'s troop-rallying bellow--Flavor Flav's "911 Is a Joke" is as catchy an indictment of urban policy as anyone has ever come up with. The Bomb Squad's music is complicated, challenging, terse, and totally funky, and Chuck matches it with one impassioned pronouncement after another: on Hollywood's racism, on miscegenation, on "real history / Not his story." The album ends with "Fight the Power," the group's ultimate statement of purpose, from its pounding, atonal sound collage to its furious politics. Put Black Planet on, and it's always a long, hot summer. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Rap heaven.......2007-05-04

Fear of a Black Planet transcends what we know as rap and goes down as just a great piece of work in any genre. This is an album that combines all the elements: vision, cohesion, originality, scope, ambition, confidence, substance, and relevance. From the sound bites of the opening track right on down to the call to arms of "Fight the Power", this masterpiece is breathtakingly on the mark. These songs deal with a wide range of subjects such as hope ("Brothers Gonna Work It Out"), interracial dating ("Pollywannacraka"), the bigotry of showbiz ("Burn Hollywood Burn"), and everything in between to create an album of sheer power. Even the throwaways like "B-Side Wins Again" and "Reggie Jax" keep the listener interested. Fear of a Black Planet is just a massive onslaught of song-tumbling-into-song that grabs your ears and refuses to let go. Chuck D has always been a master of the 5-minute rap song and on here, he delivers maybe his best ever on "Welcome to the Terrordome", Chuck D spilling his guts about everything that pisses him off at a schizophrenic pace about the dangers of propaganda. It is truly a magnificent and moving piece of personal songwriting. All in all, Fear of a Black Planet is right up there with Blur's The Great Escape, Radiohead's OK Computer, and Massive Attack's Mezzanine for best album of the 90's. A+

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album, but..........2007-04-05

...Not PEs best. Without a doubt a classic, but not better than Nation of Millions, BRtS, or Apocalypse 91. 'Fear' lacked the cohesion of these others with a few missteps like: Can't Do Nuttin' For Ya Man, Reggie Jax, and 4(!) instrumentals.

And, not the fault of PE, or the song, which was good when it came out, but Fight the Power was so over played I can no longer listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Another hip hop masterpiece!!!!!.......2006-03-12

PE is another hip hop music icon that'll be talked about in 100 years as pioneering the heart and soul of America's truest art form of self-expression, joy, pain, heartache and real world problems and solutions.

You don't know hip hop and you definitely know hip hop music at its highest, purest form if you don't own, know of or even heard this album.

It's overwhelming Afrocentric (par for the course circa popular hip hop 1989-mid 1990).

For all listeners, you'll definitely get a strong sense that PE has something to say about Black Empowerment and challenging the status quo.

For white listeners, please don't be scared off by this album's Pro Black sentiments.

PE's Pro-Black messages are NOT anti-white ... PE's very much about self-help.

I can remember seeing tape of a documentary back in 1993 of a PE concert they performed waaayyy out in the boonies, somewhere in Middle America where minorities are an entity the local yocals probably only saw on TV.

Point is, they talked to several members of the overwhelmingly white, big hair, mullet-sporting crowd and to my surprise and delight, the crowd "got it."

They spoke with respect and admiration of PE and explained themselves how they thought it wasn't offensive and that PE was just promoting Black empowerment and for more people to get education, question society's way and know their history.

Powerful stuff (both this album and that documentary).

5 out of 5 stars Still revolutionary!.......2006-02-16

"Fear Of A Black Planet" - The title alone is worth the money.Such a great undertaking in making this album and you here it from the first cut.So much texture from the interludes to songs, practically seemless.Mostly remembered for "Fight The Power" but at so many points of this album Chuck D drops an entire history course ear whooping without the listener realizing it.He had the fury of a poet, the urgency of a street reporter and the wisdom of a teacher. Its like listening to a rebel harnessing all of his frustration and anger into some sense and direction.Flavor Flav keeping pace with his yeaah boyeees gave the songs an audience almost without getting in the way.Hank Shocklee and Co. did a masterful job with the production and arangment of the loops, samples and instrumentation.Future producers for any music can listen and learn. My track highlights are as follows:
1)Welcome to The Terrordome
2)Brothers Gonna Work It Out
3)911 Is A Joke
4)Who Stole The Soul?
5)Fight The Power

- Not in that order, just my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Fight the Power!.......2006-01-29

