Autechre's Sean Booth and Rob Brown are always going off about how influenced they are by hip-hop, but gosh, it's hard to hear it in their arid, jittery soundscapes. The German duo Funkstorung got tagged early on as Autechre wannabes, and on their latest album, Appetite for Disctruction, they make the hip-hop connection explicit, rubbing their jagged synthetic beats against some oddball MCs, brewing up a music that some wag has already dubbed "blip-hop." Highlights include "Sounds like a Breakrecord," in which Triple H drops some deadpan science while an anvil angs in the background, and "Think!," a collaboration with an MC named Greenwood in which the duo do to his rap what Timbaland does to rhythm racks: breaks it up, shakes it up, and creates an entirely new sense of flow. But these sorts of things are never new enough. Someone, somewhere, has already figured out how to dance to this. --Jeff Salamon --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars ausgezeichnet!.......2000-11-18

If this album is to be your first acquaintance with FUNKSTÖRUNG, so much the better. However, if you already have "Additional Productions", you may be disappointed--this will merely be more of the same. Still, the guys do good work, and I would rather have this CD in my collection than not.

3 out of 5 stars Very good, but..........2000-11-06

I bought this cd after reading a collection of rave reviews onit. There is certainly nothing wrong with this cd, but the Autechre ghost lingers strongly over these proceedings! While there are some fantastic sounds and beats on here, its really nothing that Autechre hasn't done in the past. However, as an electronic musician myself, i'd be flattered if someone said my music was even in the same league with Autechre! So, if you're looking for some very good IDM music, and you have all the Autechre stuff, then by all means, pick this up!!

5 out of 5 stars Paraphrasing Guns 'n' Roses, uh?.......2000-10-20

Funkstörung supported Einstürzende Neubaten during their last tour. This alone should induce you to buy the record at once but given that you haven't probably heard of EN, I'll try to convince you in a different way. Basically they blend disturbing sounds and breaks to create an electronic texture that sounds tuneful (It's as if you managed to create great music by banging a steel pipe against the wall...only that the sounds here are synth-generated). Some track have hip-hop-like rythms while others are less catchy and more experimental but both have something in common: they steadily rock!

5 out of 5 stars Timbaland for the 21st century.......2000-09-07

This is the music that will soundtrack the next century,Broken beats stutter away behind haunting melodies and cut up soundbites. Hip Hop has never sounded so modern, and probably never will. "..Distruction" sounds like it wasn't made by people at all, if computers could breakdance, they would to this. Futuristic, cold, robotic, yet strangely emotional. Music like this helps you dream. Glitch Hop indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Machine Music With A Soul.......2000-06-17

In my opinion, electronic music very often sounds too machine-like and too cold. In that sense, listening to electronic music is similar to listening to free jazz: You can do it if you're in sort of an intellectual mode but you wouldn't really play it to your girlfriend for breakfast on a sunny Sunday morning. A rather obvious thing would be to add human voices to electronic music. Mouse On Mars did this on their "Cache Coeur Naive" EP, borrowing Stereolab's voices. On this album, Funkstörung do it on some of their tracks, too. The result is not entirely convincing. I like the rapping, but the female singing is much worse than the standard Funkstörung set themselves by remixing Björk's "All Is Full Of Love". However, it would be somewhat unfair to judge this very nice album just by the vocals. I pretty much agree with the other reviewers who pointed out the similarities between this album and Autechre's work and who praised its qualities. It is a splendid piece of electronic music.