Most of the younger generation (those born in the 1990's) are probely familer with Flavor Flav with all the TV spotlight he gets on VH-1. Yet back in the Day when Flavor was cracked out, he was with the likes of Chuck D and Terminator X in a very important rap group Public Enemy. This is my favorite PE album of the bunch. They say three times is a charm, and since this was thier third effort, not only did they manage to pull off their best album, but one of the top ten best albums in hip-hop EVER! Almost every song here is a Gem, and for all those that listen to garbage hip-hop (50 Cent, Juvinelle, Little Jon, D-12) then maybe you should use those CD's as coasters or frisbees, and pick up Fear of a Black Planet to hear what REAL Hip-Hop soundsl like. Unfortanltly, the band started to go downhill from here, with two less then steller efforts after this one, and then completely vanishing into thin air. With the return of Flavor outta nowhere being on VH-1's "The Surreal Life" and 2 other shows on VH-1, it seems like Public Enemy also came back. I have heard some of the newer material, but it just doesn't live up to this. This is a real important piece of hip-hop history, as a matter of fact, MUSIC history. Please Put this one in your collection if you dont have it. ENJOY

Album Description

Little Box of Horrors is a demented treasure trove of ghoulish, horror punk delights from Wednesday 13's Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13.

Before becoming frontman for the very successful Slipknot offshoot Murderdolls (and releasing a solo album on Roadrunner), Wednesday 13 lead the ultra-campy Frankenstein Drag Queens through four albums and shows with Static-X, GWAR, Jack Off Jill and The Genitorturers before putting the band on hold in '02. With Wednesday 13's second solo album on the way (plus several recent unannounced Frankenstein Drag Queen reunion shows) expect to hear lots more from the Frankenstein Drag Queens in '06!

This six disc box set features four original albums(CD 1: The Late, Late, Late Show, CD 2: Night of the Living Drag Queens, CD 3: Songs From The Recently Deceased, CD 4: Viva Las Violence) plus a rarities disc and a live DVD!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing for any Wednesday 13 fan..........2007-01-12

I was a bit skeptical at first because I was first introduced to the Drag Queens after I got into Murderdolls but this box set is completely amazing and worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars A Long Time Coming.......2006-08-03

This boxset has been a long time coming. But, was it worth the wait? ABSOLUTELY!! The Little Box Of Horrors compiles all 4 of the FDQ cds, along with an expanded rarities disc and a DVD. Now, there are some downsides to the boxset, which will disappoint very little. First, the positives. You get all 4 of the FDQ Cds in one shot. No need spending hundreds of dollars ( like me) to find good quality copies of these cds. Plus too, the Rarities cd contains things that wasn't even on the original Rare Treats cd that the band released, and a few of the tracks, even the die hards ( such as myself) haven't even heard until now. Double devil horns to Wednesday for putting together such a collection. Now,the bad side. First of all, while Wednesday did clear out the vault with this release, there are two songs missing- "Chop Off My Hand", and "Hey Mom, I just killed a chicken". The other downside is the dvd. The title of the dvd is Transvestite Chainsaw Massacre. That particular title WAS released through the band on VHS and available at shows and through mail order. However, the DVD is not the full show and only "highlights" of the video. Why Wednesday didn't put on the full show, or even the music videos that FDQ has done throughout the years, I don't know, but would like to find out. Perhaps with the success of this release, they will re-release all of the old VHS tapes on DVD, or even put out a new FDQ cd, and have the 2 missing songs as bonus tracks. This boxset was also released limitedly overseas through a different company, along with different artwork and a booklet. Here's to the future of the FDQ's. May they not rot away anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars Rough & raw, just great.......2006-07-05

Great CD box set, it's rough & raw like goth metal should be.

5 out of 5 stars Murderdolls, plus so much more.......2006-07-03

if you're a fna of the murderdolls or wednesday 13's solo work, this boxset is perfect for you. as you listen from the first disk to the last, you can see how wednesday has evolved over the years. it starts off raw and gritty, but leads into darker, and much more creepy music that shows he was heading straight to transylvania 90210. also, you discover just about every murderdolls song was a FDQ song, or part of one. the DVD is great addition, sinse there is a slim chance of catching them live any time soon.

overall it's a great, dark, sick and funny purchase. 5 stars for sure!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sets ever.......2006-06-15

This is one of the best box sets I have ever purchased. It is great from beginning to end. I love Wednesday 13, Murderdolls and FDQ. If you are a fan of any of those you need to buy this set. I have listened to it over and over again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A measure of their genius.......2005-11-30

This is perhaps my favourite Gathering disc, although the crunchy, delicate _Mandylion_ remains a favourite. This the band in full on experimental mode, letting fly with dreamy synths, pseudo-techno beats, personal, insular acoustic tracks and, of course, Anneke's heavenly vocal range.
There is definitely a shift in tone from the _Mandylion_, _Nighttime Birds_ records to this one, a switch mainly manifested in a decrease in overall heaviness and the above mentioned increase in experimentalism. Over the course of two discs the band allow themselevs space to reach out in many directions, and it is surely a measure of their proficiency and the remarkable overall quality of their writing ability that most tracks are winners. 'Frail' and 'Rescue me' see the band run the emotional gammut, with shifting dynamics and heartfelt choruses. As always everything is very tatestfully done: there is very little in the way of excess or cheese and every player contributes well to produce an overall effect of clarity and unity, the songs being loosely linked by ideas of travel, motion and general change.
'Liberty Bell' is more high octane, verging on metal with intensity,'Travel' is epic and GORGEOUS, especially the emotive conclusion (Anneke!). Real delights lie on the second disc, with 'Probably bulit in the fifties' and 'Illuminating' among the best tracks here.
Recommended highly to open-minded listeners, this is probably not the place to start with the band: you cant go wrong with _Mandylion_ to begin. Nevertheless, this is a stunning piece of work that showcases just how much The Gathering are capable of.

5 out of 5 stars layered masterpiece that takes many listens to appreciate .......2005-11-19

I discovered this band late. However after buying their albums after being exposed to this great band through "Souvenirs" I believe this is The Gathering's great work. However it takes many listens to begin to appreciate it.

On a basic level compared to other Gathering albums, the songwriting appears to be simple and the band appears to be holding back in the playing department never quite taking off into full "rock out" mode with raging guitars and double kick drum moments that graced their previous albums....However, the gathering apply the "less is more" approach with stunning results. The songs have space and openess compared to Mandylion and Nighttime Birds. But more importantly, the band finally learned how to make a album sound not based on trying to recreate the "live" feeling in the studio. The band and their producer and engineer succeeded because this thing is one of the best recorded albums I own. The sonics and textures on this thing are a marvel. I hear the band was influenced by Radiohead's "Ok Computer" when they recorded HTMAP (another album, if one remembers that took some time to figure out it was a masterpiece as well)

Sonics alone a great album doesn't make. This thing also has just mind blowing moving music similar to the scope of early 70's Floyd Albums. And on top of that, this album contains what I consider one of the greatest rock songs of all time, "Travel". A Requiem for Mozart of sorts and at nine minutes, a song that never becomes boring after several repeated listens.(quite a feat)

5 out of 5 stars Progressive, Atmospheric, Innovative .......2005-06-17

The evolution of The Gathering since "mandylon" havent stoped amazing us , with every new album this band from Netherlands they improve their sound and concept in a so fascinating way that you can easily become an addict to Annekes voice an the musical structures that sorrounds her beautlfull and angelical voice (presence in live performances are equal).

How to Measure a Planet? is their unique double album to date and you can realize how this double space available is filled with many of their most charming pieces , just check out "Liberty bell", "great ocean road" , "marooned" and the experimental "probably build in the fifthies"

If you want to try one of the most experimental albums from The Gathering get this one, however every album since Annekes joined this band is awesome

5 out of 5 stars And the air - we all dare, to ride it somehow... .......2005-04-15

I am quite simply out of words to describe this. It's simply one of those albums that requires a few good listens, not just words to justify buying it. But I'll try my best to get to the point.

The Gathering really outdid theirselves with this 1998 release, their fifth studio album, and third with singer Anneke van Giersbergen (who contributed to Ayreon's Into the Electric Castle that same year). Not even their 2000 follow-up, If_Then_Else could compare. With this masterpiece, they took the sound they had, stretched it out a bit, used a more layered style of songwriting, and experimented with their instruments to make each piece stand out. The concept behind this 2-disc journey encompasses the theme of travel. Meaning we get songs about roads, maps, planets, planes and voyages through space.

Lyrically, the Gathering are at their peak, crafting atmospheric stanzas to create a relaxing mood. This album is a tad more uptempo than previous works, but the results are more than satisfying. Anneke sounds at her best, listen to her calm, low singing on "Frail", or her psychedelic wailing (if you can call it that) on the catchy-as-hell "Liberty Bell". The guitars sound great, and complement each song (especially the slower ones) quite well. Bass is not lost throughout production, and the drumming fits perfectly. One of the things I respect about the Gathering is that, although they are a symphonic band, they never let the keyboards dominate the music like so many others have.

Disc 1 kicks off with the appropriate opener, "Frail (You Might As Well Be Me)", a slow-tempo, moody track that can easily define the songwriting of HtMaP?. Next is the more relaxed-sounding "Great Ocean Road", a personal favorite - Anneke sounds so beautiful on this one ("It is all there - the earth and the ocean - they contain the power of our lives"). She even plays backing guitars on two songs, "My Electricity" and "Locked Away". The former is a comfortable ballad, a song that will stick with you from the moment you hear it and never wear out. The single "Liberty Bell" - damn! Another song to be imprinted in your memory for all eternity. I can never seem to forget the lyric "we are sitting in a chair" - this song refers to a rocket ride into space. "Marooned" is absolutely hypnotizing, and "Travel" does a good job of closing Disc 1. This is by far my favorite of the 2 discs, no weak tracks.

Opening disc 2 is the instrumental "South American Ghost Ride", which I don't listen to all that much but is still good. Then comes "Illuminating", by far my favorite track off of both discs. Again, Anneke really shines on this one ("I will feel great without my weight holding me down"). "Probably Built in the Fifties" is my 2nd favorite ("I trust the speed until I have no need to run anymore"). Definitely not to be overlooked. The only track that isn't all to interesting is the closing instrumental self-titled track. Anneke does some wailing on this, but there are no lyrics. It drags on for a half hour but most of it is filler. It doesn't really ruin anything though. I hear they had originally planned to scrap this disc, but I am most certainly glad they did not.

What more is there to say? How to Measure a Planet is one of the best records I own, it is my favorite album of the Gathering and probably the 2nd or 3rd favorite of my entire CD shelf. A definite must for those seeking a musical journey.

10/10

5 out of 5 stars Complex, Ethereal, Amazing Music.......2005-01-18

I got this after If_Then_Else the album released after that one.. If_then_else was amazing for its moody music and amazing vocals. This album preceeds it with much more complex songs, AMAZING vocals and even more moody ethereal music. Songs like Marooned, Frail, The Big Sleep among others provide the ethereal sense. While other songs like Great Ocean Road and Libert Bell are a bit heavy (NOT AT ALL LIKE NIGHTTIME BIRDS OR MANDYLION.. MUCH MUCH SOFTER). Anyway, even the title song, which is overly long i must admit is amazing, if you think of it as an experience rather than a song.

Here's my song-by-song review:

CD1:
Frail - Great mood setter. Very Ethereal.
Great Ocean Road - AMAZING song in all aspects. Rock lovers will like this one very much. One of my favourites.
Rescue Me - Very soft. Not really that amazing
My Electricity - The guitar combined with the voice combined with synths is all we need.
Liberty Bell - The hardest song on the cd. I got bored of it quickly.
Red is a slow colour - I can't decide how i feel about this song. but it's great i know that.
The Big Sleep - For me, this is the moodiest most ethereal spacey song on the cd. I love that kind of stuff.
Marooned - Great in all aspects. The lyrics are great. Everything.
Travel - A bit long but still very good.

CD2:
SA Ghost Ride - AMAZING instrumental
Illuminating - good song. Lacks a bit tho. plus its a bit redundant.
Locked Away - Amazing guitar opener. Anneke being vengeful. JUST GREAT
Probably built in the fifties - Great song. Changes alot in the middle.
HTMAP - A great audio experience that should not be missed. As mentioned before, close the lights and lay flat and listen to this. GREAT

My absolute favourites off the CD:
Great Ocean Road, Red is a slow colour, The big sleep, Marooned and Locked away

My advice is to go get If_Then_Else first, it offers a bigger variety. If u have it and u liked songs like Amity, Saturnine, and Analog Park.. Get this CD, it offers much much more..

5 out of 5 stars Good for music fans.......2001-10-01

Anyone who loves classical music and jazz, will truly love this album. Marsalis is wonderful in his numbers, and Sarah Chang is beyond outstanding!! She plays Paganini like she really means it.

Placido Domingo is very good in his numbers. He sings with great might. But if you want more magic, get the videotape. You will see the whole effect, which is better then hearing it.

A must for a music fan. Enjoy!!

Ghoultown couldn't put out a bad album if you held a 6 shooter to their collective temple. These guys consistently put out hard core gothabilly that could make you shiver in your velvet, here, gothy kids! I personally took a chance and bought the Album That Started It All, and this one is a gem!

1 out of 5 stars Worst CD Ever.......2006-01-16

A local band that is just terrible. Needless to say it is bad. Some bands can at least crank one good song out but this is a prime example of music that is just plain wrong. Rent if you can but do not under any circumstances buy.

This album sucked. I hated it. What a rip off of 2 dollars. It makes me want to stab myself with a fork so I dont have to listen to it anymore. What a piece of crap. Avoid these 70s glam loser wannabees at all costs. I know you people feel all bad-ass saying you don't listen to popular music, but come on, this is too much. And as a note to the reviewer before me, it does not take too much to beat motley crue, even at their best.

5 out of 5 stars !!! SO SICK OF YOU MAINSTREAM ARTISTS !!!.......2005-05-05

BEING FROM CANADA, IVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING ROBIN BLACK AND HIS FORMER BAND THE BALLROOM ZOMBIES ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, ONE TIME ROBIN ACTUALLY LET ME ON STAGE TO VIDEOTAPE THE WHOLE CONCERT! THIS CD ROCKS HARD, BUT ITS REALLY ONLY A TASTE OF A LIVE SHOW. MOST OF ROBIN BLACKS APPEAL IS THE LIVE SHOW, AND BELIEVE ME, THIS GUY HAS MORE STAGE PRESENCE THAN KISS AND MOTLEY CRUE AT THEIR BEST; ALL THE PYROS AND ATTITUDE, AND ADD A COUPLE DOZEN ROUND HOUSES, AND YOU'RE ALMOST THERE....

    5 out of 5 stars Awsome! A must have!.......2005-02-19

This CD is what started it all. And what a start it was. I luv it to peices, and so will you. I bet you that by the time you listen to it for the first time, you wont be able to stop yourself from playing it again and again. So i highly recommend you buy it! They rock!

5 out of 5 stars Oh My God!!.......2004-04-12

This was the truly best CD I bought in 2002, one of those rare CD's where EVERY song is that damn good!
REAL rock n roll is making a big come-back and this CD is part of it.
It's a true winner -get it!!!

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM RAWKS!!!!!!!.......2004-02-12

RBIRS are an amazing band, both live and recorded. They have an awesome heavy glam-rock sound with insane guitar and vocals that will thrill you in ways you never thought possible. Support Canadian rock and spread the word, 'cause these guys are going to be HUGE!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very fun stuff!.......2006-03-20

I have had this CD for a while now, having bought it from the band at Dragon*Con. I must say first off that the band sounds much better live than on the CD, as the production sounds a little muddy. All in all, though, this is a very enjoyable cd. The songs are catchy, and may stick in your head. The sound is deliberately Western (as you should have figured out by the title and cover art), and the band is from Texas. My friends call this a "Goth Cowboy Band" - and that is pretty much their look as well as sound. Misfits meet Johnny Cash here. Kitschy? Yes, but very, very fun. See them live if you can. Their other cd's are good too.

4 out of 5 stars the Misfits go western.......2004-01-28

I think the title says it all. Combine the Misfit's love of B movies and mix in the american western. While Ghoultown is every bit as alternative country as it is punk, I think it is a good combination. This isn't a CD you will listen to every day but it still finds it't way into my CD changer on a regular basis.

    5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2003-11-30

After reading the first review here, I felt like I should defend these guys. I personally thought the western theme was refreshing and well done. Sure it's got influence from old westerns, but this is not some kind of Tex Ritter or Gene Autry outfit. They play in the creepy stuff like ghosts and zombies to make it modern and interesting. The band overall are good musicians and the music is well delivered, even the vocals. It's probably not everyone's thing, but if you like a little Glenn Danzig along with your Johnny Cash, Ghoultown is it!

1 out of 5 stars not worth my dime.......2003-11-04

I bought this on a whim. bad move. it's definitly unique, but annoying. it's a western, and i mean the whole album. they sound like an old western movie, and his voice is nothing to write home about, in fact i'm wasting my time with this. if your into goth rock and dark stuff, do NOT waste your time with this.
